The fitness secrets that help Cristiano Ronaldo leap 8ft 5ins in the air after another stunning header for Juventus

CRISTIANO RONALDO regularly defies gravity, able to routinely jump 8ft 5ins off the ground to score stunning header after stunning header for Juventus.
Fans were again in awe last night as the Portuguese superstar seemingly leapt into the Rome skyline to meet a Danilo cross, drawing comparisons with NBA legend Michael Jordan.

    23

Two years ago Ronaldo scored an incredible overhead kick 7ft 7ins off the groundCredit: AFP or licensors

And last season, the Portuguese superstar was heralded for a similarly gravity-defying header against Sampdoria that had fans in awe – while the campaign before he scored an incredible overhead kick strike against Real Madrid where he leapt 7ft 7ins to make contact with the ball.
With his athleticism clearly knowing no bounds, Ronaldo has claimed in the past that he has a ‘biological age of 23’ – and wants to continue playing into his 40s.
And it’s clear the 35-year-old shows no signs of slowing down as he continues his goal-scoring exploits.
The powerfully-built 6ft 2in forward remains one of the most physically dominant players in the world – still lightning quick, one of the strongest around and able to leap to incredible heights.

In 2018, Ronaldo said: “Right now I have a biological age of 23.
“I’ve still got a long time left, I can keep playing until I’m 41.
    “I’m feeling good, happy, I can’t complain.”

Through exercise, diet and rest Ronaldo has become one of the most physically dominant athletes in the world

Its a far cry from the skinny teenager he once was, pictured here with Portugal U21s in 2003Credit: AFP
But how does he do it?
Ronaldo does not have some super-secret formula and his incredible body is built on just a few key themes.

Dedication to the gym is obviously key, but Ronaldo follows a Pilates-based routine that focuses on resistance work to strengthen his core.
Rest is also a massive part of his routine, as is his strict diet.

    23

Swimming is a key part of Ronaldo’s regime – he goes for a post match swim after every gameCredit: Instagram, @cristiano

Post-match exercise has also become a huge part of his regime.
While other players like to sit at home in front of the TV after a match, Ronaldo heads straight to the pool.
He swims lengths, often alongside Cristiano Jr, which not only helps him unwind from the physical toll of a match, but also helps him build his huge physique.
Swimming is a brilliant full-body workout, exercising all of his arms, core and leg muscles.

    23

Ronaldo’s exercise regime doesn’t just rely on explosive muscle work, but is Pilates based – here he uses a Reformer to work outCredit: Instagram @cristiano

    23

Ronaldo has a fully-equipped gym in his homeCredit: Instagram @cristiano
Alongside his gym, Ronaldo has a secret weapon for muscle regeneration – a Cryotherapy chamber.
The £50,000 walk-in piece of kit works miracles on the body, with Ronaldo having one installed in 2013 after hearing it had worked well for Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery.
Standing in the chamber for around three minutes, liquid nitrogen freezes Ronaldo to between minus 160 and minus 200 degrees Celsius.
Cryotherapy beats muscle soreness and reduces swelling, inflammation or sprains – allowing Ronaldo to be ready for the next match or training session sooner.

    RONALDO’S FITNESS SECRETS

Hard work: Motivation to be the best is key – which Ronaldo’s five Ballons d’Or prove
The world is your gym: Don’t limit yourself to exercising in one place. Complete your routine at home in the morning or at night
Booze ban: No more wild nights out if you want to stay so sculpted
You are what you eat: Balanced diet with plenty of protein to fuel your workouts is best. Sugary foods are worst
Ronnie says relax: Downtime at home with family and friends is a must
Sleep well: Try and get at least eight hours a night, sleep is key for muscle regeneration

    23

Sleep is also a vital part of his regime, with the star insisting on eight hours a nightCredit: Instagram @cristiano
Ronaldo will also have hot and cold baths to stimulate muscle regeneration, while jets massage his muscles as he sits in the bath.
Rest and regeneration have become as important to Ronaldo as working out.
Ronaldo was once moved to deny he did 3,000 sit-ups in a day – claiming he barely did 1,000 “in one week”.
That much work would only serve to injure and exhaust his muscles.
Sleep and relaxation is another key part of his routine, with the Portuguese sticking to at least eight hours of kip a night.
Family time, whether enjoying life with his children and Georgina Rodriguez or his mother, brother and sisters, is huge to the forward.

