Ex-Chelsea kid Jamal Musiala is Bayern Munich’s youngest ever Bundesliga goalscorer and set for Champions League debut

LAST month, Jamal Musiala became Bayern Munich’s youngest-ever goalscorer in the Bundesliga – scoring in the 8-0 rout over Schalke.
And ahead of the Bavarians Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid tonight, he could make his Champions League bow too.

The former Chelsea academy ace was just 17 years and 205 days old when he came off the bench and made history against the side from Gelsenkirchen in September.
Musiala only made his first-team debut in June, coming on as a sub for Bayern Munich in their 3-1 win over SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga.
The promising attacking midfielder, plucked from the Blues in the summer of 2019, was a late replacement for club legend Thomas Muller with just a couple of minutes left on the clock.
It shows the potential the German giants see in the England youth star.

Earlier in June, Musiala scored his first two goals for the Bavarians, playing for their reserve side in Germany’s third tier, 3.Liga.
His double in the 2-0 win over FSV Zwickau made him the second youngest goalscorer in the history of that competition – aged just 17 years and 98 days.
Although Musiala was just 45 days short of the record set by David Alaba, the impressive feat was not lost on Bayern’s social media channels – with their official Twitter page sharing an image of Jamal with a lovestruck eyes emoji.

    EARLY BEGINNINGS
Born in Stuttgart, Germany Musiala moved to Southampton aged seven to accompany his mother to study on a year abroad before moving to south London in 2011.

His natural talent was sniffed out by the Saints almost immediately before Chelsea snapped him up as he moved to the capital.
The club ensured he was educated at Whitgift Secondary School in Croydon – where Victor Moses and Bayern target Callum Hudson-Odoi also studied.
And the school’s director of football and former Crystal Palace striker Andrew Martin told DW Sports: “He would score 50+ goals for us a season, and he wasn’t far off that mark at Chelsea.
“Technically outstanding, very skillful, and a player who can score all types of goals, inside and outside the box. And he’s a great dribbler and likes to take players on, as he did against Schalke.
“He was always immaculately dressed for school and presented himself extremely well.
“And he would take that onto the football field, too: his conduct, his effort, his steely determination. Everything added up to him being the complete package.”

    MOVING FROM STAMFORD BRIDGE
Despite Chelsea’s desperate attempts to keep Musiala at Stamford Bridge on a long-term deal, the Stuttgart-born youngster signed for Bayern Munich in 2019 on a five-year-contract.
He joined the trend of English youngsters leaving the UK for Germany in search of first team football, including Jadon Sancho and Reiss Nelson.
And he could’ve had another Chelsea player sharing that experience with him.
Callum Hudson-Odoi, who like Jamal is repped by First Access Sports, was a chief target for the German champions around the same time, before they turned their attentions to Musiala and the England international signed a new deal with the Blues.
    ENGLAND OR GERMANY?
Although he was born in Germany, Musiala has starred for the Three Lions at youth level.
Astonishingly, he made his debut for the Under-15s at the tender age of 13.

While for the U16 side he scored three times in nine games, providing two assists. Musiala has since appeared for England’s U17 team six times and scored twice.
However, he may be hedging his bets when it comes to international football.
The promising talent has also played twice for the German U16s, so expect a tug-of-war over his international future.
    SUPER SUB
On June 3, Musiala made his professional debut over Preußen Münster in the 3. Liga – coming on as a sub in a 3-2 win.
A week later, he scored his first professional goals.
With Bayern struggling to break down FSV Zwickau, Musiala was introduced to proceedings replacing Malik Tillman after 57 minutes.
And he made the difference, with his two strikes coming in the 75th and 85th minutes to earn his side victory.
    HE’S COLD AS ICE
His boss Sebastian Hoeness praised Musiala’s ice-cold demeanour after the game.
He revealed: “The boy is freezing cold. If you talk to him before the game, he appears focused, calm and reserved.

“But when he comes on the field, he literally explodes. That’s exactly what we want to see from young players. They should take your heart in your hand and be brave.”
He added: “We know that Jamal has great qualities with the ball. The boy helps us, so he deserves the chance.
“Against Zwickau, he rewarded himself and helped us a lot as a team, which makes me extremely happy.”

Footballers who came out of retirement to relive their glory days, including Paul Scholes, Petr Cech and Johan Cruyff

THEY just didn’t want to hang up their boots.
These 11 footballing stars were initially happy to retire, but performed a sensational u-turn when they were either needed to play, or simply missed the action.

