Need a Restaurant Recommendation? Ask an N.B.A. Player.

The best basketball players on the planet travel regularly, embrace local cultures and have deep pockets — making them very credible reviewers of restaurants across the country.Pick a city, any city, on the National Basketball Association’s 30-team circuit, and Kelly Olynyk, a forward for the Utah Jazz, has deep knowledge of the local restaurant scene. If you are searching for top-tier sushi in Boston, where he spent his first four N.B.A. seasons, he recommends Fuji at Ink Block in the South End. In Charlotte, N.C., he will most likely suggest the smoked wings at Rooster’s Wood-Fired Kitchen. Whether you are craving the best Italian in San Francisco or in pursuit of tasty treats in Indianapolis — Mr. Olynyk knows a place. He is a 6-foot-11 human version of Yelp.“You have spots in each city that you love and know you can count on,” said Mr. Olynyk, 32, after eating at thousands of restaurants over the 10 years he has played professionally on five N.B.A. teams. “But part of having an interest in different cultures and cuisines and restaurants is trying new ones.”In a league that consists of 28 cities, roughly 450 players and 1,230 regular season games each year, N.B.A. business travel is frequent and first-class. Teams fly private and stay in five-star hotel chains like the Four Seasons and the Ritz-Carlton. But they also eat, a lot, and by embracing local culture and institutions with their deep pockets, they have become very credible restaurant authorities.Karl-Anthony Towns, of the Timberwolves, at Fratelli’s Pizza & Cafe in his hometown, Piscataway, N.J. Mr. Towns grew up eating Fratelli’s pizza. When they started dating, he told his girlfriend: “‘All you need is a cheese slice and I promise you it will change your life.”via Karl-Anthony TownsN.B.A. players are larger-than-normal humans (average height is 6-foot-6) with equally large salaries (average annual pay is $8.32 million), a combination that results in voracious appetites and often in reservations at the country’s most renowned restaurants. Each player also receives a $133 food per diem for days on the road.“Sometimes, if we’re only in a city one night, I’ll go to two dinners,” admitted Mr. Olynyk. The 2023-24 N.B.A. season just tipped off on Oct. 24, and in a typical season, each team plays 41 games on the road, visiting each opposing market (that includes 27 U.S. cities and Toronto) at least once. There are additional preseason and playoff games also to consider. The Golden State Warriors, for example, traveled to Los Angeles — home of the Lakers and Clippers — seven times last season. That means many meals and time to bond.“We travel so much around the country that going out to restaurants has always been the greatest way to bring everyone together,” said Karl-Anthony Towns, a three-time N.B.A. All-Star center with the Minnesota Timberwolves.Regardless of which teammates or coaches they choose to dine with, players take notice of the food, service and settings: Word-of-mouth recommendations between players are a major part of N.B.A. restaurant culture.“We’re a brotherhood, so you’re going to definitely have some honest reviews from your 449 brothers,” said Mr. Towns, 27.Rudy Gobert, a Timberwolves teammate, frequent gives Mr. Towns tips on lesser-known eateries with little fanfare on Yelp, Tripadvisor or other recommendation websites. Mr. Olynyk, of the Jazz, enjoys introducing his younger teammates to top restaurants in different cities (and picking up the bill), much as his former teammate Rajon Rondo did for him, treating Mr. Olynyk to Strega Italiano in Boston when Mr. Olynyk was a rookie with the Celtics.“It’s kind of like a rite of passage,” Mr. Olynyk, a native of Toronto, said.Kevin Love, a veteran forward for the Miami Heat, grew up in Portland, Ore., a city known for its creative dining scene. As his basketball career — one that has included five All-Star selections and a championship ring with the Cleveland Cavaliers — has advanced, his food knowledge has improved and his network of fellow food lovers has expanded (The Times documented his passion for travel in 2019).“Having a love for food, as well as wine, has brought me into a number of circles where I’ve made really good friends with restaurateurs, chefs and people who have similar interests,” said Mr. Love, 35, who is a partner (along with his former teammate Channing Frye) in Chosen Family Wines, a wine brand based out of Willamette Valley, Ore. “That’s a fun world to be in.”He has leveraged connections in the restaurant industry to organize team dinners, key to building team camaraderie. Before the Heat visit New York City, Mr. Love will call area restaurants and design unique dining experiences for his teammates.“I’m going to take these guys out and show them great food and introduce them to maybe a different cuisine,” Mr. Love said.He still considers Portland one of his top food destinations, naming Kann and RingSide Steakhouse (he strongly suggests the onion rings) as his hometown favorites. In New York City, where he lived in the off-season before recently moving to Long Island, Mr. Love lists as favorites Carbone, Sadelle’s, Hometown Bar-B-Que, Fini Pizza and Misi (Sean Feeney, the restaurateur, is a good friend of his), and Eleven Madison Park (Daniel Humm, the chef and owner, is also a friend).Kevin Love, a veteran forward for the Miami Heat, has leveraged his connections in the restaurant industry to organize team dinners.Michael Dwyer/Associated Press“It’s one of the most unbelievably beautiful kitchens I’ve ever seen,” Mr. Love said of Eleven Madison Park. For many N.B.A. players, supporting minority-owned businesses can be as important as finding establishments with Michelin stars. Mr. Towns, of the Timberwolves, will also approach local residents to seek restaurant recommendations.“I’ve always been intrigued by people and cultures,” said Mr. Towns, who has Dominican and African American roots. “And the best way to learn about people and cultures is to sit down and enjoy their food.”In Minneapolis, Mr. Towns recommends Soul Bowl, a soul food and Caribbean-inspired restaurant in the city’s North Loop. But it was Fratelli’s Pizza Cafe, in his hometown, Piscataway, N.J., where he took his girlfriend when they first started dating.“‘I got to take you home to a pizzeria that I grew up on,’” Mr. Towns recalled saying. “I said, ‘All you need is a cheese slice and I promise you it will change your life.’”“She agrees with me,” he said with a laugh.Follow New York Times Travel on Instagram and sign up for our weekly Travel Dispatch newsletter to get expert tips on traveling smarter and inspiration for your next vacation. Northampton Town aim to show life CAN begin at 40 with health checks for the public.. leaving our man facing harsh facts

