      Max Verstappen puts gearbox disaster behind him to take pole for Dutch Grand Prix with Lewis Hamilton starting fourth

      MAX VERSTAPPEN sent the orange-clad fans wild by taking pole for the Dutch GP – then slammed the “stupid” ones to threw smoke bombs onto the track.Qualifying had to be stopped as one flare was removed from the live race track while the fan was identified and chucked out of the circuit.

      A second flare was lobbed onto the track in the final part of qualifying in another dangerous moment, but thankfully it rolled off the circuit and away from the passing cars.
      Verstappen blasted the individuals who made up the 105,000 crowd at Zandvoort.
      He said: “To hold flares already, it’s nice but there’s a limit to how much. But to throw it on the track is just stupid.
      “The person who did that got removed. Just don’t do that. It’s not good for anyone.
      “You get thrown out so you can’t see the race and for us the session is stopped because it’s dangerous, there’s stuff on the track. So you shouldn’t do it.”
      It comes after Dutch fans were accused of sexual harassment, racism and homophobia at Austrian Grand Prix.

      There were also incidents of them burning Lewis Hamilton merchandise in Hungary and altercations with police in Spa.
      Charles Leclerc, who will start today’s race in second place, condemned the actions of those who threw the missles.
      He added: “It’s dangerous, so don’t do this type of thing. This shouldn’t happen.
      “I don’t know if in the future we can do anything to avoid that. If a car is passing at that time, then it can create unnecessary risk.”
      A spin in the final seconds for Verstappen’s Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez put pay to Lewis Hamilton’s chances of challenging for a front-row start.
      The Mercedes man was forced to slow due to the yellow flags waved for Perez’s stricken car.

      However, he is confident after a strong performance all weekend and looking to make up for his first-lap crash at Spa last weekend.
      He said: “I was much happier coming into this weekend, to have a car that’s potentially fighting but I just don’t understand.
      “One weekend it can be so far off and the next weekend, all of a sudden, we’re right there, so it’s confusing.
      “But there are lots of positives to take from today. If we hadn’t had the yellow flag we would have been fighting for the front row.
      “The potential is there but I have no idea whether the car is going to be good or bad at the next races.
      “It’s like a mood swing. Like the characteristics of a human being, you don’t know what side of the bed you’re going to get out of.”
      When quizzed about his chance of making it on to the podium, he added: “I am definitely optimistic it’s just difficult to overtake here so we’ll see.

      “I felt I could go quicker so I hope that that translates for the race, but I’ll definitely be pushing as hard as I can for a podium.”
      Hamilton’s teammate George Russell was also denied a higher-starting berth on the grid due to Perez’s late error.
      And the Brit, who will start in sixth place on the grid, also had his say on the flares, which were prohibited by security and smuggled in.
      He said: “The fans here and the atmosphere here is one of the best of the season, it’s impressive what they’ve done as an event.
      “But you can’t mess around with things like this. It’s a shame for everyone else.
      “How dangerous are they? If you run over it it’s quite sharp, it could give you a puncture. It could be harmless or cause a lot of damage.

      But when his Ferrari Driver Academy contract expires at the end of the year, Schumacher will not be kept on, report Motorsport.com.
      Haas have not confirmed the news but driver Antonio Giovinazzi is reportedly being lined up as the youngster’s replacement.
      That would leave Schumacher without a team, though his close friend Esteban Ocon has backed him to join Alpine.
      He said: “What I would like is for Mick to race with me, that is clear cause he is my good friend, but that is not going into the bosses’ ear. I’ll let them decide.”

      Schumacher joined the Ferrari Driver Academy in 2019 – a year after winning the European F3 championship.
      He was given his first taste of F1 in Bahrain in April 2019, before having a second outing for Alfa Romeo the following day.
      Later that year he teamed up with Haas in Abu Dhabi but only scored his first F1 points at Silverstone this year.
      Schumacher followed up that success with a sixth-place finish in Austria but it is believed he has not done enough to earn another year.

      As a result, the family’s long-held connection with Ferrari appears to be coming to an end.

      FORMULA ONE legend Michael Schumacher’s legendary Ferrari has been sold at auction for £5million. The German’s iconic car from 1998 has a 100 per cent winning record, the only car to ever be used more than three times and win every race.

