The Italian legend, who is now AC Milan’s technical director, joined the panel to discuss the tie and reminisce on old meetings between them.
In doing so, Henry lavished praise on the defender, before recalling their meeting during the World Cup quarter-final in 1998 which saw France beat Italy on penalties.
And the French star also revealed how he was “SCARED” to face Maldini.
He said: “What I want to tell you is very important and never had the opportunity to say it.

“The defender that you were, for me, you epitomised what defending was about.

“I think you are being humble, because you brought that winning mentality to Milan, so I’m happy to see you there.

After some laughter at the comment, Maldini then replied: “Thank you. I have to tell you that I wasn’t happy when I saw you were playing on my side.
    “We were both scared.”
Maldini stayed with Milan his whole career, while Henry would go on to face Maldini again during his short time at Juventus in 1999.
Henry joined Arsenal in the same summer, where he stayed until 2007 when Barcelona came calling. More

Minala was just 17 when he joined Lazio but faced accusations of being much older as fans circulated his official academy profile picture.
The Cameroonian, now 26, has always denied the rumours and insisted he was not, as some claimed, in his 40s.
He said at the time: “I have read the alleged statements posted on the website senego.net in which it says I confessed my real age which was different to what was stated in my [official] documents.
“They are false statements that have been attributed to me by people who do not know.”

The investigation eventually cleared both the player and Lazio and confirmed his age.
Minala has now departed Italy permanently for the first time in almost a decade.
The midfielder has joined FK Liepaja, a Latvian football club who were only founded in 2014.
The side play in the top division of Latvian football and finished fourth in the league last season.

It never quite worked out for Minala in Italy and he made only three senior appearances in his seven years at Lazio.
He spent much of that time on loan at Italian lower league clubs including Bari and Salernitana.
He also had a brief loan spell at Chinese side Qingdao Huanghai in 2020 before permanent switches to Serie C sides Lucchese and Olbia Calcio. More

UK and Ireland launch Euro 2028 bid and confirm 10 stadiums with shock venues missing out

THE UK and Ireland has submitted its final list of ten stadiums to host Euro 2028 – with some shock omissions. The deadline for applications to host the football tournament is today, with the government already giving the green light for it to go ahead.

Turkey are the rivals to host the iconic competition with the final decision to be made in September.
The Football Associations of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and Republic of Ireland have met to thrash out the finer details.
And the lucky ten venues have been chosen under the banner “Football for all. Football for good. Football for the future.”
Big stadiums to miss out are Manchester United’s Old Trafford, West Ham’s London Stadium and Liverpool’s Anfield.

United legend Gary Neville has slammed the owners the Glazers for letting Old Trafford ‘rust’ and says it need £1BILLION in renovations.
After meeting the FA, United execs pulled the plug on their bid to be a host stadium, despite them having the highest-capacity after Wembley in England.

Meanwhile, SunSport revealed earlier this year that Anfield’s pitch is too SMALL to meet Uefa guidelines and cannot be extended.
England’s capital city London has two hosting venues – Wembley and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Wembley, the national stadium, has a whopping 90,000 capacity to dwarf the other stadia on the list.
It hosted final heartbreak for England at Euro 2020 when Gareth Southgate’s boys were defeated by Italy on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
There were ugly scenes before the game too when fans without tickets piled into the national stadium.
This led to England receiving a two-match stadium ban.
Fortunately that seems to have been forgiven by Uefa chiefs.
Considering Spurs spent £1BILLION on their 62,850-capacity offering, their inclusion could be expected.
Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium (capacity of 53,400), Newcastle’s St James’ Park (52,305), and Everton’s not-yet-built Bramley-Moore Dock stadium (52,888) are the country’s northern choices.

Aston Villa’s Villa Park is doing the Midlands proud and can house 42,640 fans.
Wales will have the 74,500-capacity Principality Stadium, Scotland the iconic Hampden Park that can cater for 51,866 people.
Over the water, Belfast’s Casement Park is selected for Northern Ireland, while the 51,700-capacity Aviva Dublin is the venue for the Republic of Ireland.
The Casement will undergo a huge renovation and feature a bowl-like design to host around 35,000 fans.
And to comply with Uefa rules, the stadia will have to lose their sponsored names – so the Etihad will be renamed ‘The City of Manchester Stadium’, for example.
A statement from the Home Nations bid group read: “The UK and Ireland share a proud reputation as world-leading event destinations which have successfully staged some of the biggest global sporting tournaments – backed by strong government support.
“This includes the recent record-breaking Uefa Women’s Euro 2022.
“We are delighted that our government partners are fully committed to hosting Uefa Euro 2028.
“They have signed the relevant tournament guarantees and will ensure the event is fully supported.
“This will create a welcoming, exciting and safe football experience that players and fans will enjoy in every city and every game.”
It has also been confirmed that THREE MILLION tickets will be available for the tournament – the highest total ever for the Euros.
The bid has been backed by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, Scotland’s First Minister Humza Yousaf and Wales’ First Minister Mark Drakeford, who said it would be the “biggest sporting event our islands have ever jointly staged”.
Sunak added “Football has a habit of creating special memories and in 2028 we want to create new memories for a new generation – across England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland.
“Our bid promises not only world-class stadia, excellent transport links and the world’s best fans but also the opportunity to build a lasting grassroots legacy.
“Euro 2028 would be an incredible showcase of all that the UK & Ireland have to offer and another landmark moment in our proud sporting history. I am immensely proud to be backing the bid.”

