Anthony Joshua banks £10m purse with Kubrat Pulev landing just £3m… but Brit loses out on extra £8m in gate receipts

ANTHONY JOSHUA banked around £10million from his win over Kubrat Pulev… but missed out on an extra £8m in gate receipts.
AJ delivered a stunning ninth-round knockout to the Bulgarian to successfully defend his WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO titles at Wembley Arena on Saturday.

1,000 fans- including Floyd Mayweather – were in attendance to watch Joshua set up an all-British unification showdown with Tyson Fury.
And SunSport can reveal that there were no set purses for AJ’s fight with Pulev, but it is believed the Watford hero will have earned around £10m.
His European rival, who now has two defeats on his professional record, is expected to have banked in the region of £3m.
Pulev revealed earlier this year that he would donate half of the purse he received for facing Joshua to Covid-19 medical workers.

The pair were both in line for larger paydays when they were originally set to meet at the 62,303-seater Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in June.
That would have seen AJ pocket £8m just in ticket sales but the fight was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Joshua took home a staggering £50m for his win over Andy Ruiz Jr last December in Saudi Arabia – doubling his career earnings.
But his undisputed clash against Fury has already been revealed to be a 50-50 split.

Speaking after dispatching Pulev, Joshua confirmed that he has set his sights on stepping in the ring with the Gypsy King next year.
He said: “I started this game in 2013, gathered the belts.
“Whoever has the belts I want to compete with. If that is Tyson Fury, let it be Tyson Fury.”

Kubrat Pulev ‘quit’ and should have been stopped in third round against Anthony Joshua after turning back, claims Whyte

KUBRAT PULEV “quit” in the third round of his heavyweight showdown with Anthony Joshua.
That’s according to Joshua’s former rival Dillian Whyte, who was commentating on the contest for the BBC.

Kubrat Pulev turned his back to Anthony Joshua in the third round

A picture-perfect slip and straight-right counter from the unified heavyweight champion put the Bulgarian bruiser on wobbly legs.
‘AJ’ sensed blood and unleashed a hellacious flurry of shots to try and get the two-time world title challenger out of there.
Joshua put ‘The Cobra’ on the canvas with a brutal right uppercut, although the challenger rose to his feet to beat the referee’s ten count.

Before Pulev was felled by the imperious Joshua, the veteran turned his back and retreated into the corner – which prompted the ref to issue a standing ten count.

Many interpreted Pulev’s turning of his back to be a sign he wanted out of the contest – a notion Whyte agreed with.
‘The Body Snatcher said: “He quit. He ran into his corner. The referee should’ve stopped the fight there and then.”
Despite almost being finished in the third, the always-game Pulev continued to put up a stern fight.

The fight, however, was taken out of him in the ninth round when Joshua landed a succession of vicious uppercuts and was sent crashing to the mat.

Pulev, somehow, picked himself off the canvas and began marching towards the champion.
But Joshua closed the show with a beautiful one-two combination that rendered the durable and zombie-like Pulev unable to continue.
Although Joshua picked up his first stoppage victory in over two years, Whyte was far from impressed with his old foe’s performance.

Anthony Joshua put Kubrat Pulev down with a vicious right handCredit: AFP
He said: “He could have finished this earlier. Pulev was awkward but not dangerous.”
The Brixton banger added: “A strange performance. He could have made a major statement.
“He got the job done. He looks trapped between styles.”

Pulev was sent crashing to the canvas for the third time in the ninth round. He couldn’t get to his feet before the count and it was all over at 2mins 58secs.
The Bulgarian was floored twice in that round and once in the third, in which he was also given another standing count too.
Speaking after his KO triumph in front of 1,000 fans, Joshua, 31, said: “Boxing is about less talk and more action, I hope everyone was satisfied tonight.

“I stuck to what I know best, boxing, putting my shots together. It’s all about less talk more action.

“I don’t even want to really do an interview.”
Joshua was asked whether he ‘wants the Fury fight’, to which he responded: “Of course I want the challenge.
“I want all the belts, if that happens to be Tyson Fury, then let it be.”

Promoter Eddie Hearn added: “There has been a lot of talk, it is less talk and more action.
“We are going to be friendly, we are going to be nice. We are going to make the Fury fight straight away.
“He wants it, he is the best heavyweight in the world. It’s about legacy, and let’s get it done.”
Fury uploaded a video to Twitter just minutes after Joshua’s arm was raised.
Wearing a Christmas jumper, the 32-year-old Gypsy King said: “There you go everyone, Anthony Joshua just s**t himself on live television.
“He got asked if he wanted the fight, and he went around the bushes and put his arse in the hedge.
“I want the fight, I want the fight next, I will knock him out inside three rounds.
“He’s a big bum dosser, can’t wait to knock him out.”

