Lionel Messi ‘will have to take pay cut’ if he agrees new Barcelona contract, says presidential candidate Freixa

LIONEL MESSI will need to take a pay cut if he extends his Barcelona contract, according to a presidential candidate.
The club captain, 33, came close to leaving in the summer after falling out with the board.

He performed a dramatic U-turn to honour his contract, which has one year left to run at the Nou Camp.
But Toni Freixa warned Messi must slash his wages if he is going to pen a new deal and stay beyond the summer.
He told El Curubito: “With Leo we will speak calmly, face to face with Barcelona’s best interests at heart.
“To him, as to all the players who have to renew or sign, we will make an offer that, of course, will not be feasible to match the terms that he has had until now.

“It’s evident, and the members cannot be deceived, that the proposal that will be presented to him will not be the same as the one he has had until now, because income has fallen significantly and it will be necessary to find another formula.”
Barcelona have been hit hard by coronavirus and need to cut the wage bill by around £171million to help balance the books – while player sales are likely.
Stars already accepted a wage decrease, said to be as much as 70 per cent, in the spring amid the onset of the pandemic.
Gerard Pique, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Clement Lenglet and Frenkie de Jong all signed new deals on reduced wages last month.

And Freixa recognised Messi’s mammoth £500,000-a-week basic wages – pocketing him £26m a year before all his sponsorship deals and bonuses – are unsustainable going forwards.
Messi was heavily linked with Manchester City and a reunion with Pep Guardiola.
Paris Saint-Germain may also make a swoop, with the six-time Ballon d’Or able to enter pre-contract negotiations in January.
But for Freixa and the other presidential candidates hoping to replace Josep Maria Bartomeu, among the top priorities is getting Messi to stay at Barcelona.
He added: “You don’t have to conquer Messi or convince him with other things.
“You have to look him in the eye and talk with him to know what each party wants, what he wants and what Barcelona want.
“We think Messi still has a lot of football left to play.”

Luis Suarez ready to try and sway Lionel Messi to join him at Atletico Madrid in sensational transfer from Barcelona

LUIS SUAREZ is open to trying to persuade best pal Lionel Messi to sensationally quit Barcelona and join him at Atletico Madrid.
The Uruguayan former Liverpool striker was frozen out at Barca and ended up joining LaLiga rivals Atletico in the summer.

Argentine superstar Messi is set to quit the Nou Camp when his contract ends in May – but Manchester City remain favourites to sign the 33-year-old six-time Ballon d’Or winner.
Suarez’ transfer, including an on-off switch to Juventus which ended in up with the Serie A giants pulling the plug, infuriated Messi, who has built up a long-standing friendship with his fellow South American.
The pair clicked soon after Suarez, 33, joined Barca from the Reds in 2014.
Suarez has suggested he might try and convince Messi to join his fellow Argentine Diego Simeone in the Spanish capital – although he admits he does not know where the little maestro will be playing his football next term.

In an interview with Madrid newspaper AS, Suarez said: “I’ll always say it, Leo is mature enough to make the decisions he has to make.
“I will never ask him anything, on the contrary, I will always defend that where he is happy, he is happy, that he make the decision he makes.
“If at some point the possibility comes up, then let him know, obviously I’m going to speak wonders of the club.

“But later, when it comes to raising something, I think it is he who has to decide and where he is happy will be the best.

“He is 33 years old and knows how to deal with every situation. I see him with the same enthusiasm that I saw him before.
“Enjoying and not lowering your arms, which is important. Because, although sometimes the ball does not want to enter, it keeps trying. That says a lot about him.”
Suarez and Messi have been close friends for six years.
Even their partners are close and the two families have been known to holiday together.
But one stumbling block could be Atletico’s inability to put together a mega-money financial package to convince Messi – with City ready to pay millions to reunited the Argentine with his old Barca boss Pep Guardiola.

Eden Hazard’s Real Madrid nightmare continues as he tests positive for coronavirus and will miss game against England

EDEN HAZARD has suffered another setback after testing positive for coronavirus.
The former Chelsea star is set to miss Belgium’s Nations League game against England on November 15.

He is also going to have to sit out of Belgium’s game against Switzerland on Wednesday.
Real Madrid confirmed in a statement that Hazard and team-mate Casemiro have contracted the virus.
The news comes just six days after Real Madrid star Eder Militao returned a positive test.
A statement from the Spanish side read: “Real Madrid C. F. would like to inform that our players Casemiro and Eden Hazard have tested positive in the COVID-19 tests carried out yesterday, Friday morning.

