Joshua vs Fury predictions: Boxing legends including Mike Tyson, Floyd Mayweather and Bernard Hopkins on who wins fight

THE undisputed title decider between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury has divided opinions across the UK and the world.
Britain’s two heavyweight rulers have verbally agreed to a double header of fights next year.

The undisputed title decider between Joshua and Fury has divided opinions
Even though they both have further mandatory defences lined up, the pair are desperate to unify the division once and for all.
And the split verdicts on who will emerge with all four of the world titles has only added to the pre-fight debate
Here SunSport runs down some of the most heavyweight of predictions as stars choose their winner.
    MIKE TYSON
Iron Mike has backed his namesake – who also claimed he accepted an offer to fight the 54-year-old ahead of his own comeback.

Tyson said: “He is the best heavyweight champion of the world since myself. He is the man, I don’t care what anybody says.”
The Baddest Man on the Planet also left AJ off his list of his top five current boxers.
    Prediction: Fury

    FLOYD MAYWEATHER
Mayweather was credited for bringing the money to the smaller division – and it appears he still has little affection for the heavyweights.

He said: “We talking about Anthony Joshua, hell of a fighter. Tyson Fury, hell of a fighter.
“It doesn’t matter who wins, if I’m not getting paid that’s none of my business.”
    Prediction: Couldn’t care less

The former two-time world heavyweight champion sees no way in which AJ can prevail.
He said: “That boy Tyson Fury, you’re going to have to bring everything you’ve got to beat him.
“I’m going to be honest with you – I just can’t see Joshua beating him.”
    Prediction: Fury

    ROY JONES JR
The American four-division great – who amazingly won the heavyweight belt in 2003 – sat on the fence but did appear to suggest Fury is favourite.
Jones said: “I’m not saying Fury is as good as Ali skill-wise but he has a mind like Ali. With a mind like that, he can be anybody.
“I think it was at a local show I saw him at and I said to him: ‘If you just give yourself to boxing for five years, you’ll be amazed and you’ll beat all these guys.’
“I love him to death. I’m so happy for him and proud of him that he was able to do it.
“I see him as the No1 and I think him against Joshua is a good fight.”
    Prediction: Fury… just about.

Roy Jones Jr believes Fury is the No1 heavyweight in the world
    TONY BELLEW
Only one winner for the Bomber.
He said: “The top three heavyweights today, if you’re going on what they’re actually doing, you can’t really knock Tyson Fury for what he’s doing since he’s come back. I understand why people have him No1.
“I have to put Fury No 1, but I still think AJ beats him. Styles make fights, and I think AJ’s style is all wrong for Fury.”
    Prediction: Joshua

    7

Tony Bellew has backed pal Joshua to defeat Fury
    BERNARD HOPKINS
Following lessons learned from AJ’s loss to Andy Ruiz Jr, Hopkins has not only backed him to win – but to knock out Fury and “make a serious statement”.
He said: “He redeemed himself. Now that is in his memory – what not to do ever again – Joshua beats Fury by knockout late.
“It will be an interesting, exciting five or six rounds at the beginning. Then Joshua’s athleticism, boxing IQ and experience would overwhelm Fury.
“Joshua would come out of a dust-storm based on his experience.
“At this point he has to make a really serious statement based on [the Ruiz defeat]. Redemption.”

    WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO
Klitschko, who lost to both men, spoke earlier this year about his prediction.
He said: “Joshua is a superior athlete, great fighter, Olympic champion.
“Most importantly, he’s a great guy, who carries the torch of this image of a heavyweight champion perfectly. I’m proud to call him as a friend, even though we were [rivals].
“And I think and I wish that eventually Joshua is going to unify all of the belts. That’s the eventual plan.”

Eddie Hearn doubts Deontay Wilder really wants Tyson Fury trilogy fight and hopes Dillian Whyte can step in

BOXING promoter Eddie Hearn reckons Deontay Wilder will pull out of his multi-million dollar trilogy bout with Tyson Fury.
And the Essex-based fight fixer wants his man Dillian Whyte to step in and take on the Gypsy King.

    1

Tyson Fury smashes Deontay Wilder in their second fight in FebruaryCredit: AP:Associated Press
He will order the WBC to hand Whyte the super bout and a shot at the title which he covets.
American Wilder is set to take on Fury this winter.
He lost to the Mancunian in February when Fury wiped the floor with him after he sensationally KO’d the Bronze Bomber in the third round.
The pair had previously fought out a draw.

