Barcelona star Lionel Messi building bar 100 yards down road from best pal Luis Suarez’s restaurant

LIONEL MESSI is following in the footsteps of best pal Luis Suarez – by building a bar 100 yards away from the Uruguayan’s restaurant.
The Barcelona talisman may be missing his old strike partner, sold to Atletico Madrid last summer, on the pitch but will soon have even greater ties to him off it.

A construction site in Castelldefels will soon become Lionel Messi’s bar

The site is just 100 yards away from Luis Suarez’s restaurant

In 2017, Suarez opened ‘Chalito’, a trendy restaurant on the beachfront of Castelldefels, a short hop down the coast from Barcelona city centre.
Just 100 yards away, Messi is setting up shop on the same road.
SunSport pictures show a construction site behind a steel fence that will eventually become the home of the Argentine’s bar.
Messi, 33, has called Castelldefels home since 2009 and was joined by neighbour Suarez, 34, when he moved to Barcelona from Liverpool in 2014.

The pair regularly holiday together and often shared the school run when their kids attended the same school.
Last summer, former Barcelona star Cesc Fabregas joined Messi and Suarez, along with their partners Daniella Semaan, Antonella Roccuzzo, Sofia Babi for a luxurious yacht holiday on the Mediterranean.

The £40,000-a-week vessel hosted the trio’s families as they cruised around the Balearic Islands before touching down on Formentera.
At the same time both Messi and Suarez looked set for moves away from the Camp Nou, as their futures appeared to become intrinsically linked.

Visits to each other’s houses fuelled speculation over their decision but only the former Ajax man left.
Since moving to Atletico, Suarez has guided his new side to the summit of the league while his 16-goal tally means he shares the top of LaLiga’s scoring charts with his old pal.

Messi hit out at Barcelona bosses for allowing his strike partner to leave.
When Suarez’s exit was confirmed, he wrote online: “It will be strange to see you with another shirt and much more to face you.
“You deserved the goodbye for what you are: one of the most important players in the club’s history, achieving important things both as a group and individually.
“And not to get kicked out like they did. But the truth is that at this point nothing surprises me. I wish you all the best in this new challenge. I love you very much.”

Chelsea fans mocked Atletico Madrid as ‘Spanish Burnley’ trends on Twitter after Simeone’s boring defensive display

CHELSEA fans took aim at the below-par Atletico Madrid last night – with ‘Spanish Burnley’ trending on Twitter.
The Blues claimed a 1-0 win over Diego Simeone’s Atleti on Tuesday with comparisons made between the LaLiga side and the Clarets.

Sean Dyche’s Burnley are notorious for their tough-to-beat style, while not being afraid of sitting deep and playing long balls forward.
Many fans and pundits accused Atletico of a lack of ambition against Chelsea, failing to fire off a shot on target while controlling just 37 per cent of possession.
Los Rojiblancos’ pass success rate of 75 per cent was a tick above Burnley’s average this season (71.4 per cent) but some way off their opponents in the Champions League last-16 first leg (86.6 per cent).
The defensive stance taken by Simeone’s side, along with images of the Atleti defence sitting very deep, led to fan taunts online.

One Chelsea fan on Twitter claimed: “The LaLiga title challengers?? More like the Spanish Burnley.”
Another added: “Atletico Madrid are the Spanish Burnley…. Ffs 6 defenders.”
A Blues supporter remarked: “You people actually thought this Spanish Burnley side can score against Chelsea.”
While one fan account tweeted: “Realise we’re actually playing against the Spanish Burnley today.”

And one Clarets fan joked: “Spanish Burnley is trending. We have triggered so many fanbases and I absolutely love it.”
Atletico sit top of LaLiga by three points, having scored the second-highest number of goals and conceded the lowest number.
Rio Ferdinand told the BT Sport studio that Spanish football was in a sorry state if that was the sort of performance put in by its best team, who knocked out Liverpool at this stage of last year’s competition.
The ex-defender stated: “This is a big reflection how poor LaLiga is at the moment, Atletico didn’t really threaten.

We need to have more of the ball and position ourselves better in attack. We’ll work on it.
    Diego Simeone

“Chelsea seemed to coast, it was a fantastic finish, and they didn’t get tested after that. Not being at the stadium helps as well. They feed off that and probably lost that edge as well.”
Atletico have won only one of their last five in all competitions and fell on Tuesday night to an Olivier Giroud overhead kick.
The return leg takes place on March 17 at Stamford Bridge, and coach Simeone vowed to improve his side before then.
The Argentine told reporters: “We’ll be playing against an opponent with speed and will need to be able to stop it, to deal with forwards like Giroud and other powerful players.

“We need to have more of the ball and position ourselves better in attack. We’ll work on it, but we also have an important game against Villarreal.
“Work, work, work. I trust the team we have.
“If we were in the month of September and they told me we would have lost [to Chelsea] but we’re still leading [LaLiga], I’d sign for it.”

