Zinedine Zidane reveals he quit Real Madrid because ‘club no longer has faith nor support in me’ in honest open letter

ZINEDINE ZIDANE revealed he quit Real Madrid because ‘the club no longer has faith nor support in me’ in a bombshell open letter. He also expressed his frustrations at the way ‘people, feelings and life itself’ have been forgotten, insisting he was rebuked for challenging these issues.

Zidane’s letter appears in the newspaper AS
The Frenchman, 48, penned the lengthy message to supporters explaining his shock departure after a second spell of more than two years in charge.
He handed in his resignation on Thursday after reports broke on Wednesday evening following the end of a trophy-less season at the Bernabeu.
It was the first campaign without any silverware for Los Blancos since 2009-10 with exits to Alcoyano in the Copa del Rey and Chelsea in the Champions League.
Rivals Atletico Madrid pipped them to the LaLiga title by two points.
Ex-Inter boss Antonio Conte is the No1 target to replace the former midfielder while Raul, Mauricio Pochettino and Xabi Alonso are also shortlisted.
Zidane is understood not to want to take a break from football and could therefore be involved in the managerial merry-go-round this summer as he eyes an immediate return.
But before taking on any new role, he was desperate to give his version of events that led to his exit.
Published by AS, below is the open letter in full…

    Dear Real Madrid fans,
For more than 20 years, from the first day I arrived in Madrid and wore the white shirt, you’ve shown me your love. I’ve always felt that there was something special between us.
I’ve had the enormous honour of being a player and the coach of the greatest club ever, but above all I’m just another Madrid fan.
For all these reasons I wanted to write this letter, to say goodbye to you and explain my decision to leave the coaching job.
When, in March 2019, I accepted the offer to return to Madrid after a break of eight months it was, of course, because President Florentino Pérez asked me, but also because all of you asked me every day to do so.
When I met any of you in the street I felt your support and the desire to see me with the team again.
Because I share the values of Real Madrid; this club belongs to its members, its fans and the entire world. I’ve tried to follow these values in everything I have done, and I’ve tried to be an example.
Being at Madrid for 20 years is the most beautiful thing that’s happened to me in my life and I know I owe that entirely to the fact Florentino Pérez backed me in 2001, he fought to get me, to bring me here when some people were against it.
I say it from the heart when I say that I will always be grateful to the ‘presi’ for that. Always.
I’m not jumping overboard, nor am I tired of coaching… I’m leaving because I feel the club no longer has the faith in me I need, nor the support to build somethingZinedine Zidane
I have now decided to leave and I want to properly explain the reasons. I’m going, but I’m not jumping overboard, nor am I tired of coaching. In May 2018 I left because after two and a half years, with so many victories and so many trophies, I felt the team needed a new approach to stay at the very highest level. Right now, things are different.
I’m leaving because I feel the club no longer has the faith in me I need, nor the support to build something in the medium or long term. I
understand football and I know the demands of a club like Real Madrid.
I know when you don’t win, you have to leave.
But with this a very important thing has been forgotten, everything I built day-to-day has been forgotten, what I brought to my relationships with the players, with the 150 people who work with and around the team.
I’m a natural-born winner and I was here to win trophies, but even more important than this are the people, their feelings, life itself and I have the sensation these things have not been taken into account, that there has been a failure to understand that these things also keep the dynamics of a great club going.
To some extent I have even been rebuked for it.
I want there to be respect for what we have achieved together.
I would have liked my relationship with the club and the president over the past few months to have been a little different to that of other coaches.
I wasn’t asking for privileges, of course not, just a little more recollection. These days the life of a coach in the dugout at a big club is two seasons, little more.
For it to last longer the human relationships are essential, they are more important than money, more important than fame, more important than everything. They need to be nurtured.

