Harry Redknapp: Eddie Howe suffered heartbreak under me as a player but he is more than making up for it as a boss

WHEN I got the job at Portsmouth in 2002, there was one man I wanted as my first signing — Eddie Howe.At 5ft 10in he wasn’t the biggest centre-half, but he was so knowledgeable about the game, he read it so well, I had no doubts he’d do a great job.

Sadly, he didn’t get the chance to prove it.
He injured his knee early on, which kept him out for months, and did the same again in the opening game of the next season.
Eddie never fully recovered and eventually had to retire. But if his playing days ended sadly, he is more than making up for it as a manager.
And, right now, I reckon he has got the best job in the country at Newcastle — and I include the likes of Manchester City, Man United and Liverpool.

In my mind, St James’ Park is the best place to be bar none. Mega money, a huge financial investment, and the most passionate fans in the game… and thousands of them.
So much so that if Gareth Southgate called it a day tomorrow, Eddie would be on a shortlist of one to replace him as England boss.
But, you know what, even if that happened — and of course it’s not about to — I’m not so sure that Eddie would actually want it. And why would he?
Sir Bobby Robson will always be an absolute legend to those mad, passionate Geordies, but I can see a time when Eddie is just as big a hero.

That’s how highly I rate the job that he’s doing.
He’s building something really special now at Newcastle and doing it his way, the right way, for all he has huge amounts of dough to spend.
When Howe was appointed last year, his first task was keeping them up, which he managed with something to spare.
Then it was all about turning them into regular top-four challengers.
But as passionate as those Geordie fans are, I’m not sure too many expected it to be as soon as this season. Yet the icing on the cake so far is reaching their first Wembley final in 24 years.
Sir Bobby Robson will always be an absolute legend to those mad, passionate Geordies, but I can see a time when Eddie is just as big a hero.Harry Redknapp
And the place will be like a ghost town today when they play Manchester United.
United are going so well at the minute that it’s a big ask — and having to do it with your third-choice goalkeeper makes life even tougher.
That doesn’t mean I see it as a lost cause by any means.
The two teams are so evenly matched, I’ve no doubt Newcastle CAN win, for sure. The key man could be Allan Saint-Maximin, who has such natural ability that there are times when he is almost unstoppable.
The heart says Newcastle but if I had to put my house on it, the head edges towards United — especially if Marcus Rashford is fit.
But if those Geordies are disappointed today, there are plenty of good times ahead under Eddie.

For me, he is the perfect package and destined to become a cult hero.
He knows the game, he’s so knowledgeable and fits the bill in every respect.  There just isn’t a box he doesn’t tick.
Oh, and don’t let that quiet image fool you into thinking he hasn’t got a ruthless streak.
He’s no soft touch, as he’s shown in sending Ryan Fraser to train with the youth team.

Whatever happens against United, it’s only a matter of time before we’ve stopped talking about them not winning a trophy since the 1969 Fairs Cup.
And I’m certain Eddie will be with them every step of the way — regardless of anything else that’s dangled in front of him. More

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte ‘reflecting on his future’ after tragic deaths of three close friends including Vialli

The Tottenham manager has suffered three tragedies to close friends.
Gian Piero Ventrone, Spurs’ beloved fitness coach, passed away in October from leukaemia at the age of 61.
Serie A legend and great friend Sinisa Mihajlovic succumbed to the same dreadful disease last month, aged just 53.
Conte was then mourning the loss of Gianluca Vialli, his team-mate for Juventus and Italy, along with the rest of the footballing world when the Chelsea hero died of pancreatic cancer a fortnight ago.