Philippe Coutinho suffers injury setback with Barcelona star set to miss El Clasico against Real Madrid

PHILIPPE COUTINHO has suffered an injury setback which looks to have ruled him out of Barcelona’s El Clasico against Real Madrid.
The Brazilian damaged the external meniscus in his left knee in the 1-1 draw with Eibar in December and has since missed 15 matches.

And according to Mundo Deportivo, his recovery is not going well.
Coutinho’s knee is still swollen and his return to the first team looks to be delayed.
The playmaker underwent surgery on January 2 and a recovery period of three months was set.
Barca wanted him to return in time for El Clasico, scheduled for April 10, but it now looks unlikely.

Coutinho spent last season on loan at Bayern Munich having fallen out of favour at the Nou Camp.
But under new boss Ronald Koeman, the 28-year-old was given a second chance.
Coutinho has since made 14 appearances in total, scoring three goals with two assists.

He has played primarily through the middle – opposed to out wide – in the position that made him a Premier League star at Liverpool.
Barca have been further rocked by the news that 18-year-old sensation Ansu Fati’s recovery from a knee injury is also slower than anticipated.
The midfielder has missed 26 games and despite undergoing surgery, his targeted return in March is due to be pushed back.

Luis Suarez lashes out at ‘disrespectful’ Barcelona for kicking him out of club because he was ‘too old’

LUIS SUAREZ has blasted Barcelona for kicking him out in the summer for being ‘too old’.
The Uruguayan, 34, has been a massive success at LaLiga leaders Atletico Madrid since his tearful Nou Camp exit at the end of last season.

Suarez is the division’s top scorer on 16 – but the way the striker’s six-year stint at Barcelona came to an end still leaves a bitter taste in his mouth.
He told France Football: “What really bothered me was when they told me that I was old and that I could no longer play at a high level, be up to [leading] a great team.
“That’s what I did not like. If I hadn’t done anything at a club like Barca for three or four seasons, I would have understood.
“But, every year at Barca, I scored more than 20 goals per season. I have always had good statistics, just behind Leo (Messi).”

What really bothered me was when they told me that I was old and that I could no longer play at a high level
    Luis Suarez

“At Barca, circumstances have changed, the club needed changes. And I accepted it. The only thing that bothered me was the way [it happened]. I think I deserved some respect.
“It was a decision that I could not prevent. I felt like I was no longer being counted on, so with my pride I told myself that I was going to continue to show what I am worth.
“This is why the idea of going to Atletico, a competitive team, appealed to me.”

SunSport previously reported that Suarez could reportedly leave Atletico on a FREE this summer but wants to stay.
And the man himself has claimed he still has years left at the top level amid rumours that the former Liverpool star could retire soon.

Ex-Chelsea star Filipe Luis lists Eden Hazard in top three footballers on earth with Cristiano Ronaldo missing out

EDEN HAZARD is among the world’s top three footballers, according to Filipe Luis.
The Flamengo defender, formerly of Chelsea, Atletico Madrid and the Brazil national team, believes Hazard ranks alongside Neymar and Lionel Messi.

In a single season at Stamford Bridge, Luis witnessed the Belgian at his scintillating best, winning the 2014-15 Premier League and League Cup.
But he was left feeling that Hazard still could have done more to become the very best player around.
Luis told the Mail: “Eden along with Neymar are the best players I have ever played alongside – up there with Messi.
“He didn’t train well, five minutes before the game he would be playing Mario Kart in the dressing room.

“He would warm-up without tying his bootlaces up.
“But then no one could take the ball off of him. He would dribble past three or four players and win games on his own.

    “Hazard has so much talent.

“Perhaps he lacks a little bit of ambition to say, ‘I am going to be the best player in the world’. Because he could be.”
Many of Luis’ 44 caps for Brazil came alongside Neymar, who led Paris Saint-Germain to last season’s Champions League final.
The left-back, 35, has not played in the same team as Barcelona hero Messi but faced him many times in Spain.

And he only won three of his 26 encounters with the Catalan giants, losing 13 times and getting sent off twice.
One particularly bruising meeting saw Messi net a hat-trick in a May 2011 win over Atleti, which saw Luis subbed off late on.
The veteran decided not to include Real Madrid legend Cristiano Ronaldo in his top three, despite suffering more defeats to Los Blancos (14) than any other side throughout his career.

Ex-Barcelona star Mathieu claims Messi and Co gave him no support in dressing room in nightmare final season

JEREMY MATHIEU has slammed the treatment of players at Barcelona, claiming that he was given no support in his last year at the club.
Luis Enrique, in charge during the Frenchman’s Camp Nou stint between 2014 to 2017, ‘did not talk to’ the player during his struggles.

Barcelona won a Champions League, two LaLiga titles and three Copa del Rey crowns during Mathieu’s time with the club.
But his final season saw him castigated for two poor performances as the Catalans missed out in the league and Europe.
Mathieu, 37, was hooked after 45 minutes of a 2-0 defeat to Malaga that served to end Barcelona’s title hopes.
Three days later, he was again taken off midway through a 3-0 loss at Juventus that knocked them out of the Champions League and became his final appearance for the team.