Fury is set to fight Anthony Joshua in a battle of Britain after facing Wilder.
But now Hearn has cast doubt on this fight taking place.
Wilder was totally outclassed in the second match-up between the two heavyweights.
Hearn told IFL: “I’ll do Whyte-Fury. I’ll stick the dough up. It’s a huge fight.

“We haven’t heard from Deontay Wilder.
“He hasn’t been vocal about the third fight.
“But we understand the position. Tyson Fury has got to fight Deontay Wilder. Good luck, crack on. It’s difficult for everyone.”
But first Whyte must come through in his fight with Alexander Povetkin on August 15.
And Hearn does not think the WBC have been fair to Londoner Whyte, considering how many days he has spent as mandatory challenger over the last few years.
When asked what the WBC should say to Whyte after he has beaten Povetkin, Hearn said: “You have now beaten a plethora of top 15 opponents, you have now had 10 or 11 WBC fights, and you have now been mandatory for 1,000 days.
“Number one for 1,000 days and mandatory for nearly as many.
“Your next fight is against the WBC champion.
“Will they do Fury against Wilder 3, and will they do it in November or December?
“The cut-off date for Whyte to fight for the WBC title is the end of February, and we expect that to be kept to.

However, it is highly unlikely Fury will take on Whyte before he faces Joshua in a match-up that is likely to break pay-per-view records.
Even if that means giving up the WBC belt.

Johnny Nelson reveals scary Mike Tyson meeting in hotel lift after calling him ‘fat boy’ in build up to proposed fight

JOHNNY NELSON has revealed a tense encounter with Mike Tyson in a hotel lift after calling him “fat boy” before their proposed fight.
Tyson in 2000 had decided to take his career over to Britain and signed a three-fight deal with Frank Warren.

    4

Mike Tyson almost fought Johhny Nelson in 2000

    4

Nelson was set to come Tyson’s third opponent in the UK
He had already beaten Julius Francis and was about to fight Lou Savarese with cruiserweight champion at the time Nelson lined up to be the third opponent.
With a fight all but signed, Nelson was ringside in Scotland to watch Savarese be taken out in 38 seconds.
And after receiving verbals from Tyson, the Brit made the ill-fated decision to bark back.
Nelson, 53, told Sky Sports: “He knew it was me next and that’s where the intimidation started.

“Before then, we were pretty jovial and polite with each other, but when he knocked out Savarese he shouted down at me: ‘You sure you want some of that? We’re going to eat you!’
“I was sat at ringside with my wife and I was thinking, ‘No, not in front of my missus mate’.
“Steve ‘Crocodile’ Fitch was next to him and he’s giving it: ‘Yeah, we’ll mess you up’.

“I’ve got to style it out, I’ve got to be cool, and I’ve got to make out I really fancy this fight.

“I needed a one-liner and all I could think of was, ‘Get yourself fit, fat boy’.
“People looked at me as if to say, ‘What?” Even my wife looked at me and said: ‘What?’
“When it came out of my mouth, I thought ‘Idiot.’ You could see Mike looking as if to say, ‘What did he call me?'”
    HOTEL HELL
Nelson then lifted the lid on how he found himself on the verge of an altercation with Tyson after bumping into each other later that night.
He said: “We ended up back at the hotel, me and my wife, and we were on our way to a party downstairs.
“It must have been around 2am. Mike was staying in the penthouse suite on the top floor. I think he had to change lifts between floors.
“We’re in the lift and the door opens. It was Mike, Crocodile, and his manager. I thought s**t. Mike is looking at me and I’m looking at him.
“I went, ‘You getting in?’ He went, ‘Yeah’. His manager put his hand in front of him and went, ‘No, we’ll get the next lift’.”
“The door is closing and Crocodile is mouthing behind him, doing the cut-throat sign.
“Just before it shut, I gave him a farewell gesture, and my wife was not impressed.
“We got downstairs and we walked straight back upstairs and didn’t go out.”
Tyson – who is gearing up for a sensational comeback aged 54 – would fall out with Warren and not box in the UK again.
And Nelson would never make the move up to heavyweight, instead retiring as WBO cruiserweight champion in 2005.
He remains good friends with Tyson – who will challenge a shark on Discovery Channel – as they still laugh about their cancelled fight.

    Prediction: Joshua

    TEDDY ATALS
The legendary trainer admits it’s too early to make a sure-fire prediction but tipped Fury to win at this point in time.
He said: “If you do the easy pick for 90 per cent of the people you ask, you’d probably pick Fury.
“If a gun was put to my head, right now, I’d go the easy way. I’d go with Fury. But you know what? I would wait a bit of this.
“I could see an argument for both scenarios.”
    Prediction: Fury… for now
