He enjoyed loan spells at Wolves, Charlton and Aston Villa before he was snapped up by West Ham in 2006.
And he went on to stay at Upton Park for nine seasons, during which time he also earned international recognition.

Fans love seeing him on the big screen, especially when covering former club West Ham’s exploits in Europe, and he certainly looks a natural in front of the cameras.
However, Cole appeared to be a little embarrassed and uncomfortable after his recent appearance on ITV’s The Chase.
The much-loved Croydon-born star shared a clip of his attempt to beat the Chasers on X, formerly known as Twitter, this week.
And it showed Hegerty – known as the Governess – leaving him squirming dressed in brown trousers, a white tee underneath a denim shirt in front of a laughing audience.
The brief footage showed the usually no-nonsense Chaser telling him: “Carlton, big fan of your football skills,” before cheekily adding: “I love your tackle.”
That led to the embarrassed former footy star letting out a huge: “Woahhhh.”
Then Hegerty continued: “And it seems like you’ve got some quiz chops as well.”
Cole accompanied the clip with the caption: “Enjoyed my time on #TheChase #BeatTheChasers @itvchase @itv.
“Also donated to @whufoundation who I work with quite closely to make the community a better place for all. It’s now available to stream on @itvxofficial.”
“Oi oi,” responded one fan to the clip, while another declared that they “loved it”.
Some had already tuned in to watch the full episode and were quick to praise him for his efforts – although you will have to see it yourself to see if he managed to Beat The Chasers.

Admirers online called the “bloody marvellous” Arsenal fan the “best sports presenter” for her banter and teamwork.
The former ITV and Sky Sports broadcaster joined Northern Ireland’s ex-world champion Carl Frampton and fast-talking pundit Steve Bunce behind the microphone at Wembley’s OVO Arena.
And she made a far deeper impact on fans than Joyce did on Zhang.
The British heavyweight boxer was stopped in three rounds – half as long as he had lasted in his first shock loss to the Chinese super power.

Woodsy, meanwhile, won plaudits for both her presenting and her outfit.
The Londoner, 36, was “unreal” to one fan and “so so gorgeous” to another.
She might prefer this verdict: “Love watching the coverage. Great team line-up with you, Buncey and Carl.”
But to a further enthusiast her appearance was the ultimate medicine following Tottenham’s 2-2 draw at the Emirates on Sunday.

The fan argued: “Nothing better than looking at a gorgeous woman who supports the Arsenal, after our not so great result in North London.”

“My word! You were bloody marvellous at the weekend. Natural and relaxed,” gasped one posh purveyor of compliments.

The broadcaster will show all the men’s matches outside of the major tournaments such as the World Cup and Euros.

The channel is no stranger to showing England matches having shared the coverage with Sky Sports until last year.

The move has been hailed by bosses at the broadcaster.
Niall Sloane, ITV director of sport, said: “We’re delighted to bring the England men’s team back to ITV, which keeps coverage of their progress between major tournaments on free to air television.

Coverage will include Jude Bellingham and Co trying to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the USA, Mexico and Canada.
Qualification for Euro 2028 will also be shown.
The Three Lions have been in fine form and look set to qualify for Euro 2024 in Germany next year.
Gareth Southgate’s side have won four from their opening five qualifiers leaving them top of the group.
Last time out England were held to a 1-1 draw by third-placed Ukraine.

According to the Daily Mail, Spain’s 1-0 win has only been trumped by one other event this year – the Coronation of King Charles III in May.
Both the BBC and ITV provided coverage of the tournament, with both broadcasters airing Sunday’s final from Sydney.
However, the BBC dwarfed ITV’s viewing figures for the match as just 2.46million average viewers saw Laura Woods host their coverage.
Despite viewer complaints, more viewers tuned in to watch the Lionesses’ heart-breaking defeat on the BBC.

Across both channels, a combined 14.7million people watched the final minutes of the match as England went in search of an equaliser.
The BBC, who’s line-up of presenters included ex-Lioness Alex Scott, also registered 25.7million stream requests across iPlayer and the BBC Sport webiste.
Their numbers surpassed those of the Wimbledon men’s singles final earlier this summer.
A peak audience of 11.3million viewers watched Carlos Alcaraz defeat Novak Djokovic back in July.

That was despite viewers complaining that they could hear a Spanish commentator during the BBC’s coverage of the match.
Numerous complaints were made alleging they could be heard in the background as Robyn Cowen and ex-England star Rachel Brown-Finnis commentated on the match.
Across the tournament in Australia and New Zealand, there were 25.7million streams on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website.
This amounts to a 75% increase from the 2019 Women’s World Cup, which had 14.7million streams. More

Fans are still demanding a bank holiday despite defeat in the final, though it appears the call will fall on deaf ears.
England’s amazing run to the final saw the squad pocket a £2.4million prize money pot for the FA from Fifa.
That £2.4m is likely to be split between the players and the FA – with the governing body historically giving 40 per cent to the squad in their previous tournaments for the men.
Should the same percentages be used for the women this time around, the 23 heroic Lionesses would get £41,700 each with £1.44m going back into the FA. More
