Joshua’s chances of beating Fury have been written off by many, with some claiming he won’t land on the fleet-footed Gypsy King.
But Ruiz Jr believes AJ can get the job done if he doesn’t box at distance as he did in their 2019 rematch.
Mexico’s first heavyweight champion told The Daily Mail: “Fury has a really weird style.
“I feel if Joshua doesn’t box around – like he did to me – and goes forward, throws his combinations, I think Anthony will pull out the victory.”
A date and venue for the biggest fight in the history of British boxing has yet to be finalised.
However, Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, recently revealed the long-awaited Battle of Britain is on course to take place in July.

During an appearance on The AK and Barak show, he said: “In July.
“The date depends on many different things. For one venue, it’s the backend of July, and for another venue, it’s the first week of July.
“There’s been a bit of talk about Wembley, which is difficult, but we got 100,000 capacity, which the government is working towards.
“Wembley is trying to initiate full capacity.
“So if we did have full capacity at the end of July, Wembley comes into the conversation.
“In AJ’s head, this comes down to as much money as possible, but for AJ, I’m not saying he’s looking for the right deal, but he just wants to fight.
“He wants this fight next more than anything.
“So if it’s 100,000 at Wembley, Anthony Joshua is 1 million percent signed and in for this fight.
“Obviously, we have to do our job and go around the world and present all the offers to the fighters, but Anthony Joshua has told me categorically that if it’s Wembley and full up, ‘I’m in.’

Meet Ricardo Mayorga, the volatile champ who smoked cigarettes, drunk beer in training and slapped opponent’s wife’s bum

RICARDO MAYORGA was the volatile world champion, who smoked cigarettes, drunk beer in training and even slapped Shane Mosley’s partner’s bum. Born in Masaya, Nicaragua, Mayorga was raised in poverty and a self-proclaimed gang leader.

The Nicaraguan was an avid smoker
Ricardo Mayorga pictured wielding a machette
Mayorga, to control his aggression, began boxing at a young age and attended military school in Managua.
But still, violence surrounded him, leading to several fights outside the ring.
Mayorga said before fighting Oscar De La Hoya in 2006: “It was neighbourhood versus neighbourhood.
“Basically 40 versus 40 fighting with lead pipes, machetes, rocks.”
Mayorga turned pro in 1993 and fought around South America until 2001, when he made his US debut.
Despite not talking English, the Spanish-speaking loudmouth was an immediate star, due to his confrontational persona and showboating style.
He would purposely fight with his hands down and chin in the air, to entice opponents to throw, leaving them open for the counter.
Mayorga first won gold in 2002, beating Andrew Lewis for the WBA welterweight title, all on a diet of cigarettes and booze.

A year later, he unified it with the WBC belt against Vernon Forrest – and celebrated by smoking in the ring during his post-fight interview.
Despite his unhealthy habits, Mayorga was famed for his fitness, capable of running miles at a time during training.
His coach, Stacey McKinley, gave up trying to straighten out his addictions, and instead cut a deal with Mayorga.
McKinley in 2015 explained to Tru School Sports, why he allowed his fighter to smoke and drink.
He said: “I could deal with the champ. He’s smoking cigarettes and drinking beer, OK, that’s fine, we going to make a deal though, champ.
“What’s the deal going to be? Monday through to Friday, you’re going to train, you ain’t going to smoke and you ain’t going to drink no beer.
“On Saturday’s, you can sit behind the camp, I’m going to get you a case of beer and pack of cigarettes and you can smoke all day.
“You’ve got to understand one thing, he was going to do it anyway. So it was my way of managing it, I had to manage it. You’ve got to be thinking outside the box.”

Mayorga in 2008 was asked by Wall Street Journal why he refused to give up smoking or drinking.
He replied: “That’s how I became world champion and I like it.”
Not only was Mayorga notorious for his lack of discipline and eccentric style, he was also public enemy No1 to any other fighter around him.
Most memorably he had a heated and bitter rivalry with De La Hoya leading up to their title fight.
Mayorga said of De La Hoya: “I wanna kill him. I wanna stop his heart with my right hand.”
The Nicaraguan then accused the Golden Boy of throwing a fight with Bernard Hopkins in 2004.
And he mocked De La Hoya, who represented America in the 1992 Olympics, for his Mexican heritage.

