Inside Tyson Fury’s chaotic training camp for Deontay Wilder trilogy from newborn’s intensive care battle to Covid cases

TYSON FURY is just hours away from stepping into battle for a third time against Deontay Wilder. And the Gypsy King’s journey to the trilogy blockbuster has been far from plain sailing.
Tyson Fury is hours away from his trilogy fight against Deontay Wilder – but the build-up has not been straightforwardCredit: Rex
Fury is the bookies favourite to make a successful defence of his WBC heavyweight title against the man he sensationally ripped the belt from.
In February 2020 the Morecambe mauler battered Wilder into a seventh-round stoppage – exacting revenge for the first-fight draw that many believed Fury should have won.
And so the two will go at it for a third time in Las Vegas.
Rival promoter Eddie Hearn, still smarting after his man Anthony Joshua lost all his belts to Oleksandr Usyk, believes Fury is ‘not ready’ for the fight.
And the 33-year-old’s preparation has indeed hasn’t been as smooth as it could have been.
Here, SunSport runs through just some of the issues that have played a part in Fury’s fight camp.

    Contracting coronavirus
Fury tested positive for coronavirus in July that put paid to the trilogy taking place that month.
A new date of October 9 was agreed – but Wilder seems to think Team Fury ‘lied’ about the Gypsy King getting the virus.
He told the PBC Podcast: “They’re trying to run away from it, I’m running to it. I don’t believe he had Covid.”

But Fury blasted the American, and says he contracted Covid-19 TWICE and was left feeling ‘weak’ and ‘terrible’.
He said: “I’ve had Covid twice. I had it once back in like 2020 and once a couple of months ago.
“The first time was a lot harder because I lost my sense of smell and taste, and I felt weak and I felt terrible. The second time, I didn’t feel that terrible.”
    Bedside vigil for newborn
Tyson and Paris’ sixth child Athena was rushed straight to ICU after birth on August 8.
The worried parents were by their daughter’s side around the clock as she was treated in intensive care.
And to the Gypsy King’s delight, Athena was discharged and finally able to come home.

The boxing champion kept his fans updated on Athena’s progress throughout the worrying time on social media.
But the ordeal took its toll on the WBC heavyweight champion, who will return to the boxing ring for the first time in 20 months on October 9.
Speaking to ITV, he said: “[It] probably took a couple of years off my life, the amount of stress I was under.”

    Separating from Steward
Fury linked up with the legendary SugarHill Steward before he battered Wilder in 2020.
But his training with the American has not ran as smoothly as he might have hoped.
Fury credits SugarHill Steward for his rise back to the top of the sportCredit: Instagram
Fury has been with SugarHill Steward – but might not have done the amount of boxing training he hoped for
The BBC reports that Steward was only able to join him two weeks before he was due to return to the States.
And it adds that ‘Fury’s camp has been severely disrupted in the build-up.
    Chaotic press conference
The first press conference featuring the pair in June was a strange one – Fury tried his best to provoke Wilder but the American had the perfect way to keep out the noise.
The deposed champ sat there for the duration with his headphones on – even keeping them glued to his ears when the pair went face-to-face.
But the final presser ahead of the scrap was very different. Fury bounded around the stage with the microphone, while Wilder sat down and gave it back.

Chaos ensued when presenter Kate Abdo appeared to signal for the traditional ‘head-to-head’ – but Fury’s promoter Bob Arum went ballistic and called it off.
He says by doing so he ‘saved the fight’ – and then he proceeded to deliver a foul-mouthed tirade towards the 40-year-old British TV presenter.
ESPN’s Mike Coppinger was also given both barrels by Arum, the 89-year-old telling him to ‘shut the f*** up, p***k’.

Tyson Fury vs Deontay Wilder 3: UK start time, TV channel, live stream and predictions for the HUGE trilogy fight

TYSON FURY’S massive heavyweight trilogy showdown with Deontay Wilder is just over 24 hours away. The Gypsy King exchanged some choice words with Wilder during Wednesday’s press conference, where the Bronze Bomber doubled down on his cheating allegations against Fury.

