When is Daniel Dubois vs Joe Joyce? Dates and news for the heavyweight showdown

DANIEL DUBOIS is set to showdown with Joe Joyce in an all-British heavyweight fight.
22-year-old Dubois is one of Britains hottest prospects and has a proud unbeaten record of 14 straight wins.

His fight against Joyce is set to be the biggest test of his professional career as he takes on the 34-year-old former Olympian.
Joyce boasts win against the likes of Bermans Stiverne, Alexander Ustinov and Bryant Jennings, just in 2019.
Joyce is set for action this weekend as he takes on Michael Wallisch in a 10-round main event on Saturday from BT Sport Studio in London.
    When is Dubois vs Joyce?
The match was scheduled to go ahead on Saturday, April 11 but due to the pandemic it was scrapped.

Now a new date of October 24 has been slated and it will be held in the O2 arena as originally planned.
Promoter Frank Warren has talked about the announcement of the rescheduled date: “Lockdown has meant a delay, but we all want the fight to take place in October and we are hopeful that the government will give us the all-clear.
“What a position the winner will be in. They will be nailed on for a world title shot in 2021.”

Dubois has been working hard since lockdown began but it didn’t come without its struggles.

He said: “I’ll be ready to go in October for sure. It has been tough during lockdown, but I have ticked over and I’m back in the Peacock gym helping my sparring partner Dorin Krasmaru get ready for his behind closed doors fight on Frank Warren’s bill on July 10.
“Hopefully in the near future I will be able to get some good overseas sparring in. I’ll be ready for October 24, so I hope Joe is coming prepared.”
Joyce was thought to be excited about the news, saying that he was staying on top of training and he ‘can’t wait to punch up Dubois’.

He went onto say: “Obviously once lockdown started I had a good idea we wouldn’t meet in July, but I was always staying on top of training.

Anthony Joshua cried after losing in World Amateur Championships final but loss spurred him on to Olympic gold

ANTHONY JOSHUA was left in tears after losing in the final of the World Amateur Championships – but roared back to win Olympic gold.
The Team GB representative, who only began boxing aged 18, shocked many in Azerbaijan after outpointing Roberto Cammarelle in 2011.

    2

Anthony Joshua win Olympic gold in the London 2012 Games
But he was heartbroken after losing in the final against home boxer Magomedrasul Majidov.
The loss proved influential, as a year later Joshua turned his silver into gold as he reigned supreme in the London 2012 Games.
He told Sky Sports: “In 2011 in Baku when I was at the world championships, fighting the best amateur in the world and I was a little kid who was in trouble a couple of years back.
“I thought, ‘What the hell am i doing here’ it was an unbelievable fight and he won by one point.

“I just remember the walk off and i shed a little tear when I lost and knew I would make it right when I came back for the Olympics.”

“Make one mistake and don’t do it again. Sleep late once, don’t do it again, same with a bad meal. Don’t keep making the same mistakes over again.
    Joshua on learning from failure

Joshua again beat Cammarelle to win the Olympic gold, but it was gruelling sessions on the GB squad that almost drove the heavyweight out of boxing completely.
But after persisting, and achieving his amateur ambitions, the 30-year-old has since become a unified heavyweight champion as a professional.
AJ saved his career in his last fight in December, winning back the belts he lost to Andy Ruiz Jr in a monumental shock six months prior.

Ahead of his next mandatory defence against Kubrat Pulev, 39, and a possible Tyson Fury, 31, unification to follow, Joshua opened up about learning from failure.

Boxing’s biggest comebacks including Muhammad Ali and George Foreman as Mike Tyson makes shock return aged 54

MIKE TYSON has confirmed he will come out of retirement to fight for the first time in 15 years.
The reformed Baddest Man on The Planet, 54, has signed to face former four-weight champion Roy Jones Jr, 51, in an eight-round exhibition bout on September 12.

