Lionel Messi ‘more concerned with family than football’ reveals Luis Suarez amid Barcelona contract saga

LIONEL MESSI is more focused on his family than his football, pal Luis Suarez has explained.
Barcelona’s tough start to the season improved with a brace from the Argentine in last weekend’s win over Real Betis.

The striker’s future at the club remains in huge doubt following his transfer saga over the summer, with the threat of a legal battle keeping him in Catalonia.
Having left for Atletico Madrid, Suarez believes Messi is not worried by his situation at Barcelona as the pair prefer to discuss family life.
The 33-year-old told Marca: “We speak a lot but honestly when we speak it’s about our lives.
“We’ve both had children’s birthdays recently, we talk about life, the virus and everything else but very little about football.

“We’re more concerned with how our families are than what happens in football.”
Messi’s and Suarez’s families are well acquainted and often join the former strike partners on holiday or out for dinner.

A six-year spell in the same team saw the pair become great friends although they will face off in a crunch LaLiga clash later this month.
Saturday’s showdown in Madrid will give Suarez the chance to get one over his former employers.

Barcelona told the Uruguayan he had no future at the Camp Nou before a drawn-out move to Atleti was finally given the green light.
He continued: “I was sad and hurt by the way I left, which I have already said.
“I feel proud. When I wasn’t wanted, I found somewhere I was. I’ve found happiness and I’m enjoying this period.”
Barcelona sit eighth going into the clash and, at times, have found goals hard to come by in LaLiga.

Alaves held Ronald Koeman’s side to a draw last month in a four-game winless run that included defeats to Real Madrid and Getafe.
Former Italy striker Antonio Cassano recently joined the calls criticising the club for selling Suarez.
He told an Instagram Live video: “For me it was crazy to let him leave Barcelona.
“He scored 350 goals in six years, I don’t know why they kicked him out. And now they have to play [Antoine] Griezmann at centre-forward!”

Ex-Liverpool and Barcelona star Javier Mascherano retires aged 36 after glittering career due to ‘personal feelings’

FORMER Liverpool and Barcelona star Javier Mascherano has announced his retirement from football after a glittering 17-year career.
The 36-year-old dad-of-three revealed his decision on Sunday after his current side, top-flight Argentinian team Estudiantes de la Plata, continued their poor start to the season.

Mascherano, nicknamed Jefecito or ‘Little Boss’ in his homeland, left boyhood club River Plate for Brazilian side Corinthians in 2005.
A spell with West Ham in 2006 introduced the anchor man to European football although his switch became embroiled in the Hammers’ third-party ownership saga that cost the club a £5.5million fine.
He moved to Liverpool in early 2007 and went on to make 139 appearances and become a star of the side under Rafa Benitez, before signing for Barcelona three seasons later.
At the Camp Nou, Mascherano quickly settled to become an integral part of Pep Guardiola’s imperious side.

A debut season LaLiga and Champions League double was followed by four more league crowns, five Copas del Rey and another European triumph over an eight-year stay.
In total, he won 19 titles with Barcelona with his international silverware limited to two Olympic gold medals after final defeats in a World Cup and four Copa America campaigns.
His 147 appearances for Argentina makes him the country’s most-capped player ahead of Javier Zanetti.
In 2018, he bid a tearful farewell to Spain and signed for Hebei China Fortune, leaving after 18 months for Estudiantes in his home country.

Mascherano appeared to be building up towards a big announcement by posting a throwback picture from the 2006 World Cup in Argentina last Friday.
It showed him laughing and joking when he still had hair at a dinner table with the likes of Juan Roman Riquelme and Pablo Aimar.
But it was not until after Sunday’s loss against Argentinos Juniors that he confirmed his surprise decision to hang up his boots at a press conference with his team manager Leandro Desabato.
Denying it was linked to Estudiantes’ poor performances of late, he said: “It’s got nothing to do with the club or the results.
    “It’s personal feelings.
“I’d like to thank Estudiantes for enabling me to return to Argentinian football.

