Ex Liverpool, West Ham and Charlton star Paul Konchesky now owns a pie and mash cafe since hanging up his boots

WHEN planning for a life after football, maybe it’s best to think with your stomach rather than your head. That’s what ex Charlton and Liverpool star Paul Konchesky, now 39, did when he took over a cafe in Brentwood, Essex in 2015.
Paul Konchesky now runs his own pie and mash cafeCredit: Splash News
Former Charlton left-back Konchesky opened Konch’s Kafe in 2015 in Essex
The former Premier League left-back renamed the site Konch’s Kafe, and started selling traditional East End grub like pie and mash and hasn’t looked back since.
And making sure he’s keeping it in the family, Konchesky has got his mum Carol in to run her son’s operation.
An experienced chef, she used to cook in the kitchen of the Royal Oak pub in Essex.
    LOVES HIS PIES
Pie and mash is something that reminds the two-cap England international of his youth days as a trainee with the Addicks, even if his food-intake wasn’t quite fitting for a wannabe pro footballer.
Konchesky told the Daily Mail: “There was this pie-and-mash shop next to our school in Dagenham.
“Every Tuesday we’d all have mash and liquor for a pound in a takeaway cup.
“Every Friday it’d be proper pie, mash and liquor, with jellied eels. And a cream soda. Without fail.
“I used to be a right dumpling with a big fat face. I was quite tubby when I had my first fitness test at Charlton.
“I was in the first team at 16 with John Robinson and that, getting crates of beer on to the team bus. And on the way home we’d stop for fish and chips.”
Konch’s Kafe has been a big success for Konchesky since he retiredCredit: Rex Features

Now a picture of health,  and even completing the London Marathon in three hours 51 minutes after hanging up his boots, Konchesky resists the temptation of chowing down on pies.
But he often pops in and greets customers, who love to quiz him about his football career.
Occasionally, he’ll chip in in the kitchen, making teas and coffees for his clientele too.
FREE BETS: GET OVER £2,000 IN SIGN UP OFFERS HERE

    WHAT’S ON THE MENU?
The menu at Konch’s Kafe is vast, and offers everything you’ll need for a decent price.
Cockney favourites – pie ‘n’ mash start at a reasonable £3.90, while if you want to add some jellied eels to the dish with a bit of liquor, you’ll pay £6.40.
But if you don’t fancy that, there’s breakfast options, including the Mega Feast with two eggs, sausage, two bacon, black pudding, mushrooms, chips, beans or tomatoes for £6.25.
For lunch, there are jacket potatoes and various sandwiches, and recent specials have included beef stew with dumpling and creamy potato for just £4.75, as well as a chicken curry with rice and naan for a fiver.
However, it’s the pie and mash that’s getting customers through the door and keeping them happy.
A boyhood West Ham fan, Konchesky fell in love with the Hammers and that East End delicacy thanks to his grandfather, who settled in England from Poland during World War II.
The menu at Konch’s Kafe offers everything you’ll want
A beef stew was recently on the special’s board at Konch’s Kafe

    GETTING SHIRTY
And anyone who visits Konch’s Kafe will be taken by their surroundings – framed shirts from various opponents Konchesky has faced during his action-packed career.
A West Ham No 3 shirt with his name on takes centre stage, there’s a signed sketch featuring his hero Julian Dicks, a signed England shirt, as well as a photo of tough defender taking on Teddy Sheringham.
“I’ve always collected shirts: Henry, Vieira, Gazza, Ravanelli, Ronaldo, Scholes,” he said.
“I’ve got an England shirt from John Barnes, who gave it to me when we were together at Charlton.
“He signed it, ‘Remember me when you’re famous’. They’re all dirty. I’ve never washed any of them.”
Clearly with his fingers in many pies, you’ll be thankful that Konchesky’s hands aren’t as dirty as his shirts when you pop in for your next pie fix.
    THE REVIEWS ARE IN
You won’t be surprised to know that it’s scored five out of five on TripAdvisor’s site t he time of writing.
Mandy R wrote: “Love this cafe not just because of the pie and mash but all the food is yummy and the staff are always helpful and a good laugh. They look after everyone, no ones ever alone at Konchs.”
While Samuel A declared: “Very nice staff, very nice atmosphere with the pictures on the walls of ex west ham players and football history! The pies are a must! superb value!”
And wendybrooks07 called Konch’s ‘best pie and mash in Brentwood’, adding: “Traditional Pie and Mash and liquor is just great from here – delicous and worth trying – my favourite.”