    11

It marks a sensational comeback for the youngest heavyweight champion of all time.
But George Foreman – who took 10 YEARS off dominating the heavyweight division only to return and become the weight’s oldest ever champion when he stunned Michael Moorer aged 45 –  warned Tyson off of a comeback.
Although Tyson still looks razor sharp and more mentaly stable than during his younger and much darker days, Foreman has told him to stay retired and leave the hardest game to younger men.
Because speed and reflexes are the first things to leave a fighter and punch power is the last attribute to depart an aging boxer, the heavyweight division has a few tales of returning kings.

But the blue riband weight class and all the divisions below them also carry tragic tales of financial desperation and athletic delusion that left great boxing men reduced to rubble after missguided returns.

    GEORGE FOREMAN
    Heavyweight
    Hiatus: 10 years
    First record: 45-2

    Second: 31-3
    Verdict: Hit
The brooding muscle-bound monster lost his world titles and unbeaten record to Muhammad Ali in 1974’s Rumble in the Jungle and the shock 1977 points loss to Jimmy Young sent him into early retirement as an ordained minister.
But in 1987 a rolly-polly fella, who looked a bit like George Foreman, reemerged with a self-deprecating sense of humour.
The affable 38-year-old went on a brilliant win streak until losses to Evander Holyfield and Rocky star Tommy Morrrison seemed to end his career – again.
But in November 1994, aged a cool 45 years and 299 days, formidable Foreman won the WBA and IBF heavyweight titles from Michael Moorer.
The incredible story is one of boxing’s most loveable but is the first argument a faded fighter uses when arguing for his own comeback.

    MUHAMMAD ALI
    Heavyweight
    Hiatus: Three years
    First record 29-0
    Second: 32-5
    Verdict: Hit
Perhaps the greatest comeback story in the history of sport, that helped a man once vilified as a traitor become a global icon, is also one of the saddest and most tragic.
In the Spring of 1967, Ali was the undefeated unified champion of the world with the scalps of Sonny Liston, Archie Moore, Henry Cooper and Floyd Patterson.
But when he bravely refused the Vietnam War draft he was stripped of his titles and licence, costing him his prime fighting years of 25 to almost 29.
The 1971 Fight of the Century loss to Joe Frazier, The 1974 Rumble in the Jungle win over George Foreman and the 1975 Thrilla in Manilla revenge win over Smokin’ Joe redefined the sport and remain, decades later, pinnacle moments.
But the punishment Ali endured chasing money at the end – against younger brutes like Leon Spinks, Larry Holmes and Trevor Berbick – contributed to the Parkinson’s that ruined what should have been the greatest retirement.

    MIKE TYSON

    Verdict: Miss
In modern day 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, Mike Tyson still insists the sexual meeting he had with Desiree Washington in 1991 was completely consensual and that his prison sentence was unjust, making his tale even more painful.
Though battling childhood demons, bereft following the death of mentor Cus D’Amato and rebuilding after the shock loss to Buster Douglas, Tyson was close to his peak.
Dismissed by some as a flat-track bully, Iron Mike had just done 19 brilliant rounds with Donovan Razor Ruddock before the court case came to slash him down to size.
Tyson mkII was an even bigger attraction but even his 1996 WBC world title win over Frank Bruno could not save him.
Demons followed Tyson around, allowing more dedicated boxers like Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis to claim wins over him before he retired just shy of his 39th birthday as perhaps boxing’s biggest squandered talent.

At the dawn of 2005, Dr Ironfist was the WBC heavyweight champion of the world with only two defeats and a bright future.
But, after an agonising ACL knee injury scythed him down in a November sparring session and the lure of a political career pulled hard, the elder slugging sibling vacated his crown and took to democracy.
But, when the leg heeled and the knuckles itched, especially with baby bro Wladimir owning two other versions of the title, Vitali returned in October 2008 and regained his old crown in his first bout back.
In his four-year long second coming, Vlad added wins over Manuel Charr, Derek Chisora, Shannon Briggs and Chris Arreola to his record and quit, like old enemy Lennox, on top.

