BOXING superstar Canelo Alvarez is ‘much more likely’ to face WBC middleweight king Jermall Charlo than challenge for the cruiserweight title in his next fight.The pound-for-pound king stunned boxing fans across the world last November by announcing he’d challenge Ilunga Makabu for the WBC cruiserweight strap.

Canelo’s shock bid to become a five-weight world champion, however, has seemingly gone cold.
And according to boxing journalist Mike Coppinger, a long-awaited showdown with Charlo on Cinco De Mayo weekend is now ‘more likely’ for the Mexican.
During an appearance on ESPN, Coppinger said: “I’m hearing it’s much more likely he’ll fight Jermall Charlo on Cinco de Mayo.
“There are talks right now for that fight.”
Canelo created history in November by knocking out Caleb Plant to become the first undisputed super-middleweight champion of the world.
And Showtime Sports president Stephen Espinoza recently revealed the 31-year-old is open to facing Charlo next.

He told ES News: “For my money, the two most interesting fights for Canelo next are Jermall Charlo and David Benavidez or David Benavidez and Jermall Charlo.
“We’ve certainly mentioned those to Team Canelo, and there is interest.
“We’ve seen this year that Canelo has stayed busy.
“I would expect that he’ll roll into his next fight pretty quickly.”
The undefeated Charlo, the older twin brother of light-middleweight champ Jermell, has called out Canelo on a number of occasions down the years.
And he did so again after seeing him stop Caleb Plant in the 11th round of the undisputed showdown.
He told Fight Hype: “I’ll go to Mexico and fight Canelo at his house.
“Ronnie (Shields), Ronnie, Ronnie, will we not fight Canelo at his house?

“We will go to Mexico. We love Mexico. We’re from Texas bro.”
And last month, he told his 469,000 Instagram followers: “I wish I could give you the Canelo Álvarez fight for Christmas, but I can’t.

After years of athletics training, Joshua eventually took up boxing in 2007 thanks to his cousin and fellow pro Ben Ileyemi.
And the rigorous strength and condition training he supplemented his boxing with had a profound effect on his physique.

He later added: “Discipline; so tomorrow through your mistake, you’re not going to make the same mistake again, so that’s why I believe mistakes are good.”

“For us, the preferred date and venue for that fight will be the UK, in which case we would have to do the fight outside, so we’re not really interested in doing that fight in March.
“AJ has been training relatively solidly since the fight.
“Realistically if you start your training camp in February, even April becomes quite tight but that is the preferred date for the fight and I think that’s realistic.”

And the former Disney star – who brutally knocked out ex-UFC champ Tyron Woodley late last year – wants to shut up his detractors by getting in the ring with the Mexican Chavez Jr.
He told The Volume Sports: “I like that fight a lot because it silences the critics.
“He was a former world champion and I know I could beat him. That challenge excites me and I’m down.
“Even after I knocked out Woodley they were like ‘fight a real boxer’ and I’m like ‘You guys I tried, and he [Tommy Fury] dropped out of the fight two weeks before’.

THE purse bids for Tyson Fury’s Battle of Britain with Dillian Whyte have been delayed until January 18 amid an ongoing row over the fighters’ respective splits.The WBC ruled late last year that Fury and Whyte would receive 80 and 20 per cent splits of the overall purse.

That split enraged Brixton banger Whyte, who has already taken legal action to ensure he’s given a bigger slice of the pie.
And Fury’s co-promoter Frank Warren has revealed further negotiations have delayed the initial January 11 purse bids.
During an appearance on talkSPORT, the Queensberry Promotions chief said: “First of all, the purse bid’s been pushed back by a week now.
“That was done [Saturday], so the purse bid will be seven days after so I think it’s next Monday or Tuesday.
“As regarding the split, of course, they’re entitled to an appeal. I don’t think they’ll get anywhere because purse bids are based upon boxers’ previous earnings.
“Tyson’s last purse that [was] lodged with the WBC was £20million and Dillian Whyte’s purse was £300,000, that’s why it’s at the split it’s at.

“A situation in the last year I can think of is when Canelo fought against his mandatory at the time, Billy Joe Saunders, but Billy had just done a deal.
“There was no way he was going to get any 45 per cent of a purse because the guy who generates the most money out of the two of them is Canelo.”
Warren reckons Whyte’s appeal of the WBC’s ruling will land flat on its face.
He continued: “Certainly when you’ve got a heavyweight generating the money that Tyson’s generating, there’s never gonna be that kind of split.
“That is not something that’s new, this has been this way for over 25 years at least. Most of the organisations operate this way and that’s what it is.
“They can make their appeal, nobody would in any way from our perspective say you can’t do that, but fact of the matter is I don’t think it will make a difference.”

He told talkSPORT: “There’s not really a huge amount of negotiations. There’s a ruling from the WBC of an 80-20 split.

“Until that ruling is made, we’ll have to see where we’re at.

“If that’s the final ruling and we have to go to purse bids for that fight, we will bid what we believe the value of that fight is.
“Clearly right now we have a very different assessment of that value than other people according to the bids and offers that have been made to Dillian Whyte.”

Former pound-for-pound king Mayweather revealed this week he’ll return to the ring for an exhibition days before his 45th birthday.
Mayweather’s third exhibition will be held on the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah’s HELIPAD four days before his birthday.
He wrote on Instagram: “February 20th, we haven’t chosen an opponent yet but I look forward to it and hopefully we give you guys something to see.”

But he took some time out of his regime to shadow box in the blistering cold on what appeared to be a snow-covered hill.
Usyk shared footage of himself throwing combinations in a thick jacket as a fan blew an icy storm in his face.
Slick southpaw Usyk ended Joshua’s second reign as unified heavyweight champion last September with a masterclass at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The pair’s second dance was initially slated to take place in late March but is now being targeted for April.
AJ promoter Eddie Hearn revealed this week: “I think April is realistic for that fight.
“Before you know it, it’s going to be February and these fights take a lot of organising.”

Usyk had hoped to make the first defence of his unified titles on home soil, although his second clash with AJ is likely to place in the UK.
Hearn continued: “For us the preferred date and venue for that fight will be the UK, in which case we would have to do the fight outside, so we’re not really interested in doing that fight in March.
“AJ has been training relatively solidly since the fight.
“Realistically if you start your training camp in February, even April becomes quite tight but that is the preferred date for the fight and I think that’s realistic.”
Former undisputed cruiserweight king Usyk noticed some peculiar behaviour from Joshua when analysing him ahead of their first showdown.
He said: “I did notice that he was quite tired after the fight [in September].
“I noticed that before the first fight with Ruiz, he looked strange. But I don’t think about why it happens.
“Maybe it’s for some internal reasons. I don’t want to think about the reasons.

“The hands on the ropes, it was not quite that unusual – there might be very different reasons for that.