The Spurs boss, 53, said: “This season is a difficult season from a personal aspect.
“To lose in such a short time three people that I knew very well, Gian Piero Ventrone, then Sinisa and now Gianluca, it was not simple.
“For sure, when this situation happens it brings you to have important reflections.
“Because many times we give a lot of importance to our work and we forget the family, we forget that we need to have more time for us.
    Most read in Football
“This season is making me have an important reflection on my future.”
With his 15-year-old daughter at a key age regarding her education, Conte and his wife have decided it is better for them to continue to live in Italy while he is over in England.
It makes sense given the “here today, gone tomorrow” nature of football management — but it means he has spent a lot of time alone during these difficult few months.
While his assistant Cristian Stellini revealed earlier this month that Conte is not one to talk about his feelings with his staff, that he is a “strong man”, so the Spurs boss will have been carrying all that pain alone.
And it does seem to have given him a new perspective on what is important.
Conte explained: “When work is at the top of your mind, maybe we forget to stay with the family, we forget to spend time with friends.
“But this is our passion and for the passion we lost a lot of things.
“When this situation happens, you start to think maybe sometimes it is also good to give more time to your family and friends and yourself.
“The work is not everything in life.”
Conte’s difficult period has not been helped by his team struggling. Spurs are through to the last 16 of the Champions League and still in the hunt for the Premier League top four.
But results have been poor of late, with three defeats in their last six league games.
Some fans are starting to get frustrated, while others are unconvinced Conte’s heart is really in it given his contract expires in the summer and he is yet to commit to fresh terms.
Asked how it feels to hear that his commitment is being questioned, particularly given what he has been through personally, Conte replied: “I don’t read and I don’t hear this but the people who know me can tell me that I could be not a good coach.
“But about the commitment and what I give the club where I work, no club was unhappy about this.
“Usually when I left the club they regret me a lot because they knew the way I work and the commitment I put into the club.”
The former Chelsea, Juventus and Inter Milan chief even hinted that Spurs are keen for him to stay longer because of his tireless work ethic. He said: “I give everything for the club. Not only for Tottenham — for Inter, for Juventus, for every club where I was the coach.
“It is normal that when I finish the day I am tired because I work a lot for the club. And for this reason the club want me to stay for a long period.”
It does not get any easier for Spurs as they go to Manchester City tonight, facing what Conte reckons is “the best team in the world”.
Tottenham can take heart from their 3-2 win at the Etihad last term, when Harry Kane scored twice.
Spurs go into the game as underdogs, which may help given they have struggled with the pressure of being favourites in recent weeks.
Yet Conte said: “If my team is going to play with a team at the bottom of the table or in first, I put the same pressure — because for me the pressure is a positive.

“The pressure allows me to give 100 per cent. If I’m relaxed and I don’t have energy, it’s not a good signal for myself.”

Gary Neville blasted by ‘overworked’ staff at his hotel as he makes £70M while lecturing on workers’ rights at World Cup

GARY Neville has been blasted by “overworked” former staff following his workers’ rights rant at the World Cup. Despite attacking the British government for “demonising” striking workers, he has previously been criticised for poor working conditions in his hotel.

He has previously admitted to being a ‘champagne socialist’

Neville, 47, has built an eye-watering £70million fortune whilst regularly posing himself as a people’s champion in the public eye.
But the ex-England ace has been slammed by some former staff at his Hotel Football in Manchester, who say they were “overworked and underappreciated”.
In a scathing review on job site Indeed, one worker said: “If you love being overworked and underappreciated then you’ve found you calling.
“Typically understaffed and overworked. Training is non existent.

“Always work over my contracted hours and never get overtime pay, I was told to take time in lieu but that’s impossible when they are no staff to cover that.
“Management only interested in turning a profit and don’t really care how they achieve this.
“I wouldn’t recommend working here right now as I know for a fact that most of the key staff are looking to move on due to the conditions.”
Another ex-waitress gave the hotel just two stars as she vented on the employee forum Glassdoor.

She branded the working situation as “unfair” and said there were “no pros from my personal experience.”
“I didn’t feel welcome in the team and management was not treating everybody equally,” she added.
And despite Neville hijacking ITV’s coverage to attack poor working conditions, one former hotel staffer blasted his business as “greedy”.
“Senior management is more concerned about cutting costs rather than generating money, providing a good service and good working conditions,” they added.
    ‘ABSOLUTE PITTANCE’
The Manchester United legend angered viewers as he launched into a rant in the run-up to Sunday’s World Cup final.
The pundit likened the human rights abuses in scandal-hit Qatar to the strikes taking place in the UK.
He said: “The working system of Kafala which obviously through football the conversation has started and it’s been removed here now in Qatar but it is abhorrent and we should detest low pay, we should detest poor accommodation and working conditions.
“We can never accept that in this region or any other region and it is just worth mentioning we’ve got a current government in our country that are demonising rail workers, ambulance workers and terrifyingly nurses.
“In our country we’ve got to look at workers’ rights but when football goes, we have to pick up on workers’ rights wherever it goes because people have got to be equal and treated equal.
“We can’t have people being paid an absolute pittance to work, we can’t have people in accommodation that is unsavoury and disgusting. It shouldn’t happen here.
“That shouldn’t happen here with the wealth that exists.
“But it shouldn’t happen with the nurses in our country either where our nurses are having to fight for an extra pound or two pounds.”
    ‘CHAMPAGNE SOCIALIST’
The pundit has in the past admitted to being a “champagne socialist”, and viewers were quick to agree following his tirade.
One fumed: “Had to switch World Cup over earlier due to Gary Neville’s rant about the government.
“A champagne socialist there to talk about the World Cup. Thinks he’s now a third-rate politician.”
Another said: “Switched to BBC despite wanting to watch Keane.
“You have Neville being thick forgetting about the estimated 6500 migrant deaths equating that with strikes in U.K.”
A third said: “Turned off as soon as you went all hypocritical again. Picking up millions for working in Qatar while justifying it because nurses are on strike. Not the brightest are you.”
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also waded into the debate as he defended the government’s record.
He told the Mail: “I think when most people are tuning in to watch Gary Neville they want to hear about the football and watch the football.
