Anthony Joshua was permanently ‘scarred’ by Andy Ruiz and could soon say ‘goodbye’ to boxing, says Carl Froch

ANTHONY JOSHUA’S spectacular defeat to Andy Ruiz Jr left him permanently “scarred” – so much so he could soon walk away from the sport, Carl Froch has claimed.AJ was battered by short-notice foe Ruiz Jr in his ill-fated American debut in June 2019, suffering four knockdowns on his way to a seventh-round TKO defeat.

Joshua, 33, exacted his revenge in their rematch six months later and scored a brutal knockout of Kubrat Pulev before suffering back-to-back defeats to Oleksandr Usyk.
The former two-time unified heavyweight champion has been accused of showing a lack of killer instinct since that fateful night at Madison Square Garden, which British boxing great Froch believes has a had lasting effect.
The Cobra told William Hill: “When you’ve made it and you’re world champion and you’re pretty much financially secure, you start to almost question being a boxer.
“I think that’s Anthony Joshua ’s problem now. He got beat up by Andy Ruiz Jr and that’s mentally scarred him – he knows he can get hurt, he knows he can get stopped.”

Joshua’s route back to world title contention is a long one following his second consecutive decision defeat to Usyk in August.
And Froch wouldn’t be surprised if the Olympic gold medallist calls it a day in the near future.
He said: “AJ’s got to be worth £100million, minimum. If you’ve got what you want out of life and you’ve achieved it, why are you going to go back into the ring and get your head punched in?
“Why would you? It’s a dangerous sport. You have to weigh up whether the risk is worth the reward.

“‘What am I fighting for? Some more money that I don’t need and that I’ll never spend? What’s the risk?’ It could be goodbye.”
Froch had the same conversation with himself after his knockout of George Groves at Wembley in the summer of 2014.
He said: “I just think when you get to a certain level in boxing and you’ve made your money, and your legacy is secure, like me when I boxed at Wembley and chinned Groves, I had nothing else left to do.
“You’re at the top of that mountain and all you can do is go down over the other side.”
Joshua dismissed the notion of retirement after his Saudi showdown with Usyk and is set to return to the ring early next year.
And promoter Eddie Hearn recently revealed AJ is leaning towards a trilogy fight with Dillian Whyte for his comeback bout.
AJ is eyeing a trilogy fight with rival Dillian WhyteCredit: THE SUN
He told The DAZN Boxing Show: “In terms of names, talking to [Joshua] the other day, he wants to fight Dillian Whyte, really.
“Dillian Whyte fights on November 26 against [Jermaine] Franklin, who is talking a tremendous game, and we’ll see how that plays out.
“I think Dillian Whyte is the frontrunner [for Joshua] if he comes through.
“Otto Wallin is a guy that has reached out numerous times.
“That’s a good fight for him as well. Then there’s the [Deontay] Wilder situation.
“I’m not saying that’s going to be the fight for January or February, but it’s definitely a fight that he’s looking at.

“The feeling for AJ is the value of – and by the way, none of them are easy fights – a tune-up is sometimes they’re as dangerous as each other.
“I don’t think he wants to start dropping out of the top 15 and top 10 of the governing bodies and just looking for an easy touch. I think he wants a real fight, and those are all real fights that you could see.” More

‘Just f***** fight’ – Jake Paul urges Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua to ‘give people what they want’ after failed talks

His comeback fight comes after Tommy Fury, 23, and Hasim Rahman Jr, 31, both withdrew from fighting him in August.
Paul has become tired of bouts falling through and took aim at the lack of boxing stars willing to put their records on the line.
He said at the press conference: “Get these fights done, stop shooting yourself in the foot and being greedy.
“Give the people what they want, don’t look at every term in the contract and try to change it. Just f****ng fight.

“You spar everyday, why not get paid tens of millions of dollars to do it front of people?
“They are very cared to risk their undefeated records but boxing needs these big fights, don’t let your manager or promoter stop you.
“You’ve got to be in control.”
Joshua, 33, and Fury, 34, failed to agree terms to a December 3 blockbuster in Wales, much to Paul’s frustration.

He later told media: “It sucks for the fans, those are the ones that get hurt. It’s bad, this is why the sport has gone to bad places before.
“It’s gone to scary moments where you think the sport is end up dying out because big fights like this aren’t happening.
“Why didn’t we get Fury vs Joshua? There are so many instances where big fights should be made and they’re not.”

Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk boost as WBO claim Joe Joyce’s mandatory shot not imminent as they target unification fight

A HEAVYWEIGHT unification fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk has been handed a boost as WBO boss admitted Joe Joyce’s shot at the Ukrainian is not imminent. Putney pounder Joyce is the mandatory challenger for Usyk’s WBO title and has been vocal about getting his hands on the undefeated 35-year-old.

