Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones Jr: Predictions from pundits and former rivals who make fight picks as legends return

ROY JONES JR goes into his fight against Mike Tyson as an underdog – according to those in the boxing business.
The American – who started his career as a light-middleweight – is also the bookies outsider.

He faces fellow legend Tyson in an eight-round exhibition on Saturday, and has been left with it all to do inside the ring.
But Jones, 51, only retired in 2018, meaning what he lacks in size and power he could make up in with activity and form.
Here SunSport runs down the predictions from fighters, promoters and trainers.
    Mike Tyson
Iron Mike did not have too much to say on the fight – only warning it will be all-action.

The 54-year-old told TMZ Sports: “Pain, baby, pain. A lot of pain.”
    Prediction: Violence

Mike Tyson fights for the first time since retiring in 2005
    Evander Holyfield
Holyfield twice beat Tyson and wants to face him for a third time after announcing he is also coming out of retirement.
He is backing his old rival to beat Jones if he lands one of his trademark shots – but fears if he fails it will be a snooze fest.

Holyfield, 58, told Teddy Atlas: “I think if Tyson catch him, he gonna hurt him. But if Tyson can’t catch him, it’s gonna be a lousy fight.”
Prediction: Tyson… if he can land.

    Danny Williams
Williams scored one of the great British upsets in a boxing ring after he knocked out an out-of-sorts Iron Mike in 2004.
But he still tips Tyson’s size and power to be too much for Jones.
Williams, 47, said: “I think Roy is going to get seriously hurt. He is a natural middleweight.”
    Prediction: Tyson

    James ‘Buster’ Douglas
Buster Douglas became the first man to beat Tyson, with his 1990 upset still considered one of the greatest shocks in boxing history.
He came into the fight a 42/1 underdog – and he gives Jones even LESS chance of repeating his victory.
Douglas, 60, told DJ Vlad: “I think he has a chance but it’s a slim chance. Slimmer than Buster Douglas.”
    Prediction: Tyson

    Amir Khan
Khan revealed both were an inspiration to him in his career, but questioned why they are coming out of retirement.
Still the former champion – who jumped from welterweight to middleweight in 2016 before being KO’d by Canelo – is backing the smaller man.
Khan, 33, told Fight Hub: “I don’t know what’s made Mike and Roy fight each other. I mean, they might be friends, I don’t know.
“But who’s going to win this fight? Roy Jones, in my opinion.”
    Prediction: Jones

Amir Khan has predicted Tyson will lose against Jones
    Freddie Roach
Legendary trainer Roach cornered Tyson towards the end of the heavyweight’s career.
They still keep in touch now, and Roach has no doubt his friend will win by knockout.
He told told Press Box: “I think Mike knocks Roy Jones out.
“But I did warn Mike that he has to be careful of Roy’s left to the body. That’s the punch Roy used to knock out Virgil Hill.”
    Prediction: Tyson

    Tyron Woodley
Former UFC welterweight champion Woodley is another who has looked up to Tyson and Jones.
As a result, he feels Iron Mike’s power over the eight rounds will prove too troubling.
Woodley, 38, told Mike Swick: “I’ve studied them so much. I’ve watched so many films, so many fights with both of them.
“I think if Mike Tyson touches anybody, they’re going down no matter how old he is. I just don’t see him not touching Roy at some point in the fight.”
    Prediction: Tyson

Ex-UFC welterweight champion on Tyson’s podcast
    Jeff Mayweather
Floyd Mayweather’s uncle – a trainer – runs his own boxing channel, often asking for predictions ahead of big fights.
But in his own verdict, he tips Tyson to just edge out Jones.
Mayweather said: “Overall, if I would have to bet my money, I would pick Tyson because I know he has the power.
“And as big as he is, he has some tremendous hand speed.”
    Prediction: Tyson

Floyd Mayweather’s uncle Jeff with Tyson
    Oscar De La Hoya
De La Hoya works with Jones’ great rival Bernard Hopkins as they run Golden Boy Promotions.
And the American – who wants to make a comeback of his own – is tipping Tyson to come out on top.
De La Hoya, 47, said on Instagram: “I’m going to have to go with Tyson.
“But it wouldn’t surprise me if Jones Jr pulls something off – like he always has in his career.”
    Prediction: Tyson

    Jake Paul
The YouTuber faces ex-NBA star Nate Robinson on the undercard of Tyson’s comeback.
And he predicts Iron Mike will win the night’s main-event.
Paul, 23, told the Mayweather Boxing Channel: “I think uncle Mike’s going to take it home. But Roy Jones is looking dangerous too.
“I think [Tyson] is gonna stop him. Those punches look to vicious, I think round, fourth round he’s going to connect with one of those Mike Tyson’s uppercuts or hooks.”

Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones Jr rule changes: Knockouts ALLOWED, rounds, minutes, judges, how to win – exhibition explained

MIKE TYSON and Roy Jones Jr face off in an intriguing exhibition fight TONIGHT in Los Angeles.
But what are the rules for the boxing spectacle? Is a knockout allowed and how many minutes will the rounds be?

Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr do battle this weekend
What are the fight rules for Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones Jr?

With a combined age of 105, Tyson and Jones Jr do battle in Los Angeles on Saturday night.
They will fight over eight, two minute rounds, and will be wearing larger 12oz gloves.
The fighters will not be wearing headgear.
Men’s boxing bouts usually run over three minute rounds and both stars have expressed their dismay at the shorter rounds.

Jones Jr said: “I’m not happy at all.

“Like [Tyson] said, that’s for women. I kept fighting until the last minute, saying, ‘Why we fighting two-minute rounds?’ I don’t understand that. We’re not women. We’re two of the best to ever do it.
“Why we got to do two-minute rounds? Why? If something’s going to happen, it’s going to happen anyway … two minutes, three minutes, five minutes. Don’t really matter.
“So, for us, what difference does it make? Two minutes doesn’t do anything for him or for me. To be honest with you, it cheats the fans out of it.”

In addition, the California State Commission have said that if either boxer is cut or injured the fight will be stopped, though it remains to be seen if referee Ray Corona will choose to halt it.

Referee Ray Corona will be the man in the middle
The World Boxing Council have created the WBC Frontline Battle Belt to give to the winner, and have former WBC champs Christy Martin, Vinny Pazienza and Chad Dawson scoring the fight remotely should it go all eight rounds for the WBC to decide a victor.
    Is a knockout allowed?
Technically yes, although the legends have been urged NOT to go for a K.O.
The California State Commission have deemed it a bout for the greats to “exhibit” their boxing skills.
UFC boss Dana White was flabbergasted after hearing the rule, saying: “There’s no knockouts? They’re not allowed to knock each other out? How do you enforce that?
Both fighters have said they are gunning for a K.O on Saturday night, and it will come down to the referee’s discretion to step in if he sees fit.
The fight will not count on ether man’s record.

    What have they said?
Andy Foster, California State Commission executive director: “It’s an exhibition.
“They can exhibit their boxing skills, but I don’t want them using their best efforts to hurt each other.
“They’re going to spar hard, but they shouldn’t be going for a knockout. This isn’t a record-book type of fight. This is not world-championship boxing right now. It’s not what this is. People shouldn’t be getting knocked out.
“The public can see what kind of shape Roy and Mike are still in.

Mike Tyson’s incredible bodyweight workout routine
“I’m sure there are going to be times where it heats up. Ray’s [Corona, referee] job is going to be to put the ice back on without having to kill the whole thing. He’s that kind of referee. I feel that he’s going to be good at that, and he’s the right guy for this kind of a fight.”
Fight organisers Triller said in a statement: “We have nothing but the utmost respect for Andy and everyone at CSAC.
“For total clarity we are not implying that CSAC is picking a winner or scoring this, WBC is doing both. WBC is scoring under a 10-9, and a knockout will be a win under WBC’s scoring. The results will not be reflected on their fight record. We apologize for any confusion and look forward to a great night of fights Saturday night.
Jones Jr: “First of all, if you think you are going into the ring with Mike Tyson, the last guy [Corey Sanders] that did an ‘exhibition’ with Mike [in 2006] got dropped in the first round.
“If you don’t know that, then something is wrong with you. Who goes into the ring with the great, legendary Mike Tyson and thinks, ‘Oh, this is going to be an exhibition?’ 12-ounce gloves? No headgear? Really? This is an exhibition? Come on, man. Be for real’.”
When is Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones Jr?
The fight is set for Saturday, November 28.
The undercard is expected to start at 9pm ET which is 1am GMT and the main event will follow at around 4am – 5am GMT.
LA’s Staples Center plays host with no fans in attendance.
Who is on the Tyson vs Jones Jr undercard?
YouTube star Jake Paul leads the way on the four-fight card when he takes on ex-NBA star Nate Robinson.
Elsewhere Hasim Rahman Jr is off the card after he tested positive for Covid.
    Main card
Tyson vs Jones Jr (8 x 2min rounds, heavyweight exhibition)

Take a look below as SunSport venture back in time through some of Jones Jr’s greatest and lowest nights.
What is Roy Jones Jr’s boxing record?
Jones Jr finished his career with a boxing record of 66-9.
His record as an amateur was also impressive as he racked up 121 wins with just 13 losses.

Jones Jr won a silver medal at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, but his loss is regarded as one of the worst robberies in amateur boxing history.
The judges’ decision to award the victory to Park Si-Hun, the home fighter, was even investigated by the IOC, who controversially saw no wrongdoing.