Huge criticism of the centre-back led to him being outcast inside the club, he has asserted.
Mathieu told Catalan radio station RAC1: “I had a very bad time in my last year with Barcelona.

Antoine Griezmann’s move to Barcelona was labelled ‘wrong’ by the ex-defenderCredit: AP:Associated Press
“I had the feeling I was blamed for the 3-0 defeat in Turin, but football is played with eleven players, not just one.
“I felt alone in the dressing room.

“No one offered support. For me, that’s not football.”
Mathieu likened his situation in 2017 to that of Clement Lenglet.
The Frenchman was hammered for his performances against Paris Saint-Germain and Cadiz, the latter leaving him in tears as he left the Camp Nou having given away a late penalty.
Retired defender Mathieu added: “Everyone is killing Lenglet now, and I know what that’s like. He has to try and be positive and to turn it around, and try his best.”

I think Griezmann was wrong to sign for Barcelona.
    Jeremy Mathieu

Barcelona look set to end the season without a trophy and Mathieu believes Antoine Griezmann must up his game.
After costing the Blaugrana £105million, the striker’s lack of consistent world-class form led to his countryman’s dour review of the transfer.
He added: “[Griezmann] isn’t at the level he was at Atletico.
“I think he was wrong to sign for Barcelona. At Atletico he was an important part of the team, and I don’t know if he has that place at Barcelona.”

Barcelona star Lenglet in tears as he leaves Camp Nou after giving away last-minute penalty in Cadiz draw

BARCELONA’S draw with Cadiz left Clement Lenglet in tears as he drove home on Sunday.
The Frenchman was the unfortunate culprit behind the last-minute penalty that made it 1-1 at the Camp Nou.

Clement Lenglet appeared to wipe away tears as he left the Camp Nou

The upset defender had conceded a late penalty to Cadiz on Sunday

In footage posted on TikTok, via Marca, Lenglet appeared to be tentatively hiding his face as he met fans by the stadium exit.
One youngster posed for a selfie through the upset defender’s car window.
Lenglet, 25, has enjoyed a rapid ascent having started his career in Ligue 2 with Nancy before winning promotion and moving to Sevilla in January 2017.
After only 18 months in Andalusia, the centre-back was signed by Barcelona and has been a regular under a number of coaches.

But a late challenge on Cadiz’s Ruben Sobrino conceded an 89th-minute penalty on the weekend, after Lionel Messi’s spot-kick put the Catalans a goal up.
Former Reading midfielder Alex Fernandez, brother of Real Madrid star Nacho, stepped up to convert the penalty for a famous point for the relegation-battling side.

I don’t know if the defender should risk going for the ball. Maybe not.
    Ronald Koeman

The draw left Barcelona fourth and all but out of the LaLiga title race despite Atletico Madrid’s recent slips.

They trail the league leaders by eight points.
Blaugrana boss Ronald Koeman lamented the penalty as well as his side’s performance, which came off the back of a 4-1 hammering at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain.
He told reporters: “I think [the penalty] is questionable, but it can be given.
“I don’t know if the defender should risk going for the ball. Maybe not.”

Koeman added: “It’s disappointing, these kind of games have to be won and we didn’t do it.
“It’s a big opportunity lost after the Atletico Madrid defeat. It’s a big disappointment. I’m very disappointed, more so than last Tuesday.
“I don’t like to blame the players individually. We weren’t up to the task in attack, and we have to defend differently. In terms of quality, we should have won.”

Hazard would play Mario Kart five minutes before games at Chelsea before bamboozling opposition but ‘lacks ambition’

EDEN HAZARD would play Mario Kart minutes before racing past his opponents and starring for Chelsea, Filipe Luis has revealed.

Hazard, 30, was on scintillating form that year with 19 goals and 13 assists for the Blues.
But left-back Luis felt that he could have been even better with a little more effort.
He told the Mail: “Eden along with Neymar are the best players I have ever played alongside – up there with Messi.
“He didn’t train well, five minutes before the game he would be playing Mario Kart in the dressing room.

“He would warm-up without tying his bootlaces up.

“But then no one could take the ball off of him. He would dribble past three or four players and win games on his own.
“Hazard has so much talent. Perhaps he lacks a little bit of ambition to say, ‘I am going to be the best player in the world’. Because he could be.”
Luis, 35, was something of a bit-part player at Chelsea and soon returned to Atletico Madrid.

The two teams face off in the Champions League last-16 on Tuesday with the LaLiga leaders in a rare sticky patch of form during an otherwise excellent campaign.
In two stays with the club, the Flamengo star won four trophies including a league title and he also picked up two honours with Chelsea.
However, being left out of the 2015 League Cup final win over Tottenham left a sour taste.
