Brazil is one of the worst-hit countries during the pandemic with over ten million positive cases and more than 245,000 deaths.
Atletico Mineiro, whom Ronaldinho played for between 2012–2014, were one of the first to offer their condolences online.
They wrote: “[The] club is mourning the death of Dona Miguelina.
“It is with great sadness that Clube Atlético Mineiro receives the news of the death of Dona Miguelina, mother of @10Ronaldinho.

“The Atleticana Family is in mourning and shares the moment of pain with their idol.
“May God welcome you with open arms and comfort the heart of our eternal ace. Rest in peace, Dona Miguelina.”
Ronaldinho, 40, revealed his mum had been taken to hospital before Christmas.
He wrote: “Dear friends, my mother has Covid-19 and we are fighting so that she recovers soon.

Man Utd pulled the plug on Thiago transfer as David Moyes didn’t know enough about him and then signed Fellaini

MANCHESTER UNITED were close to signing Bayern Munich star Thiago in 2013 but David Moyes vetoed it.
Instead the Scot signed Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini on deadline day.

David Moyes vetoed Man Utd’s signing of Thiago in 2013

The Scot instead signed Marouane Fellaini from Everton

Thiago ended up signing for Bayern where he has since won seven Bundesliga titles and a Champions League.
Whereas Fellaini only managed an FA Cup, a League Cup and a Europa League title with United.
Sir Alex Ferguson had set up a £17million deal to sign Thiago, 29, from Barcelona before his retirement, according to ESPN.
⚽ Read our Man United live blog for the latest news from Old Trafford

But once he had left Old Trafford the decision fell to his replacement – and now West Ham manager – Moyes.
Thiago was said to be keen on a Nou Camp exit in order to play first-team football.
But Moyes reportedly shut the move down because he did not know enough about the Spanish international.
The Scot had been told by United chiefs they were planning a mega move that summer – with Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo being mentioned.

And as a result he held off on giving the Thiago deal the green light.

United reportedly attempted to sign Thiago’s Barca team-mate Cesc Fabregas instead but that move also fell through.
So having missed out on several targets, Moyes was forced to raid his old club and sign Fellaini on the last day of the summer transfer window.
Thiago made a belated move to the Premier League last summer, joining Liverpool in a £25million deal.

Valladolid 0 Real Madrid 1: Casemiro header wins it as depleted Los Blancos go just THREE points behind leaders Atletico

Earlier on, Atleti squandered the chance to re-energise their trophy claim when losing 2-0 at home to Levante.
And Real seized the opportunity by taking all three points at Estadio Jose Zorrilla.
Zinedine Zidane was without several key players including Karim Benzema, Eden Hazard and Sergio Ramos.
But Los Blancos won a tight encounter thanks to a number of good saves by Thibaut Courtois and a second-half header from Casemiro.

The Brazilian rose highest from a Toni Kroos free-kick to net his sixth goal of the campaign.
With their fourth win in a row, Madrid went three points off Atletico, who have a game in hand, and six ahead of Barcelona, who are two games back before facing Cadiz on Sunday.
Zidane said after the match that he could not risk Karim Benzema while the French striker recovers from an unspecified injury.
Real will hope to have him fit for Wednesday’s trip to Atalanta and the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

Speaking after the win, Zidane told reporters: “We are good, we are achieving consistency with our results.

“We are going to prepare for the game on Wednesday in the best possible way.”

Atletico Madrid suffer shock defeat to Levante ahead of crunch Champions League clash with Chelsea on Tuesday

ATLETICO MADRID will face Chelsea on a sticky run of form following a 2-0 defeat to Levante on Saturday.
Without Kieran Trippier and Stefan Savic, Diego Simeone’s side shot themselves in the foot after half an hour at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Geoffrey Kondogbia lost the ball on the 18-yard line to allow Jose Luis Morales a shot on goal.
The veteran beat Jan Oblak with a powerful effort that arrowed in off the post, marking his 12th goal of the season.
Luis Suarez, going into the game with seven goals in his last five, hit the post from a free-kick as Atleti chased a leveller.
Simeone threw on Lyon loanee Moussa Dembele for his debut as well as Thomas Lemar, both having recovered from coronavirus.

