Ex-Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu ‘arrested’ after police raid club offices over ‘Barcagate’ scandal

CATALAN police have searched the offices of LaLiga giants Barcelona and arrested former president Josep Maria Bartomeu in a corruption investigation.
Last year, it was claimed that the club had paid a social media company to plant online criticism of key club figures in a scandal dubbed ‘Barcagate’.

Lionel Messi, Pep Guardiola, Xavi and Gerard Pique were among those allegedly targeted by I3 Ventures in a three-year smear campaign.
These included attacks on Messi’s reluctance to sign a new contract at the Nou Camp while Pique was targeted following his project to revamp tennis’ Davis Cup.
Barcelona’s then-president Bartomeu denied the accusations last February.
But eight club members launched an official police complaint, prompting an investigation that has been ongoing for several months.

It is alleged that the approximate £170,000 fee I3 Ventures charged for each of six contracts were just below the threshold at which the club’s commission are required to sign off spending.
On Monday, police seized evidence and arrested four individuals, with further arrests not ruled out according to Catalan radio station Cadena SER.
Bartomeu was reportedly detained along with former advisor Jaume Masferrer – fired by the club in October for his role in the scandal – chief executive Oscar Grau, and legal head Roma Gomez Ponti.
Police were picture raiding the club offices, namely the legal, financial and compliance departments.

A police spokesperson told AFP that ‘arrests were taking place’, before adding: “We are in the process of carrying out an operation right now with agents of the financial crimes unit.”
In a statement, Barcelona insisted they will collaborate with officials in their investigation.
Th club stated: “Before the entry and search by the Catalan Police force this morning at the Camp Nou offices under the instruction of the Instructing Court number 13 in Barcelona, which is in charge of the case relating to the contacting of monitoring services on social networks, FC Barcelona have offered up their full collaboration to the legal and police authorities to help make clear facts which are subject to investigation.
“The information and documentation requested by the judicial police force relate strictly to the facts relative to this case.
“FC Barcelona express its great respect for the judicial process in place and for the principle of presumed innocence for the people affected within the remit of this investigation.”
Documents relating to the case were also taken in a search conducted last July.

Official charges against those involved have not been ruled out, for unfair administration and corruption between individuals.
Once the claims emerged in early 2020, former chief Bartomeu admitted to hiring I3 Ventures for social media analysis but insisted the agreement had no link to criticism of Messi and Co.
Claims have also been made that Barcelona paid significantly above, around 600 per cent, the market rate for the service.
An external audit by PricewaterhouseCoopers was commissioned, which found no wrongdoing on the club’s behalf and the contracts were cancelled.
Speaking last year, star striker Messi confessed to finding the situation ‘strange’ while Pique slammed the club’s actions.
He said in October: “It’s a disgrace the club actually spent money to criticise us.

“It’s an atrocity as a Barcelona player to see my club spending money – money they’re now asking for from us – to criticise not just external people with a previous relationship to the club, but players still here.”
In a statement released by Barcelona last year, the club explained: “FC Barcelona roundly deny any relationship, and furthermore, the contracting of services linked to social media accounts that have broadcast negative or disparaging messages related to any person, entity or organisation that may be, or have been, related to the club.
“I3 Ventures, a service provider to the club, has no relationship with the accounts mentioned and, if any relationship was to come to light, the Club would immediately end their contractual agreement and bring about any necessary legal action to defend their interests.
“As such, FC Barcelona confirm that it has services contracted relating to the monitoring of social media with the aim of analysing both positive and negative messages about the organisation itself.”

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta ‘wanted by Barcelona in sensational end of season swoop if Joan Laporta becomes president’

MIKEL ARTETA is on a shortlist of candidates to replace Ronald Koeman as Barcelona boss, according to reports in Spain.
The LaLiga giants look likely to miss out on silverware this season, which could cost the Dutch coach his job.

Presidential elections taking place at the end of the week will play a huge role in the direction of the club.
According to Catalan radio station RAC1, frontrunner Joan Laporta has added Arteta to his list of potential new coaches.
Barcelona legend Xavi, currently managing Qatari league leaders Al Sadd, is thought to be the preferred option for the dugout.
But Laporta is yet to decide whether or not to stick with Koeman, who will at least be given until the end of the season if the 58-year-old is elected.