    Verdict: Hit
The Easton Assassin hated every minute of his one-sided whooping of his hero Muhammad Ali when they clashed in 1980, so he knew the dangerous of prolonging a boxing career.
Underrated Holmes first retired in November 1986, aged 37, after controversial back-to-back losses to Michael Spinks but by January ‘88 he was lured back for a big-money loss to Mike Tyson.
The slippers went back on until April 1991 when Holmes embarked on a brilliant comeback, suffering defeats only to Evander Holyfield, Oliver McCall and Brian Nielsen.
Though a 1999 fantasy fight with George Foreman fell through, Holmes slipped back into retirement with his fortune and his faculties banked.
The owner of perhaps the best jab in heavyweight history, Holmes needed more competition during his but still amassed a magnificent record.

Brazil’s finest fighter had no business being able to shake off ringrust and tot-up such a record after hitting the beach for such a lengthy break.
Unlike all the giants previously mentioned, bantams rely on their speed, reflexes and stamina and all of those would usually vanish as quickly as the money and  narrow waist, once a fighter retires.
But Jofre is one of history’s heaviest hitters and had no such problems.
When two decision losses to Fighting Harada, in his native Japan in 1965 and ‘66, cost 5ft 4in undisputed lineal king Jofre his titles, he jacked.
But three years later, reinvented as a featherweight, Jofre went on a second tear and  was crowned WBC and lineal champ in 1973 before retiring at the summit with a stunning 50 wins by KO.

    Verdict: Hit
The Gypsy King dethroned 10-year champion Wladimir Klitschko in his adopted German backyard in November 2015, realising a lifelong dream, and knew he was heading for oblivion.
A doping ban, drink and drug abuse, mental health problems and obesity consumed him over the next two years, until WBC champion Deontay Wilder pushed his luck just a lick too far by goading him into a comeback.
A whopping 10st was melted off his frame, with the help of young mastermind Ben Davison, just two tune-up fights were needed and Wilder was bamboozled, only clinging onto his belt thanks to generous draw.
So Fury went back to America and casually switched from feather-fisted stylist to ruthless KO machine, battering Wilder until all he had left were excuses and a trilogy rematch clause.

    SUGAR RAY LEONARD
    Welter to light-heavyweight
    Hiatus: Three years
    First Record: 35-1
    Second: 1-2-1
    Verdict: Miss
Moments after the underwhelming May 1984 win over Kevin Howard, after being floored for the first time in his career, one of boxing’s greatest talents retired.
The single loss to Roberto Duran had been avenged, Thomas Hearns had been stopped in the 1981 Fight of the Year and the fire in the undisputed welterweight icon’s belly had just dimmed too much to continue.
But when Marvellous Marvin Hagler wanted a dance partner for the Ring, WBC and lineal middleweight honours in April 1987, Leonard was back.
Over 15 legendary rounds, in one of the closest-to-call fights ever, Leonard got the nod that enraged Hagler so much he quit – with no comeback.
He had the audacity to pop up to light-heavyweight next – stuffing coins in his pocket to appear beefier at the weigh-in – and beat Danny Lalonde.
A rematch draw against Hearns was more than a gift and the 1997 KO loss to Hector Camacho – with Leonard aged 40, after a six-year lay-off – was thankfully the end of his genius.

Sometimes a little career-break or holiday can be just the tonic. But the Hebew Hammer really pushed the envelope with his retirement.
The New Yorker had a promising career in the late 1980s but by ‘91 he had suffered three consecutive defeats and retired honourably.
That was until September 2012 when the 50-year-old announced his return with a second-round stoppage in Florida.
The super-fit veteran suffered a KO loss the following year but he had broken enough records to retire a very proud man.

Jack Johnson should have been the most celebrated athlete of his era but his blackness was deemed unforgivable during the early 1900s.
After every dirty was pulled to prevent Johnson from claiming his rightful crown, he finally claimed his title in 1908, only for rich bigots to pay undefeated Jeffries to come out of retirement and be their Great White Hope.
Inside boxing’s first purpose built stadium, Jeffries and Johnson prepared for a 45-rounder but thankfully the champ needed only 15.
Jeffries, now a 35-year-old shadow of his old self, was whacked hard by an uppercut in the fourth and Johsnon knew his comeback was finished from there.

