Geri Horner facing ‘ultimate Catch-22’ over husband Christian after piling their £440m fortune into Downton dream

GERI Horner’s seemingly perfect life as a horsey country mum could come crashing down if her F1 boss husband Christian is found to have acted “inappropriately” towards a female colleague. And a public relations guru has warned the former Spice Girl to think carefully before adopting the approach of former bandmate Victoria Beckham by putting on a show of marital unity.

The once cheeky Geri, who grew up on a council estate in Watford, famously wore a revealing Union Jack dress at the Brit Awards and patted King Charles’s bum at a Royal Variety performance in 1997.
But these days the 51-year-old has transformed her image, bedding down with the Cotswold set, wearing only white and reportedly hoping that the monarch will reward her with a CBE for her work promoting literacy.
An honour might be under threat if the allegations against Red Bull Racing boss Christian, who has been accused of “controlling behaviour” with a female work colleague, prove to be founded.
Sources say the investigation is set to centre on the employee’s concerns about Horner’s strict work regime and does not relate to any sexual impropriety.

The Spice Girl is said to be “too upset” to talk to “anyone” as her husband, 50, gears up for a D-Day grilling over the claims on Friday.
But the Daily Mail reports that she will follow in the footsteps of bandmate Victoria, who publicly stood by husband David during allegations of an affair in 2004.
A source told the paper: “She will stand by him and be at his side just as much as she always has been. She never misses a race and that will not change.”
However, Geri, who now uses the surname Halliwell-Horner, should be cautious about following Posh Spice’s lead, says PR boss Jack Izzard, CEO of Rhizome Media.
    Most read in Motorsport
He tells The Sun: “If they’re confident that the allegations are baseless and that the independent investigation will vindicate Mr Horner, they could put on a public show of marital unity like Geri’s fellow Spice Girl Victoria Beckham did when it emerged her husband David had been having an affair.
“But this is risky. Allegations of inappropriate behaviour by a man in a position of power can sometimes have a toxic tinge far beyond that of an extra-marital affair.”

In an ultimate PR Catch-22, hiding from the crisis might not be a good idea, either.
Geri, who married Christian in 2015 after a whirlwind romance, is devoted to her husband – so much so that the password for the Wi-Fi at their home was once reportedly “Wonderful Husband.”
Christian Horner’s wife Spice Girl Geri bakes super Swiss roll cake in lavish country home
They have one son together, seven-year-old Monty, and she has previously insisted they will never get divorced.
By not supporting Christian, she could give the impression that all is not well in the Halliwell-Horner household.
Jack cautions: “Equally, going into lockdown could be interpreted as a sign of a fracture in the couple’s relationship and fuel speculation that there’s no smoke without fire.”
Of course, that would be unfair on Geri, for whom the news of an investigation into Christian’s workplace behaviour is said to have come out of the blue.
Christian vehemently denies any wrongdoing and will be defending himself at the internal hearing on Friday, which is said to be at Red Bull’s headquarters in Milton Keynes.
Geri’s husband has been the head of Red Bull’s Formula One race team since it launched in 2005.
He has brought remarkable success, including seven championship crowns for its drivers and six constructors titles.
But earlier this week the Austrian firm revealed it was investigating allegations of “inappropriate behaviour” by Christian.
It issued a statement, saying: “After being made aware of certain recent allegations, the company launched an independent investigation. The company takes these matters extremely seriously.”
Going into lockdown could be interpreted as a sign of a fractureJack Izzard
Up until now, the main complaint against Christian has been from his F1 rivals, which appeared to be sour grapes over his success.
He is a workaholic who never misses a race and admits to being driven by a need to win.
Jack comments: “There’s a brutal irony here. The reputation of a woman whose figure-hugging Union Jack dress once made her the avatar of both Girl Power and Cool Britannia now hangs in the balance, not because of something she has done, but because of the allegations swirling around her husband.”

Geri and Christian’s romance was in some ways to the manor born.
Their second-ever meeting was at Highclere Castle in Hampshire, which is the setting for the beloved upstairs downstairs TV drama Downton Abbey.
They met at a clay pigeon shoot and realised they had a passion for country pursuits.
Since becoming Mrs Halliwell-Horner, Geri certainly seems to have moved closer to a circle more familiar to her privately-educated husband.
Geri, whose mum was a cleaner, these days counts Baroness Bamford, who lives nearby on a 1500-acre estate in the Cotswolds, among her pals – along with top members of the Royal Family.
In November 2022 the Queen Consort Camilla gave Geri a warm hug at a reception at Buckingham Palace in London.
She was also embraced by Prince William when she appeared with him at an event for his homeless charity Homewards.
And shortly after the King’s coronation last year, Geri gave Charles a peck on the cheek at a Prince’s Trust event.

