I’m an ex-Scotland star… Paul Gascoigne gave me his shirt from England Euro 96 clash then ran away

WHEN Stuart McCall tunes into the Euros, he will remember a famous TV interview about Gazza and a funny tale featuring his beloved Corrie. The former Scotland midfielder, 59, started all their games at the tournaments in 1992 and 1996 but they failed to get out of the group stages both times.Paul Gascoigne is best remembered in the 2-0 win over Scotland for his ‘Dentist’s Chair’ celebration but Stuart McCall recalls the day for another reasonCredit: GettyMcCall, seen taking on Germany’s Stefan Effenberg at the Euros in 1992, also took part in the tournament four years laterCredit: GettyAnd one of his clearest memories is a battle with England legend and then Rangers team-mate Paul Gascoigne, in the 2-0 defeat at Wembley 28 years ago.McCall said: “Me and Gazza changed next to each other at Rangers for nearly three years and I’d done an interview on TV the night before the game.“I said my little girl wanted a 3-3 draw, with me to get a hat-trick and Gazza to get a hat-trick.“As I walked to the dressing room at half-time, I heard this rapping of studs on concrete.READ MORE EURO 2024 NEWS“It was Gazza and I’d not spoken to him before or during the game.“He gave me his shirt and said, ‘That’s for your little girl’, and then he carried on running.“He’d seen the interview, I’d not even asked for it.“So I stuffed the shirt into my bag and didn’t say anything to anyone.”Most read in Euro 2024The ex-Rangers midfielder won 40 caps for the Tartan ArmyCredit: RexBEST FREE BET SIGN UP OFFERS FOR UK BOOKMAKERSMcCall roomed with midfielder John Collins on international duty — and it led to a TV clash. He explained: “We’d watch TV in our room and every time the adverts came on, John’d do press-ups and sit-ups.Scotland’s Euro 2024 Squad Revealed as Souttar and Gordon miss out“I got a bit fed up with it and – even though  Coronation Street was my favourite programme – I made sure we watched the BBC all night so he couldn’t do exercises.  He was a machine!”McCall was also No 2 to Gordon Strachan between 2013-17 and worked with several of the stars who current Scotland boss Steve Clarke will take to  Germany this month. And he is sure they can achieve success he was denied in the 1990s.McCall added: “We are not in the greatest run of form but these guys have a chance to go the step further than any  Scottish player has done.“There’ll be thousands of Scots there and there’s an opportunity to go far.“Steve and the players will look back on the last Euros as a missed opportunity but now they have another chance  to make history – and they can do it.”What Southgate said about axed England stars
WHAT Gareth Southgate said about his axed England stars after confirming his 26-man England squad for Euro 2024.
    Harry Maguire
“The decision on Harry [Maguire] is totally about his physical condition and his recovery from the injury. There is no other reason as he is one of our strongest centre-backs.
“Harry has made some progress, but it’s been complicated and we wouldn’t have had him in the group stages. There were too many hurdles to get through without being clear where we might get to.
“Knowing we haven’t got a clean bill of health across the rest of the backline, we need players who are fit and ready to go from the start.
“It was a really difficult call, you know how I feel about Harry, what he’s done for England and for me as a manager. ”
    Jack Grealish
“I have just delivered a really difficult conversation to a lad who is devastated.
“I think the world of him as a kid.“It certainly doesn’t get any easier.
“You put yourself in the shoes of a player, a parent. You understand that for these players this is a devastating moment.
“We knew we had a couple of really difficult days coming up.”
    James Maddison
“Madders [Maddison] and Jack [Grealish] would have provided us with something different as well and they’ve been tough calls.
“They’re calls we’ve gone over and over and over as a group of staff to try to be fair and to try to use the right rationale.
“We back our decisions but we recognise we could have gone a different route. The boys are big characters, fabulous team-mates and great boys to work with.
“It’s sad to have to deliver that news to them.”
    Jarrad Branthwaite
“It’s a bit early for Jarrad [Branthwaite]. He has had a fabulous season, it was good to get him on the pitch the other night.
“But of course, in an ideal world, you’d like that balance of left-footers. For him to be in ahead of the others, I don’t think it would have been the right call at this stage.”
    Jarell Quansah
“Jarell Quansah has stayed with us. He’s not had the experience of an England international at Wembley. It’ll be great for him to be us for the game.
“Hopefully we’re not needing to call anyone else in.” More

