Petrol heads angry at ‘overreaction’ after Goodwood Festival of Speed CANCELLED for first time ever due to ‘severe wind’

PETROL heads have reacted furiously after Saturday’s Goodwood’s Festival of Speed was cancelled due to “severe wind”.Organisers of the popular motorsport event in Chichester, West Sussex, made the announcement on Friday after “consulting meteorologists, health and safety experts and other key stakeholders”.

It is the first time in the 30-year history of the festival that a day has been cancelled.
But it has come much to the dismay of excited festival-goers, many of whom had already purchased tickets.
The Sunday event is due to go ahead as planned and is sold out, but those who had been planning to attend a day earlier “will not be able to access the site”.
Those missing out will receive refunds for the event, but many have slammed the organisers for “overreacting” – having lost out on accommodation costs after travelling from across the UK and abroad to attend the event.

One said: “We are in the camp site now. The wind isn’t bad enough to knock a one-man B&M tent over with no pegs in, let alone anything more! Could easily make something happen today even if a few things had to be changed up.”
Another wrote: “Think you have over reacted to forecast. With weather as it was Thursday into Friday you should have pulled the plug then if you were going to, not just today.
“Thousands left in a right state stuck here there and everywhere.”
A third said: “I’m laid in my hotel bed and now planning my drive home in the morning. Gutted.”
    Most read in Motorsport
A fourth added: “Just travelled 3 hours and paid for a hotel!!”
Another wrote: “Absolutely gutted. Travelled 3hrs tonight.”
It comes after a statement from organisers on Friday said the event would not be going ahead as planned due to “forecasted high winds posing a serious risk to the various temporary structures across the site”.
An updated statement this morning added: “As per the communication issued last night, due to the severe wind warning, the Festival of Speed will not take place today.
“Please do not travel to the site. The event will resume as planned on Sunday.”
It continues: “Thank you for your understanding – further updates will be provided via email in due course. If you are camping over the weekend, you are welcome to stay in the campsites.
“Please be careful during the high winds and consider taking down gazebos and awnings, securing tents with additional pegs or demounting during the peak wind period.”
It comes after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for strong winds across the southwest of England and west Wales between 9am and midnight on Saturday.
Winds are forecast to reach 55mph in exposed places, with travel disruption also expected.

Campsite managers will help those staying at Goodwood brave the storm over the weekend.
Meanwhile, fuming residents say they are trapped in their homes by the Goodwood Festival of Speed – and are taking action against gridlocked roads.

And the 38-year-old Mercedes star was pictured taking a selfie with David Furnish on the edge of the stage as Elton delivered what’s being billed as the finest headline set in Glastonbury history in the final show of his last ever UK tour.
Guests including actors Taron Egerton, Andrew Garfield and Paul McCartney descended on the Pyramid Stage’s backstage area for the ultimate festival finale — as Britain’s finest songwriter performed his last concert.
The Rocket Man hit the stage in a gold suit and opened with Pinball Wizard in what must have been one of the most-anticipated shows in the festival’s history.

He jetted to France for Paris Fashion Week with England stars Jude Bellingham, Marcus Rashford and Trent Alexander-Arnold also spotted at the A-List event.
It comes after he had earlier posted a shot of his incredible abs in a message to suggest he was gunning for Max Verstappen ahead of next week’s Austrian Grand Prix.
Hamilton captioned the snap: “Sometimes I fall but I always come back.”
Although current world champion Verstappen claimed Red Bull’s 100th win in Formula One at the Canadian Grand Prix, progress was made by Mercedes and Hamilton.
Hamilton finished in third, earning a second successive podium finish.
Those recent results leave him in fourth spot in the leaderboard, behind Fernando Alonso, Sergio Perez and Verstappen.
But, with 13 races to go there’s still plenty of time for Hamilton to claw back Verstappen’s 93 point lead.

I’m an Arsenal legend and World Cup winner… now I’m planning a record-breaking music festival at F1 track

But the former Arsenal forward, who scored 31 goals in 82 games for the Gunners, has made an unusual job choice as he enters the twilight of his footballing career.
The former German international is organising a four-day music festival called Glucksgefuhle which translates to Happy Feelings.
The festival will take place on the legendary F1 track Hockenheim.
Over 100,000 fans are expected to attend between September 14 and 17.

Acts will include top DJs Steve Aoki and Paul van Dyk, as well as ATB – who had a UK No.1 with “9 PM (Till I Come).”
If the German, Polish and Arsenal links didn’t give it away yet, the answer to the mystery player turned festival organiser is of course… Lukas Podolski.
The Polish-born German forward helped Arsenal end their nine year trophy drought as part of the squad that won the 2014 FA Cup.
That summer, he was also part of the Germany squad that won the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Now 38, he plays in his native Poland for Gornik Zabrze.
Despite his advancing age he returned six goals and ten assists in 29 appearances this season.
On organising the massive festival alongside his playing career, Podolski told German outlet Bild: “The last few years have taken a great toll on everyone, and times are still tough.
“It’s for this reason we want to offer people a bit of time out with this festival.
“We want to look at lots of happy faces at the Hockenheim circuit.  People should have the chance to switch off for a couple of days.”
