Barcelona to be fined £2,700 for Lionel Messi’s touching shirt tribute to Diego Maradona after he was shown yellow card

BARCELONA are going to be fined £2,700 for Lionel Messi’s shirt tribute to Diego Maradona in Sunday’s 4-0 win against Osasuna.
The Catalan giants’ skipper started his career at Newell’s Old Boys and unveiled their shirt in tribute to Maradona – who also played there – after scoring at the weekend.

The goal had striking similarities to a goal scored by Maradona on his Newell’s debut 27 years ago.
He picked up the ball outside of the box, beat two defenders then fired a shot into the far corner of the net.
The celebration forced referee Mateu Lahoz to book Messi for removing his Barca shirt, in line with the Spanish FA’s rules.
As touching as the gesture was, in addition to the booking it also comes with a £2,700 fine.

The rule which imposes a fine for celebrations like Messi’s is not exclusive to the Spanish league, it is also applied by FIFA.
On FIFA’s official website, it states: “The IFAB, the body responsible for the Laws of the Game, decided to add a detail to Law 12 relating to ‘Fouls and Misconduct’, stating: “A player who removes his jersey after scoring a goal will be cautioned for unsporting behaviour.”
Newell’s president Eduardo Bermudez saw the tribute on Sunday and expressed the equal love the club has for both Messi and Maradona.
Bermudez insisted Messi is welcome back at the club, no matter how old.

After news broke of Maradona’s passing last Wednesday, Messi delivered a heartfelt message on Instagram: “This is a very sad day for all Argentines and for football.
“He has left us, but he hasn’t gone, because Diego is eternal.
“I remember all the nice moments we experienced together and I send my condolences to all his family and his friends. RIP.”

Martin Braithwaite among four Barcelona players fighting for futures and could be flogged in January transfer window

MARTIN BRAITHWAITE is among four Barcelona players fighting for their futures at the club, according to reports.
And they are all at risk of being flogged in January as the club look to make further cost-cutting measures.

According to Marca, Braithwaite, Junior Firpo, Carles Alena and Riqui Puig must all impress in the coming weeks with eight fixtures before the end of the year.
Or they will find themselves in the shop window when the market reopens on January 1.
Barcelona are in desperate need to slash costs amid spiralling debts as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
That saw the annual wage bill cut by 43 per cent to £343million for the 2020-21 season.

Lionel Messi, the rest of the players and manager Ronald Koeman did agree a pay cut last week.
Braithwaite, 29, arrived in an emergency £15m deal in February due to an injury crisis but is not seen as a long-term solution.
It took him 14 appearances for club and country to get his first goals of the season, scoring twice in the 4-0 win over Dynamo Kiev last week before hitting his first LaLiga strike of the campaign against Osasuna on Sunday.

Firpo, 24, was signed from Real Betis a year ago but has struggled to dislodge Jordi Alba in the side.

Big things are expected from La Masia graduates Alena, 22, and Puig, 21.
But they have struggled to get their chances this season with Barcelona enduring a poor start to life under Koeman.
That led to reports linking Puig – who has an £88m release clause – with a January switch to Leeds on loan.

Lionel Messi welcome back at Newell’s Old Boys at ANY age, claims club president after touching tribute to Maradona

NEWELL’S OLD BOYS president Eduardo Bermudez says Lionel Messi is welcome back at the club at any age.
His comments come after the Barcelona skipper – who started his boyhood career at the Argentine club – scored against Osasuna before unveiling Diego Maradona’s No10 on the back of a Newell’s shirt.

Speaking to the media on Sunday, Bermudez said: “I am very happy with Messi’s attitude , for us he is a maximum idol.
“He is an excellent person who loves Newell’s. Hopefully one day, no matter how old, when he decides, we can have him here. Here we love him the same as Maradona.
“It is a great emotion to be president of this club. Here we have adoration for Messi , I had no doubt that because of the love he has for Newell’s he would have a similar attitude although he did not expect this. It has been tremendous.
“It seems unwise to me to give an opinion when he is in another club. Come or not come, we love it.

“He is a very loved person throughout the city of Rosario. Hopefully that happens”
Messi, a boyhood Newell’s fan, started the early part of his youth career at the club in Rosario before getting picked up by the La Masia academy as a 14-year-old.
Between the age of 6-12 Messi scored 234 goals in 176 games for Newell’s, according to a former employee.
And on Maradona’s Newell’s debut, a six-year-old Messi was brought on to the pitch at half-time to do tricks for the crowd.

Newell’s would face stiff competition to secure a fairytale reunion, with Manchester City still keen on bringing Messi to the Premier League.
Pep Guardiola worked with Messi during his four-year stint as Barcelona manager between 2008-12.

Guardiola with Messi at his disposal was able to win three La Liga titles, two Champions Leagues, two Copa del Reys, two Super Cups and two FIFA World Cups.
Man City are believed to be looking to do a deal for Messi in January after the club’s failed attempts to lure him away in the summer.
According to ESPN, the long-term contract could see Messi stay in the Premier League for three years before moving to partner MLS club New York City FC.