Fury wanted to know why Wilder’s head trainer Jay Deas wasn’t fired after their second fight, but assistant coach Mark Breland was.
It was Deas who was in the room watching Fury’s gloves being taped up pre-fight and assumingly saw no wrongdoing.
But Wilder claims the Brit’s gloves were tampered with.
The two rivals barked at each other on stage to end the news conference, leaving fans salivating for Friday’s weigh-in and Saturday’s fight.
Should Fury win, he’s likely set to face the winner of Dillian Whyte and Otto Wallin, who will face off for the former’s WBC interim title on October 30.
The winner of that would then likely go on to face the victor from Anthony Joshua vs Oleksandr Usyk 2.
Las Vegas awaits Fury and Wilder first, though, with 20,000 fans expected to pack out the T-Mobile Arena on the city’s famous strip.
Fury will be hoping for more of the same from their second bout, where he decimated Wilder across seven brutal rounds 20 months ago.
Wilder’s biggest success against Fury came in their first fight almost three years ago, when the American dropped his foe twice en route to a split decision draw.
Since their second fight, Wilder sacked Breland for quitting against his will and has been spouting excuses for the past year.
The 35-year-old has claimed he was tired due to his heavy ring-walk costume, while Breland was accused of spiking his water.
For as much as it was a devastating defeat for Wilder it was a statement by Fury which had the whole world talking up a potential heavyweight unification bout against Joshua.
But with the coronavirus pandemic putting boxing and the rest of the world on hold negotiations came to halt.
And when talks started on a £200m mega-fight in Saudi Arabia this summer, Wilder had his rematch clause for a third fight reinstated after it expired during Covid.
Arbitrator Daniel Weinstein ordered Fury to fight the Alabama Slammer for a third fight or face paying up $80m.
And Wilder says he is confident of reclaiming his belt and knocking out Fury after having 18 months to train for the clash.
He said: “I see me beating him up and then knocking him out. As many things that I visualize in the first fight along with the second.
“I didn’t execute the game plan but this time around it’s just a different feeling, you know, all the way around. Just all the surroundings around me.
“The atmosphere. You know what I’m saying just the energy as a whole. I’m looking forward to putting on a great performance come October the 9th.
While Fury has admitted he has been under a sex ban during his fight camp and says he is going to knock Wilder ‘the f*** out’.”
It might not have been the fight most British fans wanted to see but with so much on the line this fight will be one for the ages no matter the outcome.