From a Manchester United legend to one of the Premier League’s all-time greatest goalies, SunSport gives you the definitive names of players who came out of retirement to relive their glory days.
    PETR CECH
The Chelsea legend was last seen pulling on the Arsenal keeper’s jersey in 2019, hanging up his gloves after four years at the Emirates at the end of the 2018-19 season.
But it was with the Blues he was a cult hero, winning four Premier League titles in 11 years, which is why he returned to Stamford Bridge last year to take up a new role as technical and performance advisor.
In 2020, Cech, now 38, was added to Chelsea’s Premier League squad as an emergency goalkeeper.

Should Edouard Mendy or Kepa Arrizabalaga get injured, Cech will be in line for a call-up.

    PAUL SCHOLES
Six months after he quit Old Trafford, Scholes decided he should pull on the Red Devils jersey once again in 2012.
It was a no-brainer for the midfield dynamo, with Sir Alex Ferguson’s side having an injury crisis in the middle of the park having to play Phil Jones and Fabio Silva as a pair.
Incredibly, no one knew he was returning when he was named on the bench for the Manchester derby, not even his team-mates who would’ve been shocked to see his shirt hanging up in the dressing room.

United finished runners-up to their noisy neighbours that season, with Scholes playing 21 games.
He returned the following year to help United win back the Premier League, and retired again – this time for good.

    JOHAN CRUYFF
The Dutch master returned to the game out of a sense of necessity.
Cruyff was 31, but was skint after an investment that was supposed to set him up for life after football went wrong.
“I had lost millions in pig-farming and that was the reason I decided to become a footballer again,” he revealed.
He returned the same year he retired – 1978 – with the Los Angeles Aztecs for an admitted pay day.
Cruyff later returned to Holland and was successful with both Ajax and Feyenoord, before finally giving up the game in 1984.

    ARJEN ROBBEN
Another flying Dutch winger, former Chelsea star Robben is the most recent addition to the list.
And his reason is more sentimental.
Robben has just signed on a free transfer for boyhood club FC Groningen, and will play for them from next season at the age of 36.
“I was 12 when I started playing in FC Groningen’s youth academy,” he said in a video on the club’s Twitter site.
“I made my home debut against Feyenoord when I was 16. After two years I made a transfer to PSV Eindhoven. After a wonderful adventure of 18 years, we’re coming home.”

    JENS LEHMANN
After leaving the Gunners in 2008, the legendary German goalie was back for a second stint between the sticks for Arsenal in 2011 – a year after he put away his gloves.
Initially he was signed as a back-up to Manuel Almunia, after Arsene Wenger’s team suffered with injuries.
At 42, Lehmann was called upon for a game against Blackpool, after Almunia got injured in the warm-up.
His team were victorious – winning 3-1. But you can bet the competitive Jens would’ve been furious he didn’t keep a clean sheet.

    ROBBIE ROGERS
After he was released by Leeds at the age of just 25, Rogers wasn’t sure if his future belonged in the game.
He then bravely came out as gay, revealing he felt like a coward for not doing it sooner.
In 2013, Rogers joined MLS giants Los Angeles Galaxy to become the first openly gay American athlete to play in a major sport.
Four years later, he announced his retirement because of persistent injuries.

    CARLOS ROA
Still one of the most bizarre moments in football EVER.
Roa was an outstanding goalkeeper for the Argentinian national team, as well as La Liga giants.
He starred for the Argies in the 1998 World Cup, and reached the final of the Copa Del Rey and Cup Winners’ Cup, as well as won the Spanish Supercup.
But he believed that the world was going to end in 2000, so wouldn’t renew his contract beyond then.
When it didn’t, he came back with his tail between his legs because he still had a contract to fulfil.

    STEPHEN CARR
When the former Spurs full-back was released by Newcastle in 2008, he had had enough of chasing wingers up and down the park.
With no takers wanting him as a free agent, Carr decided to call it a day.
A year later, he returned to the Premier League with Birmingham City.
In 2011, he captained the side to a famous League Cup final victory over Arsenal.

    ROGER MILLA
The Cameroon legend is best remembered for his star turn at the 1990 World Cup, where he couldn’t stop scoring, not to mention that brilliant dance celebration at the corner flag for every goal.
However, a year before Milla had decided he wasn’t fit for purpose and moved to the Indian Ocean island of Reunion.
It wasn’t until Cameroon’s president Paul Biya pleaded with him to return that he came back at 38.
He then returned four years later to become the oldest player to appear at the World Cup, a record which was beaten by Faryd Mondragon.