World’s most expensive footballer Gigi Lentini had affair with Juventus ace’s wife & ended up in coma after 125mph crash

IN the summer of 1992, Gianluigi Lentini had the world at his feet.A blessed winger, his pace, strength and comfortability with both feet made him the most sought-after player in Italian football.
Wing-wizard Gianluigi Lentini was once the world’s most expensive playerCredit: Getty
Today, Lentini lives a pared down life in a small village in Turin
Lentini tried his hand at beekeeping and launched a shop that has since closed
Serie A giants Juventus and AC Milan went head-to-head in the battle to sign him from Torino.
Aged just 23, he became the world’s most expensive player when the Rossoneri splashed £13million on the superstar in making.
The trappings of fame saw ‘Gigi’ enjoy Milan’s nightlife, while embarking on a sordid affair with Italia ’90 hero Salvatore ‘Toto’ Schillaci’s wife.
Then, just a year later, Lentini would crash his canary-yellow Porsche 911 at 125mph in a rush to see his new love.

A fractured skull and busted eye-socket saw the maverick placed in an induced coma.
He returned at the end of the season, but was a shadow of his former self in the coming years – perhaps tormented by the spectre of the talent he once was.
In later years, he would try his hand at becoming a beekeeper.
Most recently, he landed in hot water with the Italian authorities for allegedly lending money to a local crime boss.
    Most read in Football
His story is one of caution, regret and disappointment.
    The rise
A youth product at Torino, Lentini was instrumental in the club’s promotion from Serie B.
Talk of a lanky wonderkid emerging from the second division began in those early weeks of the 1990-1991 season.
Third game in, Lentini was able to demonstrate his dribbling skills in a match against Inter Milan – with their German World Cup-winning core of Lothar Matthaus, Jurgen Klinsmann, and Andreas Brehme in tow.
It was the latter who was run ragged by the wing-wizard, who travelled 45-yards with the ball, before slamming it past Walter Zenga to seal a 2-0 win. The boy had become the man.
Torino would reach the Uefa Cup final that season, narrowly losing to an Ajax side that boasted Dennis Bergkamp on away goals – giving their fans incredible memories by knocking out the mighty Real Madrid in the semi-final, a tie where Lentini announced himself to the world.
His performances would earn him a world record £13million move to Silvia Berlusconi’s AC Milan – who were the epitome of success in the country at the time.
He would later tell the Chronicle of his fee: “At that time I knew I had great talent – I was at the top of the world.”
But, he wasn’t the only superstar. Former Ballon d’Or winner Jean-Pierre Papin was signed that same summer for a then transfer record £10million, only to be eclipsed by Lentini a month later.
In 1992, AC Milan presented Lentini as a £13m signing