That’s why it hurt me so much when I read in the press, after a defeat, that I would be sacked if I didn’t win the next game. It hurt me and the whole team because these deliberately leaked messages to the media negatively influenced the squad, they created doubts and misunderstandings. Luckily I had these amazing lads who were with me to the death.
When things turned ugly they saved me with magnificent victories. Because they believed in me and knew I believed in them. Of course I’m not the best coach in the world, but I’m able to give everyone, whether it’s a player, a member of the coaching staff or any employee, the strength and confidence they need in their job.
I know perfectly well what a team needs. Over these 20 years at Madrid I’ve learnt that you, the fans, want to win, of course, but above all you want us to give our all: the coach, the staff, the employees and of course the players. And I can assure you we’ve given 100 per cent of ourselves to this club.
I’d like to take this opportunity to send a message to the journalists. I’ve given hundreds of press conferences and unfortunately we have spoken very little of football, though I know that you love football, this sport that brings us together.
However, and without any desire to criticise or lecture, I would have liked the questions not to have always been about controversy, that we might have talked more often about the game and above all the players, who are and always will be the most important thing in this sport. Let’s not forget about football, let’s care for it.
Dear Madrid fans, I will always be one of you.
    Hala Madrid!

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Aguero is expected in Barcelona this morning to complete a medical.
The Argentine striker is believed to have already signed a two-year deal at the Nou Camp, joining close pal Lionel Messi.
The current Barcelona skipper is yet to confirm his future but is expected to sign a new contract at the club after Joan Laporta became president in March.
Messi and Aguero have scored an incredible 766 league goals between them during their illustrious careers and would make an excellent strike force if the Spanish giants can get the deals done.
Today’s rumours come just hours after City’s European upset in Porto, with Aguero left in tears as Chelsea secured a 1-0 victory in the Champions League final.
The striker’s younger brother Mauricio del Castillo has launched a scathing attack at manager Guardiola, claiming the City boss ‘never wanted’ the player.

Barcelona are also believed to be close to signing another City player – defender Eric Garcia – with a deal set to be announced shortly.
The 20-year-old’s contract at the Etihad expires this summer and he is not expected to sign an extension.
And Barcelona are reportedly closing in on out-of-contract Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.
The 30-year-old, who featured in every Premier League game this season, is not expected to remain at Anfield beyond the summer.
Barcelona are looking to improve the squad after finishing third in LaLiga, with another free agent – Lyon winger Memphis Depay – linked with the club.

Man Utd given Raphael Varane transfer boost as Real Madrid complete David Alaba signing but French star focused on Euros

RAPHAEL VARANE has insisted his focus is on France’s bid to win the Euros amid talk of a move to Manchester United. The Red Devils are strongly linked with the Real Madrid star as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to bolster his defence.

A number of factors are at play in Varane’s future, starting with his contract situation.
With his deal up in 12 months’ time, Real are reportedly ready to cash in if he refuses to commit his future this summer.
According to ABC, United and Premier League rivals Chelsea can double his current £100,000-a-week wages should he become available.
And Madrid would expect a transfer fee of around £60million having already reinforced their backline.
Any movement in the 28-year-old’s future is not likely anytime soon with him determined to focus on France’s Euro 2020 campaign.
He told reporters: “This is not the time to talk about my future, I am focused on the call-up, on this European Championship.
“It is normal and logical to ask the question and for my part it is normal and logical to focus on the upcoming deadlines.
“We are all human beings. We can think about it. As for my individual case, I am focused on the objectives that we have in the France team.

“It is not a subject that I will discuss every day in my room at Clairefontaine.
“I am focused on my goal, and now is not the time to discuss it. If I have to talk about it, it will be directly with the people concerned.”
David Alaba has signed on the dotted line to move from Bayern Munich as a free agent which could serve as a replacement for Varane.
Also potentially key to his future is Sergio Ramos’ contract situation, with the Real defender’s deal up next month.

Whoever replaces Zinedine Zidane in the Bernabeu dugout may have an impact on Varane, too.
Following the French coach’s exit, Castilla boss and club legend Raul, Mauricio Pochettino and Antonio Conte are among the options for the role.
Another star of France’s Euros bid is also on United’s radar in Jules Kounde.
The Sevilla star has already opened the door to a move with a number of Prem rivals also keen – but Liverpool are not among them having already landed Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig.

Messi is out of contract in June and wanted to leave the club last summer but Barcelona are confident about holding on to the superstar.
Laporta said: “Things are going well with Messi but it’s not done yet. Our relationship is very good, Messi loves Barca – we want him to continue.
“He deserves more and could get a better contract somewhere else but I’m convinced he appreciates the efforts we are making.”
But according to Mundo Deportivo, departing Manchester City striker Aguero is waiting until Messi pledges his future to the Spanish giants.
Aguero is set to join Barca this summer but his move has been held up by the talks surrounding Messi’s future.
The Argentina striker wants to be reunited with Messi and is waiting for confirmation he will agree a new contract at the Nou Camp.
Man City boss Pep Guardiola recently claimed Aguero is heading to Barca to link up with Messi.
Guardiola said: “Maybe I reveal a secret. Maybe he is close to agreeing a deal for the club of my heart – for Barcelona.