“I’m thankful to Desabato and all my teammates for having put up with me during this time.”
The official Champions League Twitter account paid their tribute, in a post that read: “Two-time winner and former Barcelona star Javier Mascherano has retired from football. Thanks for the memories.”
Former Argentina teammate Ezequiel Lavezzi, a close friend, said: “Having been able to share the professionalism with which you always approached this sport, makes you be sorely missed without any shadow of a doubt Javier.
“Congratulations on such a great career my friend. I love you.”

Barcelona ‘will have to pay Lionel Messi £30m loyalty bonus’ even if he leaves on free transfer

BARCELONA will have to pay Lionel Messi a £30million loyalty bonus at the end of the season even if he leaves, reports say.
The Argentine legend’s contract expires in the summer, meaning he can walk away from the club for nothing.

And he could do so £30m richer as part of the deal he signed in 2017, according to ESPN.
The contract he penned three years ago is said to have included a £60m loyalty bonus.
And Messi was already paid half of that back in February, with the rest due when his contract expires in June.
It means he will receive the money regardless of where he is playing his football next season.

Messi tried to force his way out of the Nou Camp this summer after handing in a transfer request.
He believed his contract allowed him to leave for free at the end of each season.
But the Spanish giants argued that the stipulation expired in the summer, even though the season was extended amid the coronavirus pandemic.
As Messi did not want to take his boyhood club to court, he decided to commit his future to Barca.

Manchester City are among those linked with the forward, who ex-Barca midfielder Luis Figo feels has already made up his mind about his future.
Figo said: “I watched the thing with Messi and his attempt to leave Barcelona this summer like all football fans: expectantly and surprised.
“He’ll have his motives and reasons for making that decision. I don’t know what happened beforehand.
“Every club wants to have a player like Messi, but then it depends on factors like the current financial situation at the club, the money he’ll cost the club in wages, the will of the player…
“But generally, in life, if you don’t want to be somewhere, in the end there’s nothing that can change your mind.”

Former Barcelona director claims club rejected chance to sign Erling Haaland because he ‘wasn’t a Barca player’

FORMER BARCELONA director Javier Bordas has claimed the club rejected the chance to sign Erling Haaland.
The Catalans had considered the Norwegian striker as one of their options to provide back-up to Luis Suarez back in 2019.

Barcelona once passed up the opportunity to sign Erling HaalandCredit: AFP

Having just completed an impressive stint in Molde, the youngster was heading to RB Salzburg where he later earned an £18million move to Borussia Dortmund.
Yet SunSport previously revealed that Barca opted against beating the Germans to Haaland in favour of landing Kevin-Prince Boateng on loan.
The club’s former director Bordas has now shed some light on why the LaLiga giants avoided making a move for the now-Dortmund star.
When asked why Barcelona didn’t go for Haaland, he told Mundo Deportivo: “Because they told me that (he) was not a Barca player.

“I understand that Bartomeu ignores the technical secretary, but the truth is that these players could have come, and then you don’t know what performance they are going to give.”
Bordas later revealed that Barcelona also chose to sign Ousmane Dembele over Kylian Mbappe.
He said: “Yes, when we were ready to sign Dembele, [Josep Maria] Minguella called me to tell us that Mbapppe was within reach.

They told me that (he) was not a Barca player.

“I spoke with [Josep Maria] Bartomeu and he told me to look at him.

“I called his father and he told me that he was not going to go to Madrid because Cristiano, Benzema and Bale were there and instead he could go to Barca because Neymar was not there.
“The president of Monaco preferred for him to go to Barca so as not to strengthen PSG, a direct rival.
“And for 100 million euros it could have been done.

“But Robert preferred Dembele and Pep Segura supported him.
“The explanation was that Mbappe plays for himself and Dembele plays for the team.
“And since a winger like Ney[mar] left, Robert preferred a winger more than a finisher.”