    23

His home also has a £50,000 cryochamber that aids muscle regeneration and reduces soreness and inflammation
He explained: “Mental strength is just as important as physical strength.
“Training and physical sessions are most important, but living a relaxed lifestyle helps you to be the best you can be, physically and mentally.
“I spend my free time with family and friends, which keeps me relaxed and in a positive mindset.
“Proper sleep is really important for getting the most out of training.
“I go to bed early and get up early, especially before matches. Sleep helps muscles recover which is really important.”

    23

Ronaldo decided to dedicate himself to developing his body when he was just 11Credit: Instagram @cristiano
Explosive muscle work is part of his routine, but the real secret to his amazing body is Pilates and home workouts.
He said: “Fit in exercise wherever you can.
“You can do an abs workout in your bedroom when you wake up in the morning or before you go to bed.
“If you get into a routine then it makes it easier as it will become a habit.”

Diet plays a massive part in Ronaldo’s supreme athleticismCredit: Instagram, @cristiano

    23

The Juventus star eats plenty of fish and eggs and salad, avoiding sugary foods and processed meatsCredit: Instagram
Ronaldo was a famously skinny teenager who has completely transformed his body over the course of his professional career.
The change came when he heard comments from coaches when he was only 11.
“I remember the first time I heard one of the kids say to another kid, ‘Did you see what he did? This guy is a beast’,” said Ronaldo.
“I started hearing it all the time.
“Even from the coaches. But then somebody would always say, ‘Yeah but it’s a shame he’s so small.’
“It’s true, I was skinny. I had no muscle. So I made a decision at 11.
“I knew I had a lot of talent, but I decided that I was going to work harder than everybody.
“I started sneaking out of the dormitory at night to go work out. I got bigger and faster.
“I would walk onto the field, and the people who used to whisper, ‘Yeah, but he’s so skinny,’ now they would be looking at me like it was the end of the world.”

Ronaldo’s work would be wasted if he didn’t follow the right diet.
The Portuguese is not a vegetarian or plant-based, but does limit his meat intake because of the higher fat intake.
Fish is a key part of his diet with Lisbon speciality Bacalao a la Brasa – a mixture of braised cod, onions, thinly sliced potatoes and scrambled eggs – one of his faves.
Ronaldo has said: “I eat a high protein diet, with lots of wholegrain carbs, fruit and vegetables, and avoid sugary food.
“Eat regularly. If you train regularly it’s important to keep energy levels high to fuel your body for better performance.
“I sometimes eat up to six smaller meals a day to make sure I have enough energy to perform each session at top level.”

    23

Portuguese national team chef Luis Lavrador revealed: “Ronaldo eats all sorts of dishes, as the responsible athlete he is, but the one he likes the most is fish like gilt-head bream, swordfish and sea bass.”
His Instagram account offers more clues with lean meats and green salad often seen, while heavy carbs like potatoes and pasta saved for game days.
Ronaldo has been teetotal since at least 2005 – not only because of the adverse affects on his diet, but also because his father died an alcoholism-related death when he was 20.

His mother, Dolores Aveiro, is a key part of the Ronaldo team.
She often spends time at his house, cooking meals and ensuring they fit his strict dietary needs.
Whatever she’s doing, it clearly works. It’s hard to argue with Ronaldo when he says he’ll play till 40 when you see his exploits against Roma.

Football’s biggest bromances, from Messi’s emotional note to departing Suarez to best buds Rice and Mount

THEY are the ballers who became bezzies.
This week, Lionel Messi said goodbye to his pal Luis Suarez, who has left Barcelona to join Atletico Madrid.