Harry Kane’s amazing car collection features British motors, like Range Rover, Jaguar and Bentley

TRUST our Harry.England captain and Spurs star Kane, 27, really does wear his heart on his sleeve when it comes to his country, putting in some inspired performances on the pitch for the Three Lions.
Harry Kane believes in the best of British when it comes to his car collectionCredit: The Sun
And if you look closely at his car collection, you’ll see he likes to keep it British too.
The Spurs striker believes the best is ‘Made in England’, preferring to ride in cars made by Range Rover, Bentley and Jaguar – all made on our shores.
Family man Harry loves to travel in comfort and style in a sporty Autobiography from Land Rover worth around £99k, and also drives a roomy F-PACE which starts at a modest £35k.
But when he feels the need for speed, his Continental GT Supersports costing around £212k is just the ticket to get him to and from training at the blink of an eye.
Three Lions hero Kane drives a Jaguar F-PACE which starts at a modest £35kCredit: The Sun

“Just to be associated with that British stamp is something that I’m proud of,” Kane said.
“I pretty much love that Jag. It’s not too big, not too small, it fits our little daughter and the dogs.
“It’s a family car with a sporty edge. It’s not like you’re embarrassed to drive it as a dad. You’re happy to drive it. It looks nice and it’s not too expensive. It’s been great for me so far.”
After a hard session on the training ground, most footballers prefer to stretch their legs in a comfy SUV.
Harry confessed he was no different and the extra space is crucial.
After a game or training, Kane loves to ride in a spacious SUV
“After a game or training, you just want to get in a nice car and chill.
“I had a Range Rover Sport before that. Loved that. I just wanted the bigger version. And I’ve just bought a Bentley Supersports.
“I thought I’d treat myself to a sports car. I was looking at most of them really, but because I play golf I wanted something with a bit of room, nothing too low, something a bit different.
“They are only making 710 of them. I’ve gone for white with black wheels. It’s a beautiful, beautiful car. It’s my first real sports car.

“Down the line, maybe if I win a few trophies, I can treat myself to a Ferrari or a Lamborghini.”
For club and country, Harry formed a formidable relationship with Dele Alli.
The pair have starred for Spurs and England over the years, with their play often telepathic at times.
That might explain why they both bought the same car!

“Dele’s just bought a Supersports as well,” Kane revealed.
“I’ve come in with my Supersports and he’s said, ‘I don’t believe it. I’ve just ordered that as well’. He’s got a black one and I’ve got a white one. It keeps the partnership going!”
On the pitch, Harry is often getting clattered by opposition defenders, who target him for a kicking. Off it, he’s had a couple of car collisions in his time.
“On the day of my first Premier League start for Spurs, I crashed in the car park at Costco,” he admitted.
“I knew I was starting and I was nervous and I wanted to get out of the house. So I took the missus to Costco and did a bit of shopping.

“You know what those places are like, manic, cars everywhere, and it was raining.
“I was reversing out just as someone was coming out of the space behind me and we bumped. That was embarrassing.
“But we went on to beat Sunderland 5-1 that night and I scored. It was a fantastic night. The day didn’t start so well but it’s one I’ll always remember.”

Chelsea star Jorginho was taught to play by his mum on the beaches of Brazil before being sold by a football factory

TO MOST, the sandy beaches and blue waters of Imbituba in southern Brazil offer a peaceful paradise – but for Chelsea new boy Jorginho they are the roots of his footballing education.Maurizio Sarri’s first signing at Stamford Bridge in 2018 may have been developed at Napoli, yet the person who truly moulded the midfielder also gave him life.