How old is Roy Jones Jr and how tall is he?
Jones Jr was born on January 16, 1969, making him 51 years old.
The boxing icon was born in Pensacola, Floria, where he currently resides with his wife and three sons.

Jones Jr only retired at 49, however, in 2018 after a win over Scott Sigmon after a 29-year professional career.
‘Captain Hook’, as he’s known, is just 5ft 11inches, despite his ability to move up the weights, winning numerous world titles.

Jones beat Bernard Hopkins to win his first title at 160lbs in 1993.
He then went on to beat James Toney for the IBF super-middleweight world title a year later.
Jones stepped up yet again when he knocked Montell Griffin out in one round to win the WBC light heavyweight world title.
Jones unified the light-heavyweight division on multiple occasions before finally making the move to heavyweight, skipping cruiserweight altogether.
In 2003, Jones beat John Ruiz by unanimous decision to become the WBA heavyweight world champion.
Jones Jr holds the record for most wins in unified title bouts with 12.

Further losses against Tarver again, Glen Johnson and Joe Calzaghe followed.
Jones Jr was then knocked out by Danny Green, before suffering losses to Bernard Hopkins and Dennis Lebedev.
His final loss came against British fighter Enzo Maccarinelli, who knocked Jones Jr out in the fourth round of their clash in 2015. More

Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones Jr: How the two compare on tale of the tape ahead of huge showdown

MIKE TYSON is looking to put on a show in his return to the ring after first 15 years away when he faces Roy Jones Jr.
The Baddest Man on the Planet pits his wits against his American compatriot at the Staples Center in Los Angeles TONIGHT.

Tyson, 54, goes into the bout as the heavier man for the contest after coming in at 220.4lbs, while Jones Jr weighed in at 210lbs.
Incredibly, Iron Mike has weighed in LIGHTER than he did when he became the youngest-ever heavyweight champion in 1986, when he beat Trevor Berbick.
Both men are incredible shape for the fight, with Tyson revealing he has shed seven stone for his return.
Meanwhile Jones has shared a clip displaying his iconic hand speed as he looks to upset the odds.

A YouTuber decided to simulate the bout on Fight Night Champion, with Tyson knocking out his opponent in the ninth round.
But how do the fighters – who have a combined age of 105 – compare?
As well as being three years younger, Jones Jr is more experienced in the paid ranks having fought 17 more times than the Dynamite Kid.
In addition to that, he has recorded 16 more wins and three more knockout victories, though he has also lost on three more occasions.

Mike Tyson’s incredible bodyweight workout routine
And Jones Jr is the more active fighter having last entered the squared circle in 2018, while Tyson last competed in 2005 when he lost against Kevin McBride.
He also goes into the fight one inch taller than Tyson, while he boasts a bigger reach than the fearsome puncher.
But it is Tyson that is being backed to come out on top according to those in the boxing business.
Evander Holyfield said: “I think if Tyson catch him, he gonna hurt him. But if Tyson can’t catch him, it’s gonna be a lousy fight.”
Legendary trainer Freddie Roach added: “I think Mike knocks Roy Jones out.
“But I did warn Mike that he has to be careful of Roy’s left to the body. That’s the punch Roy used to knock out Virgil Hill.”
Meanwhile Oscar De La Hoya stated: “I’m going to have to go with Tyson.
“But it wouldn’t surprise me if Jones Jr pulls something off – like he always has in his career.”

Though Brit star Amir Khan has backed the former middleweight champion to come out on top.
He said: “I don’t know what’s made Mike and Roy fight each other. I mean, they might be friends, I don’t know.
“But who’s going to win this fight? Roy Jones, in my opinion.”

Meet Daniel Dubois, the quiet K.O assassin nicknamed Dynamite who comes from family of boxers including Olympic hopefuls

DANIEL DUBOIS is the quiet heavyweight nicknamed Dynamite who comes from a family of boxers including Olympic hopefuls.
Dubois faces Joe Joyce on Saturday in the biggest and toughest test in his 15-fight unbeaten career.

But the 23-year-old – who was born in Greenwhich – has dedicated his whole life to the sport, leading up to his shot at the European title.
He first joined the boxing gym aged nine as his dad Dave wanted him off the mean streets of South London.
Ever since, for him and his fighting siblings Caroline, Prince and Solomon, it has been a family affair.
Dubois spent the summer in lockdown with his two brothers and sister, as they trained in his new home in Hertfordshire.

And he revealed 19-year-old Caroline – who has hoping to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics next year – acted as the head trainer.
Dubois told SunSport: “Caroline takes the training sessions every day, she enjoys picking the exercises and circuits more than I do.
“She has our youngest brother Solomon acting like the teacher’s assistant so there is no slacking.”
Dubois has helped his little sister in her career ever since she first started boxing as a nine-year-old.