(Odds via Betfair at the time of publication)
    How the fighters compare
It’s pretty fair to say that Fury and Wilder are two completely different fighters.
In years gone by, Wilder has been known for his one-punch knockout power, his ferocious finishes and the mighty torque he gets into his right hands.
He’s often been criticised for his lack of traditional boxing technique, having picked up the sport late in his life, before managing to secure himself an Olympic bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
But Wilder has rarely ever needed boxing technique to get through his fights, boasting an incredible 41 knockouts from his 44 fights.
Fury, on the other hand, has been boxing since he was a child, and is known for his excellent footwork, feinting, double-jabbing and ring IQ.
He outwitted the great Wladimir Klitschko in their world title clash back in 2015 and outboxed Wilder for long periods of their first fight in 2018, though it ended in a draw.
Fury does pack a heavy punch, however, as he showed in his rematch with Wilder, but it’s his boxing which allows him to set up the offensive side of his game.
    What have they said?
Speaking at the pre-fight press conference on Wednesday, Fury said: “All these fights are exactly the same to me. I’ve got some guy trying to take my head off with punches.
“It don’t matter if it’s Deontay Wilder, or whoever it may be. It doesn’t really matter to me, because it’s the Tyson Fury road show.
I absolutely obliterated him in the rematch. He didn’t even win any of the rounds.
“In this third fight, I just see much more of the same.
“I hope you’ve got your excuse book ready, dosser!”
But Wilder fired back that he didn’t regret his cheating allegations towards Fury.
“I don’t regret it and I go to my grave believing in what I believe in,” said Wilder.
“I know things for fact. I have confirmation, clarity of a lot of things.
“Many people can believe what they want. We’re all human. We believe what we want.
    “But the eyes don’t lie.
“It only made me better as a man, as a fighter, to understand and see certain things. To know things for facts.
“It made me even hungrier than before.”
Where is Fury vs Wilder 3 taking place?
Fury vs Wilder 3 will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, making it the third different venue in pair’s three fights.
Fury vs Wilder 1 took place at Staples Center in Los Angeles back in December 2018.
And while their second happened in Las Vegas, the MGM Grand Garden Arena was the venue.
But now the T-Mobile Arena, which has hosted huge fights such as Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor, Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin and numerous big UFC events, will play host for their third clash.
    Who is training Tyson Fury?
Tyson Fury will be trained, once again, by SugarHill Steward, who took his corner for the second Wilder fight.
Fury used to be trained by Ben Davison, who was in charge for the very first Wilder bout, but was replaced by Steward a year later.
Steward instantly implemented his ‘Kronk style’ of training, one in which where boxers who fight out of the Kronk Gym in Detroit, Michigan, seek to put pressure on their opponents to force a knockout.
The style of fighting was first introduced by legendary trainer Emanuel Steward, SugarHill’s late uncle.
Fury predicted that with SugarHill in his corner, he would bring the fight to Wilder and take him out during their second fight, a prediction not many believed in.
But the Gypsy King did just that, stopping Wilder in seven rounds. And now, with 18 months more Kronk training under his belt, Fury will be looking for the same result on October 9.
    Who is training Deontay Wilder?
Wilder has brought in a new head trainer in Malik Scott, who the Bronze Bomber fought and knocked out back in 2014.
Scott and Wilder have worked all summer in attempt to sharpen the latter’s boxing skills, quickening both his feet and hands in preparation for Fury.
Wilder will still have ex-head trainer Jay Deas in his corner, but Scott will take charge on fight night.

The Alabama native used to have former world champion Mark Breland in his corner, but he was sacked after Wilder accused him of spiking his water before the second Fury fight.
It was also Breland who threw the towel in, forcing the referee to stop the fight midway through the seventh round.
What happened during Fury vs Wilder 1?
Fury’s first fight with Wilder took place in Los Angeles, California on December 1, 2018, several months after the Gypsy King’s two comeback bouts with Sefer Seferi and Francesco Pianeta.
Wilder was the favourite heading into the fight, having knocked out every opponent he’d ever faced before Fury, who had spent two years out of the ring with drug addiction and mental health problems.
But the fight ended in a controversial split decision draw after both fighters enjoyed success throughout the contest.
Fury managed to outbox Wilder for most of the fight but was knocked down in the ninth and 12th rounds.
The Brit looked to have been knocked out cold by Wilder in the final rounds before getting up and beating the count in a manner that saw him compared with The Undertaker.
The fight was scored 115-111 for Wilder, 114-112 for Fury and 113-113.
What happened during Fury vs Wilder 2?
Fury vs Wilder 2 took place in Las Vegas on February 20, 2020 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
The second fight turned out to be a more one-sided affair, with Fury shocking the boxing world to stop Wilder in the seventh round of their Las Vegas clash.
Fury came into the fight with a new trainer in SugarHill Steward, after utilising Ben Davison in his corner for the first bout.
Steward and Fury adopted an offensive game plan and came forward at Wilder throughout the fight, knocking him down in rounds three and five.
Wilder’s assistant trainer Mark Breland eventually threw in the towel at the midway point of the seventh round, making Fury the WBC and Ring Magazine heavyweight champion.
The Bronze Bomber would go on to make a slew of excuses for the loss, but one of them he later denied was that he suffered a burst eardrum.
The Covid-19 pandemic delayed several attempts to get a trilogy rematch finalised.
But this weekend, Wilder will finally get his chance at vengeance. More

