Arsenal 1 Chelsea 0: Gunners survive huge six-pointer to tighten grip on second place as Blues sweat on Champions League

MIKEL ARTETA this week said he was determined for Arsenal to be the best of the rest this season as Liverpool stroll to the Premier League title. They are on course to do just that, especially when “the rest” are as atrocious and as hot-headed as Chelsea are right now.Stand-in striker Mikel Merino gave Arsenal a deserved lead from a corner inside 20 minutesMarc Cucurella nearly punished a howler from David Raya on the brink of half-timeRobert Sanchez denied Merino from a second in the 60th minuteChelsea remain winless in seven games against ArsenalThe Gunners came into this one without a win in their last three league games, 15 points off Arne Slot’s rampaging Reds and in danger of being dragged into a top four scrap. Those nerves have settled now, nine points above Enzo Maresca’s Blues in fourth and four points above Nottingham Forest in third thanks to Mikel Merino’s 20th minute Emirates winner. It seems boss Arteta is content with a third-successive runners-up spot this term, something he sees as a real achievement given their damaging injury record this campaign. This was not Arsenal at their fluid best, not that they needed to be against a Chelsea outfit without an injured Cole Palmer – and it desperately showed.READ MORE FOOTBALL NEWSBut for now, Arteta’s men have bigger fish to fry in the Champions League – welcoming Real Madrid to North London for a mouth-watering quarter final tie next month.Chelsea meanwhile produced a performance worthy of the Europa Conference League they hope to win comfortably come May.Do not let the score line fool you – they were never, ever in this one.Chasing shadows for large parts, they spent most of it kicking lumps out of anything that moved and aimlessly arguing with officials, lucky not to be down to 10 men after Wesley Fofana’s blatant first half stamp on Declan Rice. Most read in FootballCASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITSA real sign of the times, and a sign of how much work Enzo Maresca still has to do with this group. For the neutrals, this had arguably the most important element to a London derby: needle.Mikel Arteta walks out of Sky Sports interview moments after Arsenal lose further ground in Premier League title raceThe visitors provided most of it, starting before a ball was even kicked by winning the toss and forcing the hosts to unusually kick away from the Clock End in the first half. Mind games?Chelsea’s approach after that smacked of a team who knew they would be inferior on the ball, so decided to be horrible b******s off it in the hope of disrupting their opponents, kicking lumps out of anything in red.Marc Cucurella was at his whinging, crowd-provoking best from the first whistle, while Enzo Fernandez led from the front when it came to niggly fouls and dramatic collapses to the turf. Then Fofana got in on it, perhaps a bit too much. The Frenchman bundled Rice to the floor and proceeded to plant his studs into the back of the England midfielder’s thigh.Rice reacted, squaring up to the offender. Arteta was frothing at the mouth. VAR took a less dramatic view on their review. Fofana somehow got away with no punishment at all.Declan Rice clashed with Wesley Fofana after the Chelsea star’s high bootArsenal were not exactly saints either. Thomas Partey got away with leaving one or two studs on the ankle of Pedro Neto. And Gabriel enjoyed a good old South American coming together with Enzo Fernandez. But still, in footballing terms, Arsenal were dominant. Chelsea were pathetically passive. It did not help that their front six players were all under six foot, trying to gain some momentum and territory against a trio of giants like Partey, Gabriel and William Saliba. The recalled Robert Sanchez in goal was at his nervy, frantic worst, passing straight out to Gabriel Martinelli and then parrying the Brazilian’s shot almost into the path of Leandro Trossard.Down the right, Jurrien Timber jinked around Cucurella in the box and squared for Martinelli but for a well-timed Fofana interception. After that, it was comical watching Chelsea attempt to clear.Benoit Badiashile deflected onto Colwill, forcing Sanchez to stop an own goal, and a second attempt to hoof it left a ball-print bruise on the face of Reece James as Rice then blazed over. The opening was inevitable, but the source of it was a surprise. Before this one, Arsenal – the corner kings – had failed to score from their last 51 deliveries. But they made No.52 count. Martin Odegaard whipped it to the near post and Merino flicked up and over everybody else into the far side-netting. His fourth goal in seven in all competitions as a No.9.This game should have been over at half time with Chelsea stinking the place out and Arsenal creating chance after chance. Enzo Maresca spent most of the first half slumped on his knees. And yet they almost nicked an underserving leveller from a David Raya howler, spilling a Cucurella volley and watching the ball trickle just past his far post. Not that this was enough to rally Maresca’s men at the break, instead looking more interested in some more of the dark arts. Arteta must have secretly been quite impressed, having taught his own players most of those tricks over the past few years.Neto picked up a yellow for dissent. Fofana was finally cautioned for delaying an Arsenal throw-in.At the other end, Arsenal were probing. READ MORE SUN STORIESMartinelli crossed for Merino whose eyes lit up only for his volley to be well punched away by Sanchez.Arsenal are the best of the rest. Chelsea are still scrambling finding their place below them. More