Wing-wizard Gianluigi Lentini was once the world’s most expensive player
Lentini would have to fit in among the likes of Marco Van Basten, Ruud Gullit, and Roberto Donadoni in Fabio Capello’s squad.
He would show glimpses of his quality – netting seven league goals to win the Serie A title.
A loss to Marseille in the European Cup final, though, would put a dampener on his season, as the Italian press made him the scapegoat for defeat.
    The scandal
With an elevated status came an embarrassment of riches.
The simple boy from the small village of Carmagnola was new to the cosmopolitan life of living in one of Italy’s most vibrant cities.
Entranced by the discoteque, he reportedly succumbed to Milan’s nightlife.
The holidays to party island Ibiza he took as a Toro up-and-comer, before his new found hedonism, were just a pre-cursor.
By this time, Lentini had embarked in an illicit affair with blonde beauty Rita Bonaccorso, better known as Juventus ace Salvatore Schillaci’s wife.
‘Toto’ was the breakout star of Italia ’90 – but his marriage to Bonaccorso was on the wane, following reports of alleged affairs.
Lentini began enjoying the trappings of fame
Salvatore Schillaci’s wife embarked on an affair with Lentini
As she put it: “I fell in love with Gigi as a reaction, because Toto had been seeing another woman for months, indeed he lived with her together. I told him, ‘Sooner or later I’ll make you pay'”.
One day, in a hurry to see his beloved lover, it would be Lentini who would me made to pay.
    Life-changing accident
Gigi was in Genoa with Milan for a preseason tournament, with Bonaccorso longing to see him in Turin.
Hurried, he jumped into his speedy Porsche 911 and raced along the A21 motorway.
The motor suffered a flat tyre, forcing Lentini to pull into a service station to get a temporary one fitted.
He got straight back onto the road, not knowing the skinnier replacement wheel wasn’t designed to be driven over 50mph.
After losing control at an alleged 125mph, the Porsche flipped off the road and into a ditch.
Luckily, a following lorry driver managed to pull Lentini from the wreckage before it became a ball of flames.
After suffering multiples injures, the most serious being a cracked skull and damaged eye-socket, he was put in an induced coma for two days.
The wreckage of Lentini’s scorched Porsche 911
    The fall
Lentini returned in 1993, although his team-mates noticed quickly the swashbuckling winger had lost his mojo.
He suffered memory-loss, periods of blurred vision, and dizzy spells.
Many believe the coma robbed him of his cognitive skills.
AC Milan legend Marcel Desailly once revealed: “You could see the skills, how he was before the accident and after the accident, the balance was completely different”.
In the next three seasons, Lentini would rarely feature – scoring just six league goals.
He left for Atalanta, where he briefly regained enough form to earn a call-up to Arrigo Sacchi’s Italy squad in 1996.
But a return to Torino a year later, who were then in Serie B, ended hopes of being an Azzuri regular.
That would kick-start the fall, where he would next play for Consenza until 2004 in the fourth division.
He bounced around in the amateurs, before quitting the game in his hometown, Carmagnola.
Lentini would struggle in his later years at MilanCredit: Getty
Lentini would end his professional playing at Cosenza in the fourth division
    The aftermath
Today, Carmagnola is where Lentini, now 54, continues to live.
He harbours no regrets and is happy to be around friends he grew up with – playing pool in the local bar.
In 2019, he became a beekeeper – producing his own honey in his shop, Miele Lentini.
    Sadly, it’s no more.
Recently, Lentini found himself quizzed by Italian authorities after giving a local crime boss €100,000.
Gigi never denied handing over the cash, and insisted it was just a loan.
The man was later found not guilty of extortion – with Lentini appearing naive to the situation.

From Luton to Lecce, young midfielder Ed McJannet has joined the Irish invasion hoping to take Italy by storm

HEARING a coach yell ‘die, die, die!’ as you train would be a tad concerning for any footballer. But for Ed McJannet, it was just one of the many adjustments he has had to make since swapping Luton in the Championship for Italian side Lecce on deadline day.
Ed McJannet has swapped Luton for Lecce in Italy
The midfielder has followed a host of other young Irish players to Italy
This switch was specifically a linguistic one, with the Italian word ‘Dai’, as it is spelt, loosely translating to ‘Come on’ or ‘let’s go’.
McJannet, 19, told SunSport: “I had to ask what that one meant!
“It’s all part of the adventure. I like to embrace challenges.
“When you’re out of your comfort zone, you’re learning and growing which is important.”
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
For decades the only memorable example of an Irishman in the land of the Boot was Robbie Keane’s short-lived spell at Inter Milan.
But McJannet has become the latest Irish kid to move to the land of pizza and pasta in the last year in what has been a surprising new trend.
Festy Ebosele and James Abankwah are in the first-team set-up at Udinese, John Ryan is as Sassuolo and Liam Kerrigan is with Serie B outfit Como. Kevin Zefi (Inter) and Cathal Heffernan (AC) are in the academies of both Milan clubs.
McJannet spoke to close friends Abankwah and Ryan before giving Lecce the green light.
    Most read in Football
He said: “They said it was really good and that they enjoy it. They said it was tough with the language, the style of football – that it’s very tactical – but were really positive about it.
“It’s great to see people I know from Ireland doing so well in Italy and in their football journey. It was definitely encouraging.”
McJannet had been with Luton since he was nine, becoming their youngest-ever pro when signing a senior contract on his 17th birthday.
Yet he did not want to turn down what he felt was an exciting opportunity and hot-footed it via plane to Lecce with agent Dan Fletcher as they rushed to beat the transfer deadline.
Terms were agreed and a three-year deal signed as he joined Lecce’s Under-19 ranks, working under English-speaking coach Federico Coppitelli.
More than two months on and McJannet is still getting used to the cultural differences down in the south of Italy, where temperatures can soar to 40 degrees in the summer.
He explained: “At the moment we train in the afternoon about 2 o’clock. At Luton, we used to train in the morning. I think the hotter it gets, the earlier we’ll train so that might change.
“It’s about 18 degrees right now. It’s nice. I’m looking forward to, of course, but also dreading a bit when it gets really hot as I’m used to the English weather.
“That’s going to be a massive adaptation. It was really hot the other day and we were doing a tough session and I thought, ‘wow, this is tough’. The heat had a massive impact.
“But the more you do it, the more you get used to it. It’s something I’ll get used to – I hope!”
It is not just the time of training that is a change for McJannet, but also the focus during sessions and the sheer volume of them.
The midfielder added: “It’s a bit more tactical out here, they focus a lot on tactics and shape which is good because you’re learning so much about the game as well as playing it.
McJannet with his agent Dan Fletcher out in Lecce
“It’s tough the training we do. We train almost every day. The only day we get off is the day after a game. So it’s intense but I absolutely love it.”
McJannet is also adapting to the sheer amount and variety of pasta on offer, having been accustomed to his mum’s cooking.
But homesickness has not been a problem – given how easy it is to get a taste of the familiar thanks to Whatsapp, Facetime, Netflix and other online comforts.
Instead, he is purely focused on throwing himself into his new culture and hopes soon to be speaking the lingo, doing two one-and-a-half-hour lessons a week plus practice on language app DuoLingo.
The youngster added: “It’s been a really enjoyable few months.
    Read More on The Sun
“I’m still settling in, still have lots to adapt to like the language. I’ve picked up stuff from lessons. I’m really enjoying the language, I’d love to be fluent in another language. It would be a great skill and just quite cool.
“I’ve joined in January so I’ve got half the season. I just want to give it everything and hopefully chances will come. It would be a dream to play in the first team.” More