But Joshua, 31, will have the chance to exact revenge on the undefeated Ukrainian next year after activating his rematch clause.
And promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed a heartbroken AJ is ‘obessesed’ with becoming three-time heavyweight champ of the world.
He told the BBC: “Anthony Joshua is hurting like crazy at losing his world heavyweight belts to Oleksandr Usyk, but I have never seen him this hungry and more determined to win the rematch.
“Actually, obsessed is a better word because since that fight, he has spoken about it, what he needs to do and what he needs to change, in every conversation I’ve had with him.”
Matchroom Boxing chief Hearn believes AJ and his team utilised the wrong gameplan for their Tottenham tussle with the former cruiserweight king.
He added: “I’ve seen many comments on how the tactics were wrong – and they were – but it’s difficult to not appreciate the things Usyk did.

“AJ was frustrated because he knows he can do so much better and boxed the wrong fight, but Usyk’s performance was exceptional.
“But, going back to the [Andy] Ruiz loss, that was different as it was just such a shock, nobody knew what to say.
“Here, you could see AJ’s mind working overtime on how he can beat Usyk. It was like the preparation for the rematch began then.”
Hearn is hoping to stage Usyk vs Joshua 2 early next year, although a solid plan is not yet in place.
He said: “We will formally announce the rematch in due course and start planning with K2 Promotions – March or April is sensible for the rematch.”
I have never seen him this hungry and more determined to win the rematch.Eddie Hearn on Anthony Joshua
Joshua is confident of exacting revenge on his fellow London 2012 Olympian, saying: “I’ve watched the fight, analysed my preparations and identified my mistakes.
“I’ve learnt my lesson. Don’t worry about me. My spirit is strong!”
Immediately after the fight, Joshua said: “If you look at it from a negative point of view, you’re never going to have that mindset that you can make a difference because you’re down anyway.
“But if you look at it from a positive point of view, and realise, ‘Yeah, I took a loss.
“‘But that’s a lesson, that’s a blessing. I can use it as fuel to get better.

“‘And use it as fuel to right my wrongs. You can only get better from there.
“So I’m not gonna hold myself down from the mistake I made, I’m only gonna uplift myself and say, ‘Actually, you know what? That was a tough fight.
“‘But from that fight, I’m gonna go away, get my notepad out and find ways to improve.”

TV presenter Kate Abdo has hit back at boxing promoter Bob Arum after he aimed a foul-mouthed tirade at her.The 89-year-old American was seething at what he believed was Abdo ‘favouring’ Deontay Wilder in a press conference with Tyson Fury.

He then claimed to have ‘saved the fight’ by stepping in to stop the two heavyweight boxers having a face off – which Abdo appeared to introduce.
Now Abdo has had her say in a length post she shared on Instagram.
The 40-year-old Mancunian wrote: “‘With regards to the faceoff – I was doing what we the broadcaster believed was agreed upon. But I think that’s kind of unimportant now.
“I have nothing but respect for Bob Arum and the empire he has created. I understand what he means to boxing and what this sport owes him.

According to Arum in his rant after the press conference, both Fox Sports and Abdo knew a face-off was never going to be part of the press conference.
And he claimed Abdo was out of order for bringing it up.
Arum even shouted out from the crowd “Not a good idea!” when Abdo raised the prospect.
However she then quickly changed her mind – suggesting it was Arum’s intervention which prevented the face-off happening.

That annoyed the promoter, who said: “They bring this woman in from the UK and she’s slanting all the press conference to Wilder.
“Like I don’t give a damn, but it’s obvious what she was doing!
“And then, she knew that the understanding was: no face-off. Tom Brown argued with Fox, no face-off.
“We said, “No face-off”. What does she say? “Now we’re going to do a face-off?”
“F*** her and f*** them. There was no face-off and we saved the fight.”