Barcelona ‘chose to sign Ousmane Dembele over Kylian Mbappe’ reveals former director in transfer shocker

BARCELONA chose to sign Ousmane Dembele over Kylian Mbappe, the club’s former director Javier Bordas revealed.
The Catalan giants splashed £124million on signing French forward Dembele, 23, from Borussia Dortmund in 2017.

But Bordas has now claimed they could have signed Dembele’s compatriot and Paris Saint-Germain star Mbappe, 21, instead.
Mbappe was still with Monaco at the time and Barca’s former exec suggested he could have been lured to the Nou Camp for around £90m.
As it turned out Mbappe left for Ligue 1 rivals PSG instead, first on loan in 2017 before making the move permanent for £108m the following year.
In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, Bordas said: “Yes, when we were ready to sign Dembele, [Josep Maria] Minguella called me to tell us that Mbappe was within reach.

“And for €100m it could have been done.

“But Robert preferred Dembele and Pep Segura supported him.
“The explanation was that Mbappe plays for himself and Dembele plays for the team.
“And since a winger like Ney[mar] left, Robert preferred a winger more than a finisher.”
But if they could do things over, Barcelona are sure to have changed their mind after Dembele’s torrid run with injuries and Mbappe’s sensational goalscoring.
Since moving to the French capital, Mbappe has scored 97 goals in 132 games in all competitions.
While Dembele has mustered just 22 goals in only 82 games and is reportedly up for sale in January as cash-strapped Barca look to recoup some of his handsome transfer fee.
Manchester United are said to be interested in landing the forward – who turned down a move to Old Trafford on deadline day – for a cut-price £45m.

Lionel Messi ‘has already made his mind up’ about future says Barcelona legend Luis Figo as Manchester City eye transfer

BARCELONA legend Luis Figo reckons Lionel Messi has already made up his mind about his future.
The Catalan club hero thinks there’s no changing Messi’s mind after he tried to force a move away in the summer.

Manchester City were ready to bring the Argentine magician to the Premier League but he eventually stayed in Spain.
The 33-year-old performed a dramatic U-turn after a potentially bitter legal battle scuppered his move.
Messi suggested he was forced to stay at Barcelona against his wishes after saying he has no choice but to see out the last year of his contract with the club.
And Figo, who spent five years at Barcelona, thinks Messi is unlikely to sign a new deal to stay put.

Messi, 33, handed in his transfer request to Barca in the summer leaving his family devastated.
The Argentine legend has three sons with wife Antonela Roccuzzo, Ciro, two, Mateo, aged four, and Thiago, aged seven.
Speaking to Goal, he said: “When I communicated my wish to leave to my wife and children, it was a brutal drama.
“The whole family began crying, my children did not want to leave Barcelona, nor did they want to change schools.
“But I looked further afield and I want to compete at the highest level, win titles, compete in the Champions League. You can win or lose in it, because it is very difficult, but you have to compete.
“Mateo is still little and he doesn’t realise what it means to go somewhere else and make your life a few years elsewhere.
“Thiago, he is older. He heard something on TV and found out something and asked.

“I didn’t want him to know anything about being forced to leave, to have to live in a new school, or make new friends.
“He cried to me and said ‘let’s not go’. I repeat that it was hard, really.
“It was understandable. It happened to me. It is very difficult to make a decision.
“I love Barcelona and I’m not going to find a better place than here anywhere.

“Still, I have the right to decide. I was going to look for new goals and new challenges. And tomorrow I could go back, because here in Barcelona I have everything.
“My son, my family, they grew up here and are from here. There was nothing wrong with wanting to leave.
“I needed it, the club needed it and it was good for everyone.”

Real Madrid to ‘ask squad including Sergio Ramos and Karim Benzema to take ANOTHER pay cut due to coronavirus pandemic’

REAL MADRID stars are reportedly being asked to take a second pay cut amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Football’s finances have taken a major hit in the crisis with ticket and merchandise income slashed.