However, despite his KO win over Joseph Parker, Joyce may have to wait with his title shot not in the works, according to WBO president Paco Valcarcel, who says they do not “want to stop any unification” fight between Usyk and WBC champ Fury.
A fight between 33-year-old Fury and Usyk would see all the heavyweight titles be up for grabs.
WBA and IBF mandatories, potentially Daniel Dubois and Filip Hrgovic respectively, could also be in line before Joyce.
Joyce and Usyk bumped into one another at the 35th WBO Convention and were friendly.

The pair posed for a picture and promoter Frank Warren talked up a future fight.
Warren recently said: “We’ve worked very hard over the last few years on this heavyweight scene and we’ve guided our guys in different organisations and we’ve boxed it off a bit so I’m pleased.
“Joe did extremely well [against Joseph Parker], got great reviews back from America because his fight did big numbers over there.
“It was a good fight to watch. He’s set himself up.

An injured rib last December and US visa issues this August saw the 2019 Love Islander pulled out of the pay-per-view paydays.
But it was Paul and his promotional partners who were left footing the bill of the axed events.
So the American will leave it to Fury and his team to finance another go at rescheduling, even if his own family have urged him to walk away.
Paul, 25, said: “I’m tired of them wasting our money, so if Tommy pulls out again it’s their money. I dunno, I’m still sceptical about it.

“My brother tells me everyday, and my dad calls me every day damn near and say, ‘Don’t give this f***er another chance.
“So I dunno, we might not.”
Fury’s hopes of negotiating again were dashed after Paul agreed to face UFC legend Anderson Silva, 47, this coming weekend in Arizona.
Paul last fought in December, knocking out Tyron Woodley, 40, four months after beating the ex-UFC champion on points.

That added to KOs over online rival AnEsonGib, ex-NBA star Nate Robinson and retired UFC welterweight Ben Askren.
Woodley filled in on under two weeks’ notice after Fury, 23, suffered his rib injury in training.
The celeb mega-fight was rescheduled for August in New York – but that was soon KOd when Fury suffered US visa issues.
Heavyweight Hasim Rahman Jr, 31, initially signed as a substitute, only for lightening to strike twice, this time due to a weight disagreement.
It has set the scene for Paul to return in the biggest test of his career against Silva, who last year beat ex-world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, 36.
He said: “I know this is my toughest test, it’s not going to be easy.
“I’m going to have to outbox the boxer, who just beat a world champion in the sport of boxing.
“It’s motivating but I have that chip on my shoulder and I’ve carried that into my whole entire camp.”

Watch amazing throwback footage as world title contender Joe Joyce gets KO’d in just 34 SECONDS in amateur boxing fight

FOOTAGE of Joe Joyce being knocked out in less than a minute has resurfaced. The Putney pounder is on the brink of a world title shot following his spectacular 11th-round stoppage of former WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker last month.

Joe Joyce was dropped by Sergey Kuzmin at the 2013 European Championships
The Russian flattened Joyce with a sickening overhand right
Joyce collapsed to the canvas and the fight was stopped after a mere 34 seconds
Joyce has yet to taste defeat since turning pro five years ago, although he did hit the canvas in his 2013 European Championships clash with Sergey Kuzmin.
Footage of the Russian knocking out Joyce with a hammer of an overhand right 34 seconds into their super-heavyweight clash recently recirculated on Twitter.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Kuzmin said of the stunning stoppage victory: “It happened very quickly and it was not a very long fight.
“It’s hard to describe all that came through my head because I didn’t get to see much of what he brought into the fight.

“This was the super-heavyweight division and each and every punch matters.
“I delivered a very good punch accurately and with good timing and it ended the fight.”
Kuzmin would love to run into Joyce in the professional ranks, although he wouldn’t take too much from their 2013 clash.
The European Championships silver medallist said: “If the fight happens we will see.

“It would not make any sense to compare one fight to another and amateur and professional boxing.
“But hopefully we will meet one day in the ring and we will see, I am very interested in fighting Joyce in the future in the pros.”
Joyce’s stunning stoppage of Parker solidified his status as the mandatory challenger for Oleksandr Usyk’s WBO title.
Promoter Frank Warren recently said: “We’ve worked very hard over the last few years on this heavyweight scene and we’ve guided our guys in different organisations and we’ve boxed it off a bit so I’m pleased.

Carl Froch reveals he’d take on Jake or Logan Paul as his last fight if he was to come out of retirement for mega payday

CARL FROCH has revealed he’d happily lace up his gloves again for a dust-up with YouTube sensation Jake Paul. The four-time super-middleweight champion retired from boxing in the summer of 2015 but has flirted with the prospect of returning to the ring again over the last seven years.