And despite smashing Wilder to pieces the last time they met in February 2020, the Gypsy King has been urged to focus on the challenge in front of him.
British boxing’s hopes of an undisputed title clash between Fury and Anthony Joshua went up in smoke when the latter was easily outpointed by Oleksandr Usyk on September 25.
Now Warren wants his man to put that £200million disappointment behind him and get the job done against a determined Wilder in Las Vegas.
Writing for Boxing Scene, the Hall of Fame promoter said: “Tyson cannot afford to allow himself to become distracted by the derailment of the Joshua gravy train and take his eye off the job in hand against an extremely motivated Deontay Wilder.
“I can’t see Wilder being able to reinvent himself enough to trouble Tyson, but there will be no complacency in our corner.”
Should Fury do what the bookies think he will and beat Wilder for a second time, there are some tasty-looking title defences on the horizon.

Fellow Brits Joe Joyce and Daniel Dubois have moved themselves into title contention, and of course there is the undisputed clash against former cruiserweight king Usyk.
But Warren remains confident that Fury can continue to reign supreme in the heavyweight division.
He added: “As I admired his performance and believe him to be a great fighter, I don’t see Usyk being a match for Tyson either.
“The attributes Usyk possesses are shared by Tyson with interest, along with a size and speed advantage.
“A fight between them is a natural one to make as we will now consider an alternative way forward, all things being well on October 9.”

Joshua, meanwhile, has told his team to thrash out terms for the rematch against Usyk.
He will be hoping for revenge just like he achieved when he avenged his shock loss to Andr Ruiz Jr.
And Warren is hoping AJ can get back to the big time and has refused to rule out the Fury clash ever happening.
He added: “As for Joshua, I very much hope he can punch his way back into the picture and we get to deliver the all-British fights involving Tyson, Joe [Joyce] and Daniel [Dubois] while they are still ripe for the making.”

Fury exposed Wilder as a crude banger and an easy target to hit last time… expect him to pick up where he left off

TYSON FURY is expected to start where he left off and batter Deontay Wilder to another humiliating defeat — even if the American enters the ring stark naked.Wilder was stopped in the seventh round after his trainer, Mark Breland, threw in the towel — a merciful gesture that got him the sack — when they last met 20 months ago.

Fury demolished Wilder in their rematch last FebruaryCredit: Getty
The Bronze Bomber lost not only his WBC world heavyweight title, but also his unbeaten record and his credibility.
His ludicrous excuse that his crushing loss was because he tired himself out under the 40lb weight of his bizarre Star Wars ring-walk costume belongs in the ‘dog ate my homework’ category.
The simple truth is Fury exposed Wilder for what he was — an unskilled, crude banger who was an easy target to hit.
Tyson was on fire and still fuming at being robbed when their first clash was considered a highly dubious draw 14 months before.
At last, after two frustrating postponements, they come face to face in what could turn out to be a thrilling and titanic Trilogy in Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena.
If it’s as good as the two most famous heavyweight trilogies between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier and Evander Holyfield v Riddick Bowe, fans who pay £24.95 to see it on TV in the early hours of Sunday won’t be able to claim they didn’t get value for money.

If the Gypsy King can emphatically demolish Wilder as he did before, it could end Deontay’s career.
But hanging in the air  is the thought that perhaps Wilder under new trainer Malik Scott — his one-time sparring partner — has managed to iron out many of his boxing imperfections so he can gain sweet revenge.
Remarkably, Fury and Anthony Joshua between them  dominated the heavyweight division for six years.
How Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder stack up ahead of the trilogy fight
That is until Joshua’s abject failure against Oleksandr Usyk when he waved goodbye to the WBA, IBF and WBO belts, which may have killed off the £200million fight with Fury at Wembley  forever.
Joshua seemed to have completely lost his  fighting spirit and like my local petrol pumps, his tactical ideas were running on empty.
And the way Joshua was laughing, joking and fist-pumping with his fans as he strode to his downfall made me think he was more suited to star  at The London Palladium than Madison Square Garden.
Fury enjoys a bit of fun in the build-up to his fights but when it comes to working hours he’s all serious business.

