    Fabio Paim was dubbed ‘better than Cristiano Ronaldo’ but love of cars and disastrous loan to Chelsea ended his career

    CRISTIANO RONALDO marked people’s cards when he first arrived at Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon.He cheekily said to those around at the time: “If you think I’m good, wait until you see Fabio Paim.”

    Incredibly, Paim was more highly regarded at Lisbon than either Ronaldo or now-Wolves star Joao Moutinho.
    Ronaldo has established himself as one of the greatest players in history with 198 international caps as Moutinho closes in on 150 matches for his country.
    Unfortunately for Paim, despite winning 42 international caps at youth level for Portugal’s Under-16’s all the way through to the Under-21’s, he faded completely into obscurity.
    He didn’t earn a single senior international cap, and as he admitted, he didn’t deserve to either.
    Because Paim’s story is an educational one for youth players who get bumper contracts when they’re kids and think they’ve already made it.
    He joined Sporting at the age of six, and by 14 Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester United were regularly checking on his progress.
    Even the French Football Federation offered him the chance to move to France so he could represent their country.
    To warn everybody off, Sporting tied Paim down on an £18,000 per week contract.

    However, little did they know they would be sowing the seeds for his eventual downfall.
    He told Globoesporte in 2017: “I spent a lot of money on cars. I love cars. I spent lavishly on the ones I wanted. All of them.
    “Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Maserati and even a Punto. Every car you could imagine.
    “When you have a lot of money, you need a support system around you. I would have done it differently, if I could.
    “I knew what I was doing. I believed I had more talent than everyone else.
    “Like everyone, I wanted to feel good, wear nice clothing, drive a nice car and behave with no humility.
    “But, it’s normal, that’s what people work for, to be satisfied. On the field, I did what I had to, in order to retreat to my place. I spent time with people I wanted to and did what I wanted.
    “At the time, no one criticised me when things were going well. But when I stopped playing, they started pointing the finger. I just wanted to be with my cars.”
    Paim was born in the luxurious surroundings of Estoril, a famed luxury entertainment destination on the Portuguese Riviera.

    However, he didn’t come from money. Paim added: “I was not used to having money. When I started playing, I didn’t even have proper boots. I wasn’t ready for it.
    “I didn’t have what young players have now which is an example to follow. You need role models. I feel proud and a little ashamed to pass along this message to them.”
    After failing to break into the Sporting Lisbon team, super agent Jorge Mendes brokered a loan deal for Paim to try his luck at Chelsea in 2008.
    Playing for the Blues’ reserve side under Brendan Rodgers, it was hoped the move would kickstart his career again.
    But, if anything, it was the final nail in the coffin, as he revealed: “It was there where I stopped training and doing my work.
    “I started drinking. I had money and I started doing a lot of things I didn’t do before. The doors were open for me to do what I felt like.”
    After a season in West London he returned to Portugal and was eventually released by Sporting in 2010.
    Paim then became a footballing journeyman, joining 12 different clubs in seven different countries, playing in countries including Angola, Qatar, Malta and even Lithuania.
    More recently, he was looking for game time with Portuguese second division side, Leixoes S.C in 2018, before moving to fourth tier side AD Sao Pedro da Cova on a free.
    In 2019, Paim was arrested for possession of narcotics, but was later acquitted as wire-tapping is not admissible in a court of law.

    But Paim knows where he went wrong and where Ronaldo went right.
    He said: “At one point, I could do more than him but I did not have what he had, which is the strength and desire to be what I wanted to be.
    “He had a great work ethic and I didn’t have that. I had the quality, at least as much as him, but I did not have the rest.
    “I would have preferred to have less quality if I had more of the other part. I would have been one of the best in the world.
    “But, no one is born perfect. I thought having talent was enough but it’s not.” More

      Stones, 27, reportedly has a tattoo of Millie’s face on his arm, which he got inked after allegations that he cheated on her with events manager Jessica Peaty in 2016.
      The couple share a daughter, who they welcomed in 2017.
      But in November 2018, just four months after Millie cheered him on in Russia, Stones unexpectedly packed a bag and quit their £3.4million Cheshire mansion.

      Stones was spoken to by cops but not suspected of committing any offence.
      Millie has since moved into a new home paid for by Stones, where she can stay until their daughter turns 18.
      A source close to Stones said: “John is a devoted and loving father and his priority has and always will be the welfare and total privacy of his daughter.
      “He denies and refutes the version of events described and has always gone above and beyond since his break up with Millie to protect his daughter.”

      They enjoyed a very casual wedding in Crewe in March 2020, after postponing their Maldives plans due to Covid.

