Chelsea player ratings: Exciting Jadon Sancho a thorn in Palace’s side but Pedro Neto lets himself down in final third

CHELSEA squandered yet more points after Crystal Palace came from behind at Selhurt Park. The Blues opened the scoring through main man Cole Palmer and looked set to bounce back from consecutive defeats. It was yet more dropped points for ChelseaCredit: ReutersBut a mistake on the ball from Palmer allowed Palace in to equalise with Eberechi Eze setting up Jean-Philippe Mateta. With Chelsea now without a win in three league matches, this is how Jack Rosser rated the players. Robert Sanchez – 6Back in the side after Filip Jorgensen started the defeat to Ipswich.Sanchez is always under the microscope but did well when it came to controlling things in his area, making some saves and claiming the ball well from corners.READ MORE ON CHELSEA There is a lot of work still to be done on his distribution though. Twice attempted balls out found Crystal Palace shirts. There was not much he could have done for Mateta’s goal.Malo Gusto – 6With Reece James back from injury and watching from the bench, Gusto would have wanted a perfect performance. The Frenchman looked to be delivering that until, late on, he lost track of Eze in the box and the England man squared for the leveller. Most read in FootballJosh Acheampong – 7The teenager settled quickly on his first Premier League start. He was solid at the back alongside Colwill and, even more impressively, was quick and positive in possession, picking out a couple of smart passes from the back.Levi Colwill made defensive mistakesCredit: AlamyLevi Colwill – 5Colwill looked steady for the most part but was dragged out of position when it counted, chasing Ismailia Sarr and leaving the back four all over the place in the build up to Mateta’s goal.He was also booked for a rather reckless challenge on Cheick Doucoure and can perhaps count himself lucky the referee was not sent for a second look.Marc Cucurella – 6Struggled to cling on to Palace’s electric right-back Daniel Munoz at times.Munoz was given a lot of time and space to cause problems down the right by Cucurella, who can count himself lucky he was not punished.Going the other way Cucurella showed plenty of energy, often pinching the ball from those in red and blue.Moises Caicedo – 6A quiet game from the former Brighton man. If Chelsea are to get back to their best they need a midfield that can ensure they continue to dominate games when on top. There were too many occasions today when Crystal Palace were given a sniff – Caicedo at his best stamps that out.Enzo Fernandez continues to step upCredit: GettyEnzo Fernandez – 7With Romeo Lavia still injured, Fernandez has stepped up in recent weeks. The Argentine was assured in midfield and cute and creative in possession, looking to move the ball forward whenever he got the chance.Pedro Neto – 5The Portuguese brings so much promise with his pace but often lets himself down in the final third.Too often a good run ends in him losing the ball due to indecision or going down too easily.Cole Palmer – 7The former Manchester City man was in devastating form once again.A fine opener was almost quickly followed by a second goal while he probably should have had a pair of assists before the break if it was not for a superb Chris Richards tackle and some wasteful finishing from Jackson.Jadon Sancho was a menace down the leftCredit: PAJadon Sancho – 8Made the opening goal with a wonderful bit of skill, letting the ball run through his legs to leave Chris Richards stranded before charging down the flank to tee up Palmer.Sancho remained a thorn in Palace’s side on his wing, delivering a few dangerous balls and leaving defenders rather embarrassed.Nicolas Jackson – 5Jackson’s wastefulness will go down as perhaps the single reason Chelsea did not leave with three points. The Senegal striker should have doubled their lead not long after Palmer had put them ahead.Free at the far post after a free-kick, Jackson could not even hit the target and sent a scrappy effort into the side netting. There were further chances, one laid on by Palmer, but he could not make them count.READ MORE SUN STORIESSubstitutesMarc Guiu (on for Jackson, 81’) – n/aNoni Madueke (on for Sancho, 86’) – n/aNicolas Jackson was wasteful in front of goalCredit: Rex More

Southampton 0 Brentford 5: Abysmal Saints destined for the drop with Ivan Juric’s side ten points adrift of safety

IVAN JURIC may as well resign now or start planning for life with Southampton in the Championship. The Croatian boss has a break clause this summer in the 18-month contract he signed after taking over from axed Russell Martin.Yoanne Wissa, left, Bryan Mbeumo, centre, and Kevin Schade, right, got on the scoresheetCredit: ReutersKevin Schade broke the deadlockCredit: ReutersKeane Lewis-Potter added a fourth for BeesCredit: ReutersWissa compounded Saints’ misery late onCredit: ReutersSo if his continued involvement with Southampton depends on their Premier League status he can forget that. Man City 4 West Ham 1: Haaland back in the groove with two goals in thrashing to increase pressure on Lopetegui