    LANDON DONOVAN
Recognised as the greatest player to ever play for the States, Donovan had initially left the LA Galaxy in 2014 as a champion.
But in 2016, he was asked to return to MLS action because of an injury crisis by the Galaxy.
Ironically enough, Donovan was working as a pundit on his former club’s game where they suffered three injuries during the match.
However, he couldn’t repeat his past success and the club ended up without a trophy and Donovan retired again.

    MARC OVERMARS
Although he had lost that electric pace that made him such a threat in the past, Overmars wasn’t going to give up the ghost of playing.
After a brilliant career at Ajax, Arsenal and Barcelona, he retired in 2004.

Then he starred in a testimonial for Jaap Stam some four years later, and was offered a route back into football.
He initially declined, believing his best days were past him.
However, he had a a change of heart when Go Ahead Eagles, his first ever club, offered him a deal.
He played 24 games in one season before finally retiring for good.

The 27-year-old was left with blood all over his bottoms during a match against Corinthians.
Henrique suffered the nasty injury during the first half of the crunch clash in Brazil.
It is reported a Corinthians player accidentally stepped on his private parts after a tackle.
But it’s not the first time a footballer has suffered an injury that’s made us wince.

These 17 unlucky footballers suffered horrific injuries that kept them out of action for months too.
Some even had their careers ended.
Here are the stomach churning incidents that might make YOUR legs buckle. Be warned… the pictures are not pretty.
    ANDRE GOMES
Everton star Andre Gomes suffered a gruesome fracture dislocation to his ankle against Spurs at Goodison Park last November.

Tottenham’s Son Heung-min was left in tears after taking out the Portuguese star, whose injury was so horrific that TV couldn’t replay it in slow motion.

    HUGO LLORIS
Last year, Hugo Lloris suffered a gruesome arm injury during Tottenham’s Premier League drubbing at Brighton that saw him miss months of action.
After he spilt a mis-hit cross, the French international fell awkwardly on his left arm and dislocated his elbow.

    RYAN SHAWCROSS
Ryan Shawcross suffered a gruesome leg injury during Stoke’s pre-season friendly against Leicester last year which could see him out for the season.
The tough centre half immediately writhed in agony before a stretcher came on and he was given oxygen after sliding in on Marc Albrighton to win a tackle.
He was taken to hospital immediately for surgery.

    HENRIK LARSSON
The Swede picked up a bad one playing for Celtic in a UEFA Cup tie against Lyon in 1999.
The challenge with Serge Blanc left him with a double leg break and out for the rest of the season.
But he was back playing eight months later, and it could have been worse for the striker – who went on to join Barcelona.

    AARON RAMSEY
Shawcross was on on the other end of a leg-breaker not too long ago when his horror challenge on Ramsey saw the Welshman’s leg nearly split in two.
Ramsey had nine months out but thankfully came back and kicked on leading to his recent mega money £400k-a-week move to Juventus.
The Gunners midfielder famously blanked Shawcross after the incident and the notorious hard man even claimed the tackle ‘changed his public persona’.

    LUKE SHAW
Shaw has fought injury and fitness issues since moving to Man Utd in a £33million deal.
He was cruelly denied ten months of action after suffering a double leg break in a challenge with PSV’s Hector Moreno
The Mexican defender was in tears when he visited the former Southampton left-back in hospital the following day.

    MARCIN WASILEWSKI
Now a Premier League champion with Leicester, there was a time when the big Polish defender might have thought his career was over.
Axel Witsel came in with a studs-up tackle during a heated Anderlecht vs Standard Liege clash that earned him an eight-game ban and left Wasilewski sidelined for ten months.
He considered suing and threatened to snub a handshake when they crossed paths again.

    GARY MABBUTT
While the leg breakers will turn your stomach, this facial injury was genuinely scary.
Former Spurs defender Mabbutt had his face smashed in by a filthy elbow from Wimbledon’s John Fashanu.
It left him with a cheekbone fractured in four places and an eye socket cracked in three.
Mabbutt needed a metal plate inserted and was out the game for 12 months.

    EDUARDO DA SILVA
An unpleasant tackle with an unpleasant ending.
Birmingham defender Martin Taylor saw red after this horrific lunge on the Gunners forward.
And Brazilian midfielder Gilberto Silva had to act as translator to medical staff as he spoke Portuguese and English.
Eduardo needed a year to recover, but managed to continue his career at Arsenal and then Shakhtar Donetsk.

