Boxing icon Tyson Fury doesn’t even want to be nominated.
And there has been outrage that Sir Lewis Hamilton was left off the shortlist altogether.
Here SunSport reporters give their opinion on who should win and why out of the BBC’s shortlist of Tom Daley, Sarah Storey, Raheem Sterling, Adam Peaty, Emma Raducanu and Tyson Fury.

    EMMA RADUCANU
There is only one winner, as far as I am concerned. When I watched Emma Raducanu at Wimbledon, I thought I could see a top 20 player in the making.
I could never have imagined she would be a Grand Slam winner within a couple of months. Her victory at Flushing Meadows was magnificent.
Now she will shoulder the burden of carrying British tennis for a decade.
But there is something about her that makes me confident she will handle it.
And even if she cannot, nobody will ever be able to take away her achievement in New York.

LISTEN, we all know Emma Raducanu is nailed on for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award — and so she absolutely should be.
But after a shortlist (with an emphasis on the ‘short’) which failed to include Britain’s greatest ever sportsman Sir Lewis Hamilton, after arguably his most impressive year, are the Beeb actively trying to sink their own flagship?
We can talk until the cows come home about how the SPOTY show is not what it used to be, given the BBC’s dwindling sports portfolio.
And we can bang on about whether the word ‘personality’ should even be included, when personality has rarely been a factor.
We can argue that it’s a programme watched by your Nanna, rather than genuine sports fans. Or that it always was a messy apples-and-oranges comparison business.
And, yes, nobody seems able to get anything right any more.
Yet the idea of crowning the nation’s sportsperson of the year remains a worthy one.

WHAT better way to put the final nail in the coffin of the BBC’s poxy SPOTY award than awarding it to a bloke who threatened to sue the Beeb for even nominating him.
WBC heavyweight king Tyson Fury is at war with Auntie after Gary Lineker stitched him up on stage at the 2015 version and does not want to use his huge global appeal to help publicise the corporation in any way.
So hopefully the boxing superstar runs away with the voting, snubs his red carpet invite and leaves some poor sap to stumble up on the stage and accept the award without it even being on his behalf!

What Emma Raducanu accomplished in September — winning the US Open on her debut aged 18 and as a qualifier — was truly astonishing.
Arguably it was the most incredible British sports story of the 21st Century.
I’d be gobsmacked if she doesn’t win the BBC SPOTY Award on Sunday. She is the most deserving winner in my opinion.
I’m surprised cycling’s golden couple, Jason and Laura Kenny, were left off the shortlist but I’d expect fellow Team GB gold medallists Tom Daley and Adam Peaty to receive plenty of backing in the public vote.

AS much as I’d love to see Tyson Fury win purely for the chaos that would follow, it has to be Emma Raducanu.
The other candidates have been responsible for some of the most outstanding sporting moments of the year…she produced one of a lifetime.

For a British female to win a Grand Slam tournament is massive – for a qualifier to do so without even dropping a set is something that may never be done again.

Tom Daley deserves respect for finally getting the gold after so many years, while Adam Peaty is supreme in his sport.
But due to the magnitude and manner of the win, Raducanu has to get the nod.
    NEIL CUSTIS
    EMMA RADUCANU
Raducanu was not just the sports story of the year but one of the greatest ever.
When the pressure got to her in the fourth round of Wimbledon last June we thought we were seeing another plucky Brit trier whose 15 minutes of fame was done.
Just a few months later she went from qualifying to lifting the US Open trophy without losing a set.
She also gave us one of the great women’s grand slam finals in beating fellow teen Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 6-3.
To think just 12 months earlier she had still been hitting the ball against the wall of her house.
She had a wonderful back story too coming from a working class background.
An only child of a Romanian father and Chinese mother both of whom made sure she achieved academically as well as in sport.
She spoke in fluent mandarin and then Romanian in addressing her supporters around the world post-US Open.
And then she showed off a perfect golf swing we began to wonder if there was anything she couldn’t do.
The best thing of all is that in every interview she has done the 19-year-old, who still mixes with the mates she grew up with, comes across as so down to earth.
Not easy in the tennis world.

