Ben Askren branded a ‘fat slob’ after Jake Paul loss by Stephen A Smith, who says former UFC star should be ‘ashamed’

BEN ASKREN went into his showdown with Jake Paul looking like a ‘fat slob’, according to ESPN’s Stephen A Smith. The former UFC welterweight was wiped out in the first round of his Triller Fight Club boxing match with the YouTuber last Sunday, with a beautiful one-two combination putting him down.

Askren, 36, tipped the scales at 191lbs for his lucrative cash with the social media star, which earned him a guaranteed £500,000.
But Smith was far from impressed by the condition of the Olympic wrestler, saying on First Take: “Ben Askren should be ashamed of himself.
“He walked in there looking like a fat slob – I’m serious.
“He looked liked somebody’s grandparent. I mean it was pathetic. It really, really was.
“To know that he is a professional fighter – see I don’t hold that against heavyweights.
“If you’re a heavyweight or a heavyweight in the UFC and stuff like that, I get all of that.

“But there is no excuse, there was no excuse, for Ben Askren to walk in the ring looking like that.”
Smith also far from impressed by Askren’s approach for the much-maligned fight.
He continued: “Did you see how he was holding up his hands? It was like a fighter from the 1940s.
“I didn’t know if I was watching him or Jake Lamotta or Joe Louis.
“I’m like, ‘What the hell is this? This is unbelievable.’ I couldn’t believe how he looked.”
Jake Paul is cutting no corners with his diet

The often hyper-critical Smith wasn’t impressed by Paul’s brutal stoppage on account of Askren’s striking prowess.
And he’s urged the 24-year-old to start pursuing fights with legitimate boxers.
He said: “Here’s the reality of the situation: you’re going into the ring against non-boxers.
“At some point in time, you’ve got to go in there against somebody who at least has an amateur record.
“I mean somebody that’s trying to be a pro.”
Former Bellator and ONE Championship 170lb king Askren felt humiliated by his ill-fated professional boxing debut, saying: “I got knocked out by Jake Paul – it’s f***ing embarrassing.”

Joshua, 32, officially began his training camp for The Gypsy King earlier this month.
And he’d like to get the input of The Money Man and Dr Steelhammer before the blockbuster bout.
During an appearance on Pep Talk UK, Joshua said of Mayweather: “He’s a great man.
“To have someone like that with the boxing brain – you need to be around fighters as a boxer.
“Footballers need to be around footballers, boxers need to be around boxers.
“Lions stay around lions, lions don’t hang around with sheep, do they?

“Good boxers need to stay around better boxers in order to get better, so I’d definitely have him.
“I’d have George Foreman, Evander Holyfield, Roberto Duran, Tommy Hearns, Sugar Ray Leonard. Mayweather, 100 per cent.
“And Wladimir Klitschko, he’s always welcome.
“And it’s inspiration for the kids in this gym as well because this gym is an amateur gym for the community, so yeah it’d be good to have them down here.
    “Mayweather’s more than welcome.”

Saudi Arabia is expected to land the first of two multi-million-pound showdowns between Joshua and Fury.
July 24 is the expected date for the desert dust-up, although early August has also been mooted.
But AJ is still holding on to the faint hope of a Wembley clash with the WBC heavyweight champ.
During an appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show, he said: “I’ve signed my side of the deal.
“We’ve sent him a good offer, one I’m sure he won’t refuse.

“He wants the fight, no doubt about it. So do I and more than me and him, the whole public want it.
“I put my crystal ball out there and I say it’s going to happen this year 100 per cent.
“I’m pretty sure it’ll be this year. End of July, early August.
“Where? That’s what’s the delay, because of this pandemic. We want to have people coming to the venue.
“It’s just finding the right location. For me, Wembley would be ideal.”

Mike Tyson was desperate to fight Michael Jordan at a dinner party, revealed boxing star’s former manager

MIKE TYSON once threatened to beat up Michael Jordan over their romantic history with the same woman, the boxer’s former manager has claimed. The former Baddest Man on the Planet, 54,  made his comeback against Roy Jones Jr last November.
Mike Tyson (right) was arguably at his peak when sidling up to Michael Jordan (left)
But before that comeback, Rory Holloway has revealed what happened when Tyson and he attended a birthday dinner for Chicago Bears star Richard Dent in 1988.
Plenty of famous faces were at the December bash, including Jordan, boxing promoter Don King and Bears coach Mike Ditka.
Tyson was in his pomp with an undefeated record and unified title to his name –  it was a point in his life when he was also known for decadent and lavish partying.
But it was Jordan’s history with Robin Givens, Tyson’s ex-wife who the NBA legend had previously dated, that brought about the tension.
Holloway wrote in his book chronicling the boxer’s career, via BoxingScene: “Mike Tyson’s sitting there with his drink of choice, a Long Island Tea, and when he drinks his real feelings come out.
“I’m telling the server to water his drinks down because I see where this is going.
Jordan, it’s obvious he just wants to get up and run. He wants no part of this.
“Mike stares across the table at Michael Jordan. He says, ‘Hey man, you think I’m stupid? I know you f***** with my b****’.
“Jordan looks like he just seen a ghost. ‘I know you messed with her,’ Mike says, ‘You can tell me’.
“Jordan, it’s obvious he just wants to get up and run. He wants no part of this. Mike turns to Ditka. ‘Man, you think somebody scared of you, all that racist s*** you been talking?’.
“He says to Dent, ‘Y’all scared of this damn white man, Richard? He ain’t nobody. You gonna let him talk that way?’.