    KIERON DYER
Just ten days after his West Ham debut, following a £6million move from Newcastle, the England midfielder’s career was left in tatters.
A tackle by Bristol Rovers’ Joe Jacobsen left his leg broken in two places.
Already troubled by injuries, Dyer needed 17 months out and was never the same player again.

    FEDERICO MATTIELLO
If it wasn’t for bad luck, the Juventus starlet would have had no luck at all.
He’d already broken his leg once in his career before a collision with Roma tough-nut Radja Naingollan produced this shocker.
At just 21, the defender was on loan at Chievo at the time.

    LUC NILIS
Brazilian legend Ronaldo once described Villa’s Belgian forward as one of his favourite strike partners.
He then netted on his debut against Chelsea in 2000.
But his career was over two games later after a collision with Ipswich keeper Richard Wright left him fearing his leg would need to be amputated.

    PRESTON BURPO
Not the most well known on the list among English football fans.
But this was a career-ending shocker too.

    DAVE BUSST
If you’ve got this far, you obviously like this sort of thing.
Busst’s horrific collision with Manchester United’s Denis Irwin and Brian McClair left Peter Schmeichel vomiting and in need of counselling.

Neymar is closing in on Pele’s all-time goalscoring record for Brazil, but still has lots to do to be an all-time great

LAST Tuesday Neymar scored a hat trick to carry Brazil to a 4-2 win away to Peru in a tense World Cup qualifier.
It also meant that he has overtaken Ronaldo in Brazil’s list of all time top goalscorers.

    5

Neymar’s hat trick saw him overtake Ronaldo as Brazil’s second highest goalscorerCredit: EPA

Only Pele stands in front of him – and with 64 senior goals to Pele’s 77, it would seem only a matter of time before Neymar becomes the top marksman of the most successful team in the history of international football.
And yet still the questions remain.
    FRIENDLY FIRE
That match a week ago was a crunch World Cup qualifier – the only meeting in the opening two rounds of the South American campaign of two teams who both made it through to Russia 2018. These were clearly important goals.
But so many of Neymar’s strikes for his country have come in less pressurised circumstances.

Of his 64 Brazil goals, 42 were scored in friendlies. This high proportion, though, is hardly his fault.
So many of his goals have come in friendlies because so many of his games – 66 of 102 caps – have been friendlies.
    BAD LUCK IN TOURNAMENTS
Neymar has been part of the Brazil side since the first game after the 2010 World Cup.

    5

Neymar’s 2014 World Cup campaign was brought short by injuryCredit: Getty – Contributor

    5

While in Russia 2018 Neymar was easing his way back into fitness after a long lay offCredit: AFP
As hosts of the next tournament they did not have to go through the qualifying process, and so for the first few years of his international career there was little else but friendlies.

He missed the last two versions of the Copa America. In 2016 Brazil decided they would rather have him for the Olympic tournament, and injury forced him out of last year’s competition.
His 2014 World Cup campaign was, of course, brought short by injury, and in Russia 2018 he was easing his way back from a lengthy lay off, and, histrionics aside, played at least as well as could have been expected.
All this means that the second top scorer in Brazil’s history still has plenty to do if he is to be considered one of the all time greats.
It is clearly a fabulous achievement to have netted more times than the likes of Ronaldo, Zico and Romario.
    LEAVING A LEGACY
But so much of Neymar’s legacy will be determined but what his does just over two years from now in Qatar.

    5

Neymar’s legacy will be determined by what happens in the next two years of his careerCredit: AFP or licensors
Some of this also applies to his club career. True, Neymar won the Champions League in style with Barcelona. But it was Lionel Messi’s team.
And since Neymar struck out on his own, he has to live with the limitations of the choice that he made.
Paris Saint Germain are so dominant in France that some of his achievements there carry the weight of international friendlies.
It is all about the knockout stages of the Champions League, in the last few months of the season. Except that this time Neymar and company may well be tested a little earlier than usual.
Their Champions League group looks very interesting. True, Basaksehir of Turkey will be feeling their way in the competition.
But the wonderfully coached Red Bull Leipzig will be full of confidence after their splendid exploits in the last campaign – and also had a close look at PSG in August when they lost to them in the semi final in August.
And then there is Manchester United – not what they were, perhaps, but still much more of a threat than the teams PSG regularly brush aside in the French league.
Paris Saint Germain came close to a first Champions League win before losing 1-0 to Bayern Munich.