Man Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal transfer boost as Sevilla defender Jules Kounde says he might have to move this summer

SEVILLA’s French prospect Jules Kounde admits he might have to ‘change clubs’ to realise his potential in a major boost for Prem clubs. The 22-year-old defender has been trailed by the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal.

He helped Sevilla win the Europa League after moving from Bordeaux in 2019 and his LaLiga form hasn’t gone unnoticed among the Premier League giants.
Kounde received his first France call-up for this summer’s Euros, and he was grilled by reporters at the team’s Clairefontaine training camp about his future.
He said: “Regarding my future, it’s certain that I will perhaps have to change clubs this summer.
“But nothing has been finalised yet. I have not decided anything.
“My goal is to play for a big club, to try to always progress and to win trophies.
“It’s true that I might have to move but that’s not relevant today.”
Kounde added: “I would say that perhaps when I arrived at Sevilla and started playing more and more and also with the arrival of the Champions League.
“It has always been something in my head. I have always believed in it, I have always worked for it. To have it.

“That objective in the sights meant that I was able to have the performances I did at Sevilla.
“Also thanks to this club that helped me a lot and my team-mates who always pushed me.”
Sevilla are unlikely to want to sell the defender – who has a £69million release clause.
SunSport exclusively revealed that Manchester United were eyeing up a move for Kounde to pair him alongside Harry Maguire.
But Spanish media have claimed that Chelsea are in pole position to secure the Frenchman’s services.
They declared that the Blues are unwilling to activate his release clause, and will instead try to drive the price down by offering one of five players as well as cash.
Hakim Ziyech was among the names mentioned, while other players who could reportedly be used in any swap deal are Tammy Abraham, Cesar Azpilicueta, Michy Batshuayi and Tiemoue Bakayoko.

Alaba, 28, was determined to experience a new challenge, with a preference for playing in midfield.
And after months of speculation, Madrid have finally officially announced the deal.
The left-sided star has committed for five seasons, and will earn around £200,000-a-week.
Alaba will be officially presented to Real Madrid supporters following the conclusion of Euro 2020, at which he is representing his country.
He arrives at Santiago Bernabeu with incredible cup-winning pedigree.
Madrid’s new star won 27 trophies with Bayern Munich, since joining from Austria Wien as a teenager in 2009.
Of these, ten were Bundesliga titles – including the last nine in a row.
He has also won the Champions League twice, while being named in Uefa’s Team of the Year three times.

After news emerged last year that he would not be signing a new contract, Alaba was courted by a number of clubs across Europe.

But, after being moved to tears as he said farewell to Bayern following 431 appearances, Alaba opted to join Real Madrid.

The Frenchman hasn’t been a standout performer for the Catalan giants since joining from league rivals Atletico for just over £100million back in July 2019.
Griezmann managed to find the back of the net 20 times this season across all competitions.
But Barca’s overall failure of getting knockout of the Champions League, as well as failing to win the LaLiga title overshadows what has been his best goalscoring return in a Barca shirt.
Atletico president Enrique Cerezo told Spanish radio station El Larguero: “I’d love to sign Antoine [Griezmann] but I think Barça are not planning to sell him”.
But according to Italian Journalist Fabrizio Romano, Barca’s position is different, and are willing to sell the Frenchman should a sizeable bid come through.

Felix hasn’t had it easy in Madrid either since joining from Benfica back in 2019 for £113million.
Despite Atletico winning LaLiga this season, on an individual level, Felix only managed to score 10 times across all competitions.

The Spaniard has played second fiddle to Jordi Alba since his £17million move from Real Betis two seasons ago.
And he is named among a number of fringe players who Barcelona want to sell as part of a summer overhaul.

AC Milan attempted to sign Firpo on loan in January and the Rossoneri could offer Champions League if they come back in for his signature.
A busy summer could be in store for Southampton with a replacement potentially also needed for Danny Ings.