But Levante held firm and nabbed a second goal late on through Jorge de Frutos.
With goalkeeper Oblak up for a 94th-minute corner, De Frutos intercepted a pass by his box and raced forward to the halfway line, before hitting the empty net with a long-range effort.
The defeat left Atletico’s lead atop LaLiga at just six points, having used up their games in hand and with just one win in their last four.
Los Colchoneros faced Levante twice in a week due to postponed fixtures earlier in the year, drawing 1-1 with the Valencians last Wednesday.

Next up are Chelsea on Tuesday night in the first leg of their last-16 Champions League tie.
The Blues head into the Madrid match-up on good form and remain unbeaten under Thomas Tuchel, although they could only manage a 1-1 draw with Southampton.
Coach Simeone stated his optimism that Atletico would get out of their rut and re-energise their title tilt.
He told reporters: “These seasons are always the same, there are moments with difficulties.
“It is the same for everyone. Those who are strong in bad moments are the ones who reach the goal.”

Everton eye Lucas Vazquez on free transfer as Real Madrid star ‘rejects new contract offer’ to stay at Bernabeu

EVERTON are reportedly interested in Real Madrid winger Lucas Vazquez ahead of the winger’s contract expiring.
The LaLiga giants are set to undergo a huge squad overhaul in the summer but are said to have offered the 29-year-old a new deal.

According to Marca, talks are deadlocked with Madrid not wanting to increase the terms on the table due to the pandemic financial crisis.
That could open the door to Vazquez leaving despite being one of Zinedine Zidane’s most trusted players for years.
The Spaniard returned from a muscle injury to bag an assist in last week’s 2-0 win over Valencia.
Reports in Spain name the Merseyside club as one of the sides monitoring his situation.

Valencia are joined by Sevilla, Napoli and Everton in tracking Vazquez, as claimed by Todo Fichajes.
Last year, Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham were all linked with a bid.

Real outcast Isco has also been touted for a move to Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
Everton have put together a strong push for European football this season, ahead of Saturday’s Merseyside derby.
Ancelotti may seek a new option down the right flank with Alex Iwobi and Rodriguez used in that role this season, with Vazquez also able to fill in at right-back.

Eduardo Camavinga’s agent says Man Utd and Real Madrid transfer target will cost more than £43m

EDUARDO CAMAVINGA’S agent reckons the midfield prodigy will cost more than £43million.
The Frenchman has emerged as one of the hottest properties in Europe since his debut for Rennes in 2018 aged just 16.

His contract runs out in the summer of 2022 and only ‘four or five clubs’ could convince him to leave Julien Stephan’s side.
But his agent Jonathan Barnett warned it would come at a price.
Asked by Goal if he vaulues the 18-year-old at more than €50m (£43m), Barnett said: “I would think so.”
Camavinga has made 26 appearances this season with just the one goal but made his debut for France last year.

Real Madrid and Barcelona have both been linked with the starlet.
And a move to one of Spanish giants appears to be the preferred destinations if Camavinga was to be prized away from Rennes.
Barrett said: “At the moment, he’s a Rennes player.
“He likes Rennes and, at the moment, we haven’t really taken to other clubs. It isn’t our position.

“Let’s see what happens later on, but he’s doing well in Rennes and that’s fine.
“Being the best midfielder in the world, that’s how I see his future, [with] a lot of medals and a lot of trophies.
“[Madrid are] a great club, a great club to play for. Eduardo will have a choice of a lot of clubs if Rennes decides to release him.
“They will be one of the four of five clubs in the world he might go to.
“Eduardo would love to play for a top club. Madrid are one of those top clubs in the world, so are Barcelona.”

If Lionel Messi does leave Barcelona it won’t be on the cheap.. despite his ‘free’ transfer tag

TURNING 34 in June, Leo Messi is an antique in footballing terms. But the way things are going, I’d say a priceless one.
Even now we would be talking a nine-figure fee for the Argentinian genius — but that’s not the case this year as he will be out of contract at Barcelona around the time of his birthday, so he’s on a “free”.

Lionel Messi is available on a free transfer this summer but he still won’t be cheapCredit: AFP or licensors

A giant chunk of the birthday cake will go to the six-time Ballon d’Or winner and his dependants, as the missing transfer fee is bound to find its way into an already-huge salary.
Daddy Messi does the accounts, not always successfully, Mother Messi is his dearest supporter and the rest of the family stay as close as possible to the source. Or the sauce?
Whether he remains at the Nou Camp or moves to one of the two clubs often linked with his future — Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain — the sums are dizzying.
The comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo’s move from Real Madrid to Juventus are inevitable.

