I quit my banking job to start my own business – it’s so successful even Premier League legend Raheem Sterling loves it

A WOMAN quit her high-flying banking job to start her own business – and it’s so successful even Raheem Sterling loves it.Mariam Jimoh went from working in the banking industry to starting up a digital supermarket focussing on African and Caribbean foods.
Mariam Jimoh started a digital supermarket that Raheem Sterling has invested in
The Premier League legend has invested in Mariam’s brand, OjaCredit: Oja
The successful entrepreneur, from a Nigerian household, recalled not always being able to find traditional Nigerian food such as yams, plantain and okra in her local grocery shops.
Mariam had to visit her parent’s home or source out Afro-Caribbean markets if she wanted a taste of home.
This is what sparked her to leave her established role in the corporate world in 2018 to make the food she loved at home easier to access for herself and others.
The business woman told MyLondon: “The only time I could really get groceries was by ordering online or in advance but there was just a group of products that I didn’t have access to: my oxtail, plantain, and okra – it just made me think about why it is so hard to find these.”

The woman had reached out to several people asking where she could find the food items online but no one had any answers for her.
This is when Mariam started her brand Oja – meaning “market” in Yoruba, a nod to her Nigerian roots.
It is the UK’s first digital supermarket that focusses on African and Caribbean foods.
Mariam believes that locating these very specific items in the physical market can be extremely difficult – as world food isles are not as varied as they could and should be.
    Most read in Football
She said she “wanted to streamline that process and find a way to deliver products to you when you need them fast”.
Mariam recalls having waves of positive responses from customers when she launched Oja in 2020 – and even said the website crashed due to the amount of people trying to use it.
Oja has since expanded beyond a single London postcode and now covers the entirety of Greater London.
The service now also caters for cultures ranging from Nigeria to Somalia to North and East Africa as well as the Caribbean.
Oja now offers a Halal range and beauty and haircare products too.
Premier League legend Raheem Sterling also invested in the business.
Sterling said: “There is such a natural connection with Oja for me. I can get my favourite home comforts, like Biggas and plantain chips, and having access to these products at short notice is amazing!”
Marian recalled meeting Sterling for the first time and bonding over meals that their mums cooked them as well as the connection with classic foods from home.
Sterling has invested in Oja alongside LocalGlobe- showcasing their strong beliefs in the brand and what it stands for.

Ipswich boss McKenna following in Alf Ramsey and Bobby Robson’s footsteps.. and is ready to set his own piece of history

KIERAN McKENNA was in illustrious company when he was appointed Ipswich manager. At 35 he took over the Tractor Boys at exactly the same age as Sir Alf Ramsey and Sir Bobby Robson.
Kieran McKenna is given the bumps after Ipswich’s promotion
Sir Alf Ramsey was just 35 when he took charge of Ipswich
Sir Bobby Robson was also just 35, like McKenna, when he became Ipswich boss
The two legendary bosses went on to lead them to their greatest triumphs. Ramsey took the club from the third tier to winning the top flight in 1962 while Robson led them to FA Cup and UEFA Cup glory in 1978 and 1981 respectively.
And tomorrow, at Fleetwood, McKenna could lead his team to making their own piece of history in only his second season.
Not only can the club win League One but also reach both the 100-point mark as well as a century of goals — something that has never been achieved together in EFL history.
Ipswich trail leaders Plymouth by a point going into the final game but have a vastly superior goal difference so if Argyle slip up at Port Vale McKenna’s men need to better their result to snatch top spot.
    Read More Football
McKenna, 37 in two weeks, said: “It’s an honour to follow some fantastic managers that have been at this club and there hasn’t been anyone better than Sir Alf and Sir Bobby.
“The fact they both arrived here at the same age as me is a nice quirk. Obviously, I wouldn’t want to be compared to those two with what they’ve achieved in the game. I’ve a long, long way to get anywhere near their achievements.
“But those two managers illustrate part of the attraction of taking charge here. This is a club with a track record of giving young managers an opportunity, backing them and allowing time to do their work.”
McKenna, despite his young years, has already worked alongside some top football names.