    EMMA RADUCANU
Forget about Sports Personality of the Year, try Sports Personality of the Decade.
What Emma did has never and will never happen again in many of our lifetimes, and for that she should be recognised.
Ending a 44-year wait for a British women’s Grand Slam singles champion, as a qualifier, is what dreams are made of not just in tennis, but sport as a whole.
Add to that she was just 18 at the time, with a personality and media presence way beyond those years, this has to be Raducanu’s title at SPOTY.
    Nothing else comes close.

Deontay Wilder tipped to face Andy Ruiz in blockbuster Mexico City fight a week after teasing retirement

DEONTAY WILDER has been tipped to take part in a ‘wonderful’ showdown with Andy Ruiz Jr in Mexico City.A clash with the former unified heavyweight champion is understood to be on the table for the Bronze Bomber following his brutal 11th-round KO defeat to Tyson Fury in October.

And WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman believes the fight would be the perfect bout to mark the return of big-time boxing to The City of Palaces.
He said: “[That fight] would be wonderful, and it is consistent with what the plans are for Mexico City [to secure big boxing events].
“We have been looking to return a great event to our capital.
“There have always been great fights [in Mexico City], but we have had many years without having a great event in Mexico City and yes indeed, Andy Ruiz, [a fight against Wilder] would be wonderful.
“The Wilder-Ruiz fight is perhaps the most interesting non-title fight right now [at heavyweight].
“Wilder is an explosive boxer, Andy Ruiz is a Mexican fighter, having achieved one of the great upsets in the history of heavyweight boxing and the great traction he has with Mexican fans is great, I would love to see him here in Mexico.”

Mexico’s first heavyweight champion Ruiz Jr is champing at the bit to share the ring with the former WBC king, recently telling Brian Custer: “I think that would be an amazing fight, me against Deontay Wilder.
“We’re both a part of the same team you know. I wouldn’t mind getting into the ring with him. I feel like I can beat him. We gotta get it on.”
Wilder, 36, is still processing his devastating defeat in his trilogy fight with Fury and recently admitted he could hang up his gloves.
He told comedian Kevin Hart: “It’s mixed feelings because ultimately I have accomplished all my goals in this sport. I told my daughter when she was one that I’d be a champion and I’d be able to support her beyond her belief.
“I’ve done that. There’s a lot of things that I’ve accomplished that I feel I have to prove to anyone because I’ve already proven [myself].
“Should I push forward? Should I give it a go one more time?
“Or should I just retire and focus on the other things that I already have, other things that I want to get into?”

Jared ‘Big Baby’ Anderson is the next world heavyweight champion as legendary Bob Arum plots course for the top

REMEMBER the name Jared ‘Big Baby’ Anderson.Because in a couple of years it’s likely it will be on the lips of every boxing fan lauding him as the new world heavyweight champion.

Anderson, unknown on this side of the Atlantic, is America’s latest exciting prodigy.
Making his debut at Madison Square Garden he demolished Ukrainian Oleksandr Teslenko inside two rounds last Saturday.
The hard-to-please New Yorkers couldn’t fail to be impressed as Anderson, a handsome, beautifully proportioned 6ft 4in, 17st 22-year-old with a lethal right-hand punch, won his 11th pro fight to maintain his 100 per cent knockout record.
It must be said — just like Mike Tyson’s early victims 36 years ago — jolting Jared’s opponents have been carefully hand-picked to make him look special.
But there’s a very good reason why we should be taking this baby from Toledo, Ohio seriously.
He has the formidable weight of promoter Bob Arum’s vast knowledge and experience backing him to the hilt.