Ronaldo just turned 36 and is still free-scoring, if a little less explosive than a decade ago.
The Italian champs paid £99million three years back and Ronaldo has scored 68 goals in 82 league games — a good return on their investment.
For two players with such different attributes their records are remarkably similar. Ronaldo has five Ballon d’Ors. His clubs would say in capital letters that the Portuguese has given full value.
This is undoubtedly true of Messi although Barcelona are in decline having paid him £492m on a four-year contract. This sum has been linked with fears of bankruptcy at the club.

Obviously, Messi’s recent dissatisfaction at Barca can’t have anything to do with his pay.
Rather it was a dislike of club president Josep Maria Bartomeu and the way the club legend claimed “things were going on off the field”.
There are one or two signs of peace breaking out.

Unlike Ronaldo, Messi enjoys being a one-club loyalist and 21 years man and boy will be ended only after much soul-searching and many negotiations. Plus, the president is leaving.
Very few clubs could or would wish to contract a veteran player for, let’s guess, £1m a week.
The gamble is he’d repay in numerous ways, on the pitch with fabulous skills and a few trophies, plus a big commercial uplift.
Further, the two stand-outs are owned by families in Saudi Arabia and the Abu Dhabi, so money is not an issue.
PSG’s attractions to Messi must be joining Neymar and Kylian Mbappe at a club with a desperate desire to win the Champions’ League for the first time.

With City, he would be playing for manager Pep Guardiola, with whom he and Barca ruled Europe.
For any rival club, Messi money could be a diamond choker too tight — given Covid, lack of gate money, no corporate revenue and broadcast sums reducing.
Such a pay-day could be the last of its type — rather like the supermodels of the 90s — but instead of refusing to get out of bed for less than £10,000 a day, in Leo’s case it’s more like £100,000 a day!

Zinedine Zidane promotes his 18-year-old son Theo to Real Madrid first-team training amid injury crisis

ZINEDINE ZIDANE has promoted his 18-year-old son Theo to the Real Madrid first-team training squad as the club battles an injury crisis.
Los Blancos had just 13 senior players to choose from against Getafe last week.

French boss Zidane, 48, was forced to pack his bench full of youngsters and name two goalkeepers for the 2-0 win.
Chelsea legend Eden Hazard, skipper Sergio Ramos and Marcelo are just some of the big names heading up the lengthy injury list.
After being restricted to naming just three fit senior outfield players on the bench for the 2-0 victory against Valencia on Sunday, Zidane has drafted in a batch of kids to plug the gap.
His third-eldest son Theo – a midfielder like his dad – joins centre-back Marvel, full-back Lorenzo Aguado and midfielder Kenneth Soler in senior training.

It is not Theo’s first time with the first team after he trained with the squad during the international break in October last year.
He followed in the footsteps of older brothers Luca and Enzo by linking up with the Galacticos.
Theo bears a resemblance to his famous father with Spanish outlet AS describing him as ‘possessing a tall frame, a fierce shout and a deft touch’.
If he is picked for the game against Valladolid, Theo will become the fourth member of the Zidane clan to don the famous white shirt.

The exciting teenager has already represented France at Under-16 and Under-17 level.
He has also played twice for the second-string Castilla side – the team Zidane managed before graduating to the top job.
ESPN reports club insiders believe he is the most talented of all the four Zidane boys.
Enzo Zidane, 25, is the eldest of Zidane’s four children and made his Real Madrid debut in the Copa del Rey in 2016, scoring in the 6-1 win over Cultural Leonesa.
The midfielder has 1.3million Instagram followers but was released by Almeria in October following failed stints in Portugal and Switzerland and is now unattached.
Luca Zidane, 22, is a keeper who fans will remember as Madrid’s third-choice shot-stopper in 2017-18.
He made two league appearances and conceded four goals before being shipped out on loan to Racing Santander.
The French Under-20 ace joined second-tier Rayo Vallecano on a free transfer in October and is the side’s No2.
Youngest son Elyaz, 15, is on the books at Real and the left-back runs out for the Under-16 side.