      Schumacher, 53, won all four races in this version of the F300.
      The first victory came at the Canadian GP, followed by wins in France and at Silverstone. He then took the chequered flag in Monzo too.
      However, that was not enough to win that year’s title as Schumacher was beaten by Mika Hakkinen.
      The vehicle has the chassis number 187, a complete three litre V10 engine and 800 brake horsepower.

      It was sold by Sotheby’s Auction House for £5,272,818 in Monterey, Mexico.
      It becomes the fourth most expensive F1 car ever behind two other Ferraris driven by the seven-time world champion and a vintage Mercedes.
      The third most expensive was Schuey’s car used in the 2002 Austrain Grand Prix where he was controversially allowed to overtake team-mate Rubens Barrichello on the last lap to win the race.
      He went on to win the championship in the car.

      In second place was Schumacher’s 2001 car used in the Monaco Grand Prix that hit the £6million mark.
      It takes the total sales of legend’s F1 cars to £17million.
      The most expensive ever sold is the 1954 Mercedes W196R driven by Juan Manuel Fangio as he won the title.
      Schumacher himself has a £7million car collection that includes a rare Ferrari he drove in F1 worth £2.8million.
      It was purchased for a staggering £24.5million.
      Schumacher current health state is unknown following his skiing accident in 2013 but it’s reported his family is paying £115,00-a-week for special care. More

      The former Arsenal man walked back to his car, only to find one of his rear tyres looking flat.
      He subsequently got behind the wheel of his Ferrari 812 to drive away from reporters.

      But he didn’t get very far, appearing to have to stop because of his wonky wheel.
      Chelsea are keen to bring Aubameyang back to London, reuniting him with his former Borussia Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel in the process.
      While SunSport this week revealed that Man United are also considering a move for the Gabonese star.
      Spanish paper Mundo Deportivo claim that Aubameyang is happy to stay at cash-strapped Barca, having only joined them in January.

      The fighter backed up his words as he relinquished the prestigious Ring heavyweight strap.

      Sulaiman said: “Just finished a touching video conference with Tyson Fury who has confirmed his official retirement from boxing.
      “We fully support his decision which is a dream for anyone to retire undefeated and as WBC champion of the world. WBC boxing will prepare a special farewell event soon.” More

      According to ESPN, the fight is targeted for December in Wales, where Anthony Joshua has twice headlined.

      And it is claimed Goldstar Promotions – the company that handles Fury’s meet-and-greets across the UK – are behind the offer.
      That is despite Hall of Fame pair Frank Warren and Bob Arum leading the WBC champion’s career in recent years.

      The Gypsy King and Chisora always maintained they had a verbal agreement in place for a third fight together.

      “Tell them you want to hang out with me, OK? And send me the paperwork bitch.”
      But Fury, 33, hit back: “I don’t need to speak to anybody.
      “I spoke to your management team, we’re all good. Everything is sorted, looking good. Contract be over or a day or so.

      Toto Wolff downplays Lewis Hamilton’s chances by claiming Mercedes are still miles behind F1 rivals Ferrari and Red Bull

      TOTO WOLFF downplayed Mercedes’ chances of catching Ferrari and Red Bull – despite a recent upturn in form for Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. Mercedes endured a nightmare start to the season due to troubles with porpoising on the new car.

      They are yet to secure a win from 13 races this season and have just nine left to overtake their rivals.
      However, a series of good results before the summer break – including five podiums in a row for Hamilton – has led to plenty more optimism around the Brackley-based Formula One team.
      Red Bull lead the constructors’ championship on 431 points, with Ferrari second on 334 while Mercedes have closed the gap to sit third with 304 as they chase a NINTH title in a row.
      But team principal Wolff is keeping a lid on expectations – especially after a series of Ferrari strategy blunders crippling the “dominant force” that is Charles Leclerc when he is on the correct tyres.

      Wolff said: “I think we need to be careful that it’s not specific to Budapest [and] that we just landed in the perfect window.
      “The other teams, Ferrari especially yesterday, complained about the tyre not being where it should have been.
      “So, in my personal opinion, we’re still lacking to the front runners.
      “You’ve seen that Leclerc on the right tyre is still a dominant force. But at least we were in the same race.

      “Like I said before, I don’t want to say now suddenly we are right bang into the game and we can win races because I don’t think that’s the case.
      “I think we landed it well in Budapest on Saturday, and we are reaping the results [in the race].
      “But I don’t think we are close enough to Ferrari and Red Bull to really fight them as of yet, but lots of learning and it’s important to get it wrong also.”
      Mercedes secured both men on the podium in Budapest last time out as Hamilton surged from seventh to second and Russell finished third after securing a maiden pole of his career and his team’s first of the season.
      However, Max Verstappen extended his lead in the drivers’ title by taking the chequered flag despite starting tenth on the grid.
      The reigning champ is now 80 points clear of Leclerc and looks on course to ease to back-to-back crowns.
      F1 returns on August 28 with the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa.

