‘We’ve been binned and left to rot’, say veterans who will be forced out of their homes by Chelsea stadium expansion

ANGRY armed forces veterans say they are being “left to rot” by Chelsea’s £2billion stadium plans. The Sir Oswald Stoll Mansions overlook Chelsea’s ground and house war widows and 100 veterans who served in conflicts from Korea to Afghanistan.

But, residents told MailOnline they are being “binned” as Chelsea’s £80m bid to buy the site was accepted in October.
The iconic London Premier League club is looking to revamp Stamford Bridge into a 60,000-seat ground.
The Stoll Foundation will retain 20 of the flats in the complex and Chelsea won’t take possession of the others until 2025.
Paul White, 54, toured Northern Ireland when he was 18, and moved into the complex four years ago.

He said: “It’s very worrying but what about the guys and the ladies who have been here 30 years? It seems to me that they’re just going to be binned in an old people’s home and left to rot.
“I don’t think Todd Boehly [Chelsea’s chairman] is aware of it and if he was why would he be so caring for the US veterans while we are just brushed aside?”
Another military veteran, in his 60s, said: “The topic of conversation for most people is where are we going?
“It is incredible the lack of foresight and planning.

“There’s 80-year-old wonderful women, widows, here who are beside themselves with worry.”
The Stoll Foundation received 13 bids for the site, ultimately settling on an agreement with Chelsea in October 2023.
Stoll’s chief executive Will Campbell-Wroe told MailOnline that confirming a move date “is expected to be made in the next month or so”.
He said: “There is some anxiety amongst the residents and that’s understandable because at the moment we are not at the point where I can say this is the address and postcode where you can be offered new housing so of course they are anxious.
“Some of them do have complex backgrounds and experience with street homelessness, we are really aware and conscious of that but no one will be left homeless.’
“That sense of re-providing a community is absolutely at the forefront of our thoughts when we are thinking about what to do next.”
Colin Tiso, 57, suffers such severe PTSD from his time fighting in the first Gulf War he can’t leave his one-bed flat.
He previously told The Sun: “Because of my PTSD I struggle to leave my flat and I’m getting treatment for that. My anxiety is overwhelming. Whenever I get the newsletters with information about the plans I completely shut down. For me as an army veteran I’m scared.
“Leaving the flat terrifies me. If I can’t leave the flat then moving is going to be traumatic.”

Former Premier League stadium to be transformed with ‘red and white wall’ in bid to silence away supporters

SOUTHAMPTON are redeveloping St Mary’s to try to create a more intimidating atmosphere for visiting teams.Saints have confirmed that the away section at their 32,000-capacity ground is being moved to allow more home fans to sit in the noisy Northam Stand behind one of the goals, creating a “red-and-white wall”.

Supporters have long complained that the current layout of St Mary’s – where the club moved from The Dell in 2001 – hands away teams a boost by separating the loudest home supporters.
Russell Martin’s side have won their last nine games at home but Southampton’s poor Premier League form in recent years had resulted in a flat and, at times, toxic atmosphere.
The Championship outfit won just two of their 19 Prem home games last term as they finished bottom.
The club are now consulting fans as to how best to re-work the stadium and will also introduce safe standing rails to the Northam.

Saints CEO Phil Parsons said: “We’ve been listening to fan feedback and we know moving the away end, to create a full home end in the Northam, is something a lot of our fans have been wanting for a long time.”
Mike Sadler, from the club’s Fan Advisory Board, added: “For many years, Saints fans have said that having the Northam End split between home and away fans has reduced the atmosphere and helped away teams.
“The Fan Advisory Board represents fans and support the club in their decision to create a full Northam end.
“We think this will greatly improve the atmosphere, and really help the team.”

Gangs dubbed ‘Balcony Burglars’ targeting Premier League players’ homes as they hit mansions in just three minutes

A GANG who burgled Jack Grealish’s home are believed to have carried out other raids on the home of Prem ace Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Love Island stars Molly Mae Hague and Tommy Fury, The Sun can reveal. Cops looking into the robberies have dubbed them the “Balcony Burglars” after they used ladders to target balconies connected to the master bedrooms of each mansion.

It has become the favoured method of access as they know jewellery, watches and designer handbags will all be close by, allowing them to spend less than three minutes inside the property.
A source said: “It doesn’t take a genius to work out that if there is a balcony overlooking the garden that is most likely to be the master suite.
“And if you find that, you’ll find a load of watches and chains and rings, along with electrical items and designer handbags.
“Most bedrooms have amazing walk-in wardrobes attached to them where handbags and jewellery is likely to be kept.

“It means they can pretty much target just one room and get away with hauls worth staggering amounts of money.”
Grealish’s home was targeted on December 27 as his family sat downstairs watching him play for City on the TV against Everton.
The gang made off with £1m of stuff and managed to get away despite cops arriving less than ten minutes after Jack’s partner Sasha Attwood and his family members triggered a panic alarm linked to cops.
Former Liverpool and Arsenal ace Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards were also robbed by a gang in September 2022 by a gang who used a ladder to access a bedroom at their £3.5m mansion in Wilmslow, Cheshire.

The couple were home at the time and didn’t know they had been targeted until they discovered items of jewellery and handbags missing.
Love Island star Molly Mae Hague and boxer Tommy Fury also suffered a similar fate in October 2021 when raiders stole items worth £800,000 as she and Tommy were in London attending an event.
Speaking after the robbery, Molly, who is now a mum, said: “”It was without a doubt the worst thing that’s ever happened to me, to us, I’d probably say. It was just awful, horrendous, terrible.”
Cops investigating the burglaries have appealed for information and are now looking into whether the three burglaries are linked.
Newcastle star Joelinton’s mansion was also targeted by thieves on Saturday night.
Joelinton was not home when the burglars broke in, and they are not thought to have entered through a balcony.
The robbery is not linked to the break-ins by the “Balcony Burglars”. More

I live above TWO football stadiums – we watch games for free but I won’t let my pals come back unless they’re wowed

RESIDENTS who live in between TWO football stadiums can watch games for free – and sometimes they even get a glimpse of the cricket. The City Ground, home of Premier League outfit Nottingham Forest, is just yards away from fourth-tier Notts County’s Meadow Lane.

