And supporters of his former club Lyon were ecstatic for their fellow countryman.
Benzema came through the Ligue 1 outfit’s youth set-up and then scored 66 goals in 148 appearances for the first team.
He won four successive French titles between 2005 and 2008, before leaving to join Real Madrid in 2009 for £35.2million.
But, 13 years on from his departure, he has by no means been forgotten – with Lyon fans still loving him more than a decade on.

And they showcased their love for the striker by flooding the streets in celebration of his Ballon d’Or success.
Flares were lit and songs were sung as they paraded Benzema’s glory at the Place des Terreaux, a square located in the south-east city of Lyon.
And the scenes come just one month out from the World Cup – with French fans hoping the Real Madrid forward can fire them to a second successive trophy.
Benzema was not part of France’s World Cup-winning squad in 2018.

He returned to the national team for last year’s European Championships, but Didier Deschamps’ men were eliminated by Switzerland in the last 16.
Yet despite Benzema’s stunning 12 months, France are not in good form heading to Qatar.
The world champions have won just one of their last six matches, losing to Croatia and Denmark twice.
And Deschamps’ side were decimated by injuries during last month’s international break.
Benzema, Adrien Rabiot, Kingsley Coman, N’Golo Kante, Paul Pogba, Boubacar Kamara, Ibrahima Konate, Lucas Digne, Presnel Kimpembe, Theo Hernandez and Hugo Lloris were all unavailable for selection.

It leaves France with no time to formulate a coherent team, with an absence of warm-up matches before their first Group D game at the World Cup against Australia on November 22.
They have also been drawn in a group alongside Denmark and Tunisia – who they face on November 26 and November 30. More

Watch Gigot’s red-card tackle on Neymar spark 19-man brawl – but did Marseille defender actually touch PSG star?

SAMUEL GIGOT was sent off for a late tackle on Neymar last night… but his boss Igor Tudor claims he didn’t even touch him.Paris Saint-Germain hosted rivals Marseille in a feisty Classique at Parc des Princes.

The incident sparked a furious meleeCredit: Reuters
The visitors went into the match reeling from last week’s shock home loss to Ajaccio which put a dent in their good start to the season.
Tudor’s side were a tough match for PSG, however, getting in their faces and looking to dominate possession.
But a cheap turnover by the under-par Amine Harit gifted PSG a golden opportunity to counter-attack on the stroke of half-time, with Neymar finishing off Kylian Mbappe’s pass to sweep the champions into the lead.
Marseille remained a threat in the second-half, but shot themselves in the foot with 20 minutes remaining.

Gigot, who had replaced the injured Eric Bailly earlier in the second-half, absolutely flew into a challenge on Neymar in a position of little danger.
The Brazilian yelped in pain and curled up into a ball on the ground, with his pal Marquinhos subsequently booked for his role in the resulting 19-man melee between opposition players.
Referee Clement Turpin did not hesitate in flashing a red card at Gigot, with BT Sport analyst Clive Allen describing the challenge as “totally indisciplined” and “horrendous”.
While Gigot’s tackle was high and late, replays suggested that contact was actually minimal.

After the match, Tudor said: “I didn’t see it, but I was told that he didn’t touch the player.
“I have to look at the pictures. If you give a red card because he touched him, that’s normal.
“But if it’s just to punish the intention, it’s a mistake.”
Marseille, featuring former Arsenal aces Matteo Guendouzi and Nuno Tavares, still tried to push for an equaliser with ten men, but were unable to break down PSG’s stubborn resistance.
The win saw Christophe Galtier’s side climb three points clear of surprise packages Lorient at the top of the table, and six ahead of fourth-placed Marseille.
After the match, Mbappe denied widespread reports that is unhappy and wants to leave in the winter transfer window.

He said: “I have not asked to leave Paris Saint-Germain in January. I’m not furious with the club, it’s not true.”

PSG are now three points clear in Ligue 1 and undefeated all season.
Neymar steered strikepartner Mbappe’s low cross home on the brink of half-time after Marseille keeper Pau Lopez had regularly thwarted Christophe Galtier’s men.
PSG were often forced on the backfoot after that – until Gigot’s shameful exit on 72 minutes.
The home side bombarded the Marseille goal early on.

Fit-again Lionel Messi forced Lopez into two low saves inside the first five minutes and Achraf Hakimi was also denied by the Spanish stopper.
Marseille regained their composure, but Lopez was again their hero when he blocked from Mbappe following Neymar’s quick break.
And finally Marco Verratti nipped in following sloppy Marseille play to reelase Mbappe, who fed Mbappe for a calm low opener
The visitors, though, dominated the early stages of the second period, led by Chancel Mbemba’s forward bursts.
But Marseille failed to create clear chances as they lacked a sharp edge up front.