Germany vs Scotland – Euro 2024: Hosts take on Steve Clarke’s side in tantalising opener – stream FREE, TV, team news

EURO 2024 kicks off with a bang as hosts Germany take on Scotland in Munich. The winner will give themselves a fantastic chance of qualifying for the knock-out round, so the pressure is on.Germany go into the clash as big favouritesCredit: GettyCaptain Andy Robertson will be key for ScotlandCredit: GettyGermany already carry the weight of expectation that comes with being the host nation. It is the first time they will host a major tournament since the 2006 World Cup, when they reached the semi-finals.That will be the minimum goal for Julian Nagelsmann and his side, though Germany have struggled in recent years. They were knocked out in the group stage of the previous two World Cups, while England beat Die Mannschaft 2-0 at Wembley at Euro 2020.However with the likes of Mats Hummels, Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz enjoying impressive campaigns for their clubs this season, there is a chance they could go far in the tournament.Scotland will have something to say about that with a lot of excitement surrounding Steve Clarke’s side.A superb qualifying campaign saw them finish second in their group ahead of a Norway team boasting Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard. They also proved they can compete with the best after a convincing 2-0 win over Spain at Hampden in March last year. Most read in FootballAnd while Scott McTominay grabbed the headlines with seven goals in qualifying, the midfield duo of John McGinn and Billy Gilmour have been key to Scotland’s resurgence.Path to the EurosGermany qualified for the tournament as hosts but have played several top teams over the last few months in preparation.I wrote Scotland Euro 2024 dance track my wife sings it round the house, even though she’s English They beat France and the Netherlands in March before drawing with Ukraine 0-0 on Monday, but appear to have got over the hiccup which saw them lose to Turkey and Austria in successive matches last year.Meanwhile Scotland lost just once in qualifying – in Spain, winning five of their eight games. However their form has dropped off since with defeats to Northern Ireland and the Netherlands, with the 2-0 win over Gibraltar a much needed confidence booster.Team newsForward Serge Gnabry has been ruled out of the tournament in a big blow to Germany. The Bayern Munich star suffered a torn hamstring in the Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid and is facing weeks out. While a thigh injury kept Timo Werner out of Tottenham’s final five games of the season, so he now faces a race against time to be fit.Scotland were also dealt a setback last week with the injury to Lyndon Dykes, who now looks set to miss the Euros.Lewis Ferguson will also be a big miss for The Tartan Army after undergoing knee surgery which could keep him out of action for six to seven months.Serge Gnabry has been ruled out of the Euros with a torn hamstringCredit: EPAOnes to watchGermany have a number of exciting players, perhaps none more so than Florian Wirtz who was a key part of Bayer Leverkusen’s invincible Bundesliga-winning team. The 21-year-old scored 11 goals and produced 12 assists in the league this season, and has 17 caps to his name, with one goal.Finding a way to get the best out of him and fellow midfielder Musiala will be pivotal for Nagelsmann, and the role Havertz plays could be key.Mikel Arteta got Havertz back to his best this season operating as a false nine, but Nagelsmann has tended to prefer playing Nicolas Fullkrig as the focal point in attack. For Scotland their midfield could be decisive in winning games.Even without Ferguson the likes of Gilmour and McGinn will look to wrestle control of possession, with McTominay the key source of goals.Captain Andy Robertson is ever reliable and Bournemouth’s Ryan Christie can produce moments of magic too.Getting the best out of Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz will be key for GermanyScott McTominay was Scotland’s top goalscorer in qualifyingHead-to-headGermany will be favourites for the clash and history backs them up.They have won eight out of 17 games against Scotland, losing just four of those with their most recent defeat in 1999.Germany have won their last three meetings with Scotland, winning home and away in qualifying for Euro 2016.SunSport predictionGermany have not fared too well in recent major tournaments but with the help of home support they should prove too much for Scotland. 2-0.When is Germany vs Scotland?