Tyson Fury’s promoter brutally dismisses Dillian Whyte’s chances vs Otto Wallin after he is made mandatory challenger

TYSON FURY’S promoter Bob Arum does not believe Dillian Whyte will beat Otto Wallin to set up a fight with the WBC heavyweight champion.Providing Fury beats Wilder this weekend and Whyte, 33, comes through Swede Wallin on October 30, the two Brits will be ordered to face one another for the WBC title.

The only way Fury would be able to evade Whyte in that scenario is if he could make an undisputed clash with Oleksandr Usyk.
However, Usyk is contracted to a rematch with Anthony Joshua, meaning a clash with Fury is almost certainly off the table.
This leaves Fury and Whyte on a collision course providing they can both come through their respective opponents.
But Arum believes Whyte will lose to Wallin and suffer the same fate as last year when he was the WBC mandatory challenger, only to go on and lose to Alexander Povetkin.
Speaking to iFL TV, Arum said: “Last time he [Whyte] was mandatory, he fought Povetkin and got knocked on his ass.
“I look for Wallin to clearly beat Whyte, so I’m not even taking it into consideration.”

Whyte has lost two fights in his professional career, to Povetkin in 2020 and Anthony Joshua in 2015.
The Body Snatcher avenged his loss to Povetkin with a fourth round knockout earlier this year, but is yet to get his own back on AJ.
He has exchanged words with Fury for some time and last month told SunSport he believes the two-time world heavyweight champion to be a ‘conman’.
Whyte said: “For God’s sake, don’t get carried away listening to a single thing that conman [Fury] says. His best attribute as a boxer is just getting the public to believe any of his bull****.

“I am the easiest boxer in the world to make a fight with. You call me or my people, offer us the venue, date and purse and we say yes or no. But Fury and his team talk rubbish.
“They have no interest in ever fighting me, he has been mandated to fight me twice and ducked out of it — the same as he did with the Wladimir Klitschko rematch he swerved.
“No one wants to see this third Wilder fight. British fans can’t fly over there, it’s going to be on at 5am, so he’s using my name to try to mug fans off again into buying into his b*******. More

But along with the epic fight which promises to take place, a fight in Vegas also brings with it a certain glamour that you don’t get anywhere else.
That can be seen in many different ways, none more so than in the two ring girls who will be working the fight.

Stephanie Ann Cook is a model from Rockford, Illinois that currently resides in Vegas.
She first entered modelling in 2007 and has since gone on to work on a number of combat sports events.
She became a ring girl for MMA shows around 2009 and then went on to be used frequently to promote Bob Arum’s Top Rank boxing events.
When asked who her favourite boxer was in 2012, she told Pro Boxing Fans: “Of course I love the legend, Muhammad Ali. He was so inspirational and still brings motivation to my life, that he is a favourite. So my favourite fight is Ali vs Foreman.”

When asked to sum herself up, she added: “I’m a very friendly, optimistic, big hearted dreamer! I’ll do my best to keep growing and living life to the fullest.”
    Tianna Tuamoheloa
Tiana Tuamoheloa is also one of the models working on Fury-Wilder III this weekend in Las Vegas.
The Samoan thoroughly enjoys travelling and being a part of ESPN’s boxing shows, but very few get as big as this weekend.
And in an interview back in 2018, Tuamoheloa opened up when asked some very personal questions.
When quizzed by Maxim if she has any sex fantasies, she said: “I love performing, so why not have a private, burlesque type of performance for my man? I’d think that’s something I think we’d both enjoy.”
She was also asked how a man catches her attention, to which she responded: “With swag. I enjoy looking at a man who knows how to pair an outfit together and takes risks with his style. I love a man with a confident demeanor.”