Watch Messi and Maradona’s eerily similar goals for Barcelona and Newell’s Old Boys as Nou Camp star honours icon

LIONEL MESSI’S goal for Barcelona at the weekend that he dedicated to Diego Maradona was eerily similar to one scored by the late legend himself in 1993.
The 33-year-old paid tribute to the Argentine icon after he scored during the 4-0 win over Osasuna.

Lionel Messi scored Barcelona’s fourth goal of the game

Fans immediately compared Lionel Messi’s goal to one scored by Diego Maradona

Maradona tragically passed away last week after suffering a heart attack at his home, aged 60.
Messi was among the long list of stars to pay tribute to the former Barcelona forward.
When he returned to action on Sunday, Messi incredibly mimicked a goal scored by Maradona 27 years ago.
He picked up the ball outside of the box, beat two defenders then fired a shot into the far corner of the net.

It was freakishly similar to the strike by Maradona on his debut for Newell’s Old Boys in 1993.
And Messi was actually in the crowd for that match when he was just six years old.
During an interview with TyC Sports, the Barcelona star spoke of his memories of that day.
He said: “I don’t remember much, I was very young, but I saw Maradona on the pitch the day he made his debut against Emelec.”

After Messi’s goal on Sunday, he whipped off his shirt to reveal a Newell’s Old Boys jersey.
Despite the touching tribute, the six-time Ballon d’Or received a yellow card.
Two of Maradona’s former clubs, Newell’s Old Boys and Boca Juniors, also went head-to-head this weekend.
Both teams paid tribute to the 60-year-old – which left his distraught daughter in tears.

Pique reveals plot to ‘seduce’ Lionel Messi into staying at Barcelona with ace linked with Chelsea or Man City transfer

GERARD PIQUE has revealed Barcelona’s plot to ‘seduce’ Lionel Messi into staying at the Nou Camp.
Messi, 33, is out of contract in June and is free to discuss terms with other teams from January.

The Argentine and Barcelona all-time top scorer requested to leave the club after the demoralising 8-2 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich last season.
Premier League duo Manchester City and Chelsea were linked with moves for the attacker.
Messi would later decide to stay after it was made clear that he would not be allowed to leave the club for free.
Barcelona team-mate Pique, however, has urged Messi to stay at the Nou Camp and hopes the club can ‘seduce’ him to stay and see out the rest of his playing career.

Speaking at a question and answer session for the CRIS Cancer Foundation, Pique said: “We hope he stays. It’s a personal decision. We will see. But as long as he’s wearing the Barca shirt, there is always hope.
“We hope to seduce him to stay for many more years.”
Any discussions of a new deal will have to wait until January when a new president is elected, after Josep Maria Bartomeu resigned in October.
Victor Font and Joan Laporta are two of the favourites to succeed Bartomeu, but they’re faced with one of the toughest tasks from minute one of their presidency; convince Messi to stay.

The club has got off to a horrible start in the league, they sit eighth after nine games and nine points behind league leaders Real Sociedad.
And Messi was rested in the thumping 4-0 win away at Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League, with Ronald Koeman hoping he comes back fresh and ready to help Barca get their league campaign back on track.
Speaking on Saturday ahead of the weekend’s game, Koeman said: “Messi had a good break this week, as did Frenkie de Jong.
“Both had played nearly every minute for us this season, in addition to many games with their national teams.

“The can’t keep going and going and going. To avoid problems, we left them at home in midweek.
“But we will need them (against Osasuna).”
And Barca indeed needed them, and the rest clearly did Messi the world of good.
Barcelona smashed four past Osasuna with Messi getting on the scoresheet, and to celebrate Messi took off his shirt revealing a Newell’s Old Boys shirt in memory of the late, great Diego Maradona.

Lionel Messi pays tribute to Maradona but gets BOOKED for taking off Barcelona shirt to reveal Newell’s Old Boys jersey

LIONEL MESSI paid tribute to Diego Maradona by taking off his Barcelona shirt to reveal a Newell’s Old Boys jersey but was BOOKED for the geture.
The Catalan giants’ skipper bagged a stunning goal against Osasuna before unveiling Maradona’s old No10 strip from years gone by.

But despite the touching moment in honour of Messi’s late Argentine compatriot, the LaLiga ref still saw fit to brandish a yellow card.
Maradona died on Wednesday aged 60 after suffering a heart attack and the latest news suggests the house of his personal doctor was searched by cops amid reports his passing is being treated as manslaughter.
Messi began his career at Argentine side Newell’s before moving into Barca’s youth system in 2001, while former Napoli icon Maradona had a short stint at the club after arriving in 1993.
Fittingly Messi’s strike was a sublime solo effort reminiscent of Maradona’s footballing genius.