PSG line up transfer for Arsenal ace William Saliba just months after defender finally returned to Emirates

ARSENAL star William Saliba is attracting interest from Paris Saint-Germain, according to reports. The 21-year-old has starred for the Gunners this season after spending the last two campaigns out on loan in France.
PSG could move for William Saliba if he cannot agree a new deal at the EmiratesCredit: Alamy
However a move back to Ligue 1 could be on the cards as PSG are monitoring his contract situation with Saliba having just under two years left on his deal.
Rumours suggest that there could be some complications over tying the Frenchman down long-term and PSG have already made contact over a possible transfer.
Arsenal are looking to hand improved deals to Saliba, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli to fight off interest from other teams with confidence that all three will sign.
CBS Sports’ Ben Jacobs claims Saliba’s is the most complicated of the trio to get done.
    READ MORE ON ARSENAL
He said: “Compared to Martinelli and Saka, he’s [Saliba] only been back at the club a few months.
“He’s still coming to terms with a lot of voices in his ear. It’s not just Marseille, it’s PSG saying: ‘if you’re that uncertain or unsure about Arsenal, we can potentially bring you in’.
“PSG are definitely still looking for defenders. I see no reason he would want to leave but the only caveat there is he did love living in France. If PSG did come in, it might give him a decision to make.
“Arsenal have confidence but there is a lot more concrete interest around Saliba.”

He has started every Premier League game so far for Mikel Arteta’s side and is swiftly becoming a fan’s favourite having also netted two goals.
Saliba has been praised by both Ian Wright and Cesc Fabregas recently.
PSG are a tad short in central defence after letting Thilo Kehrer and Abdou Diallo leave over the summer and not signing any direct replacements.
Meanwhile Sergio Ramos is now 36-years-old and there has been interest in Presnel Kimpembe previously.
But seeing Saliba move back to a French side would be a shock. More

Calls for Neymar to face FIVE YEARS in prison as Brazil superstar goes on trial over 2013 transfer to Barcelona

A BRAZILIAN investment firm has called for Neymar to be put in prison for FIVE YEARS on fraud and corruption charges. The 30-year-old will stand trial in Barcelona on Monday just weeks before he is due to run out for Brazil at the World Cup.

Neymar faces charges over his move from Santos to Barcelona in 2013.
Investment firm DIS owned 40 per cent of the rights to Neymar at the time of the transfer.
But the company argue they lost out on a fair share of the fee because the now Paris Saint-Germain star was sold for below his value.
Barcelona paid €57.1million (£50m) at the time to sign Neymar from the Brazilian club, with €40m (£35m) of that paid to his family.

DIS invested €2m (£1.7m) in buying a chunk of Neymar’s rights when he was 17, and received a 40 per cent share of the €17.1m (£15m) leftover from the transfer.
And they argue they should have received more money.
A DIS lawyer said yesterday: “Neymar’s rights have not been sold to the highest bidder. There were clubs that offered up to 60m euros.”
His lawyers argued that “The rules of free competition do not operate since the transfer from one club to another depends on the free will of the player.”

They added: “The player is not a service or a commodity. He is a person of his own free will.”
Neymar previously denied the fraud and corruption allegations but lost a Spanish High Court appeal in 2017, so the trial has now been called by Spanish prosecutors.
He has to be there for the first day of the trial on Monday, but it’s unknown if he will have to stay for the entire two-week hearing.
Spanish prosecutors are seeking a two-year prison sentence for Neymar and a €10m (£8.6m) fine.
Neymar’s two parents, Barcelona, Santos, ex-Barca presidents Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell, plus ex-Santos president Odilio Rodrigues are all also standing trial.
Like Neymar, Rosell has previously denied any wrongdoing.

DIS want Rosell and Bartomeu to be jailed along with Neymar, as well as being slapped with a whopping €149m (£129m) fine.
Meanwhile Spanish prosecutors want Rosell to be jailed for five years and Barca handed an €8.4m (£7.3m) fine.

Neymar’s lawyers have said Spanish courts “lack jurisdiction to prosecute the Neymar family” because the transfer involved Brazilian nationals and happened in Brazil.
The alleged crimes are not punishable in the South American country, and Neymar’s lawyers said the transfer had not broken any Fifa regulations.

Inside incredible PSG squad split with just FOUR stars in Kylian Mbappe’s corner as Neymar clique dominate dressing room

KYLIAN MBAPPE has just FOUR allies left in the Paris Saint-Germain squad, according to reports. The French champions are in crisis mode after it emerged this week that Mbappe wants to LEAVE in January.