The lawyer and former Catalan parliament member held the role from 2003 to 2010, famously appointing Pep Guardiola as boss and heralding Barcelona’s most successful era.
Arteta, 38, worked under the Manchester City boss as his assistant for three years before joining Arsenal.
And he came through the Barcelona academy before moving to Paris Saint-Germain in 2000, having failed to make an appearance for the first-team.
The Spaniard won last year’s FA Cup and Community Shield but has taken time to turn the Gunners around, with the team lodged in mid-table throughout this campaign.

Yet wins over Benfica and Leicester in the past week have generated renewed optimism for a good end to the season.
Meanwhile, Barcelona sit second in LaLiga, five points off leaders Atletico Madrid, who have a game in hand.
This month will see Koeman’s side attempt huge comebacks in both the Champions League and Copa del Rey, where they face 4-1 and 2-0 first leg deficits against PSG and Sevilla respectively.

Ex-Arsenal star Gabriel breaks down in tears in emotional interview as he claims Valencia’s decline is ‘f***ed up’

FORMER Arsenal star Gabriel Paulista was reduced to tears when asked about current side Valencia’s ‘f***ed up’ decline this season.
The tough tackling Brazilian left the Emirates in 2017, and went on to win the Copa del Rey with his new team two years later.

Gabriel struggled to fight back the tears

The Brazilian was asked about Valencia’s decline this season

But the Spanish side have fallen on tough times this season, amid financial troubles leading to a number of top stars being sold.
Yesterday’s 3-0 loss at Getafe saw Javi Gracia’s men slip to 14th in the LaLiga table – just five points above the relegation zone.
Gabriel, 30, fronted up after the game, but was left in tears after being asked about the proud club’s sharp fall into a relegation battle this season.
After initially trying to keep a straight face, he could eventually hold back the sobs no longer, showing his passion and disappointment at the team’s predicament as his face crumpled.

He said: “It’s a bummer hearing that.
“A club as big as Valencia and hearing that is a bummer.
“But we have to get out of this because we’re Valencia and the club deserves more.”
After concluding the interview, Gabriel stood pitchside with his head buried in his shirt.

Valencia played Champions League football as recently as last season.
But with owner Peter Lim withdrawing his funding, the 2004 LaLiga winners were forced to cut costs by selling key players.
Star midfielder Dani Parejo and Arsenal old boy Francis Coquelin left for rivals Villarreal.
While young starlet Ferran Torres was sold to Manchester City.
Rodrigo, who scored the winner in the 2019 Copa del Rey win, departed for Leeds – while Geoffrey Kondogbia headed to Atletico Madrid to replace Thomas Partey.
Amid these sales, Gracia was handed no transfer budget to improve his squad, instead having to cobble together loan deals to patch up the considerable holes left behind.

Barcelona boss Koeman forced to cut press conference short after suffering nose bleed for second time in few weeks

BARCELONA boss Ronald Koeman was forced to interrupt his own press conference today, after suffering a nose bleed.
The Dutchman sat down to take questions ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Sevilla in LaLiga.

But he was left cursing in Spanish as he exited to deal with a nose bleed.
This is the second time that such an incident has happened in a Koeman press conference.
Barcelona swiftly confirmed that their manager is fine.
And AS reporter Javi Miguel has revealed that the frequent nose bleeds are a symptom of blood thinners that Koeman must take following his heart operation last year.

The 57-year-old was rushed into hospital last May with heart trouble, where it was revealed that his coronary vein was blocked.
Koeman had to have a tube inserted in order to keep the blood vessel open, before making a full recovery.
The former Everton and Southampton boss agreed to become Barcelona boss three months later.
And things have been tricky for the club icon, amid unrest behind the scenes and with a presidential election looming that could significantly shape the future of the club.