While at Manchester United, he was assistant to Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralph Rangnick — and worked alongside Michael Carrick.
It is ironic Mourinho’s first assistant manager job was under Robson at Barcelona, having worked for the former England boss at Sporting and Porto initially as his interpreter, while McKenna’s first taste of senior football was under the Special One.
And the Ipswich boss said: “It was an honour to work with him. He was an icon for the coaches of my generation and his background going into management was more unique then than it is now.
“He’s somebody who set the bar for what can be achieved by a young manager coming in from a different background. It was a fantastic experience and I picked up a lot.
Kieran McKenna’s first senior coaching job was alongside Jose Mourinho
In turn, Jose Mourinho’s first senior coaching role was under Sir Bobby Robson
“Jose shared with me stories about the different stages of his career. It’s another lovely quirk of history he worked for Sir Bobby and I worked for him.
“There are so many things I picked up from Jose. He’s a fantastic communicator in different languages, which is a great skill. He was a pioneer in England in terms of his training periodisation and how he structured the working week.
“I certainly took these things with me in that regard.
“And it was the same with Ole, who was a fantastic man manager and person in terms of how he treated staff and gave people responsibility.
“He made people feel confident about themselves and gave them trust and responsibility.
“It’s not always one thing you pick from managers at that level because they’ve so many qualities — and that is why they’ve got to the position of managing Manchester United.
“I try to emulate things that can help me — but, besides that, I’m on my own journey in the game and want to improve myself and the team.”
There is no doubt that two of the brightest young coaches in the EFL are McKenna and Carrick.
McKenna, who has won the final SkyBet League One manager of the season gong, has clinched promotion to the Championship while his former United coaching colleague could take Middlesbrough into the Premier League via the play-offs in his first permanent managerial role.
And the Ipswich boss said: “It’s fantastic to see. He’s someone I consider a really good friend. I enjoyed working with Michael and learned a lot from him. He’s had a massive impact on their season and is playing a wonderful brand of football. But it’s no surprise he’s doing well.”
The Tractor Boys celebrated promotion back to League One
With promotion already secured Ipswich can clinch the title and break EFL records
Kieran McKenna won the SkyBet League One manager of the month award for April
It has been a fantastic season at Portman Road and McKenna says the team are motivated to break that EFL record.
He said: “We achieved a huge goal last week by clinching promotion. That has been celebrated but now we’re on to the next thing.
“We’re just focussed on putting in another good performance to try to win the game and then that will mean we’re the first team in EFL history to reach those two 100 milestones.
    Read More on The Sun
“Even our goal difference of plus 66 is the second in EFL history.
“We’ll control what we can at Fleetwood, which is putting in a performance to get the result — and then let’s see what happens with Plymouth. But whatever the outcome, we have cause to celebrate an excellent season.” More

And ahead of the start of his second stint in the hot seat, he had declared that he is open to taking the job on a full time basis.

He added: “Probably just confirmation that I’m ready. We handled it well two years ago.
“A lot has happened in two years but I feel fine and feel ready in this situation.

“I’ve been coaching for six years, which I think is a long time.
“I’ve spent a lot of time on grass but, probably more importantly for me, the people I’ve worked with and come across have accelerated my growth as an individual.
“There are many people I trust and value their opinion in this training center and also outside who I am always in communication with.”
Mason missed out on the permanent job in 2021 as the club opted to appoint Nuno Espirito Santo as Mourinho’s successor.
But he knows that if he does a good job this time then that situation could occur.
Although his immediate focus is on getting the team ready for Thursday’s clash against Manchester United in the Premier League.
He said: “Honestly, for me I feel ready. I know I am ready. If that situation happens, it obviously means we’ve done a good job.
“That’s fast-forwarding four or five weeks. The immediate thought is the game on Thursday and the game on Sunday.
“We’ve got a big week and a big five weeks before anyone in here starts thinking about that situation.” More

CONOR McGREGOR bumped into Floyd Mayweather’s dad and revealed he would “love to do work” with the boxing coach. McGregor famously lost to Mayweather Jr in their lucrative 2017 boxing match, which ended in round ten.

And the Irishman had some memorable run-ins with Mayweather Sr leading up to the pay-per-view blockbuster.
But it seems all is forgiven as the pair met up again in Las Vegas on the night Gervonta Davis knocked out Ryan Garcia.
McGregor appeared to praise Mayweather’s padwork and professed that he would like to train with the former professional boxer.
He said: “I’d love to do work with you. Would love to do work with you some day.”

Mayweather, 46, officially retired after beating McGregor, 34, but has continued to box in exhibition bouts.
And he last year opened the door to rematching the UFC icon, in either an exhibition or professional bout.

McGregor has also expressed his interest in a rematch having claimed Mayweather failed to follow up on a promise to fight him in MMA.
He said on Fox News: “That was the original, it was a verbal agreement, I box him, he fights me. But he didn’t honour it.
“He didn’t honoured it yet you know, who knows? I would go against him in another boxing bout. I’d like another crack at it.”
Mayweater’s last exhibition was over eight rounds against reality TV star-turned boxer Aaron Chalmers at London’s O2 Arena.
And he later announced he would box five more times in five different locations, including America, Asia and Europe.
McGregor meanwhile is set to face Michael Chandler in his UFC return – his first fight since breaking his leg against Dustin Poirier in 2021.

Ian Dawes has been in caretaker charge since Rovers split with Micky Mellon last month but landing Fowler would be a boost for the Wirral outfit.
Fowler would not need  a lucrative deal as he is independently wealthy.
The legendary striker spent nine years at Liverpool across two stints with spells at Leeds and Manchester City in between.
The former England international retired in 2012, a year after taking over at Thai club Muangthong United as player-manager.

The 48-year-old then tried his luck in Australia seven years ago as the head coach of Brisbane Roar.
Fowler only stayed a year until he decided to step down and return to England to be close to his family after the coronavirus pandemic broke out.
The Liverpool legend then took over at Indian club East Bengal in 2020 but left a year later.
The ex-Cardiff star is still looking for his first managerial job in the UK, where he stood out as a player.