      How it’s feared Michael Schumacher will NEVER fully recover from ski crash as doc says ‘he won’t be like he was before’

      MICHAEL Schumacher has not been seen or heard from for nearly nine years – and there are fears he could never fully recover from his horror ski crash.Mystery continues to loom over the 53-year-old racing legend’s health as his family keep a tight control of what information is released to fans.

      Some fear Schumacher may never be the same again after his horrendous accident in December 2013 while skiing with his son Mick in the Alps.
      He fell and hit his head – suffering a brain injury which left him a medically induced coma for six months.
      And since being released home, there has been few concrete updates beyond his wife Corinna admitting he is “different”.
      Many of his friends have said they hope he gets better and fans constantly urge the former Ferrari and Mercedes driver to “keep fighting”.

      Brain surgeon Erich Riederer believes the seven-time world champion may never fully recover from the accident, saying he was likely left in a “vegetative state”.
      Speaking September 2020, the doctor – who is not directly connected with Schuey – gave his opinion on French television station TMC.
      “I think he’s in a vegetative state, which means he’s awake but not responding,” he said.
      “He is breathing, his heart is beating, he can probably sit up and take baby steps with help, but no more.

      ‘I think that’s the maximum for him. Is there any chance of seeing him like he was before his accident?
      “I really don’t think so.”
      Meanwhile in September 2017, former F1 driver Philippe Streiff also warned that Schuey may never be the same again.
      Streiff – who was left quadriplegic after a crash in preseason testing in 1989 – said it would be “difficult” for Schumacher.
      “After a neurological accident, you always have hopes. But after more than three years, it’s probably more difficult,” he told The Daily Star.
      “[I think] 100% recovering probably not, but anyways I hope he’ll return to the public eye for his fans.”
      Schumacher’s management have previously hit back at Streiff and outright denied he knows anything about Michael’s condition.
      KEEP FIGHTING
      But the former AGS driver insisted he was merely giving the “opinion” of someone who had also suffered a life-changing injury.
      And one of Michael’s closest confidantes, ex-Ferrari boss Jean Todt, described the ace as living with the “consequences” of his accident in 2021.
      Todt is understood to be one of the few people who regularly visits Schumacher.
      But unlike some doubters, he has never given up hope that Michael could one day recover and see his fans.
      Todt just last month spoke of how he still loves to watch Grand Prixs with Michael at his home.
      The champ’s son Mick is now racing in the sport with the Haas team, with the 23-year-old never commenting on his dad’s health, but saying he would “give up everything” to chat to him about F1.
      Todt and Schumacher have been pals for years, with the 76-year-old Frenchman being a key part of the Ferrari team that saw the German win five world titles from 2000 to 2004.

      And he was reported to have been a regular visitor at the Ferrari and Mercedes racer’s bedside after his ski crash, with F1 champ Niki Lauda describing the pair as having a “deep and respectful friendship”.
      “I don’t miss Michael, I see him. Yes, it’s true, I watch races with Michael,” Todt told German TV channel RTL.
      “But sure, I guess what I miss is what we used to do together.”
      The ex-FIA president previously told how he “hopes the world” will be able to see his dear friend again.
      Schumacher’s close F1 pal Felipe Massa gave a brief insight into his friend’s condition in 2020.
      He said: “I know how he is, I have information. The main thing about all this is that we know his situation is not easy.
      “He is in a difficult phase but we need to respect him and the family.”
      Cryptic comments by Schumacher’s former Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo in February 2016 sparked further speculation about the racer’s condition.
      He told reporters: “I have news and unfortunately it is not good. Life is strange.”
      And in one promising comment, controversial F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone hinted that Michael could once again return to the public eye.
      He said: “He is not with us at the moment. But when he gets better, he’ll answer all the questions.”
      Michael is one of the greatest F1 drivers of all time, dominating the sport in the early 2000s after rising to power in the 90s.
      He raced from 1991 to 2006, and again from 2010 to 2012 – a second act of his career which saw him become instrumental in setting up Lewis Hamilton’s dominant Mercedes team.