The two grounds, located on opposite sides of the River Trent, are the closest stadiums in England’s top four divisions.
Fans of the Magpies, the oldest professional association football club in the world, can even spot the Trent End from their own stadium.
With Trent Bridge Cricket Ground just down the road, the area is a paradise for any sports fan.
Now a new housing development, built in between the two football stadiums on the banks of the river, has provided a perfect haven for anyone football mad.

Trent Bridge Quays, designed to regenerate the waterside, includes 95 riverside homes and apartments.
And the new residents have been quick to take advantage of their unique property position.
Fiona Spearing, 74, owns a penthouse apartment with views of both stadiums from her balconies.
She told The Sun: “The main reason I bought the apartment was the roofed in balconies. There aren’t any others quite like it on the development.
    Most read in Football
“I had no idea what the view was going to be like until the apartment was actually built.
“I tell everybody that comes here if they don’t say ‘wow’ to the view they don’t come again!
“When people see the Forest stadium, the number of pictures that get taken is astronomical.”
Fiona, who supports County and Forest, continued: “The Notts County side often seems to make more noise than Forest.
“When I came here, you can’t sit outside without getting the atmosphere on match days. I’m drawn into it.
“I’ve had two players live next to me in the opposite flat. Jonjo Shelvey used to live there and now Anthony Elanga does.
“I sit on the balcony and watch the games because you can see the pitch. I’ve had various friends over to come and watch.
“The only problem is you can see the away end better.”
But living so close to the two stadiums has not been without its problems.
“In fairness it does get noisy at times,” Fiona added. “I don’t like walking around the area with the big crowds.

“I tend to avoid walking across Trent Bridge when there is a match about to start or finish especially when fans have been drinking.
“There is also an issue here with light pollution because the lights are on in the stadium often all night.
“Blackout curtains help but don’t totally solve the problem. They’ve got lighting on the pitch to maintain the grass and it’s on all night.”
Ognjen Radoman, 20, originally from Serbia, is studying computer science at Nottingham University and lives in a mid-level flat.
He told The Sun: “When the windows are open in my apartment, it’s like you are sitting in the stadium. You can hear everything.
“It can sometimes be annoying, for example if I have an exam or I need to study. Fans are screaming outside the ground.
“The ground itself isn’t a problem. It’s the fans walking between the stadiums.
“I saw once they were lighting fireworks in the middle of the day.
“I can see a few of the stands from my balcony and feel the atmosphere.
“I know when they have scored because I can hear stamping and screaming.
“When the football match finishes and you are on the other side of the bridge, it’s really hard to get across through the crowds of fans.”
Rory Akers, 29, a personal trainer from Watford, said: “We get a view of the Forest ground looking across the river and I think it’s really cool.
“I’m a Watford fan but I don’t mind the noise. For me, it’s nostalgic because I used to live near Vicarage Road.
“Being able to hear the atmosphere from both grounds is awesome.
“You can hear it so intimately that you know the noises of exactly when someone has scored a goal, just missed, called offside and scored.
“You’ve also got Trent Bridge just down the road. My dad and brother are big fans of the cricket so they stay at our place.”
Irene, 23, added: “The noise echoes. If you aren’t really into football, you won’t know where it is coming from.

“It echoes between the buildings. You think County scored but then you realise it’s actually Forest.
“Then you think it’s Forest but the stadium is empty and it’s County. It’s a very weird sound situation we live in here.”

Neighbours told The Sun how armed cops cordoned off a number of streets while a police helicopter hovered overhead.

It comes after several raids at the homes of several other high-profile footballers in recent months.
Last month Jack Grealish’s terrified family hit panic buttons as a gang of burglars looted his new home.
His loved ones, including partner Sasha Attwood, were forced to take cover as cops rushed to the £5.6million home to avoid a potential hostage situation.
The robbers made off with £1million worth of jewellery and watches, while Grealish’s family were left “really shaken” in the horror.

Earlier that month, West Ham star Kurt Zouma’s family home in Essex was targeted while he was inside.
The robbers also stole jewellery and high-end watches worth £1million – with Zouma forced to miss his team’s game against Crystal Palace.
Sources said the gang, who are still being hunted by cops, were “aggressive and organised”.
A number of other players have also been targeted including Joao Cancelo and Paul Pogba.
In December last year, Raheem Sterling was forced to fly back from the Qatar World Cup after raiders struck at his Surrey home.
Terrified fiancée Paige Milian, 27, was at home at the time with their two kids.
She raised the alarm when the gang took watches worth £300,000.
Many of the stars have been targeted by “away day” looters who will strike when teams travel for their games.
This was true for ex-Man Utd star Jesse Lingard, who was robbed as he played for the Red Devils away at Aston Villa in January 2022.
His former teammate Victor Lindelof’s home in Hale was raided the same month while he was in action for Utd in Brentford.
The defender’s wife Maja Lindelof and their two children were forced to lock themselves away while their mansion was ransacked.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 7.30pm yesterday police received a call from a concerned homeowner who reported that three men were inside their home in Darras Hall.
“Thankfully the homeowner was not home but had received a security alert on their phone and immediately reported concerns to police.