Froch would happily fight both the Paul brothers on the same night
And The Cobra admits he’d love to put a sting into the tale of Paul’s burgeoning boxing career.
He told William Hill: “If I could have one last fight it would be Jake Paul. I’d absolutely smash him to bits, easy.”
“Jake Paul can’t fight, he’s pretending, he’s conning people.
“He’s got his audience, I don’t begrudge him – he’s making money and doing what he’s doing. But he’s not a professional boxer.”
    READ MORE IN SPORT
Paul, 25, has yet to take on a professional boxer during his brief stint in the sport – and Froch believes he’d be wary of facing him if the opportunity presented itself.
The 45-year-old said: “He knows not to come anywhere near me. He’s bigger than me, he’s 14 stone, he’s younger than me, he’s fresher, he thinks he can fight.
“I wouldn’t even train for this guy, I’d do a little bit of training.
“I might do the odd little run to get the heart beating, but I’d take Jake Paul to school and hammer him. He knows it, he wouldn’t fight me. No chance.”
Froch is so confident of battering Paul he’d be open to facing his older brother Logan on the same night.
He said: “I’d fight him and his brother on the same night. What they could do is take it in turns, so Jake can do round one and Logan can do round two.
“So they’re having a four-minute breather between rounds. It’s never been done, it’s exhibition boxing. I’d take them both on.”

Former Disney star Jake will be back in action early on Saturday morning against MMA legend Anderson Silva.
Logan, meanwhile, hasn’t fought since taking boxing great Floyd Mayweather the distance in their eight-round exhibition last July. More

Fury, 34, has already recorded his version of the iconic anthem, which will be available from November 11 – just before the World Cup
The WBC heavyweight champion said: “Sweet Caroline is a record I’ve always loved and I’m excited to record and release it.
“And thanks to the folks over at Warner Music, they’ve given me the opportunity to do that, and what better time to release it than around the World Cup.”

All the profits from Fury’s single will go to Talk Club, a charity focused on getting men to open up about their mental health struggles.
Fury dealt with his own issues after his toppling of Wladimir Klitschko in November 2015 and still fights a daily battle with his demons.
He said: “I have been very vocal about my mental health struggle, especially since my comeback.
“It has been widely printed about my highs and lows, ups and downs, so I’ve tried my best to keep talking about it as much as I can and keep trying to smash the stigma.”

Talk Club founders Ben Akers and Gavin Thorpe believe Fury’s involvement will inspire other men battling with depression and other forms of mental health problems to speak up.

Anderson Silva says ‘I am fit and ready’ as he clarifies talk he was KO’d in sparring and plots knockout of Jake Paul

ANDERSON SILVA has shut down suggestions he was knocked-out twice in sparring ahead of his fight with Jake Paul. The pair are set to go head-to-head in Phoenix, Arizona this weekend as the 47-year-old looks to continue his impressive start to life in boxing after a long time in UFC.

With Paul looking to claim one of the biggest scalps of his career, Silva has a challenge on his hands to make it five wins in six fights.
But fans were left worried by his preparation after the UFC legend said he was knocked out twice in sparring ahead of the bout.
But he has since clarified his comments.
Silva was quotes as saying: “I’m training hard for win — I’m training with the good boxers, high-level, and five guys come to help me.

“And the last sparring with [my sparring partner], he is knocked me out two times, and when I finish my training, I talked to my coach and even said, ‘coach, let me tell you something, why the guys knock me out two times?’
“And the coach said, ‘You need to prepare for war, and you prepare for war.’”
But Silva’s longtime coach Luiz Carlos Dorea told MMA Fighting that Silva’s story was incorrect, and he was not knocked out.
He said: “What I can say is that didn’t happen,” he said. “Thank God we follow all the steps in training and Anderson did excellent sparring [sessions]. He’s 100 percent for the fight.”

Silva has also clarified his comment.
He said: “After seeing the reports and concern for me, I’d like to clarify two important things. One, I was NEVER knocked out in sparring. I misspoke in that interview as I sometimes do when interviewing in English and exaggerated the normal back-and-forth action that occurs in sparring.
“Second, this sparring session I referenced was in early September. The interview with MMA Weekly was done on September 13 and, for some reason, just released this week. So, it wasn’t recent.
“More importantly, my training camp has been great. I am fit and ready to fight and the only knockout people should be worried about is the one I’m about to deliver to Jake Paul on Saturday night.”
Despite the denial, The Arizona Department of Gaming, which oversees the state’s boxing commission, said they would be “looking into the matter.”
Silva is looking to hand The Problem Child his first loss.
Paul was supposed to be fighting Tommy Fury in August but plans fell through after an issue with the Brit’s US visa.

A bout with Hasim Rahman Jr was also set up, but that also fell through due to a problem making weight on the heavyweight fighter’s side.