The two all-time greats have been compared thanks to their similar playing style, stature and innate ability.
Footage of them playing together for Argentina emerged in the wake of Maradona’s passing.
The pair teamed up on the same Argentine all-stars side in an exhibition match in 2005.
Maradona and Messi – two of the greatest footballers of all time – shone brightest on a night which also featured Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero, Maradona’s former son-in-law.

And that was despite neither of them being in their prime with Maradona already 45 and a fresh-faced Messi just 18.
They caused havoc for the opposition with highlights showing plenty of neat through balls and sumptuous flicks.
Messi’s goal was Barcelona’s last in their 4-0 rout of Osasuna at an empty Nou Camp amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Both sides observed a minute’s silence in honour of Maradona before kick-off.
Former Liverpool ace Philippe Coutinho, Antoine Griezmann and Martin Braithwaite were also on target for the Blaugrana.

Real Madrid 1 Alaves 2: Eden Hazard injured AGAIN as Thibaut Courtois howler makes it horror night for Zinedine Zidane

EDEN HAZARD went off injured as Real Madrid suffered a horror night against Alaves.
Things started badly for Zinedine Zidane’s side and only got worse in a 2-1 defeat on home soil – leaving them SIX points off the pace in LaLiga.

Former Arsenal striker Lucas Perez scored a penalty after just five minutes, before Hazard limped off in discomfort on 28 minutes.
Real thought they should have had a penalty in the incident.
It then got even worse early in the second half when Hazard’s former Chelsea team-mate Thibaut Courtois gifted Alaves a second goal.
The Belgian keeper passed straight to Joselu, who slotted into an empty net from 25 yards out.

Casemiro scored in the 86th minute to try and spark a comeback, but it was too little, too late for Real Madrid.
In only his fifth start of the season, the Belgian superstar injured himself when he was hacked down inside the box.
A penalty was not given for the tackle and to rub salt into Zinedine Zidane’s wound, Hazard had to be withdrawn straight away.
The Chelsea legend could be seen limping with a frustrated look on his face as he made his way to the bench.

It was not clear what Hazard has injured.
Hazard has had a miserable time since moving to the Spanish capital in a deal worth up to £150million in the summer of 2019.
He missed 24 matches last season as Zidane’s side won the Spanish title, but promised to come back this season and return to top form.
However, his bid to get back to his best – and get a consistent run of games – has been hampered by injury and illness.
He first suffered a thigh injury in pre-season training that forced him to miss the start of the season.

Hazard then tested positive for Covid-19 that kept him out for two weeks at the start of month.
Now Hazard suffered this latest setback, although the seriousness of the injury is still to be determined.
Early reports in Spain say Hazard had ‘discomfort’ in muscles in his right leg, with tests to follow in the coming days.
In fact, Hazard has already missed more than QUADRUPLE the amount of games (36) in just 17 months than he did (eight) in seven YEARS at Chelsea. More

Joleon Lescott ACCIDENTALLY comes out of retirement aged 38 to play for Spanish minnows Racing Murcia in bizarre mix-up

FORMER England international Joleon Lescott has ACCIDENTALLY come out of retirement to join a Spanish THIRD DIVISION club.
Ambitious Tercera Division outfit Racing Murcia announced the signing of the 38-year-old on Friday.

They confirmed Lescott will make his debut for them in their Copa del Rey clash with Primera Liga side Levante on December 16.
However, now a bizarre situation has unfolded as the two-time Premier League winner believed he was only agreeing to play in an exhibition match.
And he was as shocked as anyone when news of his signing broke earlier today.
Lescott, who looks after players loaned out by old club Manchester City, has not played competitively since lining-up for Sunderland in a 5-1 defeat to Chelsea three-and-a-half years ago.

It remains to be seen whether he makes himself available for Racing next month or if the Spanish minnows will have to make an embarrassing U-Turn.
Racing, whose Estadio de fútbol Municipal de Dolores de Pacheco ground holds 3,500 fans, are seventh in Group B of Group 13 on the fourth step of Spain’s football pyramid.
Lescott won two Premier League titles and both the League and FA Cup during his time at Manchester City after a £22m move from Everton in 2009.
He has also played for Wolves, Everton, West Brom, Aston Villa and Sunderland before retiring.

The best available free agents still on the market
Lescott has been working for City and as a TV pundit since leaving the Black Cats.
Murcia, backed by UAE and Mexican investors, failed in a bold bid to bring ex-Chelsea, Everton and Barcelona star Samuel Eto’o out of retirement last week.
But they were ecstatic at securing the services of the Birmingham-born veteran, who won 26 caps for the Three Lions.
A Murcia statement said: “Our president Morris Pagniello, and Racing Murcia, are delighted to announce the signing of the English star Joleon Lescott.
“He will play in our Copa del Rey game against UD Levante.”
Murcia signed Paul Pogba’s older brother, Guinea international Mathias, in August.
The defender, 30, previously played for Wrexham, Crewe, Crawley Town and Patrick Thistle.