But the two South Americans aren’t the only group of best buds in elite football.
SunSport rounds up football’s biggest mates.
    Messi & Suarez
The Uruguayan has said his emotional goodbye to his team-mates and cleared out his locker in the dressing room after six seasons at the Camp Nou.
He was joined by an emotional Leo Messi, who has slammed the club’s treatment of his pal in the past, to wish Suarez all the best at rivals Atletico Madrid.

Messi even took time to share a snap of the pair together one final time in the dressing room, and you can bet there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.
He captioned the photo: “I was already getting the idea but today I entered the locker room and the card really fell.
“How difficult it is going to be not to continue sharing the day to day with you, both on the pitch and outside. We will miss you so much. It was many years, many mates, lunches, dinners … Many things that will never be forgotten, every day together.
“It will be strange to see you with another shirt and much more to face you. You deserved to be fired as what you are: one of the most important players in the club’s history, achieving important things both as a group and individually.

“And not to get kicked out like they did. But the truth is that at this point nothing surprises me.
“I wish you all the best in this new challenge. I love you very much, I love you very much. See you soon friend.”
    Lingard & Rashford
FROM quirky handshakes to holiday snaps, the two Red Devils regularly give the world an insight into their bond through social media.
Jesse Lingard says he sees Marcus Rashford, five years his junior, as a little brother in the United squad.
He has nicknamed him ‘beansprouts’ and says their friendship stemmed from defending him during a feisty Manchester derby in 2016.
“He got into a little bit of beef and I had to be there for him, and from then it’s carried on and I’ll always be there for him no matter what,” Lingard said.

    Lovren & Salah
FOR Dejan Lovren and Mohamed Salah, there was an instant connection.
When Salah arrived at Liverpool in 2017, the two men discussed their tough upbringings and, from there, they were virtually inseparable.
Lovren revealed: “From day one, we felt this connection.
“We have been talking a lot, we were talking about private things and we have a similar background, a tough life from the beginning.
“And then with his normality, how he can talk to you and when you see how he thinks… we are good friends, coffee, jokes!”
Lovren has since moved on to Zenit Saint Petersburg.

    Alli & Dier
WHEN Dele Alli signed for Tottenham from Milton Keynes Dons in 2015, he quickly bonded with his fellow newbie.
Eric Dier had signed from Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon and the two quickly formed a friendship that culminated in appearing alongside each other on the Gogglebox sofa.
The Channel 4 programme gave fans an insight into their friendship as the pair bickered over a cuppa tea on telly.
But they’re not afraid to talk about their bond either, with Dele once saying: “Love’s a strong word but we do really like each other.”

    Pogba & Lukaku
IF it wasn’t for Agent Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku wouldn’t have ended up at Man United.
In the summer of 2017, when the big Belgian was choosing between a transfer to Chelsea and United, he was holidaying with Pogba in an LA mansion.
There was little doubt where he would end up.
After that, the two superstars were virtually inseparable, hanging out, playing basketball and sharing private jets.
So much so that both players looked for a move out of Manchester last summer, with Lukaku ending up at Inter Milan but Pogba remaining.

    14

Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku holidayed together in LA before the Belgian signed for Man United
    Aubameyang & Lacazette
THEY were always Gunner be mates.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang signed for Arsenal in January 2018 and immediately struck up a friendship with fellow striker Alexandre Lacazette.
Aubameyang remembers: “I came to Arsenal and there he was. It was good to see him. It was love at first sight!”
Their bond off the pitch has helped them on it, with the duo helping the club win the FA Cup this season.

    Mount & Rice
IT was in Chelsea’s academy, at the age of seven, that Mason Mount and Declan Rice began their friendship.
Both families holidayed together and travelled Europe, watching the boys play for the Blues, and their bond endured Chelsea’s decision to release Rice at the age of 14 – which made Mount’s mum cry.
Now the two midfielders have been able to team up again while playing for their country after being selected by Gareth Southgate.
And Mount provided the most hilarious video last summer when he surprised a sleeping Rice while they were on holiday together.