Arum, who turned 90 last week, has a track record second to none when it comes to turning young raw talent into elite world champions.
Sitting in Bob’s Las Vegas office 25 years ago, he told me he had just signed a kid called Floyd Mayweather Jr, who was going to be as good as Sugar Ray Leonard. He was almost right.
Apart from Leonard and Mayweather, Arum’s star-studded cast list included Marvin Hagler, Roberto Duran, Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya, Alexis Arguello and George Foreman.
He also promoted 27 of Muhammad Ali’s fights.
Arum sees a great future for Anderson and he certainly hasn’t been as enthusiastic about a young prospect for years.
Bob said: “Jared is a good size heavyweight and I loved watching him spar with Tyson Fury in Vegas a couple of months ago.
“If you get a guy who is a heavyweight, who starts young and wins the heavyweight championship, then you not only have a superstar but a hugely bankable athlete.
“He’s a fun kid. He’s got a nice smile, he’s intelligent and he’s not full of himself. He just has a limitless future. I’m really high on the kid.”
For reasons that are difficult to understand, boxing promoters, unlike impresarios in other branches of sport and entertainment, have been a much-maligned breed.
Arum, a Harvard law graduate, has been responsible for creating multi-millionaires out of penniless novices.
He started at the top by staging Ali’s third world title defence against George Chuvalo, in March 1966.
Remarkably, in the following 55 years he’s put on 677 world title battles, masterminded 2,120 shows in 220 US cities in 42 of the 50 States and the Arum brand has been seen in 92 foreign locations.
He certainly has no intention of retiring, saying: “If God gives me the ability to live long enough to stay around ten more years, I will continue to promote fights.”

Amusingly, for all his achievements and longevity, Bob will be remembered for his ten-word answer when giving evidence in court.
Under cross-examination, the prosecuting attorney said: “Mr Arum, you are saying the opposite of what you said yesterday.”
Bob, unfazed and without turning a hair, replied: “Yesterday I was lying, today I am telling the truth.” More

‘If AJ packs it in, we’re all f***ed’ – Chisora warns fans to get behind Joshua in Usyk rematch for sake of boxing

DEREK CHISORA has urged the entire UK to get behind Anthony Joshua to save British boxing from the doldrums. The 37-year-old slugger has been a mentor to AJ, 32, since their days at Finchley ABC together and Chisora tried to advise his protege on how best to face Oleksandr Usyk in September.

The veteran nicknamed War gave the southpaw some tough early rounds before losing a decision, 11 months before his mate lost his WBA, IBF and WBO titles to the Ukraine ace on a punishing night in Tottenham.
But he expects the London 2012 legend to bounce back – with a new training regime and coach expected to be confirmed in the new year – to wrestle back his titles.
Ahead of Saturday night’s rematch with Joseph Parker, Del Boy said: “AJ has the rematch and he will win it, we are not looking at anything else apart from that.
“If AJ retires today, he packs it in and goes, boxing is f*****. Boxing journalists, magazines, YouTube channels are all f***** – even I am f*****. Eddie especially is f*****.
“AJ has lifted the whole sport up, changed it all and got us all paid much more, so we need to back him to get the win.
“When AJ and Tyson Fury retire who the f*** are all you guys going to write about? So while he is in the game we all need to get behind him.

“Seven years ago everyone was bored to s*** of the Klitschkos or even Matt Skelton, in the UK, it was f****** bulls***.
“So everyone better enjoy AJ and what he brings to the sport now.”
It felt like everyone outside AJ’s corner knew the 6ft 6in powerhouse had to impose himself on the former undisputed cruiserweight king when they clashed in North London.
But a questionable gameplan and some woeful encouragement between rounds from AJ’s assistant trainers, culminated in the Watford ace losing a unanimous decision.
But Chisora insists the golden boy has taken the loss like a man and has not needed advice on how to handle defeat.
He said: “AJ is dealing with it very well. He knows what he has to do and what he has to change and he is doing that now.
“He is a man, a grown man and he is dealing with it that way. I don’t have to talk to him.
“I saw him straight after the Usyk fight and I told him to just come back and be better than ever and he will do.” More

