Fulham 0 Crystal Palace 2: Joachim Andersen scores own goal against former club before Munoz seals important win

DANIEL MUNOZ savoured a moment of history for Crystal Palace as they sunk Fulham – and put a halt on their opponents’ European dreams. The energetic Colombian, a product of the hard streets of Medellin, has adapted excellently to life in England since moving over last summer to South London.Daniel Munoz sealed another win on the road for PalaceCredit: PAThe Colombian doubled the Eagles’ lead at Craven CottageCredit: GettyJoachim Andersen netted an unfortunate own goal to give Palace a first half leadCredit: GettyAnd the highlight of his £8million move from Belgian side Genk was a tremendous turn-and-finish that bamboozled poor Fulham defender Calvin Bassey in a feisty London derby. The Eagles – who benefited in the first half from an own goal scored by ex-player Joachim Andersen – celebrated a FOURTH successive top-flight away victory. That had never happened before in 119 years and ironically all of the results have been by 2-0 scorelines. It also reminded Fulham – who had been hoping to use their passports next season for possible European competition – that they need to discover some form of consistency if they wish to stay in the top half.READ MORE ON FOOTBALLOn an unseasonably mild February afternoon in West London, referee Robert Jones chose to take a lenient approach to any full-blooded tackles or niggly challenges. This greatly annoyed Fulham fans, particularly when Chris Richards swiped down home favourite Emile Smith Rowe and no foul was called, allowing Palace to instigate an attack. And there was the time when Will Hughes collided with Bassey but play was permitted to continue. At times, Fulham boss Marco Silva could be seen shaking his head in disbelief that the cards had remained in the ref’s pocket. Most read in FootballBEST FREE BET SIGN UP OFFERS FOR UK BOOKMAKERSAnger towards the official intensified when Palace took the lead on 37 minutes from a Hughes corner, which was bundled in off the side of Andersen’s head, following pressure from Maxence Lacroix in front. It might have been scored in messy fashion but the away fans did not care one jot.Fulham boss Marco Silva regrets ‘cruel’ loss to Man Utd Calls from a Fulham perspective that there had been a push as the corner came over were ignored. And the fact the Danish defender wore Palace colours up until last August’s £30million switch was not lost on anybody.”You’re not fit to referee” was one of the few chants that could be repeated before the watershed.Loud boos echoed around this old arena by the river and Jones was not exactly given a warm reception as he walked off at half-time.It had been a first half of few chances, one that was really devoid of any top-class quality, but ever-present goalkeeper Bernd Leno did pull off two decent saves from Eberechi Eze.Munoz’s goal gave Palace a fifth-consecutive away win in all competitionsCredit: GettyJean-Philippe Mateta had a goal disallowed for offsideCredit: GettyTen minutes into the second half, Palace talisman Jean-Philippe Mateta thought he had scored his 12th league goal this term when he thumped home, latching onto a clever backheel by Eze.But VAR technicians had other ideas and though it was a fractional call, the Frenchman’s trademark booting of the corner flag was all in vain.In the build-up, Smith Rowe had collapsed to the floor in the centre circle due to a calf problem – because it was not a head injury, the visitors did not have to stop play. And soon the former Arsenal midfielder was hobbling off to the treatment room.It was Munoz’s second goal of the season since arriving from GenkCredit: ReutersLacroix was a clear threat for Palace at set-pieces and his header on 61 minutes required a magnificent reflex save from Leno, who has played every Premier League minute this season.Five minutes later and Palace had the second goal that they deserved, the architect being the exceptional Mateta who outrageously glided past several Fulham players on a quick, long-busting counter-attack.READ MORE SUN STORIESMunoz completely fooled with Bassey with his quick feet and then rifled home his shot from a tight angle – his fourth goal for the club.It was a result that edges Palace further away from the drop zone and is the first time they have won consecutive top-flight away London derbies in the same season since beating Wimbledon and Tottenham in 1997-98. Ipswich 1 Tottenham 4: Spurs make it three Premier League wins on the spin as Brennan Johnson scores twice

DJED SPENCE’S case for a possible England call-up is growing stronger by the week. The versatile defender, 24, has been Spurs’ form player over their difficult, injury-ravaged last few months, handling Mo Salah brilliantly in the Carabao Cup in January.Brennan Johnson was hero for Spurs – scoring twice to down Ipswich TownCredit: ReutersJohnson opened the scoring for the away sideCredit: RexIt has led to talk of possible inclusion in Thomas Tuchel’s Three Lions squad. And if the German was watching this performance, which saw Spence net his first Premier League goal to kill off Ipswich’s resistance, he may have found it quite persuasive.Ange Postecoglou, who talked up Spence’s credentials on Friday, saw his side race into a 2-0 lead thanks to a Brennan Johnson double. But given his team’s habit of chucking away leads, the fear was it would happen when Omari Hutchinson curled home before the break.Read more football newsYet in the end England hopeful Spence’s deflected effort ensured a third straight league victory for Spurs, before Dejan Kulusevski’s stunner added some gloss to the scoreline.Meanwhile Kieran McKenna’s Town