    Kolasinac & Ozil
IF any Prem star has proved their bezzie loyalty it’s Sead Kolasinac to Mesut Ozil.
In the face of knife-wielding moped thugs, Kolasinac leapt from Ozil’s car and defended his Arsenal pal with whom he has formed a strong bond.
German Ozil vowed to take Kolasinac under his wing when he arrived at Arsenal in 2017, and since then the two men — and their wives — have become best friends.
Last summer, both couples got married and attended each other’s wedding while the two men dyed their hair blonde after losing a bet.

    Fabregas & Suarez & Messi
IT is the friendship group football fans would dream to be a part of.
Messi, Suarez and Cesc Fabregas, who all met at Barcelona, have formed a small clique of some of the world’s greatest footballing talent.
With their respective partners — Antonella Roccuzzo, Sofia Balbi and Daniella Semaan — all friends as well, the group regularly holiday together in giant luxury villas and yachts.
There was even a suggestion in 2017 that the group racked up a £32,630 bill during a dinner on the Spanish island of Ibiza.

    Firmino & Coutinho
THEIR time together at Anfield was relatively short but extremely sweet.
Fellow Brazilians Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho formed a formidable partnership in Jurgen Klopp’s fierce attack.
So it came as a blow to Firmino when Coutinho made the £142million switch to Barcelona in January 2018.
Firmino said: “He made his decision to join Barcelona, but every time we play for the Seleção we have a chat and maintain that friendship.
“He’s an exceptional guy – one of the best friends football has given me.”

    Nolan & Carroll
WHEN Andy Carroll was bailed for an assault charge in 2010, he turned to his best mate Kevin Nolan.
Having become close friends at Newcastle, Nolan allowed his pal to live with his family on two conditions — reading Peppa Pig to his kids and being in bed by 11pm!
But it still came as some surprise when the former Liverpool striker named Nolan in his dream 5-a-side team alongside superstars such as Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez.
Nolan responded by saying: “Well, me and Andy are mates so he’s looking after his mucker!”

And when bromances go bad…Owen and Shearer
A lethal strike partnership, the darlings of England’s first-team, whose relationship spiralled from good mates to a public spat.
Michael Owen’s autobiography Reboot: My Life lifted the lid on a bitter feud that began during his time at Newcastle.

The two English heavyweights went toe-to-toe on Twitter after Owen’s book claimed Alan Shearer had questioned his professionalism at St. James’ Park.
Shearer took aim at Owen by highlighting his hefty wages at Newcastle before Owen shot back by questioning Shearer’s loyalty to Newcastle.
Let’s hope the other bezzies in this list aren’t slinging mud at each other in ten years’ time.

Man City wonderkid Liam Delap, son of Stoke hero Rory, scores on first-team debut vs Bournemouth in Carabao Cup

A LONG throw was his dad’s biggest weapon during his Stoke days, but you won’t see Man City prospect Liam Delap hurling the ball into a crowded penalty area.
The 17-year-old centre forward, who scored on his Man City first-team debut in the Carabao Cup clash against Bournemouth, is the son of Rory Delap – who was famed for a throw-in that caused havoc in opposition defences.

His dad Rory Delap was famous for his long throw-insCredit: AFP

But when Liam used to do it playing junior football – it once caused him stick from one mouthy parent , who said he was ruining the match.
Now, the 6ft 1in striker shies away from taking throw-ins after THAT public scolding.
    RUGBY TACTICS
In his hey-day, Rory wasn’t afraid to launch the ball into the mixer.
Just ask former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who deplored the attacks – likening them to rugby tactics.

It was a habit that, initially, young Liam wanted to copy.
However, when one parent took exception to the youngster’s long-throws he refused to take another throw again.
“I think he was put off when he was about an under-10!” Delap Sr. revealed in an interview with Radio Stoke.
“One of the parents shouted that he was ruining the game when he took a throw and he hasn’t taken one since.

“I don’t think that will be part of his game.”