Mayorga said: “Tell your wife to screw you the morning of the fight, so you don’t take a dive, like you did against Hopkins, f****t.
“You can’t even represent your race, b***h. All the latinos are with me.”
De La Hoya hit back: “You disrespected the two things I love. First, you disrespected my wife, now you mentioned my race.
“This isn’t a game. I’m going to knock you out.”
True to De La Hoya’s word, Mayorga was beaten in six rounds, but evidently he was not humbled.
In his very next fight, he crossed paths with Fernando Vargas, and the two could not even go one press conference without brawling.
After Mayorga mentioned Vargas’ wife on stage, a punch up between the pair broke out.

Mayorga went on to win the fight, but it was not the last time he would land in hot water for attacking an opponent’s girlfriend.
In 2015, he agreed to a rematch with Shane Mosley, having already lost to the American in 2008.
Mosley put on the event alongside his girlfriend Trista Pisani, who hosted the press conference.
After Pisani bent over before the face off, Mayorga slapped her bum, causing another melee on stage.
Afterwards, Pisani offered Mayorga $10,000 to allow her to beat him up.
He responded: “How about for another $25,000, I get to slap her in the ass again.”
Controversy ensued later, as the WBC accused the incident of being staged, something Mosley denied.

But the former three-division champion did suggest Mayorga is not quite as crazy as he seems on camera.
Mosley, now 49, told Against The Ropes Podcast in 2020: “He talks c***p, that’s what he does.
“But he’s not really as bad as he is, but he does have a sharp tongue and a big mouth, especially if you can understand what he says.”
Mayorga’s rematch defeat to Mosley was his last noticeable fight to date, since boxing just four more times.
With three losses on the spin, the final in 2019 against Argentine Lester Martinez, Mayorga finally called it a day.
In his career, he faced greats such as Miguel Cotto and Felix Trinidad, as well as De La Hoya and Mosley, while dabbling with three MMA fights.
But his legacy will live long in the memory, and with a sport filled with mavericks and personas, still, no one came close to El Matador.

Ruiz Jr weighed in over a stone heavier for his second fight against AJ as he ballooned to over 20 stone.
That was to be his last bout with Manny Robles in his corner, as he linked up with Saul Alvarez’s trainer Eddy Reynoso last year.
And he is looking in great shape, with the Mexican-American already shedding over three stone for his comeback dust-up against Arreola.
Speaking during a virtual press conference, the Destroyer revealed he is taking competing more seriously now as he looks to become a two-time world champion.
He told Fight Hub TV: “Losing from my last fight against Anthony Joshua, it was devastating, because I did not do the things that I was supposed to do.
“I look back right now and I’m like ‘Damn, if I would’ve stayed dedicated, if I would’ve stayed disciplined and do the right things that I was supposed to do…’
“And that was the most important fight of my life… but now it’s totally different. Now I got my mind right, I got a great trainer, so we’re just ready for May 1.”
Before adding: “I’ve always been overweight and now that I’ve been dropping weight normally and in the right way by eating right, not just wearing the sauna suit, starving yourself.

“Because that’s what I used to do back in the day. But now that we’re eating the right things, we’re working on the right things, I feel amazing.
“I can do better stuff that I couldn’t do before because of my big gut, I had chi-chis, I had t**s that wouldn’t let me throw the right punches and all that.
“But now I’m more motivated, I’m more dedicated in this sport and sky’s the limit.”

And he looks almost completely unrecognisable after shedding the pounds in preparation for his career-defining bout.
Fury shared a photo of his trimmer physique to his recent Instagram story, in which he was modelling some of his Gypsy King clothing line.
And he looked a far cry from a man who claims to be necking 12 pints a day.
Earlier this month, the 32-year-old said: “I have stopped training at the moment, I am on holiday.
“I am drinking anything between eight, ten, 12 pints of lager a day, at the minute.
“But I am not eating so I am getting my calories through alcohol.
“I have trained and trained and trained with no progress so I am now a man of leisure.”

Fight fans couldn’t quite believe their eyes when the latest photo of Fury started doing the rounds on social media.
One tweeted: “He looks class the man means business.”
Another said: “Damn I never seen him this fit.”
And another said: “Wow, Tyson is looking good. His fist looks like a sledgehammer.”
One remarked: “Yes we know he has been lying about not being in training.

“He won’t be beaten. AJ might have to visit primary school again.”
Fury’s long-awaited showdown with Joshua is expected to take place in June or July.
The pair agreed terms on a two-fight deal last year but put pen to paper on their £500million contract earlier this month.
A venue and date for the Battle of Britain, however, have yet to be finalised.
And Fury’s dad, John, recently cast doubt over the biggest fight in the history of British boxing taking place this summer.