Anthony Joshua to leave Rob McCracken’s gym for Oleksandr Usyk rematch as Eddie Hearn says Brit needs to be ‘roughed up’

But SunSport does not expect the coaching mastermind to follow AJ away from the English Institute of Sport, where he is a hero to all the amateur prospects.
The 2012 Olympic legend visited a handful of American gyms and trainers after the punishing September loss and promoter Eddie Hearn expects a new regime to be implemented for the New Year.
Ahead of Derek Chisora vs Joseph Parker 2, Hearn said: “Rob’s in Sheffield and that’s his base.
“I feel it might be time to move on from that environment because when you’ve been there since you were 18 and you go into GB and Anthony Joshua is everywhere, he’s a god.
“I just feel it’s time to rough him up a little bit, not in log cabins in the middle of nowhere. But up there it’s ‘oh my God, it’s AJ!’ because they’re proud of him.
“Rob is not necessarily gone. That’s a conversation for those guys and it’s very difficult because is more than just a trainer, he’s a mentor to him, an advisor, a friend.

“He’s talking to people and I think he will make a decision early in the new year.”
Hearn, 42, has just arrived back from a business trip in Dubai where he spent time with the 34-year-old Ukraine southpaw who dethroned our ace in Tottenham.
And the meeting has helped nail down a predicted month for the rematch, with the mega-money Middle East making offers but Hearn preferring a shot at redemption in the UK.
“I would rather AJ got the opportunity to put it right in the UKEddie Hearn
He said: “I’ve just done a couple of rounds of site visits and you’ve got to talk to people.
“I like it in the UK. Spurs was great, whether it’s there or Wembley.
“I would rather AJ got the opportunity to put it right in the UK frankly.

Fury, 33, is renting a sprawling spot in the USA and has extended an invite to his old foe Wilder.
Florida borders Wilder’s home state of Alabama and the Gypsy King hopes the 36-year-old makes the short journey over.
He told the Mail: “It’s a huge place with an enormous swimming pool.
“Room for all and I’ve told Deontay we’re right handy for Disney World.”
The pair contested an epic trilogy bout – culminating in Fury’s second victory in October.
The fights were bitterly contested with many vicious words exchanged but the fighters have put their beef behind them since.

Tyson would need to have a big house in order to host the Fury and Wilder clans together.
He and wife Paris have six kids while Wilder and fiancee Telli Swift have EIGHT.
Any chat between the two would likely revolve around their three epic fights which Fury reckons may shorten the men’s lives.
The Brit added: “This will take years off our lives. We will feel the effects of this in our later days.”
Wilder recently suggested he may retire soon.
Speaking to Kevin Hart on the Cold As Balls on the Laugh Out Loud Network, Wilder said: “It’s mixed feelings because ultimately I have accomplished all my goals in this sport.
    ‘SHOULD I JUST RETIRE?’
“I told my daughter when she was one that I’d be a champion and I’d be able to support her beyond her belief.
“I’ve done that. There’s a lot of things that I’ve accomplished that I feel I have to prove to anyone because I’ve already proven (myself).
“Should I push forward? Should I give it a go one more time?
“Or should I just retire and focus on the other things that I already have, other things that I want to get into?”
Wilder knocked Fury down in the first and third fights but he got up to fight on.
But Fury was not concerned by his opponent’s famous punch power.
He added: “I fear only God.
“Never worried about fighting any man. And I always expect every heavyweight to carry a massive punch.

“So no. But I was aware that here was a champion with the special capacity to switch off any human with just one hit.
    “Some boxers have fantastic chins.
“But my powers of recovery are unique. Deontay’s not the first to put me down. But like the others he’s found out that I always get up. Always.”

