But that is unlikely to happen after Usyk returned to his homeland of Ukraine to fight in the front line against the Russian invasion.
Now, according to Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn, there are FOUR potential opponents on the shortlist.
And Wilder, who is still considering his future in boxing after two crushing defeats to Tyson Fury, is top of the pile.
Speaking to iFL TV, the Matchroom boss said: “We’ve got to look at the opponents.
“AJ was talking last night about Luis Ortiz, Otto Wallin – a southpaw, the same as Usyk, might make sense.

“I think if you said to AJ right now, ‘Who’s your top choice?’ I think he’d probably go for Deontay Wilder.
“It’s not an interim fight, let’s be honest. One thing’s for sure, he’ll be fighting a top ten heavyweight, a world ranked heavyweight.”
And in a Q&A with DAZN, Hearn also hoped that Wilder stays in the sport to set up a potential clash against his man.
He said: “Anthony Joshua has proved time and time again he’ll fight anybody.”
“A great fight if Wilder stays in the sport, I believe at some stage that fight will happen.”
Wilder is taking time out to work out his next move after losing two and drawing one of three fights against Fury.

And Fury believes the Brixton banger zipped his mouth so he wouldn’t be further stiffed on his split of the £31million purse for their April war at Wembley.
He told Queensbury Promotions: “I did tell him on Instagram a few months ago, every time you call me a bad name your percentage will go down.

The Gypsy King has claimed to be the best heavyweight of his era – but was told he has not got a patch on champions of the past.
Via The Star, Whyte’s trainer Xavier Miller said: “The era I like is more towards the end of the 80s and the 90s.
“The likes of Evander Holyfield and Riddick Bowe. To me, technically, they were on a different planet.
“If I watch Holyfield v Riddick Bowe part one, and then I watch Wilder v Fury, the difference in class is just amazing.
“I mean, he’s not on that level. I know everyone gives him a lot of praise and a lot of hype. And yes he can box well, but you know, he’s beatable. And we’re going to beat him.”

He said: “It will be interesting because he hasn’t faced anything quite like Dillian Whyte.
“Whyte can do a lot of different things in the ring, he is very versatile; aggressive, power in both hands, good counter puncher, good body puncher, so Tyson would have a lot to deal with.
“At the same time Tyson’s very tall, can box at long range. It’s a fight I’ve always wanted for Dillian ever since I became head trainer.”

However, Usyk has bravely taken up arms to defend Ukraine in the war against Russia, who invaded his country, and that could see their fight being shelved.
Both AJ and his promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed they will be open to an interim bout in the meantime with various names being thrown into the mix.
Among them is fellow British boxer Joyce who is a WBO mandatory challenger and has a good shot of stepping in.
Joshua would have no problem facing the Juggernaut but warned he would knock him out in just one round like he did in the past when they were youngsters.
A fan claimed on Twitter the 32-year-old wouldn’t take on Joyce, who was knocked back due to a ‘lack of credibility’ in 2019, as he would have the tools to beat him.