Fulham 2 Tottenham 0: Late goals move hosts within three points of Champions League with Spurs level with 16th

RYAN SESSEGNON looked almost embarrassed as his worldie blew old side Tottenham to smithereens. The 24-year-old curled brilliantly into the corner shortly after coming on, adding to a smart opener from fellow sub Rodrigo Muniz.Ryan Sessegnon curls a brilliant shot beyond VicarioCredit: GettySessegnon refused to celebrate against his former clubCredit: PAIt capped a brilliant 200th Premier League game in charge for Fulham boss Marco Silva, whose team are up to eighth and remain very much in the hunt for Europe. While this was a FIFTEENTH league defeat of the season for Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs, whose dismal league campaign continues to plumb new depths.Sessegnon was sold as a teenager by Fulham to Spurs for £25million back in 2019.Spurs hoped they had landed one of the most exciting young English players in the country.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLBut sadly for the winger, injuries decimated his career in North London, reducing him to just 57 games and three goals in five years at the club.Spurs even gave up their option to keep a further season last year, allowing him to walk away for free and rejoin the club that made him.In truth, his fitness troubles have continued back at Fulham, as he has started just one Prem game for Silva. But this was by far and away his best moment back for the Whites, even if he refused to celebrate his wonderstrike out of respect for his old team. Most read in FootballBEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERSRodrigo Muniz celebrates handing Fulham the leadCredit: AFPThe Fulham striker’s shot beat Guglielmo VicarioCredit: GettyThe Sessegnon sub-plot rescued a dull game which for the most part had the feel of an end-of-season clash with nothing riding on it.That was half understandable from a Tottenham perspective because, even with ten games left to play, their Premier League campaign is going nowhere and it is all about the Europa League. It explained why Ange Postecoglou made seven changes, starting Archie Gray in midfield for the first time in the Prem and deploying 19-year-old loanee Mathys Tel wide left.Fulham had a little more urgency about them, with Silva’s side still in the hunt for continental qualification. But were it not for the antics of Cristian Romero, plus a penalty being turned down that should have been given, the first half would have been a non-event.Romero was starting his third game in a week having played just 15 minutes in the four months before that due to a toe injury, followed by a more significant quad problem. The Argentine is box-office, whether it be crunching into tackles, playing defence-splitting passes or bawling at other players – opposing ones and his own team-mates alike. You could hear him screaming at Djed Spence, who came through the Fulham academy, to get back into position inside the first eight minutes. It was another frustrating afternoon for Ange PostecoglouCredit: PAThen he was wagging his finger at Willian after taking out the Brazilian veteran on the edge of the area, but somehow ref Andy Madley waved play on.Postecoglou will have held his breath for a second when his talismanic centre-back stayed down on the turf clutching his knee after making a vital clearance from an Antone Robinson, but fortunately he was OK to continue.Romero’s best moment, at least from a Fulham point-of-view, came when he met his match taking on Calvin Bassey, who sent him flying with a powerful shrug-off.The spot-kick flash point had come earlier, midway through the first period, as Raul Jimenez fell to the deck when leaping for a cross thanks to Spence’s shove in the back.Jimenez’s drop was a little theatrical – and perhaps that was what saved Spurs and Spence – but even so, Madley looked to have got that one wrong.Tottenham are at their best under Postecoglou when they are bold and aggressive. Both those qualities were lacking in the opening 45 so it was little surprise when the Aussie made two half-times subs.He hauled off the ineffective Yves Bissouma and Brennan Johnson – for the second league game running at the break – and replaced them with Lucas Bergvall and skipper Son Heung-min.The duo instantly made Spurs better, looking sharp with their passing and movement. Yet still the goalmouth action was at a premium. That was until the 69th minute when Solanke should have given the visitors the lead but his reactions were just too slow.Bernd Leno had palmed Mathys Tel’s curling shot into the path of James Maddison, who chested it back to Solanke but the England striker could only fire over.It proved to be a costly miss as nine minutes later, the hosts took the lead, with their own sun pair, Muniz and Adama Traore, playing a vital role. The latter did well to keep a high ball alive and give it to Andreas Pereira, who cut it back for Muniz to find the corner.READ MORE SUN STORIESSessegnon then came on in the 87th minute, serenaded by chants of “he left ‘cause you’re s***” by taunting Fulham fans in the direction of the away support. The forward then finished the game off for good by chasing down a long ball that Ben Davies failed to clear, before bending the ball into the far corner. Celtic 2 Rangers 3: Ferguson’s Gers are UNRECOGNISABLE from Clement’s flops as he makes job pitch