Jorginho, second left, was taught to play football by his mother on the beaches of BrazilCredit: Facebook / Jorghino Frello – Official / https://www.facebook.com/jorginhofrellooficial/
“My mother played football so I learned a lot from her,” Jorginho, who cost Chelsea £58million, said in 2013.
“She still plays today and understands a lot. She would take me to the beach with a ball and I would spend the whole afternoon doing technical work in the sand.”
Jorginho’s mother Maria Tereza Freitas wanted her son to be prepared for anything and everything in the game. She wanted him to be one step ahead of his opposition.
“I was raised to face problems,” he said — and there were plenty of them on his path to the Premier League.
Chelsea confirm signing of Napoli midfielder Jorginho for a fee of up to £57.4 million

But despite that preparation, Jorginho cannot have forecast his parents’ separation at the age of six. From then on, Maria was both provider and trainer.
She would spend most of her day working as a cleaner to put food on the table and earn enough money to buy her son boots and a ball as he joined the local football team.
Jorginho represented Bruscão —who are now looking to claim 0.9 per cent of the sale to Chelsea — but his education came from his mother.
The bond between them was so strong that the memory of having to move 180 kilometres away from her and home at the age of 13 still upsets him today.
“If I talk about it, I feel a lump in my throat,” Jorginho, 29, said.

Along with 50 other boys, the youngster was selected as part of a project formed by Italian businessmen in Guabiruba to create the next wave of brilliant Brazilians.
Yet it is far from the state-of-the-art facilities of Chelsea’s academy in Cobham.
Jorginho remembers the ice-cold baths. He can’t forget the windowless digs, nor the monotonous meals that rarely changed.
But it was worth it in the end.
After two years, he was one of a select few chosen to join Verona, then in the second tier of Italian football.
Jorginho’s first deal at the club was far from lucrative, though. While the agent took £27,000 from the transaction, the emerging midfielder had just £18-a-week to live on.
A large chunk of that went on keeping in touch with his mum.

“I could not do anything,” he said. “I used five euros for mobile credit, bought hygiene products, which was 15 euros, and the rest was used online to talk to my family.
“It was like that for a year-and-a-half.
“In the second year, I trained with the professionals and when I met the Brazilian goalkeeper Rafael Pinheiro, who is almost a brother to me, I told my story and he did not believe it.
“From there, he did not let me miss anything.”
After a successful loan spell with Serie D side Sambonifacese, Jorginho returned to Verona and excelled, making his first-team debut as an 18-year-old in September 2011.

He was a key figure in their promotion-winning side in 2013 and earned a move to Italian giants Napoli six months later.
During his time at the Stadio San Paolo, Jorginho learned about Chelsea after rooming with Nathaniel Chalobah, the former Blues midfielder on loan to Napoli in 2015.
“I’ve seen him in training and he plays one-touch and two-touches the whole session,” Chalobah told the podcast Golazzo: The Totally Italian Football Show earlier this year.
“I’ve never seen anything like it and I’m staring at him, thinking: ‘Oh my God, what a player!’ And nobody knew of him. Now, when I see rave reviews about him, I knew this was coming.”

Chelsea paid £58million to bring Jorginho to Stamford BridgeCredit: Getty – Contributor
Chalobah does have a word of warning to anyone at Chelsea who rooms with Jorginho, though: Jorginho is a video game fanatic.
“He was on Battlefield every night – it was non-stop,” the Watford midfielder said.
“I had to try and get him off it when I wanted to go to sleep. But for him that was just his pre-match ritual.”
Jorginho had an ally in Sarri at Stamford Bridge, with whom he worked for three years in Naples before he was given his marching orders.
The Italian coach knew his qualities well.
“Jorginho is not a physical player, he is a technical player,” Sarri said. “The most important quality is that he is very quick in the mind.”
Sarri, Chelsea and Jorginho himself have his mother to thank for that. The beaches of Imbituba will always be a classroom to them.