I’m a female F1 mechanic – men told me I should stay in the office but now I’m working my dream job

A FEMALE F1 engine mechanic has risen through the ranks in the motorsport industry – despite men telling her she would never make it.Emmie Jones was told she “belonged over the road in the offices instead” when she handed her CV into a local garage at the start of her career.

But the motorsport enthusiast has proven them wrong and is now working on the 2026 Red Bull engine.
She told the BBC: “I got started by finding my love for motorsport with my parents and my brothers down at the local racetrack.
“Then I worked in the garage with my dad and I always knew that I wanted to be a mechanic.
“I’ve got quite a persistent mother who said if I was going to do it, then I should do it at the top level.”

Emmie offered some advice for girls who wish to make it in the motorsport industry, and claimed as long as you have a passion for F1 the job will be easy.
“I’ve been in Formula 1 for five years and it is everything I expected and more. It is just so enjoyable, it is like its own little family,” she added.
One aspiring mechanic, Abbie McMurry, has dreamed about an F1 career since she began watching it in her childhood.
“When I first wanted to try to get into this it was all “unknown” and [I] worried about whether [I] would fit in.”

“It was hard to imaging being here.”
She said there was no denying the industry was “male dominated”, even down to the tools people use.
“There have been physical challenges I’ve come across – such as tools that are clearly made for an average man when I am quite a small girl”, she said.
But thankfully Abbie said the F1 world has become a lot more accessible for everyone, including women.
She is now working as a trainee with the Mercedes F1 team and the goal is to become a full-time trackside employee.
Rosie Wait has also witnessed changes in the “male dominated” industry first hand since she began her career in 2008.
The engineer has worked her way up to become the head of strategy at Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 and manages a team of nine people.
And now, she said the job is a lot more flexible for female employees.
“It is great to see so many more coming through, both in terms of the graduate intake and when you look down the pit lane”, she explained.
Rosie has earned herself a high pressure and well respected position, heading a group of people who decide when a race-car should stop for a pit stop.
She said: “During a race you really get those periods when the adrenaline is pumping and you can tell that a certain decision will be make or break – that’s very exciting, it can be pretty scary.
“There’s no such thing as being ‘done’ in Formula 1,.
“There’s always more that you could be doing.”
When she returned from maternity leave two years ago she was able to return to an equal role.
However, she still feels there is a pressure on women to compromise their job when they have a family.
“I’ve been able to do that alongside my caring responsibilities,” she says. “My husband is a doctor which means his job is very uncompromising.
    Read More on The Sun
“If something comes up, then I am the one who has to compromise and leave work. I hope that becomes more normal in the industry both for the women and the men.
“You can have both a career and a family and be actively involved in both. It is tough, it is tough for anybody, but it really is working.” More

“So on weekends, it can be challenging as that is when those events are and it is a case of when the boxing is on it can be a case of how much work can I fit into the weekend.

Having been performing “all her life” in ballet, tap dance, modern dance, acting and musical theatre, Alissa is happy having “stamped her mark” on boxing.
She added: “I really am super proud and unapologetic of the fact I am a ring girl.
“It is something I have dreamed about, I worked in this industry doing all kinds of shows for five years and I really dreamed about working for Matchroom and that is now a reality.
“I am a feminist and I know some people have views on the job that I do but I am so proud to stamp my mark in a male-dominated sport and industry and I am happy with where I have made it to.”
The current Miss Universe Great Britain finalist has also rejected concerns over ring girls and their safety at fights.
She said: “The main thing I like to say (to critics) is at these boxing shows I am the safest I will probably ever be in my life.
“I’m backstage and there are so many security guards there, when we are working we have two of them sat with us. It is the safest we will ever be.
“People get so hung up on that with ring girls sitting there looking beautiful, I am not naive. I am there and I try to embrace my feminine side and feel beautiful and that gets attention, just like models in magazines get attention.

“But I think the main thing is that I could go to the shops on my own and get a derogatory comment from anyone, man or woman.
“But when I am at the boxing I am in a safe protected environment, and I think that is the key thing I wish people would understand more.”
The ring girl has plenty of fans with over 12,000 followers on Instagram.
Alissa is engaged to former Peterborough footballer Bobby Copping, 21, after he made a romantic proposal in a graden full of candles and flowers.
Copping was forced to retire aged just 19 after a head injury but now works at the club as the general manager of the women’s team.
He also has the Bobby Copping Foundation, a charity that has been set up to help youngsters with mental health.
Alessia will be watching AJ take to the ring against Franklin and is expecting him to come out on top.
She said: “I really just hope and believe that Anthony Joshua secures the win. I think he deserves it.
“The thing with boxing is that it is such a cruel world, if you lose a fight nobody wants to know who you are, everyone thinks that you have lost all your credibility.
“I have so much respect for boxers because if you watch a football game and the team loses, you can just forget about the footballer, maybe you might have some fans say some harsh comments, but they move on and next week they are winning.