Their campaign emphasised the questions that are still hanging over Neymar – he was both brilliant and brittle, coming up with flashes of genius but collapsing under pressure in the final when the Germans took the lead.
For both club and country, then, the jury is still out on Neymar – with no definitive decision until the next World Cup and the next couple of versions of the Champions League.
But today’s game against United gives him an opportunity to start winning over some of the jurors.

Dortmund’s 15-year-old Moukoko has 10-year boot deal with Nike, is set for Champions League squad and is a goal-machine

WHERE were you when Youssoufa Moukoko made his Champions League debut?
That could be the question on every football fans’ lips in years to come when this incredibly gifted striker fulfils his promise.

    9

And we may get to see that moment this season.
The 15-year-old sensation is set to be named in Borussia Dortmund’s Champions League squad.
Should he make his debut for the German giants, Moukoko will become the youngest ever Champions League debutant.
    RULE BREAKER
Unbelievably, Moukoko is so good the Bundesliga have changed their age eligibility rules in order to let him play.

Previously, players have not been allowed to play in Germany’s top-flight until they are 16-and-a-half.
But such have been the waves caused by Moukoko’s rapid rise, that this has now been lowered to just 16, which he turns on November 20.
Furthermore, in anticipation of his German debut (he would be eligible to play away Hertha Berlin on November 21) the live-wire forward has been training with Lucien Favre’s first team.
The current Dortmund record was set by Nuri Sahin back in 2005, when he made his debut at 16 years, 11 months and one day – before going on to play for Real Madrid and Liverpool.

The German teen, who signed a boot deal with Nike for 10-years worth a reported £9million in 2019, has left observers flabbergasted by his incredible ability at such a young age.
But his progress is nothing new.
    GOALS, GOALS, GOALS
At the age of just 12, pre-teen Moukoko was playing for Dortmund’s under-17s and Germany’s under-16s.
He scored an astonishing 90 goals in 56 games at under-17 level, before bagging 34 in 20 this season for the under-19s – despite having started the season as a 14-year-old.
And after the Bundesliga’s new ruling, dubbed the “Moukoko rule”, he could make his first-team bow in the winter – and become Dortmund’s youngster-ever player.
Champions League-winning club legend and youth boss Lars Ricken spoke to German newspaper Bild about Moukoko’s rapid rise.
“He’s scored a lot of goals, is very inquisitive, hungry for success, hardworking and always comes with a smile that distinguishes him,” he said.
“That’s what we look at. The tools are there.”

    HOW OLD IS HE?
But such success has been quickly met with doubts about his age, even from inside his own club.
Dortmund’s Under-23s manager Timo Preus said: “With Youssoufa, I can imagine that his age has only been guessed.
“Maybe in reality he is one or two years older. But certainly he is not 17. For him that is very difficult.
“There is nothing to blame him for, the boy is not cheating or anything.”
However, Moukoko’s dad Joseph has been forced to insist his son is the age he claims he is – even if he refuses to get caught up in the tidal wave of excitement surrounding the lad.

Moukoko Sr said: “His age is right.
“Immediately after he was was born I registered him at the German consulate in Yaounde. We have a German birth certificate.
“For me he is not a wonderkid. I was even better as a kid.”
    CONVEYOR BELT OF TALENT
Dortmund have a rich heritage in bleeding first class youngsters from their youth set-up to the first team.
Impressive Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic burst onto the scene as a 17-year-old under Thomas Tuchel in 2016.
And more recently, Erling Haaland, Jadon Sancho and Gio Reyna have made fans sit up and take notice of their ability.

The German giants have also spent around £25million on Birmingham City starlet Jude Bellingham, who himself only turned 17 back in June.
Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc said of Moukoko last November: “He’s an outstanding talent and we want him to learn how to train and play with adults.”
And thanks to the “Moukoko rule”, this November it appears that Zorc can get his wish.

Man Utd star Pellistri’s godfather is a famous rock star and he’s been described as a ‘rascal’ on the pitch by Riquelme

ON transfer deadline day last week, Manchester United added two Uruguayans to their expensively-assembled squad.
One of them, of course, was Edinson Cavani – universally known as a goal-getter in Serie A and Ligue 1 through the years, and will provide competition upfront for Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford.

Pellistri’s godfather is rock star Sebastian Teysera, second from the left

But the other, 18-year-old Facundo Pellistri, is relatively unknown on our shores and one for the future.
Little fanfare was made when the exciting winger signed from Penarol for £9million.
However, sounding the drum – quite literally – could be his rock star godfather.
Uruguay singer Sebastian Teysera, who boasts over 20 million views on YouTube, is also Pellistri’s biggest fan.