Spurs owner Joe Lewis lives on a boat worth £112m, gave The Nolans their first ever gig and is pals with Tiger Woods

JOE Lewis owns Tottenham Hotspur, but you’ve probably hardly ever seen him. The East End-born self-made billionaire rarely visits White Hart Lane to cheer on Harry Kane and Co, preferring life on a superyacht in the Caribbean to trips to North London.

Residing mostly in the Bahamas on his £112m boat called Aviva III, he also has a home next door to Sean Connery’s former estate and is friends with Tiger Woods.
Over the years, he launched the careers of Planet Hollywood and Hard Rock founder Robert Earl and 70s pop sensations The Nolans.
And according to the Forbes rich list, he has an estimated fortune of £4.5bn, which makes him the 5th richest man in the UK.

Let SunSport take you through the world of the man nicknamed “The Boxer” because of his sporting namesake.
    Who is Joe Lewis?
Joe is true cockney who was born within the sound of the St. Mary-le-Bow church bells in 1937, which makes him 80-years-old.
He is thought to have been raised in a flat above the Roman Arms pub in East London.

He left school at 15-years-old to work in his family’s cafe as a waiter, earning £6 a week.
He later established more businesses in London’s West End under the name Tavistock Banqueting.
Joe opened restaurants including the Northumberland Grand, which was the first fancy dress-themed eaterie in London aimed at tourists.

From there he developed the Beefeater, the Cockney, the Caledonian and the Hanover Grand.
He managed his first super club called The Talk of the Town in the 60s, where the likes of Frank Sinatra, Diana Ross and Tom Jones performed.

Joe even delved into the world of tourist shops, selling souvenirs and laying on bus tours of London for foreigners and dropping them off at his restaurants.
He sold the business in 1979 for an incredible £30m and moved to the Bahamas as a tax exile.

How he turned his millions to billions…
After moving to Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, Joe entered the world of currency trading.
It’s there he made tens of millions, gambling on stock, as he looked to continue accumulating his massive wealth.

And it was in September, 1992 when he became a billionaire, thanks in part to one shrewd investment on a day called Black Wednesday.
Joe teamed up with investor George Soros believing the Pound was overvalued and would collapse as Britain attempted to align it with other Euro countries.

He lives on one of the most luxurious boats in the world…
Well, for most months of the year… and it’s not just any old boat.

In May 2013, Spurs went on a trip to the Bahamas and were welcomed on board the vessel by host Joe.
Michael Dawson, who was skipper at the time, said: “I had never met him before, so it was nice to go over there and a great experience.
“What a really nice guy. And that yacht is unreal! But he’s just a normal guy.

“You could chat to him about anything. He tunes into all the games, he loves it.
“We just sat there chatting. He made us feel so welcome over there. It was relaxed. A lot of team-bonding together.
“It helps to be able to put a face to the person investing so much in this club he wants to be successful.

“He’s always watching. He knows what goes on. He would remember every game, every little thing.”
Joe has friends in high places…
Of course, when you’re as wealthy as Joe you’re going to attract the creme de la creme of society.

He has an epic art collection…

When you’re a wealthy man, you need hobbies aside from golf and relaxing on yachts.
That’s why Joe has an art collection that’s the envy of every Premier League owner.

Said to be worth around £1bn, he owns works by post-expressionists Picasso, Chagall, Matisse, and Miros.
However, in 2008 Joe made headline news, at least in the art world, with one extravagant purchase.

And you’d never guess where he keeps all his art?

    And now for something personal…
Joe has been married twice, his first wife was Esther Browne who he met at his greasy spoon. She now lives in Ireland.
They had two children, Vivienne and Charlie, before they divorced.
Joe then married his former assistant Jane, however they don’t have any kids.

If you think having around £17bn in your bank account isn’t bad – wait till you hear how much he stands to inherit.
The Al Nahyan  family’s wealth is believed to be worth somewhere in the region of £560bn.