Anthony Joshua smashed Kubrat Pulev to defend his world titles
Pulev was floored twice in the third round as Joshua unloaded some huge bombs watched on by Floyd Mayweather who had flown in for the fight.
At times the 39-year-old smiled his way through the torture, but it was stomach-churning at times as Joshua landed at will.
The gritty Bulgarian managed to make the bell, just, despite at one point turning his back on AJ as he was pummelled.
Credit to the Bulgarian as he refused to cave and even managed to get his jab going – until his night was done in devastating fashion.
Joshua peppered Pulev with uppercuts in the ninth, a huge right flooring the durable challenger.
With seconds left, Pulev managed to get to his feet to beat the count, but was soon sent crashing back down as AJ threw the kitchen sink at him.

AJ, who attended a Black Lives Matter march in June and worked on a SunSport campaign to highlight the BAME and immigrant heroes working in the NHS fighting pandemic, did not take a knee before his fight.
The champ confirmed on Thursday that he had made the tough decision not to take the stance but he is pushing for serious social change with grassroots charities.
Instead, the 31-year-old son of Nigerian parents used his entrance to remind the world of his Hollywood appeal.

Head-to-toe in white kit and gloves, The father of one had his initials ablaze just like at the brilliant Wembley Stadium night he beat Wladimir Klitschko in 2017.
Through a black and white video AJ addressed the 1000 fans asking for prayers but it did not look like he would need them when he stripped off to reveal 17st 2lbs of magnificent muscle.
Pulev, the 39-year-old Bulgarian hard man named after a medieval warrior, came to the ring in a red, green and white robe that honoured his national flag.
And the pair locked eyes for a thrilling instant once both inside the ring, moments before attempting to beat each other senseless they shared a final sense of respect.
That respect was shared at the final bell too as Joshua’s hand was raised.
The two boxers embraced and both shouted a war cry as the beef was settled in emphatic fashion. More

    ROUND 5
Joshua trying to get back on his jab but Pulev is still in this fight. It’s important AJ looks to set his shots up again, rather than rush in.
The Brit barely looks like he’s broken a sweat in there, Pulev much the opposite.
The longer this goes the more Pulev should feel the heat, but Joshua has slowed himself since that third round.
Joshua lands a nice right hand and tried to follow up with an uppercut that just grazes past him. AJ looks desperate to make a statement here tonight.
Pulev lands a nice right hand in the final 30 seconds of the fight.

    ROUND 4
Joshua begins the round with a smile on his face. He knows Pulev is there for the taking.
Pulev looks like he has recovered in there, somewhat, however.
Joshua still looks very assured in there but he didn’t land the massive blows he did during the third round of the fight.
No dramatics like the third there…

    ROUND 3
More feinting to begin the third round, Joshua looks very assured in there and more confident than he did in the Ruiz Jr rematch.
Pulev tries a clubbing right hand around the back but AJ dismisses it and comes forward with more jabs, before planting a nice right hand in the Bulgarian’s face.
Pulev attempts a left hook but misses and AJ goes to town with a huge attack!AJ lands a beautiful right hand and Pulev goes down before Joshua starts his attack again and floors the Bulgarian again!
    WOW!

    ROUND 3
    PULEV GOES DOWN!!!!!

    ROUND 2
Pulev pushing the pace, he’s the man coming forward while Joshua continues to pick his shots from the back foot.
He does land a nice combo but Pulev looks at AJ and smiles – he liked that one apparently.
AJ will grow in confidence as the rounds wear on, he continues to throw his jab out and gets into the body.
Pulev trying to pressure AJ with his presence but Joshua controlling the fight well from the outside.
Nice pair of jabs from AJ to close the round. 2-0 to the champ in London.

    ROUND 1
Both guys pretty tentative to kick things off as Joshua seeks some range in the middle of the ring.
Pulev throws his jab out there first but Joshua’s jab is an excellent one as well.
Both men switched on in the ring you can see, pair of them trying to find a way in on each other. Fans are in raucous voice at Wembley Arena for this one.
Joshua lands a nice jab in the last minute of the round but a very cagey opening from AJ and his opponent Pulev.
Round 1 to AJ… just? Pulev does land a nice left hook to close the round, however.