“It was a circus, for real, that night. Don King trying to change the subject. Me and John trying to hold Mike down.
“Mike telling everyone he’s going to bust Jordan’s ass. Jordan’s dressed sharp as always and he can’t get out of there fast enough.”
Differing reports of the night have been bandied around over the years and Jordan, recently subject to the hit ESPN series focusing on his departure from Chicago, is said to have declined to ever comment on his run-in with the boxing champ.

Anthony Joshua faces fighting Tyson Fury without beloved coach Rob McCracken who he compares to Sir Alex Ferguson

ANTHONY JOSHUA may be without his long-time trainer Rob McCracken for his undisputed title fight against Tyson Fury later this year. The Team GB coach guided the 31-year-old to the Olympic gold medal at London 2012, before AJ became a two-time world champion under his tutelage.
Rob McCracken may not be by Anthony Joshua’s side for his bout against Tyson FuryCredit: PA:Press Association
Speaking last year, Joshua compared his beloved mentor to Manchester United’s legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
He told Sky Sports: “Rob is a gaffer – I look at him like Sir Alex Ferguson. Great manager, great trainer, great experience.”
Before adding: “Me and Rob conquered the international stage as amateurs. Then I turned pro and me and Rob conquered the world.”
But in a blow for the WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight champ, the 52-year-old may not be beside him for his bout against Fury in the summer.
A July 24 date is what both parties are aiming for, but the fight could creep into August, with Saudi Arabia an option to host the event.
That clashes directly with the delayed 2020 Olympics in Tokyo where McCracken is scheduled to lead Team GB.
And Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn has commented on McCracken being potentially double booked.
He said: “There are too many people and things to fit around already with the fighters, trainers, countries, time zones, the Olympics.

“The guys know it will be around the Olympics, it could be inappropriate but it is the biggest fight in boxing and the biggest moment in AJ’s career so we have to work it out.
“I know Rob takes his Team GB position very seriously, he loves the job and the kids so it’s not ideal but we can’t move it a couple of weeks either side.

Paul, 24, secured his third professional boxing win when he savagely KO’d Askren in the first minute of round one on Saturday night.
And the younger Fury, 21, immediately challenged the YouTuber to a scrap on Saturday night.
In reference to a showdown with Fury, he tweeted: “I’m ready to give the people what they want.”
Soon after, Paul accepted the fight on the condition Tyson fights Michael Hunter on the same card.
And although the Gypsy King ignored the Hunter offer, he did have some friendly words for Paul after his third pro win.
Asked for his thoughts on Paul, he said: “Absolutely fantastic for the game.
“These YouTube guys coming to professional boxing brings more eyes to our sport.
“The kids and more people are watching from different ages because of these guys. So it’s very, very positive for our sport.”

The Paul/Tommy feud began when WBC champ Tyson implored Paul to take on his younger brother.
Speaking to ES News, Paul responded to Love Island star Tommy and laid down his demands.
He said: “I’m going to plant the seed now.
“Tommy Fury vs me and Michael Hunter against Tyson Fury on the same night.
“Tommy is weak… and Tommy’s girlfriend [Molly-Mae Hague] DM’d me before they went on that reality show.”

Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury could make ring walks at SAME TIME to avoid contract row in £500m undisputed fight

ANTHONY JOSHUA and Tyson Fury could make their incredible ring walks simultaneously to avoid a contract row and make a stunning undisputed spectacle.Traditionally the challenger walks to the ring first, with the champion following with a longer and more extravagant version.
Fury and Joshua are waiting for a date and location to be confirmed for their undisputed clashCredit: AFP
That means the challenger’s entrance cheers are forgotten and his pre-fight warm-up is wasted, as he is forced to wait awkwardly in the ring.
But promoter Eddie Hearn does not expect the detail to scupper the £200million Saudi showdown between two reigning heavyweight champions.
And he has a stunning plan in the mix that would have both British icons walk to the ring at the same time, from opposite sides of the indoor venue.
When asked what the plan was, Hearn said: “You will see. Maybe they will walk at the same time.
“It would be unique. From different sides of the arena. That would solve a problem.
“In the world today, people are more willing to be accepting and understanding and rather than muck about with it, let’s just get this done. So I don’t think we will have any problems.
“The walk in at the same time is genuinely something I have thought about as a spectacle rather than a contractual issue.”
Fight fans have been concerned by comments from Fury and his father John that the talks were stalling and deadlines to confirm the deal had passed.

But Hearn – who only promotes WBA, IBF and WBO champ Joshua directly – visited the undefeated 6ft 9in ace in Vegas last week, after both fighters agreed on an offer, and got good vibes from the big man.
“I ran round there and we just had 10 minutes in his suite but it was good to hear how dialled in he is for the fight,” the Matchroom boss said.
“When I saw the comments from him and his dad, I wanted reassurance that, when I deliver it, they will want it.
“I have spoken to Fury’s team and told them to hang in there, because I will get it done.
“Once they saw the offer, they felt a bit of positivity and believe the fight is happening and it makes for a better relationship.
“I think they are happy now because everyone has got what they wanted.”
July 24 is the pencilled date Hearn and his team are working around but he admits that might creep into August.
That clashes directly with the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympics where Joshua’s mentor Rob McCracken is scheduled to lead Team GB and hopefully unearth the next British boxing superstar.
And Hearn admits AJ Boxing have tough calls to make as the man Joshua describes as the Alex Ferguson of his team could well be double booked.
He added: “There are too many people and things to fit around already with the fighters, trainers, countries, time zones, the Olympics.
“There is all this stuff so whatever date we are given by the site is the date that we will go with.
“I know AJ and Rob have been talking accordingly so I am sure they will work it out.