Man City £9m signing Kayky, 17, is ‘next Neymar’ with pace, skills and goals from Fluminense’s famed academy

IN Man City’s case, they want their Kayky and eat it.The Premier League leaders have completed a deal for the Brazilian wonderkid, 17, in what is seen as a major coup by Pep Guardiola’s side – said to be for a fee of £9million
Teen wonderkid Kayky has been called ‘next Neymar’ and has signed for Man City
A product of the Fluminense academy, which has produced the likes of Real Madrid legend Marcelo, Liverpool midfielder Fabinho and Manchester United full-backs Rafael and Fabio – big things are expected of Kayky.
Dubbed the ‘next Neymar’ in his homeland, the forward is blessed with pace and close-control.
It’s no wonder Pep Guardiola added him to City’s ranks to bolster their attack with Sergio Aguero set to leave at the end of the season.
    READY FOR CARNIVAL
At the age of eight, Rio-raised Kayky boasted skills that he believed would set him up perfectly in the Futsal world – a five-a-side game played on a hard court indoors.
However, he fluffed an audition with Fluminense and joined the Mangueira samba school – better known for supplying acts to the Rio Carnival than their footballing prowess.
Later, and ironically, he was rediscovered by scouts at Fluminense while there playing in their kids’ team.
They saw enough in a Mangueira defeat to offer Kayky a place in their prestigious youth set-up.

Over recent years, Fluminense have a rich history of bringing through youngsters and selling them on to stay affloat.
But it’s their current “dream generation” which has fans purring.
    BRAZILIAN DOUBLE-ACT
Along with Kayky, City are also said to be interested in bringing Metinho to the club from Fluminense.
The pair were an integral part of the team that won the U17 Brazilian championship last year, and finished runners-up in the U17 Copa de Brazil.
On a personal note, Kayky was top scorer in the Brasileirao Under-17 Championship.

Every goal scored is dedicated to his father Demir with a moustache celebration.
    GENERATIONAL TALENT
With an ability to frighten his full-back through trickery and his pace, Kayky has drawn comparisons to Neymar, albeit a left-footed one.
He plays mostly on the right, where he cuts in and drives towards the opposition’s defence.
And he also has an eye for goal, as proven by his scoring stats last season.
“Kayky is a player who stands out a lot for his technical quality, especially with regard to one-on-ones, and also in his quality in front of goal,” Fluminense’s U17 coach, Guilherme Torres, told Goal.

“He is also very intelligent, searches for empty spaces on the field and has a good ability to provide assists for his team-mates.
“In addition, he has a winning, competitive mentality, which is important for a high-level player.
“His resilience has grown as he has matured, and he is learning how to deal with adversity.”
Kayky will need all of that resilience if he is to become a success in the Premier League, where talent alone doesn’t get you to the top.

Man Utd coach Martyn Pert studied accountancy, worked with Shaq O’Neal and his analysis was called ‘brilliant’ by Bielsa

MANCHESTER UNITED are heading in the right direction.Second in the league and semi-finalists in the Europa League, the Red Devils are continuing to improve as they ultimately look to win the Premier League title for the first time since 2013.

One person who has helped get the likes of Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes match-ready is Martyn Pert, who arrived at Old Trafford in 2019.
The strength and conditioning specialist, 43, was name-checked by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, after he joined the club from MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps.
After a failed playing career, Pert trained to be an accountant but jacked it in to follow his football dream.
He travelled around Europe – watching training sessions and picking up tips, until he scored his first job at Cambridge United.
In his storied journey before he took his first coaching session at Carrington, Pert’s work has been called “brilliant” by Marcelo Bielsa after sending the Argentine an analysis report.
He also worked with basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal.
    ‘THIS AIN’T FOR ME’
Pert played in the same youth team with Danny Mills and Craig Bellamy at Norwich, but when that didn’t work out he enrolled on a management accountancy course at Loughborough University.
However, ringing in his ears was his grandad’s advice that he should enjoy whatever he does with enthusiasm.
Not enthralled by number crunching, he told his mates he wanted to become a football manager.