Karim Benzema and Sergio Ramos are set to take part in talks over a second Real Madrid pay cutCredit: Getty Images – Getty

Los Blancos had already agreed a pay cut, ranging between 10 and 20 per cent of their annual wage, in the spring.
That allowed the LaLiga giants to avoid job losses and the club saw out a quiet summer transfer window.
According to ESPN, Madrid fear more pay cuts are necessary to avoid substantial losses in the new season.
Spain has suffered a second wave of the pandemic and there is no sign of fans returning to grounds en masse anytime soon.

Talks with captains Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Karim Benzema and Raphael Varane are described as ongoing.
Furthermore, the exact figure to be cut is not yet decided while Real bosses set a budget for the year.
Reigning champions Madrid sit fourth in the table in a mad start to the season, which sees Real Sociedad claim top spot and Barcelona back in eighth.
Gareth Bale was allegedly the only player to refuse the voluntary pay cut in April, which also saw Real stars forego their bonus for winning LaLiga.

Fellow Spanish sides Barcelona and Atletico Madrid were forced to enact drastic pay reductions, worth up to 70 per cent, earlier in the year.
Having announced losses of £88m in October, the Catalans are once again said to be negotiating a round of cuts.

Gerard Pique, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Frenkie de Jong and Clement Lenglet recently signed new contracts that included a reduced salary.
The threat of bankruptcy is reportedly looming over the Camp Nou if further cuts cannot be agreed.
And it has even been claimed that Barcelona lost £23m-a-year in their new deal with shirt sponsor Rakuten due to the uncertainty over Lionel Messi’s future.

Where are Lionel Messi’s Barcelona team-mates from 2003 debut? From Xavi to Liverpool icon and little known stars

LIONEL MESSI, now bearded and always seen with a captain’s armband strapped around his bicep, is possibly the most familiar sight in football.
But if we cast our minds all the way back to November 2003, that was far from being the case.

Fresh-faced Messi was just 16 when he was first given an opportunity to shine at Barcelona

A fresh-faced 16-year-old, Messi was playing for Barca’s C team and a lifetime away from the enormous transfer saga which has erupted this summer.
But when the Spanish giants sent a squad to Portugal to face Porto in a mid-season friendly to open the brand new Estadio Dragao – built for Euro 2004 – Messi was handed a fleeting opportunity to shine.
Frank Rijkaard’s line-up, as remembered by Planet Football, was experimental to say the least, and ended up falling 2-0 to Jose Mourinho’s team – who went on to win the Champions League that season.
Messi was given 15 minutes at the end, and the diminutive 5ft 7in attacker managed to create two chances.

He went on to break into the Barcelona B side that season, before making nine first-team appearances the following year.
His prominence grew and he transformed into the six-time Ballon d’Or winning superstar we know today.
But what happened to the other players that were thrown together to play for Barca in that fairly innocuous friendly?
    Here SunSport akes a look.

    Albert Jorquera
Perennial understudy to Victor Valdes, Jorguera made 24 appearances across over a decade at the Nou Camp.
He left in 2009 after being further marginalised by the 2008 arrival of Jose Pinto – enjoying a year in the second tier with nearby Girona before hanging up his boots aged just 31 in 2010.
Jorquera went on to work in his family’s jewellery business – having studied for a gemology degree while playing understudy to Valdes.
    Oscar Lopez
Another academy graduate, the right-back had made two appearances at the back end of the previous campaign.
More first-team matches were hard to come by, however, and he finished his Barcelona career having featured only 13 times.
Injury-hit spells at Lazio, Real Betis, Numancia and Gimnastic failed to ignite things – and he ended up finishing his career in Holland with Go Ahead Eagles in 2012 at just 32.

    Oleguer
Oleguer is another La Masia graduate that retired in his early thirties – but he made far more of an impact on and off the pitch.
Making 175 appearances for Barca’s first-team between 2002 and 2008 – he even started the 2006 Champions League final against Arsenal.
More politically engaged than the average footballer, he has become known for his pro-independence Catalonian beliefs – and has written a number of articles to that end.