A DIFFERENT PLAYER TO HIS DAD
While Rory played in midfield, Liam is a rangy striker with good close control, who can link-up play and is quick.
“I started in a similar position but I didn’t have his pace or power and it took me a few more chances to put the ball in the back of the net!” Delap Sr. continued.
“He’s enjoying it and that’s all I’m bothered about. I’ve never pushed him into it but he’s a good lad and if he keeps his head down and works hard, he’ll have a chance in the game.”
City took note of his ability and signed him from Derby in 2019.
And in his first year with the club he impressed, scoring eight times in 13 appearances for the U18’s, as well as netting three goals in four games for the U23’s last season.
And now he could now make his debut against Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup.

    HE’S TOUGH
One similarity he has to his dad in terms of his game is his aggression. It’s what Delap Jr. says he needs to thrive.
“(Aggression) always been a part of my game. I need it in my game,” he said in an interview with  the Manchester Evening News.
“When I’m on that edge it’s when I’m at my best, it’s just not tipping over that edge and everyone has told me that they’d never want to take it out of me, it’s just controlling that final tipping point of what is acceptable and what’s not.
“You can’t really teach it, it’s just something I have and I’m so grateful that I’ve got it but it’s just now working a mechanism that I can control it to keep myself on the pitch.”I’ve got a lot better. I was a lot worse when I was younger so I think it’s just maturing and understanding what’s right.”
FORGET DAD, IT’S ALL ABOUT RONALDO
Delap Jr. knows where he stands.
An alternative to strikers Guardiola has often deployed, he admires Juventus legend Cristiano Ronaldo, who he hopes to emulate one day.
He said: “In the past you look at Man City’s strikers and they’re small and technical but I think I’m just a different player. It works well for me because I am different and I can show myself even more. It’s good.

Man Utd chief transfer negotiator Matt Judge brought £89m Pogba to Red Devils and negotiated De Gea’s contract extension

ED WOODWARD might be the person you associate most with transfers at Manchester United, but behind-the-scenes there’s another man controlling the purse strings at Old Trafford.
Matt Judge, who carries the official title of head of corporate development, prefers to be low-key when it comes to doing business for the Premier League giants.

That’s why you’ve probably never heard of him.
But ever since 2016, there’s been a change of the guard when its come to taking on the role of chief negotiator.
That’s where Judge has come in, most notably brokering deals for the likes of £89m world record signing Paul Pogba, transfer flop Alexis Sanchez, and David De Gea’s contract extension.
And with United desperately looking to add talent to their squad after a disastrous 3-1 opening day defeat to Crystal Palace before the October 5 transfer deadline, you can bet Judge will be a busy man.

    AN ANONYMOUS EXISTENCE
While chief executive Woodward is happy to push himself front and centre as the representative of the United boardroom, Judge sits in the backdrop quietly going about his affairs.
A search on Google reveals very little about the man, and there’s an air of mystery about the tall, balding fella as he deals with the world’s biggest football names.
One solitary picture pops up, hanging behind Woodward wearing a United suit and tie, accompanying his boss to training at Carrington.
Also, he doesn’t have a picture on his LinkedIn picture.

Instead, in the bio, it says: ‘Managing Manchester United’s equity and debt capital structure – three equity offerings incl the IPO, totalling over $450m; and three debt refinancings ($1bn+) – debt private placement, term-loan and RCF. Also player negotiations (transfers and playing contracts).’

On his LinkedIn page Judge doesn’t have a picture
Like Woodward, Judge studied at Bristol University, where he finished a Masters degree in economics.
And with 13 years of experience in investment banking before his United tenure, his area of expertise seems ideal for the role.
    SEVEN YEARS AND COUNTING
Judge has been Woodward’s right-hand man since the departure of former chief executive David Gill in 2013.
He began assisting in transfer negotiations in 2016, the summer United spent a whopping £89m on L’enfant terrible Paul Pogba.
Since then, he has overseen moves involving the likes of Alexis Sanchez (£30m), Romelu Lukaku (£75m), Nemanja Matic (£40m), Viktor Lindelof (£30m), Bruno Fernandes (£49.5m) and Donny van de Beek (£35m) with United splashing £592.4m in that time.
The cat that let the secret out the bag that Judge was so heavily involved in United’s deals was Jose Mourinho.
“I know my people is doing everything they can,” the ‘Special One’ said once before a game at Burnley hoping for fresh new blood to help his ailing squad.
“The owners with the green light, Mr Woodward working hard with Matt Judge and everybody is giving everything they can and I think they are going to be successful.”
Judge and Woodward are tasked with overseeing 52 scouts dotted around the world.
Their information is channelled through scouting chiefs Marcel Bout and Mick Court.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also identifies prospective signings, before United draw up a list of targets.
Last year, a source told the Manchester Evening News that it’s Judge who negotiates contracts and transfer fees.
“Jim Lawlor and Mick Court were the scouts here under Ferguson and they are still delegated to identify targets,” a United insider told the MEN.
“They will then hold discussions with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Mike Phelan.
“Matt Judge is the one doing deals and Ed signs them off, but he also signs off non-football aspects as well.”
    CONTRACTS AND DEALS
Judge hasn’t been afraid to exercise United’s wealth when it has come to signing the world’s best footballers, and securing the futures of stars they already own.