“My mates laughed when I told them,” Pert told Training Ground Guru.
“They wanted to work for Goldman Sachs and Price Waterhouse Cooper. But I can remember my grandad getting me my first tactics book at 13 and my mum saying I was already picking teams from that age.”
    KEEN TO LEARN
Persistent Pert wrote to clubs all around Europe to see first-hand how training sessions are done.
Eventually, he was invited by Brondby, Ajax, Heerenveen, Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and AC Milan to study their drills.
He saved money, got in his Ford Fiesta and drove around Europe for 16 weeks.
“I was in a tent, going to the clubs in the day before coming back at night. I met the youth team director at Bayern Munich, sat down in his office,” he said.
“He was genuinely excited I was there. I met Franco Baresi in Italy – we sat down for a coffee.”

    BACK TO SQUARE ONE
Ambitious Pert completed his B Licence at 23 and his A Licence at 24.
He then scored a job as Cambridge United U14 coach, after the brother of his youth coach at Norwich, Dan Ashworth had taken over as youth development officer at the club.
Pert formed a close relationship with Aidy Boothroyd at Cambridge, who took him to West Brom full-time.
But when Boothroyd left for Leeds, and budget cuts were made, he was out of a job and had to think on his feet.
Just like he did before, he decided travelling would be his best bet.
With a £7,000 pay-off from West Brom, Pert booked a flight into Montreal and a return out of Rio de Janeiro.

    FEELING THE HEAT
During his world tour, Pert managed to secure three months work with the Miami Heat.
He shadowed strength and conditioning coach Bill Foran, while watching legendary NBA coach Pat Riley manage stars like Shaquille O’Neal and Dwayne Wade.
Pert revealed: “I was picking up water bottles, watching Pat Riley, sucking it all up. I’d do anything just to be around and pick up the messages Pat was giving to the players.
“They had some stars – Dwyane Wade, Shaquille O’Neal – but no matter how much money they made, Pat still had an authority over them. They had big respect for him.”

    TRIP TO SEE BIELSA
Pert followed pal Boothroyd to Watford in 2005, and helped get the club promoted.
However, when Boothroyd was fired, Brendan Rodgers came in and hired his own team.
Pert rejoined his friend at Coventry City, briefly, as assistant manager. It lasted just six months, until again they were let go.
Waiting for the phone to ring, he downloaded all of Chile’s games at the 2010 World Cup and sent his analysis on how they played to Athletic Bilbao, where Marcelo Bielsa was manager.
“I didn’t expect too much but he wrote back to me and said, ‘brilliant’”.
Years later, Bielsa would invite Pert round to his home to discuss the beautiful game.

“A few years later, when I was the assistant at Vancouver White Caps, I was in Buenos Aires with Robbo (manager Carl Robinson) and I got up at 5am and drove to Rosario, which is three and a half hours away, to meet Marcelo Bielsa in his house,” Pert continued.
“He talked football to me for three or four hours and was genuinely humble and interested I had driven all that way to meet him and listen to him talk about football.”
    THE DREAM JOB
Today, Pert is shaping Manchester United’s first team – after taking assistant manager jobs as far as Bahrain (2012-13), Cardiff City (2013-14), and Vancouver Whitecaps, where he spent four years until 2018.
On his travels, he also picked up different languages, most notably Portuguese which has helped him communicate in training with Fred and Fernandes.
And Pert was given a name check earlier on this campaign by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, when the Norwegian praised his assistant’s work in helping to improve Fred’s form.

“He [Fred] struggled with the language last season, and to be honest I would not have expected that to be a problem when he came in because Jose was the manager, so he probably communicated with him really well.
“One of our coaches, Martyn Pert, has come in from Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS and he is fluent in Portuguese, so it’s easier for Fred to communicate with us all now.”
Coach, strength and fitness conditioner, and now translator… is there anything Pert can’t do?