DEREK CHISORA stunned promoter Eddie Hearn with the silent treatment ahead of his rematch with Joseph Parker. The 37-year-old fans’ favourite taped his mouth shut with the words ‘Eddie Hearn pay me to talk’ at the Stroller Hall in Manchester.

Hearn asked him “how much” but when Chisora ignored him the red-faced Matchroom boss had to turn to Parker to speak instead.
The madcap heavyweight walked into the room with his own giant speaker blaring out Purple Rain by Prince.
And the king of pre-fight antics then ignored rival promoter David Higgins’ handshake in favour of flicking him a middle finger.
Then, instead of talking to the press, Chisora played Queen song Bohemian Rhapsody and sheepish Hearn briefly sang along.
Hearn let his undercard fighters address the audience first, with silent Chisora’s mouth hidden by a branded covid-19 mask.
But after all the support stars had spoken, Hearn tried to get Del Boy to help sell the show but he kept hilariously schtum and unveiled the prank.

Chisora, now nicknamed War, has plenty of form for fight-week madness, ranging from Halloween body paint for the Oleksandr Usyk clash and hurling a table at bitter nemesis Dillian Whyte.
Chisora has spat water at Vitali Klitschko and planted a kiss on the lips of fuming Carl Baker in 2010.
Most of Chisora’s craziest stunts have appeared to boost last-minute PPV sales on Sky Sports.
But the veteran ace is now boxing on streaming app DAZN so appears to have toned down his efforts unless Hearn stumps up more moolah.  More

AJ has vowed not to try to outbox Usyk second time around and to turn the fight into a war, something the slick southpaw’s old sparring partner Dave Allen reckons could work against him.
The White Rhino told talkSPORT: “I expect Anthony Joshua to make it a completely different match-up this time.
“I think he will try and rush Usyk, he will try and impose his physical strength and size.
“But that is not the way to beat Oleksandr, Oleksandr’s too clever.
“His power was causing problems for Anthony in the first fight and I believe if Anthony is to march on to one, he will get took out pretty devastatingly.
“I think I know how to beat Oleksandr Usyk, but is there a man alive that can do what is necessary to beat him? I’m not sure.

“I don’t think Anthony Joshua has the attributes to do what is necessary.
“I think this time Anthony will take more risks, I think he will come in with a game plan that is aggressive.
“I think he will try and take control of the centre of the ring, push him back and use his power.
“But I think that may leave him open for Usyk’s speed and superior boxing ability.”
Allen has no doubt in his mind Joshua will be confident of exacting revenge on his fellow London 2012 Olympian but doesn’t foresee anyone other than Tyson Fury getting the better of the crafty technician.
He said: “Usyk won convincingly. He outboxed him, he out-fought him, at times he beat him in a firefight, he even out-powered him. He did everything. It was pretty one-sided to be honest…
“I know they’re both Olympic gold medallists, but in terms of boxing ability there’s light years between them.

“They approached it all wrong. I seen him walking to the ring, asking for advice on the way to the ring.
“Anthony, you’re 6ft 6ins, 18 stone, you’re heavyweight champion of the world – believe in yourself.
“Get a game plan, train and believe in that game plan, stick to it, go in the ring and impose your physical strength and size on Usyk.
“But I don’t think we’ll see that. I think Usyk’s got an answer for everything.”
He added: “I believe the only man that is capable of beating Oleksandr Usyk is Tyson Fury.
“And the only man capable of beating Tyson Fury is Oleksandr Usyk.
“So, for me, it’d be the best heavyweight fight probably since Muhammad Ali vs Joe Frazier.

“I think it’s that big, I think the fight would be that big.
“Oleksandr Usyk vs Tyson Fury for all the belts would be one of the biggest fights in the history of boxing.”
Joshua and Usyk are set to renew their rivalry early next year, with SunSport understanding the pair’s rematch is in the works for late March or early April.
