Martinez faces punishment for World Cup final antics as Fifa open proceedings against Argentina for ‘rule breaches’

FIFA have launched an investigation into Argentina’s behaviour in the World Cup final. Football’s governing body announced it has “opened proceedings” against Lionel Messi and Co for potential violations of Fifa’s disciplinary code.

The statement read: “The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against the Argentinian Football Association due to potential breaches of articles 11 (Offensive behaviour and violations of the principles of fair play) and 12 (Misconduct of players and officials) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, as well as of article 44 of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Regulations in conjunction with the Media and Marketing Regulations for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, during the Argentina v. France FIFA World Cup final.”
Following their dramatic shootout victory over France in the final, many were critical of Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
Martinez used the dark arts to get into the heads of the French players – a tactic which ultimately paid dividends as his nation won the shootout.
But it was his antics after the final whistle which caused the most controversy.

During the award ceremony, Martinez made a crude gesture with the Golden Glove award.
In the celebrations in the dressing room, Martinez also called for a minute’s silence for Kylian Mbappe.
This continued at the trophy parade back in Argentina.
The ex-Arsenal stopper was spotted holding a baby doll with a picture of Mbappe’s face.

And now, almost one month after the final, Argentina’s FA could face a sizeable fine over their conduct.
Argentina was not the only nation in Fifa’s cross hairs following the tournament.
Sanctions have already been levelled towards Mexico due to discriminatory chanting, which resulted in an £88,000 fine and the order to play one game behind closed doors.
Serbia and Ecuador also faced punishment, with both being hit with partial stadium closures for breaching the discrimination clause, though Serbia also broke the misconduct clause.
This also landed Serbia a fine of £44,000, while Ecuador were handed a fine just under £18,000.
2018 finalists and third placed nation Croatia have also had an investigation opened against them for their own conduct against Morocco.
The charges against Croatia refer to “potential violations of articles 13 (discrimination) and 16 (order and security at matches) of the Fifa disciplinary code.”
Tottenham star Cristian Romero hit back at critics of Argentina’s antics.
In an interview with Sky Sports, he said: “Yes (people make too much of it). Only because people just see the photos.

The Golden Age for agents is over… it’s about time Fifa put a stop to their heavyweight pay packets

MINUS trumpets and a drumroll, an important piece of history went uncelebrated this week when Fifa brought agents to heel.Measured against the cheers of approval for the end of the £20-a- week maximum wage and the right to fair contracts decades ago, there will be few cheers from today’s players.
Football agents have made a pretty penny off their clients for many a yearCredit: Reuters
The late Mino Raiola was one of the most powerful agents in the gameCredit: Rex
One or two might frown at their agent’s payments, a few more might prefer personal representation but most have been prepared to accept the unchecked power of those men — and the occasional woman — in the belief that all’s fair when they like the look of their heavyweight pay packets.
Many agents are brigands, none more so than the recently deceased Mino Raiola who, you may guarantee, would have climbed onto a soapbox by now and let Fifa, club owners and anyone who knows naked avarice when they see it, that he’s a misunderstood soul with the good of football at heart.
Surely, only his mother believed that!
A magician, his best trick was to represent buying and selling clubs and his player all at the same time, netting himself tens of millions by appealing to the wilder ambitions of owners.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
That’s a practice which is to be outlawed under new rules as triple representation in transfers is to be banned. Hard for anyone to argue against this although a number of agents will look to fight it.
Maybe agents view litigation against the new rules as a stronger weapon than noise, as few have publicly moaned about them.
And while they have known of Fifa’s intentions for some time and have not taken any action yet, Fifa have already introduced a tough new examination and licensing system this week.
Or maybe even they accept that being paid millions of pounds for doing very little means the game is up.

Expect a rush of major transfers before October when a cap on agents’ fees and limits on multiple representations will slash their share.
Surely these rules will result in a reduction of the £167million paid by the Premier League clubs to these middlemen in 2022 alone, which can only be a good thing.
Fifa chiefs have drafted a formidable set of regulations — and about time, too.
However, no matter how watertight they appear to be where many millions of easily-earned profit are concerned my rule would be “watch your back”.
From my experience, dealings are especially suspicious and secretive when it comes to signing a talented lad.
Bribing parents and other connections is well recorded. Unqualified agents swarm like bees around a honeypot, dripping promises that go far, far beyond a box of chocolates.
Shutting down this kind of business will be hard, no matter what the authorities, clubs or teachers say, rather like enforcing the law during the Gold Rush.
But that should not stop them from trying despite a guaranteed loss of licence for two years if agents are caught transgressing.
All club CEO’s will be making very careful notes and be ready to dob in any agent who breaches the rules to Fifa.
Agent’s cut of a player’s remuneration will be five per cent, up to £180,000- a-year and a maximum three per cent over it.
It will be the same as for the buying club, and six per cent for both.
Then there’s an overall ten per cent for acting for the seller.
Furthermore, no longer will clubs be permitted to pay the agent’s fees, it will be the player’s responsibility. This new rule alone may have the single biggest effect on reducing agent payments!