Leeds interested in Mateo Retegui transfer with new Italy international targeted from Club Atletico Tigre

LEEDS are reportedly interested in Mateo Retegui – but face a fight to land the striker. The 23-year-old came to international attention last month when he made his Italy debut against England having picked the European country over Argentina, his place of birth.
Mateo Retegui is being tipped for a big future after an outstanding season on loan at TigreCredit: Getty
He managed to get his name on the scoresheet and tucked a decent effort beyond Jordan Pickford.
The star followed this up with another goals days later as Italy won 2-0 away at Malta.
England fans could be set to see more of Retegui with Leeds targeting the star.
Italian outlet Area Napoli report that the club hierarchy are looking at trying to land the Boca Juniors star.

But Retegui, currently on loan at Argentinian side Club Atletico Tigre from Boca Juniors, has never even played or lived in Italy.
In fact, according to CBS, he can’t even speak Italian.
England boss Gareth Southgate recently bemoaned his lack of home grown Premier League options, and Italy gaffer Roberto Mancini has done the same with his pool of strikers.
With Ciro Immobile injured and Gianluca Scamacca warming the bench at West Ham, Mancini was forced to scour overseas for potential stars to call up.

In doing so he found Retegui, born 12 miles north of Buenos Aires, but eligible to play for Italy through his maternal grandfather.
Off the field his Instagram account suggests he is a dog lover, and he is represented by Italy legend Francesco Totti’s agency CT10 Management.
His dad, Carlos, played hockey for Argentina at three different Olympic games, with Retegui himself also said to have played as a child.
Now starring on the football field, Retegui’s recent form was hard for Mancini to ignore.

Since joining Tigre on loan from Argentinian giants Boca Juniors last February, he has hit 29 goals in 51 games for the club, including six in eight this season.
That was enough for Retegui, who represented Argentina at youth level, to be called up for the Italy senior side for Euro 2024 qualifiers against England and Malta.
In doing so Mancini went against one of his own beliefs from years past.
The former City boss recently admitted, via the Times: “Years ago, I said that [only] players who are born in Italy should play for the national team.
“But the world has changed. Every national team in Europe and in the world generally have players coming from abroad or originally from other nations.
“We have players who played with us in the youth teams but were eventually picked by their countries in the senior team.
“[Gareth] Southgate has complained about the same thing, but our situation is even worse. If there is a possibility of taking new players, we will take them.”
And Mancini has been immediately repaid for taking a punt on the little-known forward.
First there was the ice cool finish against England in Naples last Thursday, followed by a smart header from a corner in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Malta.
He is just the fourth ever player to score in their first two games for Italy.
So inevitably the transfer rumours have begun.
In the Premier League, Corriere dello Sport claim rivals Brighton and Crystal Palace are interested in his services.

While Corriere della Sera say Inter Milan assistant sporting director Dario Baccin was in the stands to watch Retegui in Sunday’s win over Malta.
Never playing in Italy and not speaking the language is no problem for Retegui, who could be Mancini’s long-term solution up front as he resets his Italy side following the embarrassing failure to qualify for last year’s World cup.