Just five months after penning a £650,000-a-week contract extension, the 23-year-old has asked out as he feels “betrayed” by the club’s hierarchy.
This has reportedly gone down badly with the majority of the squad, who are tired of Mbappe’s antics and feel that he has been given everything he could have wanted.
The Frenchman’s relationship with Neymar has come under the microscope, with the two having repeatedly clashed.
Mbappe reportedly wanted PSG transfer chief Luis Campos, with whom he is close, to get rid of the Brazilian in the summer.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
The two were involved in an on-pitch argument in August, when Neymar demanded to take a penalty during a clash with Montpellier, after Mbappe had missed one earlier in the 5-2 win.
Unfortunately for Mbappe, far more of the squad appear to be on the Brazilian’s side.
According to L’Equipe, PSG’s sizeable South American and Spanish-speaking contingent are fed up with him, and are backing Neymar in the dispute.
Brazilian centre-back Marquinhos is a key ally of his compatriot, who has been in blistering form this season.

Of the remaining members of the squad, only Presnel Kimpembe, Nordi Mukiele, Hugo Ekitike and Achraf Hakimi are backing Mbappe.
It’s claimed the 2018 World Cup winner was left livid with PSG’s summer transfer business.
Campos and Co recruited seven new stars; Nuno Mendes, Vitinha, Ekitike, Mukiele, Renato Sanches, Fabian Ruiz and Carlos Soler.
But it’s claimed Mbappe was desperate for them to sign Robert Lewandowski, Bernardo Silva and Milan Skriniar.
Mbappe is also said to be unhappy with how he has been deployed by boss Christophe Galtier.
After PSG’s 0-0 draw with Reims last week, he wrote on Instagram: “Match drawn, back on Tuesday. #icicestparis #pivotgang.”
Mbappe’s use of #pivotgang caused a stir – suggesting he is unhappy at leading the line on his own, and would rather play alongside another striker.
Ahead of Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw with Benfica, Campos attempted to calm the situation.
He told French broadcaster Canal Plus: “Mbappe has never told me about his intention to leave in January. We speak with him, Messi, Ney… we’re very happy to be here.

“We have to be very clear that this isn’t a declaration – it is news that has come out a few hours before a very important match against Benfica.”
Mbappe scored from the penalty spot in the draw, although Lionel Messi’s stony-faced reaction to the goal was captured by TV cameras.

PSG ‘ran smear campaign against Kylian Mbappe and hired army of fake Twitter followers to criticise star’

PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN allegedly ran a smear campaign against striker Kylian Mbappe, even hiring Twitter followers to criticise the French star.Reports surfaced on Tuesday night suggesting that Mbappe wants to leave the club as early as January.
Mbappe’s relationship with PSG is reportedly “completely broken”Credit: Getty
It is claimed the relationship between the player and club is “completely broken” and that there is “no way back”.
Now more detail has come out, with a Mediapart investigation alleging that PSG have created fake Twitter accounts to lead campaigns against various outlets and employees of the club.
One of those is reportedly star player Mbappe.
An example given comes from March 2019 when there was speculation surrounding Mbappe joining Real Madrid.

The forward came out and stated he was happy at PSG despite them having just been eliminated from the Champions League.
And an account going by the name of Paname Squad – which Mediapart allege was provided with information by PSG – congratulated Mbappe on his decision, while insisting he “work in silence”.
The same account then slammed the decision to give him the Ligue 1 player of the year award.
Meanwhile, PSG have denied allegations accusing them of creating a smear campaign.

The club say they have “never contacted an agency in order to damage individuals or institutions”.
Mbappe only signed a new deal with PSG in the summer – which made him the highest-paid player in world football.
Now he is seeking a way out of the club, with Real Madrid and Liverpool both being linked with a move for the World Cup winner.
Just hours after it was revealed that Mbappe wants a transfer away from the French capital, sensational reports stated he had already signed a deal to join Real Madrid. More

He has also started all three of Marseille’s Champions League clashes this season – earning calls for a potential Portugal World Cup inclusion in the process.
Tavares, 22, has reflected on his brilliant start to life in the South of France… and where it went wrong for him in North London, saying: “At Arsenal, I do not know if it was a problem of competition with Kieran Tierney, but for me, that’s not even the point.
“I came to Marseille to finally be able to play in my position.
“When signing with OM, I wanted to have an option to buy, but Arsenal refused.

Speaking to French paper La Provence, he added: “I’m good here. I feel good here and it shows in the matches.

Tavares joined the Gunners for around £8million in 2021.