“All the other players and the technical staff from the first team, as well as all the employees of the club who work directly with them, tested negative in that same test.
“The club would like to confirm once again that everyone, with the exception of Casemiro and Hazard, tested negative in the antigen tests carried out that same morning.”
Hazard and Casemiro, along with Militao, will be unavailable for Sunday’s game against Valencia.
The positive test is the latest in a long list of setbacks for former Chelsea star Hazard.

He has struggled to live up to expectations since his switch to the Bernabeu for £130million in 2019.
Hazard infuriated Madrid bosses by turning up to pre-season overweight in September.
And he has missed a whopping 35 games through injury since his move to Spain.
The 29-year-old went 392 days without even scoring a goal for Zinedine Zidane’s side.
But he ended his goal drought in October during the 4-1 win over Huesca.
Hazard raised further concerns as he limped off the pitch on Tuesday against Inter Milan.
However, he was back training on Wednesday after it was confirmed that he had sustained no significant damage.

Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman defends Lionel Messi after video of star walking back vs Dynamo Kiev goes viral

RONALD KOEMAN has insisted he is “not interested” in complaints over Lionel Messi walking back to defend against Dynamo Kyiv.
Barcelona were leading the Ukrainians 2-1 when the Argentine was spotted taking his defensive duties far-from seriously in injury time on Wednesday night.

Many fans were not happy with Messi not chasing the player back

Fans picked up on Messi walking back as an opposition player ran past him and into the Blaugrana’s half.
But Koeman insisted he is happy with the attitude and application of his star striker.
The Barcelona boss told reporters: “I see [Messi] well, strong. And he always enjoys this sport. He is a winner, and he shows it.
“Like anyone else, he has more complicated moments and the ball won’t go in. It seems that, to this day, he is a very involved player.

“You can get an image of a player when he walks. I haven’t seen it and I’m not interested.
“My thoughts on his attitude are very good. I don’t agree with the idea of creating controversy.
“If with a 2-1 lead and in the 93rd minute you get an image of him walking – you cannot be more attentive to the images than to the work.
“I don’t agree with doing harm.”

The narrow win over Dynamo maintained Barcelona’s 100 per cent start in the Champions League group stage.
However, the Catalans are enduring their worst start to a LaLiga campaign in 18 years, ahead of Saturday’s clash with Real Betis.
Messi notched a penalty in midweek but has not scored in the league since September – and was booked for kicking the ball at the referee in the recent draw with Alaves.

Real Madrid plan for new wave of Galacticos with stunning triple transfer for Mbappe, Haaland and Camavinga

REAL MADRID are reportedly planning a stunning triple swoop to bring in Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and Eduardo Camavinga.
Los Blancos have cash to spend next year having failed to sign anyone this summer due to the coronavirus crisis, while their key targets were not available.

This is how Real Madrid could start if they sign all their key targets

According to AS, Zinedine Zidane’s side are in pole position to land Borussia Dortmund striker Haaland when he decides to leave the German club.
Manchester United have also been linked with a move to sign the Norway international, but it is believed Real are at the front of the queue.
The Spanish news outlet also claims that Paris Saint Germain forward Kylian Mbappe is being chased by Zizou.
Meanwhile Rennes starlet Camavinga remains a priority for Real as they look to replace the ageing Luka Modric.

SunSport reported in September how the trio were being eyed up by Real as they plan for a new wave of Galacticos.
Should Real manage to sign the exciting youngsters, they would most certainly boast one of the most lethal sides in Europe.
Thibaut Courtois would retain his place between the sticks, while Dani Carvajal would start at right-back with Ferland Mendy to edge out Marcelo at left-back.
The centre-back pairing would likely be Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane with the two having formed a formidable partnership.

Brazilian defensive midfielder Casemiro would likely sit in front of the back four, with Toni Kroos and Camavinga playing slightly ahead.
To accommodate Eden Hazard featuring on the left wing, Mbappe may be shunted out on the right wing, despite it not being his natural position.
Despite Karim Benzema impressing of late for Real, he could find himself on the bench in favour of Haaland.
A wealth of attacking talent would also be on the bench, as Zidane would not only be able to rely on Benzema, but also Vinicius Junior, Isco and potentially Gareth Bale.

Dani Alves reveals he wanted Barcelona return but club ‘didn’t have the balls to admit they were wrong with me’

DANI ALVES revealed he wanted to return to Barcelona but the club ‘didn’t have the balls to admit they were wrong with me’.
Brazilian Alves, 37, starred 391 times for the Catalan giants from 2008 to 2016, winning 23 trophies, including six LaLiga crowns and three Champions League titles.