Lawrence Okolie record: Height, reach, weight, stance, pro record and amateur wins for Euro champion ahead of big fight

LAWRENCE OKOLIE is in action tonight on the Anthony Joshua vs Kubrat Pulev undercard.
The cruiserweight contender was supposed to fighting Krzysztof Głowacki for the WBO world title but the Polish fighter tested positive for coronavirus.

Lawrence Okolie will be hoping to fight for the WBO cruiserweight world title this weekendCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd

Okolie will still feature on the bill and promoter Eddie Hearn has explained it still be for the world title – against Nikodem Jezewski.
Regardless, The Sauce will feature for the first in a ring since October 2019, when he beat Yves Ngabu at the O2 Arena.
What is Lawrence Okolie’s boxing record?
As a professional boxer, Okolie’s record is 14-0 with 11 of those fights coming by stoppage.
Okolie biggest fight to date was against compatriot Issac Chamberlain in a battle dubbed ‘British Beef’, which 27-year-old won on points.

After beating Chamberlain for the WBA continental cruiserweight title, Okolie went on to win the Commonwealth and British straps against Luke Watkins and Matty Askin.
Okolie then picked up the European title in a brilliant seventh-round TKO of Ngabu last October, in his second fight with trainer Shane McGuigan.
Lawrence Okolie height, weight, reach and stance
The Sauce stands at a lofty 6ft 5in and at the weigh-in will be as heavy as 14st 3oz, or 200lbs.
Okolie has previously spoken about moving up to the heavyweight division, where his own manager Anthony Joshua is competing.

Joshua is the WBA, WBO and IBF champ in boxing’s blue riband division.
Okolie’s reach is just over 82 inches and he is ranked as the seventh best cruiserweight in the world by Ring Magazine.
Okolie is right-handed, therefore he fights out of the orthodox stance.
    Lawrence Okolie amateur career
Okolie won gold at the European Olympic qualifying competition in Turkey back in 2016.
He defeated France’s Paul Omba in the final, having beat Abdulkadir Abdullayev in the semis.
Okolie was then selected to compete for Great Britain at the Rio Olympics that very same year.

He won his opening fight against Igor Jakubowski before losing to stylish Cuban Erislandy Savon in the next round.
Okolie also fought in the World Series of Boxing for the British Lionearts and also lost to Savon, but this time by TKO.
He turned pro soon after, signing a deal with Hearn and Matchroom, before penning a management contract with Joshua and 258 Management. More

“It’s not bad. The pressure is off, you can get in your rhythm. And I think I need that sometimes. I am under a lot of pressure. I am physically good but mentally you have to stay strong.

“This year has been good to unload a lot of pressure and you have to take fighting in front of 1,000 fans as a positive.”
Pulev has said: “I have been watching his fights carefully. He has a good style, and he is a good specimen, but he has not shown any mental toughness.
“Yes, he has skills, but he hasn’t shown the mental strength.
“This is something from within, in the blood of a man, and he does not have it.” More

Gotzev thinks it’s a no-brainer as Pulev, 39, has already beaten the “better Fury” – cousin Hughie.
The veteran fighter beat Hughie in a 2018 IBF eliminator to land the Joshua bout in the first place.
And Gotzev told WorldBoxingNews: “Kubrat’s thinking, let them do all the planning. Then let me get that Tyson Fury fight.

“Because defeating AJ will create a great podium for a Tyson Fury showdown.
“He’s already beaten the younger Fury. Kubrat feels [he] is the better Fury.”
Speaking about the drawn-out talks to give the fight the go-ahead, Gotzev added: “The world needs a comeback fight.
“They need a spectacle, an epic battle, and something to take your mind off what is going around the world.

“So we’ll give the world the opportunity to see a fight by the rules, by two gladiators.”

Gotzev went on to criticise Joshua and promoter Eddie Hearn for refusing to budge on their demands to have the fight go ahead in England – with it taking place at the SSE Wembley Arena having originally been scheduled to be at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
He raged: “Croatia came in strong with a big offer… an excellent offer as a matter of fact, for us to take it to Pula.
“But from day one there was always hesitancy.
“I don’t think they ever wanted to be anywhere outside of [Joshua’s] home sweet home: The UK and London.
“I do believe that the champion, who I have a lot of respect for, has struggled due to the fact that he did not look very good on the road.”