There will be checks on all contracts, the rules and punishments for agents, clubs and players who break the rules will be swift and harsh.

Four PSG players could win the award including Messi, who is amongst the frontrunners.
He has hit form for his club this season with 13 goals and 14 assists in 20 games.
But it is his World Cup win that could clinch The Best award for Messi, who scored six goals in seven games for Argentina in Qatar.
Messi was recognised as the best player at the World Cup with the Golden Ball award and he could claim his second The Best Fifa award when the winner is announced on February 27.

The 35-year-old has only won the award once since its inception in 2016 and another win would see him equal Ronaldo’s record of two.
The former Manchester United star has not made the shortlist of candidates for the first time ever following his dreadful start to the season.
The 37-year-old veteran has been replaced with younger stars as Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez is surprisingly nominated for the first time.

Arsenal facing Mykhailo Mudryk issues with Fifa transfer ruling causing problems as £88m Shakhtar deal is thrashed out

SHAKHTAR DONETSK are unlikely to budge from their mega-money valuation of Mykhailo Mudryk after losing out on millions due to a Fifa transfer ruling.Arsenal are eager to sign the £88million Ukrainian winger, while Chelsea have also entered the hunt.

Mudryk, 22, is eager to join the Gunners and has even shared pictures to social media watching their recent matches.
As pointed out by the Independent, however, Shakhtar are desperate to make the most out of their top asset.
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year, Fifa ruled that foreign players based there could suspend their contracts and leave for nothing.
This has seen Shakhtar’s Brazilian stars Tete, Maycon, Vinicius Tobias and Vitao leave for free – costing the Ukrainian club millions in potential transfer fees.
    READ MORE ON ARSENAL
They could all theoretically return, but with no end to the war imminent, the situation will likely continue to drag on.
So Shakhtar will not be accepting any discounts for star man Mudryk – despite his desire to join Arsenal “as soon as possible”.

They believe that he is worth £88m, in line with huge fees paid by Manchester United and Manchester City for what they deem to be similar talents in Antony and Jack Grealish.
Arsenal have so far had two bids rejected for Mudryk, with the second worth £62m.

“No answer at all… it’s ridiculous. Its negligence of the decision-making process.
“They should consult all parties, especially the Ukrainian clubs. All the European organisations support Ukraine.
“How is it possible to behave like this?”
It’s claimed that Shakhtar want to sue Fifa for £43m for their ruling.

New Club World Cup outranks European Super League for self-preening greed, Gianni Infantino must be stopped

FIFA’s idea to stage a 32-team Club World Cup in 2025 outranks even the European Super League in self-preening greed.Fed on the success of the football in Qatar, no doubt president Gianni Infantino thinks he has timed his announcement as perfectly as Kylian Mbappe’s sliding volley in the World Cup final.
Fifa recently announced plans for a new Club World CupCredit: Getty
He could not be more wrong.
Already forces which swatted aside the Super League plan, which was to be a private competition between a dozen European clubs, are preparing to go to war again.
Infantino believes he is a special man, from his white trainers to his expenses claim for a £8,795 mattress at home.
    He is well named.

The infantile pre-tournament rant that he felt a kinship with Qataris, gays, disabled, Africans, migrant workers and women all because he had ginger hair, made me wish Sepp Blatter was back in charge.
Infantino got away with the most unlikely World Cup venue outside the Moon and no one challenged it.
He has now constructed this new tournament, as unstable as a wooden house in a rotten tree and is so pleased with himself that he couldn’t wait for the World Cup to finish before he unveiled it.
Foisted on our sport by a bunch of crooks, Qatar worked because of worldwide enthusiasm for a great competition.

It did not work for the hundreds of migrant workers who died building the stadiums.
Cramming it into the middle of the European season wasn’t popular, either.
But the fact that national associations were persuaded (bullied) into it were grounds enough for similar arrangements to be put forward for this Club World Cup.
Full of conceit, Infantino struck at the opportune moment to introduce his tournament, which he says would be played every four years and, he must have estimated, would dwarf the Champions League’s appeal and income.
There appeared to be no thought about player exhaustion or how the lucky 32 clubs would be chosen, only hints that 13 places would go to European clubs.
We have no further details yet but let’s say England will be granted one entrant.
    How does that come about?
Presumably, the Premier League champions from the preceding competition would be chosen — but there must be doubts otherwise a more complete outline surely would have been announced?
The fact Fifa have not yet announced how they will jam 48 teams into the 2026 World Cup rather supports my view that it is hit and hope.
Still, it is possible that clubs will be selected by invitation.
If so, you can bet Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus would receive very favourable treatment regardless of where they finish in their domestic leagues.
This renegade trio has not given up on a European Super League because they see it as a huge money-spinner.
And that is, despite the do-good speeches from Infantino & Co, the true motive for a Club World Cup: The billions to be made from huge attendances, TV rights and sponsorship.
Fifa may see themselves as the United Nations of football but their ambitions are undermined by weak-kneed acceptance of Qatar’s stances and by the way in which previous committee members were corrupted.