CAN you see a difference now, Brendan?Because there it was, out there at Celtic Park in an Old Firm derby, staring you in the face.Hamza Igamane dcelebrates his stunning late winnerCredit: GettyBarry Ferguson shows his delight at full-timeCredit: ReutersMo Diamonde marks his goal with ‘gun’ celebrationCredit: Willie VassNicolas Raskin laps up his early openerCredit: PAThe Celtic boss may have thought the Barry Ferguson Rangers had all the same hallmarks as the one Philippe Clement left behind. But the truth is, it’s unrecognisable. After this humbling defeat, the Celtic boss must accept that now.Clement, of course, enjoyed a 3-0 derby triumph at Ibrox back in January and that didn’t do him any good in the long run.But you now wonder if the manner of this sensational result can propel Ferguson into the dugout for keeps as his full-time replacement.Incoming take-over supremo Andrew Cavenagh was at Celtic Park to see all this unfold, as he was at Ibrox last Thursday night to see Fenerbahce sent packing. The smart money has always been on the US investors bringing in their own man when they get hold of the keys to Ibrox. But never-say-die results like these cannot be ignored. Most read in FootballCeltic showed spirit of their own to fight back from being 2-0 down to make it 2-2.But the last gasp drama belonged to the visitors who claimed the three points in some style.Hamza Igamane’s wonder strike in the dying minutes of normal time showed that Ferguson’s team don’t give up.There was controversy when that goal went in, ugly scenes after Rangers subs Vaclac Cerny and Nedim Bajrami squirted their water bottles into the Celtic supporters as they sprinted up the touchline to celebrate. That sparked real anger with irate fans punching the away dugout with cops rushing to the scene. But when the dust settled, the frustration of the vast majority of Celtic fans will come from the way their heroes allowed this game to slip away after they battled their way back into it.Ferguson epitomised EVERYTHING that was good about Rangers yesterday. The club’s one-time captain couldn’t have put any more into the game had he been out on the park in his old No6 jersey.Reo Hatate celebrates after equalisingCredit: PADaizen Maeda had got Celtic back into the gameCredit: Willie VassAt times, you questioned if he was too worked up and too hyper with referee Steven McLean booking him in the first-half.But the men in light blue mirrored that passion and pride in the shirt. The 2400 away supporters probably didn’t expect such a dynamic performance.Just as Rodgers couldn’t have seen this coming either. His men have been outstanding this season and will rightly lift their latest title in the next few weeks. They’ve been far and away the best team in the country. But that must have made this all the more galling.Nico Raskin’s goal to make it 1-0 after only four was a flicked header from a corner which caught every one of his defenders sleeping. But the second strike from Diomande?Wow, the space he was allowed inside the box was criminal from the champions’ point of view.Celtic did have efforts themselves before get break – Reo Hatate bringing out the best in Jack Butland with a shot from distance, with the ex-England No1 also denying Maik Nawrocki. But overall Rangers were well worth their two-goal lead.It should have been better, though. The opportunity Cerny had to score into an open goal on 16 minutes was massive.Kasper Schmeichel literally passed straight to him and was out of his box.But when the chance came, he just didn’t trust his right foot and chose to dribble forward when all he had to do was hit he unguarded target. At this level, that’s not good enough. But that’s the message Rodgers would have been given his side at the interval. That what they were showing was nowhere near what was required. He knew he had to change his line-up, though. The Celts boss recognised he wasn’t getting enough from winger Nicolas Kuhn, who was miles off it, and wasted no time in taking him off and replacing him with Adam Idah.It was decisive, pro-active management when the team needed it most. The switch saw Maeda shifted from striker to left winger and suddenly there was a whole new look to the Celtic team.Scoring within two minutes of the restart altered the mood around the stadium and turned the anxiety of the home support into belief.Jota did brillianly to set it up with the Japanese frontman out jumping James Tavernier to nod home at the back stick. It was at that point Ferguson realised he had to do something himself to help his own players. His back-five briefly became a back-four until he took Leon Balogun off and replaced him with Robin Propper. Tavernier was then moved into the right of midfield with Dujon Sterling asked to do a job in central defence. With their tails up, Celtic were a different team.It felt inevitable they’d get the next goal and level the game and the equaliser arrived in 74 minutes. It was also no real surprise it came down Rangers’ left channel that Propper was meant to be protecting. But what a finish from Hatate to beat Butland after Luke McCowan slid him in.At that point it felt certain would go on and win. They had time on their side with Rangers looking physically exhausted going into the closing stages. But Ferguson’s side had different ideas.Igamane had plenty to do after a rare mistake at the back from Cameron Carter-Vickers. But it didn’t look that way.,READ MORE SUN STORIESHis shot flew into the roof of the net to have the away fans wild behind the one they stood behind.Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page More