WBC champion Tyson Fury, 31, said he was offered £10million to take on his namesake but turned down the approach.
Naturally, Fury’s rival Joshua, 30, was asked how he would fair if he took on the reformed Baddest Man on The Planet.
He told Sky Sports: “I don’t want to say anything because I love Mike Tyson, he would land a few left hooks and body shots but we would go the distance.
“His age would show but we would be pushing and shoving, he is in my top-three.”

Tyson has shed six stone to trim down to fighting weight, as he makes his comeback on September 12 in California.
He initially had no plans on boxing again, when he was first approached to fight veteran 46-year-old Bob Sapp, a kickboxer, MMA fighter and actor.
But after coming around to the idea of lacing up the gloves again, he admits he is unsure on how legendary puncher Jones, 51, was even selected as his comeback opponent.

It marks Tyson’s first fight in 15 years, but Jones only retired in 2018.
The 51-year-old reckons should he survive and early Iron Mike onslaught, his famed boxing skills can see him outsmart the youngest heavyweight champion of all time.
Jones told TMZ Sports: “Not only does Mike look like a killer, Mike is a killer, but the whole thing people need to realise is, Mike is a killer, Mike not a cheetah.
“Mike’s got to go kill quick, if he don’t kill quick he got problems on his hands.

“If he can’t kill quick then he is fighting one of the smartest, savviest guys to ever do things, if he don’t kill quick then he’s in trouble.”
The heavyweight headliners are familiar foes.

After Jones – a former middleweight champion – made the unprecedented step up to heavyweight in 2003 to win the WBA belt, he insisted only a Tyson fight would keep him in the blue ribbon division.
But Andre Ward, who had the same manager as the four-weight king, claimed he actually declined a £33m offer to face Iron Mike.

Now, over a decade later, they are set to face off in a pay-per-view exhibition, expected to be fought in 12oz gloves but no headgear.

Anthony Joshua thought ‘f*** this’ and nearly quit over brutal training and warns boxing ‘ain’t about abs and six-packs’

ANTHONY JOSHUA almost walked away from boxing at the start of his career – because he could not hack the gruelling training sessions.
The current unified heavyweight champion first laced up the gloves as an 18-year-old after being invited down the the Finchley amateur club by his cousin.

Joshua won gold at the 2012 Olympic Games in London
Despite going on to become ABA and Olympic champion before turning pro in 2013, AJ nearly quit after exhausting days in the Team GB set up.
He revealed: “You know what kept me going in this boxing thing as well?
“I got so many stories. I was at GB Boxing, I used to train at Finchley maybe, what, three times a week, we used to train Monday, Wednesday, Friday.
“I used to think, ‘Yeah, that’s enough’. You know what I’m going to do, I’ll win the ABA’s, turn pro and all that malarkey, it was just a simple route.

“Then I learned about GB Boxing, and I was like, ‘What? There’s Olympic boxing? What’s all this about?’ Remember, I was only boxing amateur for three and a half years.
“So anyone I’ve coming through and I’ve trained four times in one day, they used to make me train four times a day.

“I was like you know what f*** this. I was ready to leave GB Boxing, this s*** aint for me.
“But what I realised is that as long as this s*** isn’t going to kill me, I can always come back tomorrow, right?

“So that’s what I said, I said I’m going for broke and I had that mentality and that’s where Stay Hungry came from. You gotta’ stay hungry, stay motivated.”
After winning gold at the London Games in 2012, it took Joshua just four more years to capture the world title, beating Charles Martin in two rounds.
The 6ft 6in 30-year-old recalled his journey from the place it all began, Finchley ABC, and insisted his mental strength outweighs his physicality.
Joshua said: “How many years on? 12 years on and we’re still here, no stopping.
“It ain’t about no abs, no six packs, none of that s***, whether you’ve got it or not it’s all about here (the mind), mate.
“I’ve seen the biggest and strongest men they can’t come in here they fold after three minutes.”

Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones Jr: Jones rejected £33m to fight Iron Mike in 2003, is 3 years younger and only retired in 2018

ROY JONES JR has proclaimed that he is ready to fight Mike Tyson if the pair can thrash out a mega comeback deal.
The retired boxers, both in their 50s, are tipped to fight on September 12 in an eight-round exhibition contest.

    3

While Jones Jr only retired in 2018 after dropping down to cruiserweight, Iron Mike last fought over 15 years ago.
That bowing out was a rather sad affair with the American throwing in the towel during a pretty even battle with Kevin McBride.
By contrast, Jones Jr finished off his career with a victory in his 75th contest, downing Scott Sigmon in his hometown of Pensacola, Florida.
But the prospect of a fight No76 against Tyson is rather tempting for the 51-year-old.

Jones Jr recently told sports.ru: “Yes, it’s true – Mike is a legend. It would be crazy to receive an offer to enter the ring with him and refuse.
“I had no intention of going back and fighting again but, for the sake of Mike Tyson, I agree to make an exception.
“For me, this is an opportunity that I cannot refuse. Of all those who wanted to go into the ring with him, he chose me.
“And since he did that, how can I say no?”

    FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
Jones Jr has three years on Tyson, as well as one inch in height and three in reach.
Since retiring, he has opened a fight school in Russia having received joint American-Russian citizenship in 2015.
Despite Captain Hook’s lengthier spell in the ring, neither man has fought at heavyweight for over 15 years.
Jones Jr beat John Ruiz in 2003 before losing two fights of a trilogy contest with Antonio Tarver.
That sent his career downhill and he would go on to defeats against Joe Calzaghe and Danny Green before settling into lower-tier cruiserweight fights.
Jones Jr even had the chance to fight Tyson back in his pomp, reportedly being offered £33million to do so in 2003.

While Iron Mike was far from the star he once was at that point, Junior felt he would still have the chance to face him later.
Former boxer Andre Ward told JRE Clips: “There was a Tyson fight on the table and I believe I’m accurate when I say that it was somewhere around $40million guaranteed.
“There was an upside too. You stay at heavyweight, keep the weight on, and Tyson wasn’t quite Tyson at that time.
“He was still dangerous but he wasn’t quite Tyson. I think they were working towards it. What I heard was Roy wanted more money.
“Roy somehow said, ‘No, the fight will be there down the road,’ and put his attention to Antonio Tarver, and the rest is history.
“I wanted to see him fight Tyson and ride off into the sunset. One more and you’re out.”

Comeback talk has surrounded Tyson of late and he is certainly not out of the public eye.
Having shut his personal messaging service due to overwhelming demand, the 54-year-old is facing off with a SHARK for a new TV series.
His next opponent is still very much up for debate with Evander Holyfield and Shannon Briggs also touted for the huge bout. More

In the video, the WBC heavyweight champion urged his supporters to never give up no matter what they’re battling, as John jokingly branded himself as a “fat b******”.
Speaking to his old man in the upload, Fury said: “Just finished a lovely one-hour cross country run dad, how you feeling?”
To which John replied by saying: “Yeah I’m feeling pretty good, fit, fit as a fiddle.”
Fury then commented: “It’s absolutely a blessing to be able to go running every day like this isn’t it?”

With dad John stating: “Yeah it definitely is, especially at my age, I’ve looked after myself, I’ve worked hard at it so I’m reaping the rewards now and look at me running with you son, It’s a privilege to be here.”
Fury then told his followers: “Everyone remember that, it doesn’t matter how old you are, how fat you are, how low you feel, we can always get up and keep moving forward.”
Illustrating his son’s point, John quipped: “And I’m a fat b******!”
Fury then finished off the video by saying: “We never give up and we keep battling on, no matter what gets in our way, we move forward. All the best have a good day.”

Despite doubts that Wilder is unwilling to face Fury in a third meeting between the pair, the Bronze Bomber’s manager Shelly Finkel has insisted the bout will go ahead in 2020.
And should Fury come out with another win against the American, he will turn his attention to Anthony Joshua, with the British rivals already agreeing a two-fight deal next year.
The duo even bumped into each other in Marbella a few days ago, with Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn revealing they spoke about their proposed mega-fight.