Asked today if he’d be voting, however, Koeman revealed that he’d be leaving it to the club’s ‘socios’ (members).
He said: “The elections? I will not vote because I think I don’t have to vote.
“I have to wait, and the socios will decide.”
Going into tomorrow’s match, Barca sit third in the LaLiga table, having clawed back the gap to leaders Atletico to just five points.
They are on the brink of Champions League elimination, however, having been thumped 4-1 by Paris Saint-Germain last week.
And they were previously knocked out of the Copa del Rey by tomorrow’s opponents Sevilla, with their season now seemingly hanging on league performance.

Man Utd ‘hope to land Jules Kounde on the cheap with club unwilling to meet Sevilla star’s £68m transfer release clause’

MANCHESTER UNITED reportedly remain keen on signing Sevilla centre-back Jules Kounde – though they are refusing to match his £68million release clause.
It is understood that the 22-year-old is on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s shortlist in the summer as he looks to bolster his backline.

Kounde – who has featured 33 times for the LaLiga outfit this term – is widely regarded to be one of the best defensive prospects in world football.
Real Madrid and Barcelona are also in the hunt to nab the France youth international, but it is United that are believed to be leading the race to secure his services.
But according to the Daily Mail, the Red Devils – who are also interested in Los Blancos pair Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane – are reluctant to pay his £68m release clause.
They state that the Premier League side are mindful of paying inflated prices during the coronavirus crisis, and hope to bring him in for cheaper.

Sevilla know they may have to sell to raise funds by offloading Kounde after losing money due to Covid, but are refusing to let him go for less than his market value.
It was reported last month that United were willing to fork out £61m for Kounde in their quest to find a partner for Harry Maguire.
United’s rivals Manchester City were desperate to bring the defender to England in September, but they failed in a £46m offer.
Sevilla held out for Kounde’s release clause, which prompted the Citizens to turn their attention to signing Ruben Dias from Benfica.

Speaking at the time, Sevilla chief Monchi said: “An offer from English football has arrived, we have assessed it and rejected it.
“Although it is more than double the investment we made 12 months ago, we consider it to be insufficient.
“If more offers arrive, we will assess it and decide, as we always do.
“We are not afraid to sell, because that is what we have done over the last two decades and that is what has allowed us to grow.
“It is our model, selling in order to grow. But we want to sell for a significant amount so that we can reinvest those amounts in new players who in turn improve the squad.”

Barcelona star Lionel Messi building bar 100 yards down road from best pal Luis Suarez’s restaurant

LIONEL MESSI is following in the footsteps of best pal Luis Suarez – by building a bar 100 yards away from the Uruguayan’s restaurant.
The Barcelona talisman may be missing his old strike partner, sold to Atletico Madrid last summer, on the pitch but will soon have even greater ties to him off it.

A construction site in Castelldefels will soon become Lionel Messi’s bar

The site is just 100 yards away from Luis Suarez’s restaurant

In 2017, Suarez opened ‘Chalito’, a trendy restaurant on the beachfront of Castelldefels, a short hop down the coast from Barcelona city centre.
Just 100 yards away, Messi is setting up shop on the same road.
SunSport pictures show a construction site behind a steel fence that will eventually become the home of the Argentine’s bar.
Messi, 33, has called Castelldefels home since 2009 and was joined by neighbour Suarez, 34, when he moved to Barcelona from Liverpool in 2014.

The pair regularly holiday together and often shared the school run when their kids attended the same school.
Last summer, former Barcelona star Cesc Fabregas joined Messi and Suarez, along with their partners Daniella Semaan, Antonella Roccuzzo, Sofia Babi for a luxurious yacht holiday on the Mediterranean.

The £40,000-a-week vessel hosted the trio’s families as they cruised around the Balearic Islands before touching down on Formentera.
At the same time both Messi and Suarez looked set for moves away from the Camp Nou, as their futures appeared to become intrinsically linked.

Visits to each other’s houses fuelled speculation over their decision but only the former Ajax man left.
Since moving to Atletico, Suarez has guided his new side to the summit of the league while his 16-goal tally means he shares the top of LaLiga’s scoring charts with his old pal.