are now five points adrift in the relegation zone after yet another home humbling. It is now four straight home defeats for the Tractor Boys with 14 goals shipped in the process, leaving their survival prospects looking bleak.Tottenham… or Spurs, or Tottenham Hotspur, whatever the club wishes to be called… can be a curious team under Postecoglou. Most read in FootballThey seem to live in ‘moments’ – modern-day football-speak for spells in games – more than most sides.Emotional ex-Tottenham star Nabil Bentaleb, 30, scores just four minutes into return after suffering cardiac arrestAnd those moments can shift dramatically from exhilarating ones to desperate ones and back again in any game, against any opposition. They survived a bad one in the opening six minutes as Ipswich livewire striker Liam Delap ripped them apart.Delap raced clear and had a shot well-saved by Guglielmo Vicario inside the first 30 seconds.Jaden Philogene’s rebound strike would have gone in had it not hit an offside Hutchinson near the line.Delap then breezed past Archie Gray, restored to the heart of Spurs’ backline in Ben Davies’ absence, and prodded a shot just wide of the far post.Spurs’ scare from the ex-Manchester City man continued when he flicked Kalvin Phillips’ free-kick onto the post before it was hacked away. But then came a moment of devastating brilliance from Postecoglou’s side.Gray, deployed at right centre-back with Kevin Danso switched to the left, lofted an inch-perfect ball over the top to Son Heung-min.Omari Hutchinson got the home team back in it in the first haldCredit: AFPHowever, Djed Spence killed off all hope of a comebackCredit: RexThe South Korean still had plenty to do and proceeded to fool Ben Godfrey with a clever step-over, before fizzing the ball across the six-yard area for Johnson to convert.Johnson and Son’s double act was repeated on 26 minutes as Rodrigo Bentancur sent the latter clear down the left.Son cut in and was afforded an age to pick out Wales star Johnson, back in the starting line-up for the first time since January’s win at Tamworth due to a calf issue, to slot home.In between the two clinical strikes, Danso had pulled off an audacious Cruyff-turn to get himself out of trouble when last man, to the delight of the travelling fans. The home supporters, meanwhile, had gone quiet, but their enthusiasm was reignited when their side grabbed one back out of nothing – and in style.Phillips played the ball out to former Spurs kid Jack Clarke, whose first-time ball was met with a beautiful, first-time strike from Hutchinson that found the corner.Dejan Kulusevski put the gloss on a fine away performance by SpursCredit: GettyKulusevski celebrates scoring his side’s fourth goalCredit: PALuke Woolfenden, on for Godfrey at half-time, thought he had levelled around the hour mark but he had wandered offside when heading in from close range.READ MORE SUN STORIESFormer Norwich man James Maddison was booed every time he touched the ball but it was his dancing feet which teed up Spence to find the net via Woolfenden’s hefty deflection. If the game was not up then, it certainly was seven minutes later when Kulusevski curled in off the post before roaring in relieved celebration. Arsenal player ratings: Ricardo Calafiori hooked for constantly losing the ball as Mikel Merino looks lost as a striker

MYLES Lewis-Skelly’s second red card of 2025 appeared to put the final nail in Arsenal’s title dreams and any chances of them catching Liverpool. The Gunners simply didn’t turn up and failed to respond to Jarrod Bowen’s opener on the brink of half-time.Jarrod Bowen gave the visitors the lead with a diving headerCredit: PAMyles Lewis-Skelly was handed his second red card of the seasonMikel Arteta’s side remain eight points behind table toppers LiverpoolAnd Liverpool fans will breathe a sigh of relief given their recent dip in form as Arsenal remain EIGHT points behind Arne Slot’s men.The Hammers’ wall stood firm as Arsenal registered just two shots on target before Lewis-Skelly’s last-man foul on Mohammed Kudus was upgraded to a red after ref Craig Pawson went to the monitor. Mikel Arteta looked heartbroken to see the 18-year-old – who had only been on the pitch for 17 minutes – given his marching orders again – just weeks after he was sent off at Wolves. That one was rescinded by the Prem a few days later, but today’s incident won’t be, as midfielder Mikel Merino looked lost as a makeshift No 9.READ MORE ON ARSENALHere SunSport’s Charlie Wyett rates every Arsenal player from the Emirates Stadium.DAVID RAYA – 5Declan Rice indicated to Raya that he expected him to come off his line to deal with the cross for the goal. Guilty of delivering an abysmal cross late in the game when Arsenal needed a bit of quality.RICCARDO CALAFIORI – 4A poor performance. Given the nod ahead of Lewis-Skelly but badly at fault for the opening goal as he did not get close enough to Aaron Wan-Bissaka who delivered the cross to Bowen. Arsenal 0 West Ham 1: Gunners’ Premier League title hopes all-but over after Bowen goal and ANOTHER red card