There, Caroline fought under the boy’s name Colin to ensure she could share the ring with the boys.
She said: “It feels a bit crazy looking back on it now, considering where I have got to, but back then ‘Colin’ seemed like the only way to start my dream.
“Boxing clubs in those days were not interested in girls so my dad and Daniel, after some convincing, let me come up with the plan.
“Me and Daniel just had to remember our lines every time we went in the gym.
“He denies it was his plan but he did a lot to help me get started. I had short hair and kept quiet, so it was OK.”
As Caroline waits to see if the Olympic Games will go ahead next year before deciding whether to turn pro, Daniel’s career is only heading in one direction.
He has been taken the distance just once, with his power proving too hot to handle.
Dubois made his debut in 2017 at 18, having had just seven senior amateur bouts, despite starring as a youth boxer in Team GB.

British heavyweight legend Frank Bruno pictured with Dubois Credit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
But he rejected the chance to contest for a spot in Tokyo to instead take his heavy-hands into the paid ranks.
His biggest win to date was a fifth round knockout against former sparring partner and amateur team-mate Nathan Gorman.
Since the win last year, the youngster has three more knockouts to his name.
But his most recent, against Ricardo Snijders in August, came a tune-up ahead of his headliner against Joyce on the weekend.
The pair – who also sparred in Team GB’s Sheffield HQ – were due to fight in April on pay-per-view.
But amid the coronavirus pandemic, it caused constant delay and even threatened to KO the clash entirely.
Until Dubois and 35-year-old Joyce agreed to fight behind-closed-doors and on normal TV, as they were given the credit they deserved and a new date.
The winner will emerge as the British, Commonwealth and European champion, and elevate themselves into world title contention.

Dubois is already the No2 ranked challenger in the WBO, behind Anthony Joshua’s mandatory Oleksandr Usyk.
And even though he remains tight-lipped, the punching prodigy is confident his fists will do the talking and put him in line to ‘take over’ the division.
Dubois told us: “It may not have come across but I am ferociously confident in my ability because of the work done in the gym.
“I was a boy among men when I sparred on the GB team, I am a baby in terms of experience now in the pro game but don’t mistake my quietness for self doubt.
“I’m not even that quiet or shy, you can’t afford to be when you are one of ten siblings and want to get fed.
“But when it comes to boxing my approach has been strictly business.
“Beating Nathan Gorman for the British title – in a fight a lot of people thought was going to be 50-50 – just confirmed what I already knew about my potential.
“And seeing older targets and potential opponents lose – in very good and hard fights – only makes me more confident I can take over soon.”

Iron Mike, 54, weighed in LIGHTER than he did for his world title win as a 20-year-old in 1986 and said he will ‘come running’ at rival Jones Jr, 51.
But thanks to Jones Jr’s dual Russian and American citizenship, whatever the outcome of tonight’s bout, the pair could stage a sensational rematch in the East.

Watch Tyson Fury wish himself happy anniversary for Klitschko win and laugh at taking belts then ‘throwing them in bin’

TYSON FURY has wished himself a happy anniversary to celebrate five years since he beat Wladimir Klitschko.
Fury claimed the WBA (super), IBF, WBO and IBO titles as he defeated Klitschko, who was 11 years unbeaten at the time, in Dusseldorf by unanimous decision in November 2015.

Fury celebrated the five-year anniversary of his defeat of Wladimir Klitschko on Instagram

Posting a video to his Instagram stories, the two-time heavyweight world champion shared a video commemorating his victory over the Ukrainian from the comfort of his sofa.
Fury said: “Happy anniversary to me.
“Five years since I battered Klitschko, the undefeated man for 11 years.
“And it took the old bald-headed Gypsy King to go to Germany and give him a good hiding.

“And take all of his belts and then chuck them all in the bin.
    “Very fitting really, wasn’t it?”
Never one to miss a chance to stir the pot, Fury added: “Me Dad said and ruin his life too, get up there you big Ukrainian dosser.”
In the aftermath of his fight with Klitschko, Fury struggled with depression and swelled to 150kg before failing a drug test and vacating his belts.

Fury beat Klitschko via unanimous decision in November 2015

He returned to the ring in 2018 before challenging Deontay Wilder for the WBC heavyweight title later that year.
After a draw in their first fight, the Gypsy King completed his comeback in February 2020 with a seventh-round TKO of Wilder in their rematch to become the WBC title-holder.
A potential trilogy fight with Wilder was scrapped last month following a dispute between the pair and Fury was instead set to fight Agit Kabayel in December, although that bout has also been axed.
Fury now looks set to target an undisputed clash with Anthony Joshua next year, which Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn has suggested could take place in May or June. More