Messi hit out at Barcelona bosses for allowing his strike partner to leave.
When Suarez’s exit was confirmed, he wrote online: “It will be strange to see you with another shirt and much more to face you.
“You deserved the goodbye for what you are: one of the most important players in the club’s history, achieving important things both as a group and individually.
“And not to get kicked out like they did. But the truth is that at this point nothing surprises me. I wish you all the best in this new challenge. I love you very much.”

Chelsea fans mocked Atletico Madrid as ‘Spanish Burnley’ trends on Twitter after Simeone’s boring defensive display

CHELSEA fans took aim at the below-par Atletico Madrid last night – with ‘Spanish Burnley’ trending on Twitter.
The Blues claimed a 1-0 win over Diego Simeone’s Atleti on Tuesday with comparisons made between the LaLiga side and the Clarets.

Sean Dyche’s Burnley are notorious for their tough-to-beat style, while not being afraid of sitting deep and playing long balls forward.
Many fans and pundits accused Atletico of a lack of ambition against Chelsea, failing to fire off a shot on target while controlling just 37 per cent of possession.
Los Rojiblancos’ pass success rate of 75 per cent was a tick above Burnley’s average this season (71.4 per cent) but some way off their opponents in the Champions League last-16 first leg (86.6 per cent).
The defensive stance taken by Simeone’s side, along with images of the Atleti defence sitting very deep, led to fan taunts online.

One Chelsea fan on Twitter claimed: “The LaLiga title challengers?? More like the Spanish Burnley.”
Another added: “Atletico Madrid are the Spanish Burnley…. Ffs 6 defenders.”
A Blues supporter remarked: “You people actually thought this Spanish Burnley side can score against Chelsea.”
While one fan account tweeted: “Realise we’re actually playing against the Spanish Burnley today.”

And one Clarets fan joked: “Spanish Burnley is trending. We have triggered so many fanbases and I absolutely love it.”
Atletico sit top of LaLiga by three points, having scored the second-highest number of goals and conceded the lowest number.
Rio Ferdinand told the BT Sport studio that Spanish football was in a sorry state if that was the sort of performance put in by its best team, who knocked out Liverpool at this stage of last year’s competition.
The ex-defender stated: “This is a big reflection how poor LaLiga is at the moment, Atletico didn’t really threaten.

We need to have more of the ball and position ourselves better in attack. We’ll work on it.
    Diego Simeone

“Chelsea seemed to coast, it was a fantastic finish, and they didn’t get tested after that. Not being at the stadium helps as well. They feed off that and probably lost that edge as well.”
Atletico have won only one of their last five in all competitions and fell on Tuesday night to an Olivier Giroud overhead kick.
The return leg takes place on March 17 at Stamford Bridge, and coach Simeone vowed to improve his side before then.
The Argentine told reporters: “We’ll be playing against an opponent with speed and will need to be able to stop it, to deal with forwards like Giroud and other powerful players.

“We need to have more of the ball and position ourselves better in attack. We’ll work on it, but we also have an important game against Villarreal.
“Work, work, work. I trust the team we have.
“If we were in the month of September and they told me we would have lost [to Chelsea] but we’re still leading [LaLiga], I’d sign for it.”

Philippe Coutinho suffers injury setback with Barcelona star set to miss El Clasico against Real Madrid

PHILIPPE COUTINHO has suffered an injury setback which looks to have ruled him out of Barcelona’s El Clasico against Real Madrid.
The Brazilian damaged the external meniscus in his left knee in the 1-1 draw with Eibar in December and has since missed 15 matches.

And according to Mundo Deportivo, his recovery is not going well.
Coutinho’s knee is still swollen and his return to the first team looks to be delayed.
The playmaker underwent surgery on January 2 and a recovery period of three months was set.
Barca wanted him to return in time for El Clasico, scheduled for April 10, but it now looks unlikely.

Coutinho spent last season on loan at Bayern Munich having fallen out of favour at the Nou Camp.
But under new boss Ronald Koeman, the 28-year-old was given a second chance.
Coutinho has since made 14 appearances in total, scoring three goals with two assists.