WHAT a difference a striker makes. And if Mikel Arteta needed any more convincing, that is NOT Mikel Merino, as Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes took another fatal dagger to the heart.Myles Lewis-Skelly was sent off for denying a goalscoring opportunityCredit: ReutersJarrod Bowen celebrates his first goal since returning from injuryCredit: GettyArsenal’s title hopes suffered a huge blowCredit: APWith two match-winning goals off the bench to help the injury-stricken Gunners past Leicester last weekend, 28-year-old midfielder Merino was given a first start of his senior career as a No.9.At the King Power, it worked a treat. But we now know that to be a fluke.Across 90 minutes at the Emirates against West Ham, for all his effort, the lumbering Spaniard looked out of his depth.Down the other end, Hammers forward Jarrod Bowen gave Merino a painful No.9 101 – one chance, one goal, with the instincts of a top class Prem predator in the 44th minute to take all three points.READ MORE ON ARSENALMerino will be criticised, but this was an all-round uninspiring display from Arteta’s men – inviting Liverpool to go 11 points clear to basically wrap things up.Injuries may have left them without a centre forward, but their title chase should not be fading this badly, and it will only get worse if this is all Arsenal can muster. It also helps to have 11 men on the pitch, another of their Achilles heels this season. In the 1-0 win at Wolves on January 25, it was a hugely controversial dismissal of Myles Lewis-Skelly by ref Michael Oliver, one that was overturned days later. Most read in FootballCASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITSThis one, however, was pretty clear cut, given by Craig Pawson in the 73rd minute after a VAR monitor review, Lewis-Skelly – 17 minutes after coming on – tripping Mohammed Kudus on the halfway line as last man. This was a welcome reprieve for Graham Potter, who continues his fine managerial form at this ground – a fourth win in five visits – and a first Prem win in five for the East Londoners. ‘I need to f—ing change’ – Arsenal’s David Raya reveals he was at ‘my lowest’ after ‘worst game as a professional’West Ham just love bursting the Arsenal bubble – their 2-0 victory here last season ultimately costing Arteta the title. It may well do again.Despite Arsenal’s lack of firepower, Potter reverted to a five at the back in search of a first Prem away of his Hammers tenure – and a first for the club this calendar year.Rush Green product Ollie Scarles, 19, got his first top-flight start at left wing-back, tasked with keeping another teenage sensation in Ethan Nwaneri, 17, quiet.James Ward-Prowse was also thrown in from the off – attempting to revive his West Ham career after being shipped out on loan to Nottingham Forest in the summer under Julen Lopetegui. But all eyes were on Merino. In true Arteta tight-lipped fashion, he hinted in the build-up that he had been trialling a few down-the-middle alternatives in training during the week.So to opt for Merino from the off was bold, not that Arteta had much choice given Raheem Sterling’s disasterclass of a display at the King Power had rightly won him a place on the bench for this one. What a surreal part of Merino’s career. Deemed a midfield flop at Newcastle in 2017, he arrived in North London in the summer as a matured Euros winner with Spain with a point to prove in England.Six months later, he is leading the line for an injury-hit Arsenal in pursuit of a long-awaited Prem title. A daunting prospect, but no one, it seems, has told Merino that.Fearless in his approach, he was anywhere and everywhere, covering every blade of grass, perhaps too much at times. The exuberance and excitement of a dog on his first-ever trip to the beach with a crazed smile and tongue flapping in the wind. For a while, it proved effective. Up against big lump Max Kilman he won an early flick-on, smothered a loose ball and almost nicked a ball off Alphonse Areola with a well-timed press. But the early enthusiasm and impact quickly faded. While his timing darts into the box against a tiring Foxes back line was inch-perfect, on this occasion he was consistently a yard or two short.Leandro Trossard’s whipped delivery across the face of goal had Kilman stumped, something Merino had not anticipated, and shortly after could only get a toe to Thomas Partey’s angled cross.Merino remained persistent, blazing over at the near post while straying offside. His obvious limitations as a centre forward growing ever clearer inside 45 minutes at the Emirates. What Arteta could not have expected was such a resolute West Ham defence, one that had imitated a bunch of comedy circus clowns last week in their 1-0 home defeat to Brentford. With such a solid base, Potter’s boys were able to be braver on the ball – Aaron Wan-Bissaka galloping into space left by Riccardo Calafiori down the right and cutting the ball back.A player of Bowen’s quality should have found the target, instead shanking wide.A warning shot for the hosts that they did not learn from – conceding from a replica attack with the half almost up and weary legs on show as Jurrien Timber lost the ball just outside West Ham’s box.Bowen collected and carried and set Wan-Bissaka away, yet it was Calafiori’s passive defending that allowed him to run from the halfway line and into a crossing position.Fingers were being pointed all around as Bowen headed in from a few yards out. Gabriel should have cut out the danger, but it was Rice who had lost his marker Bowen at the crucial moment – having covered ground to run back with his old East London pal.An anxiety-inducing half watched with glee on Merseyside, but with gritted teeth in North London.Merino continued to flounder after the break, mistiming a jump from a Nwaneri cross, yet Arteta had no one to replace him with.READ MORE SUN STORIESBut changes were made just 10 minutes into the second half. Rice – to the delight of the taunting away end – did not look happy to be hauled off for Oleksandr Zinchenko, despite his ineffective afternoon.Calafiori also made way for Lewis-Skelly, but the 18-year-old was soon back down the tunnel, scuppering any hope of late comeback – not that it ever looked like coming, even with eight minutes of injury time.