NORMAL service still far from resumed…but a City stroll and Erling Haaland through the 20-goal barrier again will certainly do for now.And after the two months of hell Pep Guardiola’s four-time champions endured before the Festive period, that is a more than acceptable start to the New Year.Manchester City comfortably beat West Ham at the Etihad StadiumCredit: GettySavinho forced in the opener with his deflected crossCredit: ReutersErling Haaland hit a brace for the hostsCredit: PAPhil Foden put the match beyond West Ham in the second halfCredit: AFPAdmittedly nowhere near the five-star, blow-everyone-away team we have come to expect just yet. But a pretty decent start to 2025, nonetheless. Two goals from an increasingly back-in-the-groove Haaland – that’s 21 now in a supposedly dodgy campaign – and two more assists from increasingly vital Savinho. You can probably make that three, in fact, given the fact it was the Brazilian’s would-be cross which Vladimir Coufal turned into his own net for the opener, actually.Certainly, though, a growing sense that City – slowly, steadily but surely – are edging in the right direction once more with almost half the season to go.READ MORE ON FOOTBALLEven though there are, in fairness, few bigger football certainties than a home win over the Hammers – in all bar one of the past 15 meetings here, in fact.So no great surprise to see another notch on the bedpost after the latest clash either…even though the visitors did have some cause to feel aggrieved as they headed back south. Not so much for blowing a couple of chances, but more the clanger that denied Crys Summerville a run on goal after Manuel Akanji had the ball nicked off his toe.Still nearly half the length of the field to go admittedly, but no covering defender in sight as the striker set off. Most read in FootballCASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITSYet instead of letting the move pan out, then leaving VAR Graham Scott to make the call, ref Michael Salisbury blew. And considering no amount of television replays could deliver a unanimous verdict, there was every reason for manager Julen Lopetegui’s touchline tantrum.Ludek Miklosko gets emotional as he addresses West Ham fans at 2023 Conference League finalNiclas Fullkrug got one back for West HamCredit: ReutersPep Guardiola will be happy to see his team win back-to-backCredit: GettyThe defeat has heaped more pressure on Hammers manager Julen LopeteguiCredit: GettyBy then the Spaniard’s side were already chasing the game – thanks to a City opener that was more down to fortune than flair.Savinho certainly wasn’t planning to shoot as he cut in from the left, trying instead to pick out Haaland in the middle.Yet when Vladimir Coufal raced over to block, the ball clipped off his outstretched leg, flew over stranded keeper Alphonse Areola and into the far corner.City will no doubt claim they were due a bit of good luck, given they had precious of it during that shocking run before beating Leicester a week ago.But even after getting their noses in front, Guardiola’s men didn’t exactly play like the serial title winners they are – well not for another half hour at least.Indeed, there was good cause to argue a one-goal advantage at the break would have been flattering. Doubling it three minutes beforehand certainly was. That came courtesy of Haaland’s opener, and few of the previous 19 he had notched in all competitions this term were easier.Once again Savinho was at the heart of it, with a sweeping, searching, sensational cross beyond the far post – which the striking Viking rose unopposed for a point-blank nod-in.Cruel on the Hammers, for sure. But effectively a game-clincher for City, because you could all but see the wind – and hope – drain from the visitors at that second. And so, indeed, it proved. Although that was little excuse for some of the kamikaze defending that allowed City to add another two in three manic minutes after the break. Not so much with the first of them, admittedly…that was more down to Savinho being, well, savvy in spotting Haaland’s run behind Max Kilman and a slide-rule assist. It came with the most delightful of dinks over Areola – and as far as a contest, that really was that.A second successive win for the first time since October – what an incredible statistic that is for the champions – signed and sealed with over half an hour still to play. And with the shackles off, the pressure released and the chance to cut loose, Pep’s prize guys wasted no time in bagging a fourth.Although strictly speaking West Ham played as big a part in the assist as Kevin De Bruyne’s final ball, with a blueprint in cut-your-own-throat defending. That was all you could call Kudus’ pass to Edson Alvarez – a simple ten yard ball – which went behind his team-mate and sent De Bruyne away. The Belgian could probably have done the business himself some 12 yards from goal. Instead he rolled it to Phil Foden on his right and he certainly did.At least Niclas Fullkrug finally gave the Hammers some reward for their efforts when he stuck out a leg for the neat finish Tomas Soucek’s delivery deserved.READ MORE SUN STORIESBut in the land of small mercies, it was very much the smallest crumb of comfort for Lopetegui, back in the firing line once more after last week’s five-goal hiding off Liverpool. For Guardiola, though, there is certainly a chink of sunlight peeping through those dark clouds at last… More