    LET’S ROCK
Teysera, 47, made his name with the band La Vela Puerca, who have scored hits in South America.
Infamous for their controversial logo – a drawing of the snout of a pig smoking marijuana – they formed in 1995 and play many types of music including punk and ska.
Pellistri was backstage one of their most iconic stadium shows – at the Estadio Luna Park in Buenos Aires – to celebrate his birthday.
Teysera led the band with a rendition of ‘happy birthday’ for his godson during the gig, which the crowd sang back.

A huge Penarol fan, Teysera always has time for Pellistri.
“Seba always calls me and congratulates me, he is a Peñarol fan and has come to see me (play),” Pellistri once revealed.
    FANS IN HIGH PLACES
Championed by ex-United star Diego Forlan, a former Penarol manager, it’s been reported the Uruguay legend convinced Pellistri his future belonged at Old Trafford.
And the top talent certainly has fans in high places.
Former Argentina playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme believes United have secured a gem – calling him a ‘rascal’ of a player.

“He is young and talented,” Riquelme revealed.
“He hasn’t played that much but you can see he is a real rascal with the ball at his feet. And that is important.
“There aren’t many like him around, who have the courage to be so cheeky on the pitch. That is highly valuable.”

Villa’s Douglas Luiz is Brazil’s unlikely new hero but faces most important game of his life vs Peru

BEFORE last Friday, the senior international career of Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz was limited to ten minutes off the bench in a low key friendly against South Korea last November.
Suddenly, he looks important to Brazil’s cause as they set out on the road to Qatar in the quest to win their first World Cup in twenty years.

There was a place going in the Brazilian midfield. Arthur, who has just moved from Barcelona to Juventus, was left out of the squad for the opening two rounds of qualifiers.
He had been a fixture in the post-Russia 2018 side. Coach Tite had a look at Allan, now of Everton, but he fell from favour.
Someone new would have to come in for Friday’s game at home to Bolivia in Sao Paulo.
The front runner appeared to be Bruno Guimaraes of Lyon, who captained Brazil’s Under-23 side earlier this year.

But as the week wore on it became clear that Douglas Luiz would get the nod. And during the game it also became clear that he has a vital role to play.
    BEATEN JUST ONCE
In Tite’s four year reign as Brazil coach, he has only been beaten once in a competitive game – but it was the big one, the World Cup quarter final against Belgium when the team were ambushed early and crashed out of the competition 2-1.
Tite has spent plenty of time mulling over that defeat. One clear conclusion was that the team were too open down the left flank.
For all his attacking flair, Marcelo has never been a solid defensive full back. And ahead of him, Neymar was not going to do a great deal of defending.

Marcelo has not played for Brazil since. Tite’s idea straight after the World Cup was to go with a different style of full back, creating from deep and holding the defensive line rather than acting as wingers.

    3

In the coach’s words, he was aiming for Manchester City full backs instead of Liverpool ones.
And so the left back position became a fight between Alex Sandro of Juventus and the former Chelsea veteran Filipe Luis.
But that was not a success – and along came Renan Lodi of Atletico Madrid, emerging as an attacking left back of genuine quality.
There was another advantage in having Renan Lodi charge down the wing. It freed Neymar to move away from the left touchline, allowing him to wander inside and probe for weaknesses.
But if Tite was to return to an attacking left back, he had to balance out his side with the inclusion of an extra defensive midfielder to cover the space left behind – and this is where Douglas Luiz came in.
    BATTERED BOLIVIA
And he did a thoroughly proficient job in the 5-0 win over Bolivia. Allowances have to be made, though, for the weakness of the opposition.
Bolivia were ludicrously outgunned, and the game, especially in the first half, was little more than attack against defence.
Just before the first goal in the 15th minute Brazil had exchanged 118 passes against Bolivia’s three.

Douglas Luiz protected the space behind Lodi – three of the five goals came from breaks down the left – and kept the team ticking over with crisp passing.
But other matches – indeed all the other 17 rounds of the qualification campaign – will be harder.

Starting with Tuesday’s visit to Peru. In all the games in the first two rounds, Peru against Brazil is the only meeting between teams who both qualified for Russia 2018.
Peruvian morale is high after a creditable 2-2 draw away to Paraguay on Thursday – the other four away sides in the opening round all lost.
Assuming that Brazil field the same team, then Douglas Luiz is in for the most important 90 minutes of his life in Lima.