He told BT Sport: “We need to get him out, whether these cowboys get the job sorted which I don’t think they’re going to do.
“What have they signed? They’ve signed nothing in my eyes. They’ve got no date, no venue, no nothing.
“What does it mean if you can’t get a date and a venue?
“What does it mean if no one is willing to put the money up?
John Fury has doubts over his son fighting Anthony Joshua this year

“It’s all about someone coming forward and saying, ‘Right, I’ll pay for the fight, I’ll stage the fight.’ Where are these people?
“That’s the position it’s in and I don’t think they can get it together.
“It’s too big for what’s happening and the climate the world is in at the moment.
“I just don’t think the timing is right for a fight of that magnitude with the state of the world.”

Eddie Hearn urges Deontay Wilder to come ‘back in the ring’ for heavyweight ‘barnburner’ with Dillian Whyte

EDDIE HEARN has reiterated his desire for Deontay Wilder to face Dillian Whyte, urging the former WBC heavyweight champion to get ‘back in the ring.’The Bronze Bomber hasn’t set foot inside the squared circle since his emphatic dethroning at the hands of Tyson Fury last February.

Brixton banger Whyte was Wilder’s mandatory challenger for the WBC strap before the American’s seventh-round TKO defeat to The Gypsy King.
And following Whyte’s four-round demolition of Alexander Povetkin late last month, Hearn believes the match-up makes perfect sense.
During an appearance on the AK and Barak Show, he said: “Both Dillian Whyte and Deontay Wilder are not world champions, so there’s no actual standard as far as who should get what in terms of the purse.
“We need to see Deontay Wilder back in the ring. The HW division is a better one with him in it.
“Dillian Whyte can be matched with anyone. But Wilder-Whyte is a thrilling barnburner.”
Matchroom Boxing chief Hearn reckons a fight between the heavy-handed heavyweights would do big business on both sides of the pond.

He added: “Deontay Wilder is a huge name in America now after those two fights with Fury. He’s also a big name in the UK.
“I haven’t really thought about the split. I would just work with the money and say, ‘Guys, this is what I think is in the fight.
“We can work out a deal. Who knows? We need to see Deontay Wilder back in the ring.
“I want to see that, and I think he’s great for the sport.

“And I think the division would be a better place with him in it, so let’s see him get active.”
Should Wilder not be keen on the fight, Hearn would love to see The Bodysnatcher throw down with former unified champ Andy Ruiz Jr.
He continued: “Dillian has had such a long run of tough fights. I would like to see him come to the states in the summer and have a fight.
“Whether that’s Trevor Bryan or another American heavyweight to make a mark here.

“I think Deontay Wilder and I think the Andy Ruiz fight is tremendous as well for Dillian Whyte.
“Dillian Whyte is one of those guys that you can match him against anyone and he’s always exciting.
“He’s never been in a dull fight, and I just feel that Wilder-Whyte is a barnburner, I really do.

It’s rare that athletes so entrenched in other sports opt try their hand at something new, let alone a combat sport.

She said: “Everyone back in Sweden knew me as the girl who played table tennis.
“It is (quite a leap to go from table tennis to boxing), but I’ve been an athlete my whole life so that athlete lifestyle is what I love.”
Sandstrom made her pro debut last year against Jessica Cashman and endured the bitter taste of defeat courtesy of a unanimous decision loss.
Defeat in her maiden outing, however, didn’t prompt the 29-year-old to throw in the towel.

Matchroom boxing chief Eddie Hearn, however, recently claimed the fight could take place in the ‘first week’ or the ‘backend’ of July.
That could end up being a cause for concern as McGregor’s trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier is currently targeted for the same month.
The third instalment of McGregor vs Poirier is set to headline UFC 264 on July 10.
The good news for Hearn, however, is the former featherweight rivals’ series decider has yet to be finalised.
Staging the biggest fight in the history of British boxing in the same month as Poirier vs McGregor III could end up having a detrimental effect on pay-per-view buys for both fights.
Fight fans in the USA will likely have to pay $89.95 – the price of the much-maligned Mayweather vs McGregor PPV in 2017 – to watch Joshua vs Fury and a further $69.99 to view UFC 264.

Those in the UK will have to stump up a minimum of £40 to watch both fights, that is if Joshua vs Fury isn’t priced more than the usual £19.95.
But Hearn is confident Joshua and Fury’s long-overdue meeting will indeed take place in July.
During an appearance on The AK and Barak show, he said: “In July.

Despite the delay in finalising the bout – which was agreed last June – Joshua and Fury are both hard at work in the gym.