SO it’s official. I’m getting older, overweight and need to start changing my lifestyle and eating habits.Yup, it’s time to finally accept I’m a forty-something who has to stop living like I’m in my twenties.
SunSport’s Justin Allen has an “over-40s” health check with Northampton Town boss Jon Brady at the club’s training ground
Ex-player Brady tells Justin how he has had to kick his beloved croissants from his breakfast routine to stay healthy
Northampton Town gently broke the news after they invited me to undergo a health-check designed for people aged 40 and above, alongside their manager Jon Brady. So what happened to that well-worn belief that life begins at 40?
The Cobblers have been going into their community visiting local businesses to give employees in that age category hassle-free tests.
Akshay Mistry, the club’s community sports participation officer, is the man entrusted to deliver those checks.
The roughly 20-30 minute procedure includes measuring body mass index (BMI) by taking height, weight and waist measurements — and then checking blood pressure and heart rate, cholesterol levels and, if necessary, a diabetes test.
    READ MORE FOOTBALL NEWS
Usually such check-ups are performed at a local GP surgery but getting a doctor’s appointment nowadays seems impossible.
Akshay has performed more than 300 tests since the club started conducting them — and the Cobblers have almost certainly saved two people’s lives after discovering their health statistics were at dangerous levels.
He told me: “We want to get people between the ages of 40 and 74 checked. It’s an easy procedure but GP surgeries have their hands full so this takes the pressure off the NHS while making these tests more accessible.
HOW TO GET FREE BETS ON FOOTBALL
“Anything that can get flagged now will work better later as this can prevent future problems.
    Most read in EFL
“If you have high blood pressure and are overweight to the point it’s dangerous that could be the end of you.
“But if you can discover this now, you can do something about it — either by changing or moderating your lifestyle and diet or, if at dangerous levels, being referred to a doctor to put you on medication as well as making a plan.
“I’ve come across two who I referred to a GP — and it’s a good job because had they not had the check they almost certainly could’ve one day suddenly dropped dead.”
The checks are done in coordination with Public Health England and the results uploaded to the NHS database to give your GP access.
And even people who appear to live a healthy lifestyle can find that sometimes all is not as well as they think.
Take Cobblers boss Brady, who is 48, for instance. He has lived his life in football — playing either in the EFL or at the top of non-league and working as a coach.
He likes running, regularly walks his dog and is surrounded by healthy food and drink at the club’s training ground.
Jon Brady gets his height measurement taken by Akshay Mistry
Northampton boss Brady has his blood taken to test his cholesterol
Ex-Cambridge United wideman Brady is ready for his blood pressure test
But, not so long ago, he did a check through the League Managers Association and was stunned to find there was a health issue that needed addressing.
He told me: “The test flagged up my cholesterol levels needed to drop.
“They were concerned and did a lot of testing. I even had to wear the blood pressure measuring device for 48 hours.
“And it came out that I need to look after my cholesterol. I’ve certain enzymes that aren’t working properly.
“I always thought I was fit and healthy but that wasn’t the case. I now watch what I eat. I love a croissant in the morning and my wife goes mad at me — so I don’t have them anymore.
“It’s non-dairy tasteless yoghurts with blueberries for me!”
So on to my own check. My height is just shy of 6ft, waist is 39 inches and weight is 98.4kg. This means I have a BMI of 30 and, for the first time in my life, am officially obese! Although I think Akshay needs to double check his dodgy tape measure and scales!
Like Brady, I enjoyed running — often going for 5k or 10k runs — but since the pandemic have lost that enthusiasm.
Our man Justin gets his finger pricked in a cholesterol test
    Akshay takes Justin’s waist measurement
I drink beer and wine, love food, enjoy socialising and have a job which takes me away from my home regularly, making it difficult to get into a healthy routine.
Then came the blood pressure and heart rate test. Two readings were taken .. the systolic pressure (when your heart pushes blood out) and diastolic pressure (when your heart rests between beats).
Mine came in at 139 (sp) and 93 (dp) … healthy levels are below 140 and 90. So my systolic pressure is creeping towards an unhealthy high while the diastolic pressure is now over the healthy threshold.
However, the good news is I’m not at the worrying 160/100 level that would require me to be referred to a GP.
My heart-rate came in at 99 beats per minute. However, that was probably because it was pounding in fear that Akshay was about to tell me I’d no longer be able to scoff delicious pizzas, Chinese takeaways or kebabs.
My Apple Watch says my average resting heart rate for the last week has been 78 — which is within the average level of 60-100.
And finally my cholesterol levels were recorded after having some blood pricked from one of my fingers.
SunSport’s Justin Allen undergoes a Health Check at the Northampton Town FC training groundCredit: Alan Walter
Brady works in the stressful environment of football management
While The Sun’s Justin Allen has a busy schedule as a football writer
My overall total came in at 3.74, which is a healthy level. Anything between five to six would mean you seriously need to eat healthier — but anything above that would require an urgent doctor’s appointment.
My “good cholesterol level” only came in at 0.71 though. A healthy person would expect to have that at least 1.0.
So I asked Akshay for some health tips.
He said: “Your BMI isn’t exactly where you want it. For your height, you should lose about 10kg. That will automatically bring your waist down too.
“Your blood pressure isn’t too bad but you do need to bring it down slightly. Losing weight should help that.
“You also need to add more healthy cholesterol to your blood. So good food is the answer — oily fish such as tuna, salmon and mackerel will help. Also things such as raw nuts, avocados, blueberries and non-dairy yoghurt and supplements of fish oils or multi-vitamins are all great.
“And you need to get your resting heart rate down a bit. You don’t need to lift weights but I’d recommend doing more aerobic exercise. That should do the trick.”
I’m going to get on it but, sorry, not ready to give up a steak and ale pie and a pint at the football. That is a non-negotiable. Gotta run — must meet my mates down the pub .. er, sorry, I mean health club!