      But she sparked controversy in December after sharing an Instagram post which appeared to support anti-vax protestors at the disruptive Freedom March in London.
      Megan posted a snap of an attendee holding a placard which read: “Even if you’re not conspiracy minded, something in your soul has to say…something is wrong.”
      The photo appears to have since been deleted from her account.

      Another WAG who likes to keep a low profile is Annabelle Peyton – engaged to Crystal Palace goalkeeper Jack Butland, 29.
      The couple, who met in Dubai, got together in 2016, after Jack was dumped by his childhood sweetheart Steph Parsons.
      They got engaged two years later in April 2018 in Italy, and are now parents to two sons, George, three, and Freddie, one.
      Butland previously told MailOnline that he “owes the world” to “incredible” Annabelle, after she helped him recover from an injury.
      Annabelle – a former air hostess for Emirates – keeps her Instagram account private, but now and again proud Butland shares a sweet snap of the two of them together.

      These two lovebirds tied the knot in secret yesterday at Crewe Register Office, with only close friends and family in the know.
      Manchester United captain Maguire, 29, went straight from training to the ceremony.
      The couple are expected to take their marriage vows again in France this summer at a romantic chateau venue.
      Maguire began dating Fern, also 29, in 2011 when the pair were teenagers and they got engaged in February 2018.
      They welcomed daughter Lillie Saint in April 2019, and their second, Piper Rose, in May 2020.
      Fern graduated with a first class honours bachelor’s degree in physiotherapy in 2017.

      The pair began dating in their teens, with Annie admitting it was “love at first sight”.
      They share three sons – Roman, Riaan and Reign – and Annie has admitted to wanting a girl.
      But Annie dumped Walker after Ex on the Beach star Laura Brown claimed she enjoyed romps with the Manchester City player in his £200k Bentley.
      Annie kicked him out of their Cheshire home, but they got back together.
      Walker has since been embroiled in a number of steamy encounters – culminating in a coronavirus lockdown sex party with two hookers in April 2020.

      After claiming talks were at the ‘last stage’, Money Kicks told Sky Sports: “I never thought I would ever fight Floyd. He is the best fighter ever.
      “When I was young, I would collect his ‘The Money Team’ caps.
      “Mayweather’s team asked my team for a meeting. We thought: ‘No way will this happen!’
      “The same day of the meeting, I saw Mayweather saying, ‘I would love to fight Rashed’.
      “He is serious. It is an honour that he has called me out. I thought: ‘This will go viral!'”
      On Instagram, Money Kicks has over two million followers. He lives in a mansion in the UAE that has its own private zoo filled with over 500 exotic animals.
      Because of that, the son of construction mogul Saif Ahmed Belhasa, worth around £4billion, can count the world’s greatest footballers and sports stars as his friends, including Mayweather.
      Inside the private zoo, you’ll find lions, tigers, panthers, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, and even bears.
      Hilariously, he has even named some of them after A-list celebrities and cartoon characters.

      Footballers come in their droves, wowed by Belhasa’s wealth and the opportunity to feed a beast they’d never encounter otherwise.

      In 1944, Italy was under German occupation after the overthrow and arrest of fascist dictator Benito Mussolini.
      Allied forces were pushing up from the South, but German forces were dug in around the mountains surrounding Florence.
      Bill Lanza, from Revere, Massachusetts, was the gunner in a seven-man crew flying a B-25 Mitchell bomber on a mission to destroy a bridge when it was hit by German anti-aircraft fire.
      He miraculously bailed out as the plane came down in flames, and as he landed in a field he was immediately embraced by two young Italian boys.
      One of them was teenager Amerigo Sarri – Maurizio’s father.

      The pilot died in the crash, flying the bomber into a mountain as he tried to allow enough time for the rest of the crew to bail out.
      Two men were captured, and four including Lanza managed to evade the Germans in the Val d’Arno countryside, 200 miles behind enemy lines.
      Lanza and Todd were told to hide in woods by a farmer, where they covered themselves with leaves.
      The farmer went to get Goffredo, Amerigo’s father who was a partisan, which meant he was opposed to the German occupation of the time.
      Without introducing himself, Goffredo immediately brought Lanza a bottle of wine and some cheese and told his new friend to go back into the woods and hide again.
      After sundown, Goffredo went to the spot where Lanza was hiding and walked him to the farm in civilian clothes.
      The remarkable story was later told by John Lanza, nephew of Bill, in a book called Shot Down Over Italy, published in 2010.