After establishing himself as the world’s prominent right-back he was surprisingly allowed to leave on a free and joined Juventus on a two-year deal in 2016.
But he left Turin by mutual consent after winning a domestic double in his only season and signed for French giants Paris Saint-Germain in 2017.
But Sao Paolo star Alves revealed he fancied a return to Spain after leaving Serie A – but the club’s failure to recognise they treated him poorly prevented him rejoining the Blaugrana.
He told RAC 1: “I offered myself to Barca to come back. I went to Juve to prove I was still at a good level.

“I wanted to return to Barca and they needed me, but they didn’t have the balls to admit that they were wrong with me.
“If they had treated me as I thought I deserved, today I would still continue playing for Barca. I love this club.”
Alves added another six trophies to his collection in two years in the French capital with PSG.
Before returning to play in his homeland with Sao Paolo in 2019.

The veteran full-back is still captain of the Brazilian side and has amassed 118 caps since his 2003 debut.
He is the latest star to slam the Barcelona hierarchy after skipper Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar all ripped into the Catalan chiefs.
Controversial president Josep Maria Bartomeu quit last month ahead of a vote of no confidence and Alves believes it’s time for a rebuilding project at the cash-strapped giants.
He added: “The style of Barca is changing. The club has lost its identity a bit and now has to go through a tough process to recover it.
“I think that Barca only wants to be a commercial and business club…buy and sell players. When you do that, you lose your identity. I think that is the problem for Barcelona.”

Man Utd ‘set to return for Ousmane Dembele with January transfer bid as Barcelona look to offload winger’

MANCHESTER UNITED are looking to return in January with a bid to sign Ousmane Dembele from Barcelona, reports suggest.
United failed with every attempt to bring a winger to the club in the summer window, including their doomed saga with Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho.

They instead signed striker Edison Cavani on a free, but Old Trafford boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is still keen to enhance his attacking options.
According to Mundo Deportivo, United will look to sign 23-year-old Dembele in the winter sales.
But they are said to be looking for a six-month loan with no option to buy.
That proved to be a stumbling block last time around as Barca instead wanted to sell the Frenchman permanently.

The Spanish giants – now managed by Ronald Koeman – missed out on signing Lyon’s Memphis Depay as a result of not selling enough stars.
Dembele, who has attracted attention from Liverpool before, remained in LaLiga and has featured seven times, starting three games this season.
The £124million signing has just two years left on his contract, with his transfer value decreasing after every window.

But with United appearing unwilling to commit to anything other than a temporary loan deal, they could fail in a pursuit for Dembele.
Solskjaer is under increasing pressure at Old Trafford, after they slumped to consecutive defeats, first to Arsenal in the league and then at Istanbul Basaksehir.
The club are already reported to have approached former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino as a possible replacement – although SunSport understands no contact has yet been made.
They travel to fourth placed Everton this weekend placed 15th in the table.

Barcelona to sell five players in January including Man Utd transfer target Ousmane Dembele to raise cash

CASH-STRAPPED Barcelona will reportedly flog five stars in January, including Manchester United target Ousmane Dembele, to raise funds.
Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo reports the club will try and offload Dembele, Martin Braithwaite, Carles Alena, Junior Firpo and Samuel Umtiti.

Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo splashed on Barcelona’s transfer plans

The club need to offload players surplus to requirements to allow boss Ronald Koeman to reinvest in the squad.
Former Holland boss Koeman, 57, is lining up moves for ex-United flop Memphis Depay and Manchester City ace Eric Garcia.
But club chiefs have made it clear they need to balance the books first after reporting losses of £88million.
Barca are desperately trying to slash their whopping £355m annual wage bill as crisis talks with players continue.

Dembele attracted attention from the Red Devils as an alternative to Jadon Sancho but reportedly snubbed a move to Old Trafford on deadline day in favour of Juventus but that move also failed to materialise.
The French ace arrived at the Nou Camp from Borussia Dortmund for £124m in 2017 but has failed to live up to his hefty price tag and the club will reportedly seek to recoup £45m in January.
But Mundo Deportivo reports United would prefer a loan move with an option to buy rather than an obligation as the club looks to fix their dismal start to the season.
The report states Barca’s other option for quick cash is to sell Dembele’s compatriot Umtiti.

The centre-back has previously been linked with both United and Arsenal and his torrid run of injuries plus Barca’s Covid crisis has convinced them to put the 26-year-old up for sale.
He is yet to feature at all this season and his injury could make it hard to secure a deal.
Umtiti previously revealed he held talks with Lyon in the summer but a deal could not be brokered as he revealed he wished to stay in Catalonia.
The desire for Koeman to be reunited with old international player Depay is likely to spell the end for Danish forward Braithwaite, 29, who has failed to convince the new boss of his worth.
Barca are also willing to listen to offers for midfielder Alena, 22, but are not interested in a loan deal.
Versatile Junior Firpo, 24, is also up for grabs after slipping down the impact sub pecking order.