Not only did Alexis Sanchez command a £30m transfer fee from Arsenal plus Henrikh Mkhitaryan, he was also given a £450,000-per-week contract – making him the most expensive player in Premier League history.
Judge also tied up David De Gea to a new contract after lengthy negotiations that’ll keep him at the club till 2023. That didn’t come cheap, mind, with the contract reportedly worth around £117m.
But don’t be fooled into thinking Judge isn’t canny when it comes to dealing with United’s coffers.
In 2019, he haggled with Crystal Palace’s Steve Parish over a deal for Wan-Bissaka, initially low-balling the Eagles chairman with a £40m offer.

And he did the same with Daniel James and Harry Maguire, before finally getting his man.
Any deals that are made by United in this transfer window will have the fingers of Judge presiding all over them.
Should the Red Devils dip into their hefty budget, Judge will be heavily responsible. But you’ll be unlikely to hear his name mentioned.

How STEVENAGE and Burger King took over FIFA 20, sold out of club shirts and became most used team on Twitch

IN the summer of 2019, Burger King made the astonishing move to sponsor lowly League Two club Stevenage FC.
Within one year, by utilising a video game, they’ve helped make the club one of the most marketable teams in football.

The fast-food giants cleverly tapped into the FIFA 20 world, offering free Whoppers and chips in return for gamers completing in-game challenges, while playing as the The Boro.
Now, real-life Stevenage have sold out all their club shirts, are the most played FIFA 20 team on live streaming platform Twitch, and are known around the world.
    MARKETING GENIUS
When Burger King paid Stevenage a reported £50,000 to sponsor the club, they knew exactly what they were doing.
Marcelo Pascoa, their global head of grand marketing, revealed the group were passionate “not only for the big teams, but also for the smaller ones that are poised for something big”.

    And how that has transpired.
They partnered with the creatives at DAVID The Agency and came up with ways of drawing attention to the Hertfordshire side, who draw around 2,700 fans to their Lamex Stadium.
A plan was hatched to use FIFA 20, where virtual Stevenage players could unlock special Burger King deals by completing challenges and uploading the video to Twitter.

Gamers could unlock special meal deals by sharing completed challenges on Twitter
Challenges included ‘A Nutmeg for Nuggets’ and ‘Impossible for Impossible Whopper’, as the gamers (wearing official Stevenage jerseys) happily shared their clips online in return for food and free delivery.

    THE KNOCK-ON EFFECT
With free grub on offer, it’s no surprise the global campaign that was launched across the USA, China, Mexico, Brazil, UK, France, Germany, Russia, Sweden and Spain was a big success.
And it launched little Stevenage FC into the stratosphere.
Incredibly, over 25,000 goals were shared by gamers online, while the campaign lasted for a week last October.
They became the most used team in Career Mode and on Twitch, with players adding the likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Mo Salah to their virtual club.
But, here’s the clincher, and one which drew a windfall for Stevenage.
For the first time in the club’s history, they sold out all of their shirts – priced at £42.99 a pop.

Burger King’s deal with Stevenage is set to expire at the end of this season.
But, before then, you have to wonder what they have up their sleeves for this year.