The diner was extremely unhappy with Salt Bae
Salt Bae – real name Nusret Gökçe, – is seen with his Air Pods in as he carves up a steak tableside with his trademark swagger.
But the angry customer took to TikTok to complain – rating the internet star’s restaurant a dismal 1.7 out of 10.
Ehtisham Aziz shared the video – saying he paid £500 to have the musclebound butcher carve up his steak at his restaurant Nusr-Et in Doha, Qatar.
But he was left unimpressed as Salt Bae appeared disinterested as he seemed to be chatting to someone via his AirPods.

The guest branded him “super disrespectful” and also complained about the quality of the food in the video which has been viewed more than 4million times.
“Food was extremely expensive and staff was very rude,” wrote Mr Aziz.
He said having to pay for Bae to plate the steak tableside was “-20/10” while having him talking on his Air Pods was “-100000/10”.

“Just seems to be an overpriced PR stunt. Don’t bother.”
A two-star review from September said: “Service was great along with atmosphere.

Other reviews complain of cold chips “reminiscent of industrially produced food” and supermarket condiments in plastic squeezy bottles “like at a roadside diner”.
Another customer who went in March said: “The restaurant manager was rude and unhelpful when I raised my concern over the food being served cold.
“Fries were completely cold and burger had been standing for a long time before served. Worst customer service in Doha.”
Last month, Salt Bae sparked fury for boasting how a group racked up a bill for £140,584 at his diner in Abu Dhabi.

Brits were asked to vote on the best national sandwich filling from all eight groups – before it started and teams started getting knocked out – resulting in the eight-inch-tall behemoth.
It also features steak from Argentina, maple bacon from Canada – who are now out of the tournament – and to represent England, a dollop of Coronation chicken.
In Group G, Brazilian bauru – melted cheese and tomato, a popular sandwich filling in the country – topped the list out of the other front-runners ahead of Swiss cheese and zaltibor, a delicacy from Serbia.
All eight ingredients were stuffed between four thick slices of tiger bread, voted by the nation as the best vessel for the gargantuan snack.

The sandwich was created by Warburtons, whose chairman Jonathan Warburton said: “The ultimate football sandwich is certainly drool-worthy.
“It ticks all the boxes to make for a great match-watching occasion and we’re excited to recreate the barm at home to accompany our sofa side support of the footy.”
It comes as research of 2,000 adults found 28 per cent of adults admitted to being self-confessed sandwich lovers, typically scoffing four each week.