      Lanza said, “In the afternoon, about four o’clock, I was hiding in the woods and feeling pretty good because the wine was strong and the cheese was delicious.
      “He (Sarri) was carrying a bag of civilian clothes. I changed from my military clothes to my new white shirt and an oxford grey suit.
      “I gave him my clothes, but kept my shoes.
      “The partisan’s last name was Sarri. That’s all I ever called him.”
      If caught, Lanza would’ve been likely viewed as a spy and could’ve been tortured and killed.
      While Sarri’s granddad could have been shot dead on the spot for helping the enemy.
      Lanza said: “After sundown, Sarri instructed me to follow him to his house.
      “So, in my new civilian clothes, I followed him down a dirt road. He was walking about seventy yards ahead of me.

      “While we were walking, two German trucks loaded with soldiers hurried past us.”
      Sarri took him and Todd to a cave on his land, and Lanza lived there for the next 65 days, as the family brought them pasta, soup and bread.
      The Germans knew the American airmen were being helped by the Italians, and flooded the area with troops.
      Amazingly, the cave Lanza and Todd lived in was only 1oo yards from the Germans’ local HQ.

      Lanza said: “They never knew I was there, but I definitely knew they were there.
      “I could see them doing calisthenics every morning from my cave.
      “I could hear their machine guns going all night.
      “They had a very fast sounding machine gun – much faster than the American ones – and it drove me crazy.
      “We slept on straw mattresses in our cave, but we sometimes washed ourselves and our clothes at a rain basin on the farm.”
      Lanza knew the risks Sarri was taking.
      “When people there got caught helping Americans – it was no questions asked,” said Lanza.
      “There were a lot of atrocities. They killed about 200 that I heard of.”
      Young Amerigo would often drop-in to check on the two pilots.

      Lanza said: “Amerigo was a frequent visitor to the cave.
      “We liked Rigo and I think he liked us. We used to play games. One game was someone slapped your hand in the dark and you had to guess who slapped it.
      “Sounds silly, but we tried to make the best of our circumstances, and had a good time playing games.”
      Two months had passed since the pilots had hurled themselves from their burning plane, and the Germans began to give up their searched and started to pull their soldiers out of the Italian countryside.
      That’s when Goffredo prepared Lanza and Todd’s escape plan.
      He wrote a letter to the German commander telling him he was going to be escorting some miners through town.
      But of course, these were no miners.

      The toughest task between Lanza and Todd’s freedom was crossing a bridge outside the village that was surrounded by Nazis.
      Lanza claimed: “The Germans were in foxholes and they were shooting at planes that were bombing the area.
      “They must have thought we were nuts because bombs and bullets were flying everywhere as we walked by.
      I put my trust in Sarri and he never let me down. Basically, we always trusted each otherBill LanzaShot Down Over Italy
      “They couldn’t be bothered with civilians and we were in regular clothes and looked like refugees.
      “We walked right past the Nazi trucks.”
      Lanza continued: “It is mind- boggling to me that I was able to walk past German soldiers who were looking for me.
      “You can imagine how nervous I was. I put my trust in Sarri and he never let me down. Basically, we always trusted each other.”

      Goffredo had done his duty and taken Lanza and Todd as far as he could.
      After staying in a sub-basement of a Silesian church with hiding Jewish families, the pilots managed to find safety with English soldiers.
      Their ordeal was over, thanks to the Lazio boss’s  grandfather, who later received a letter from the US General Joseph McNarney thanking him for his bravery.
      In 2015, Sarri was asked by Italian newspaper Repubblica about Goffredo’s astonishing act of heroism.
      He said: “He was called Goffredo, he was very proud of a recognition on a White House letterhead.
      “As a partisan, he recovered the pilots of a US plane shot down in Val d’Arno, hid them, and at that time they shot you for less.
      “One was called Bill Lanza, I know because his daughter and nephew wrote us a book.” More

      Possibly the most famous of all modern day hair transplants, Wayne Rooney’s ongoing battle with his barnet has occupied many column inches over the years.

      To his credit, the current Derby boss Rooney has never hidden the fact that he’s undergone several procedures in his bid to beat his baldness, spending a reported £30,000 in the process.
      In 2011, for example, he took to Twitter to proudly declare the start of his treatment and to show the results of the surgery.
      He’s also said to use hair thickening sprays too. And it’s still not working.

      Where do you start with Stephen Ireland’s hair? Or lack of it.

      In his early days as a professional, it was clear he was thinning on top but then around 2006-07, his hair suddenly sprung into life.
      At the time, rumours abounded that it was actually a wig, rather than a transplant.
      But in 2008 the plot, unlike his hair, thickened when he turned out for Manchester City with his head completely shaved.
      Now without a club, the 32-year-old opts for the bald but bearded style, a look which makes his head look upside down.

      So he went for it. Even now, it’s not entirely obvious that it’s worked. Hope he kept the receipt.