    Rafael Marquez
Mexican Rafa Marquez must have felt out of place in this XI as he was actually a first-team regular that season.
The commanding defender made 242 appearances for Barcelona as well as earning 147 caps for his country across a long, distinguished career in football.
He left Barca in 2010 but that didn’t mean that his time in the spotlight was over.
Marquez appeared in the music video for former team-mate Gerard Pique’s future wife Shakira’s hit song Waka Waka that summer ahead of the World Cup in South Africa.
But that wasn’t to be his last World Cup, as he was still playing for Mexico at the 2018 edition in Russia aged 39 despite having been blacklisted by the US for allegedly providing a front for a drugs cartel.

Rafa Marquez was a regular in the Barca backlineCredit: Times Newspapers Ltd
    Fernando Navarro
Left-back Navarro was a regular for Barcelona’s B squad at this point – but he managed to carve out a very respectable career for himself.
He went on to manage 35 appearances for the first-team while competing with the likes of Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Sylvinho.
Navarro eventually left Barca for Mallorca, before becoming a regular at Sevilla in a seven-year spell.
His form even earned him a place in Spain’s victorious Euro 2008 squad – appearing in their group stage triumph over Greece.
He retired in 2018 after an unsuccessful stint at Deportivo La Coruna.

    Ramon Ros
Possibly the most obscure name on this retro teamsheet, Ramon Ros, like Messi, was a regular in Barca’s C team that season.
The defensive midfielder did manage to break through two years later, making a cameo appearance against Sevilla in which he replaced Oscar Lopez.
But that was to be his only Barcelona appearance and after a loan spell at Numancia – he moved down a division to Lleida in the second tier.
Sadly he had to retire aged just 26 two years later after succumbing to a number of injuries.

    Xavi
Now it’s fair to say that this guy was quite successful, too.
The midfield metronome won 32 trophies for club and country throughout a distinguished career in which he became widely heralded as one of the greatest players of all time.
He left Barca in 2015 to play for Qatari side Al-Sadd, who he now manages.

    Sergio Santamaria
Now this list comes crashing back down to Earth with the entry of attacking midfielder, Sergio Santamaria.
While the Malaga native did at least get to enjoy the privilege of fleeting appearances in Barcelona’s first-team – he failed to live up to the promise that saw him scoop the prestigious Golden Ball award at the 1997 Under-17 World Cup.
He went on to play for Albacete, Saint Andreu and Logrones, among others, and retired aged just 31 after seeing injuries blight his senior career.
    Gabri
A Catalan born and bred, Gabri was a useful figure at Barcelona in the early 2000s, acting as a handy utility man between 1999 and 2006.
Predominantly a midfielder, he also did a job on the flanks on numerous occasions – as well as filling in at full-back.
His efforts earned him three Spain caps and a place in their Euro 2004 squad.
Since retiring in 2014, Gabri has become a coach, working at La Masia with the Barcelona academy for three years.
He has since become a manager in his own right, leading Swiss side Sion – and most recently FC Andorra.

    Luis Enrique
Enrique must have felt like a man among boys in this side. At 33 he was in the final year of his celebrated career when he took to the field in Oporto.
The 62-cap Spain international, who has since gone on to manage his country, played upfront, on the wings, in midfield and even once at centre-back against FC Puchov in the Uefa Cup that year.
Enrique waved goodbye to the Nou Camp at the end of that season after 301 appearances, but was to return a decade later to manage the club with distinction – winning the Champions League with a Messi-inspired team in 2015.
He is now manager of the Spanish national team once again.

    Luis Garcia
More well-known in England for his popular spell at Liverpool, Garcia actually struggled to make an impact while at boyhood club Barca.

Garcia had just returned to the Nou Camp a few months before this match having initially been sold to Atletico Madrid in 2002.
And while he managed seven goals and nine assists in his sole season in the Barca first-team – he could never achieve the popularity he was to gain at Anfield.
He joined Liverpool for £6million the following summer, becoming a hero in the Reds’ subsequent run to their fifth European Cup in his first season.