The one constant at all these events has been the colour of Geri’s dress. Even when she is out riding her horses at the couple’s Oxfordshire estate, white is preferred.
She explained her stylistic passion to The Sun, saying: “Everything becomes really simple. It’s like wearing a school uniform as an adult.
“It matches with everything and I literally don’t have to think in the mornings. It kind of looks like you’ve made an effort when you haven’t.”
And if you were to look at the singer-turned-children author’s Instagram page, you would think her life was perfect bliss.
A week ago she was celebrating her horse Look at Mee’s first race; five weeks back Christian was awarded a CBE and before Christmas she held a star-studded 50th birthday party for her husband.
The guests included Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood, Rod Stewart and Gary Barlow.
When it was Geri’s own 50th in 2022, David Walliams, Holly Willoughby, Rylan, Chris Evans, Myleene Klass and Poppy Delevingne joined in the celebrations.
It kind of looks like you’ve made an effort when you haven’tGeri on always wearing white
With the couple worth a reported £440million they can certainly afford to splash out on extravagant parties.
They recently built 14 stables for their horses, which will take part in races. Their home in Banbury has donkeys, goats, ducks and she recently graced the cover of upmarket Country & Town House magazine.
Geri’s daughter Bluebell, 17, and Christian’s daughter Olivia, ten – both from previous relationships – also share the plush mansion.
She loves to bake with the kids and cook for her husband, when he’s not away at Grand Prix races.
On Friday Christian will be the centre of attention for all the wrong reasons.
If he comes out with his good reputation in-tact, there will be no reason why Geri’s high life among the upper classes can’t go on.

But if not, the glamorous invitations for the power couple are sure to dry up.
Jack concludes: “Ultimately the findings of the investigation will determine whether this is just engine trouble or a high-speed crash for F1’s golden couple.”

Christian Horner went from failed driver to youngest F1 boss…but whirlwind wedding to wife Geri Horner caused family row

RED Bull boss Christian Horner is well used to steering himself through personal crises. The F1 boss, 50, who is facing accusations of “controlling behaviour” from a female colleague, fell out with his parents after he left the mother of his first child and got engaged to Spice Girl Geri Halliwell, 51.

His mum and dad didn’t attend the couple’s star studded wedding in 2015, reportedly because they were upset about him leaving his partner of 14 years, Beverley Allen.
Eventually, though, Christian managed to patch things up with both Beverley and his parents.
The controversial Red Bull boss has also rowed with rival F1 bosses – and there is reportedly an ongoing feud with Mercedes’ racing chief Toto Wolff.
It stems from accusations that Red Bull broke budget rules and benefitted from rule bending when their driver Max Verstappen beat Lewis Hamilton to the F1 championship in 2021.

Christian also had to overcome the failure of his own career as a racing driver, quitting at 25.
He did so by borrowing money and putting his energy into establishing his own team.
The hard-working team boss is said to have never missed a day at the track, even for the birth of his first child.
Now there are rumours of a power struggle within Red Bull, a battle that could be Christian’s toughest yet.

The Austrian company has hired an independent barrister to investigate claims of “inappropriate behaviour” by the F1 chief.
Multi-millionaire Christian has denied the allegations and is expected to stay on as boss while the probe is carried out.
Geri Horner threw celeb-packed 50th birthday bash – but one Spice Girl did not attend
He’s sure to do everything to hold onto his role, having once said: “I never struggle for motivation. Motivation is something that burns within.
“I think winning becomes addictive. It’s the fear of failure that drives all of us at Red Bull.
“Formula One is such a competitive business that you can’t afford to miss a beat.”
    Driven dreams
Christian, from Leamington Spa in Warwickshire, was born into a world of cars, with his wealthy father Garry owning a business that supplied parts to motor manufacturers.
One of three brothers, he was privately educated and got the racing bug after persuading his parents to buy him a go-kart at the age of 11.
He said:  “I left school at 18, I didn’t go to university, my focus was very much on racing and forging a career as a driver.”

Aged 19 he started competing for Manor Racing in the British Formula Renault Championship.
He worked his way up the field to Formula F3000, considered to be the final step to reaching Formula 1.
But when Juan Pablo Montoya, who progressed to F1, came past him on a very fast corner, Christian realised he didn’t have the right psychological mentality for the daredevil sport.
He admitted: “The commitment he had, was one I knew my brain and foot just wouldn’t be able to do. I recognised that I wasn’t prepared to take that risk.”
    Team boss
Aged 25 he quit racing and focused on running the Arden team he’d already set up using borrowed money.
For a brief time Arden were part-funded from Russian oil company Lukoil, whose oligarch founder is currently on the UK sanctions list.
His success at Arden convinced Red Bull to make him the youngest ever F1 team chief in January 2005, with Christian aged just 31.
I recognised that I wasn’t prepared to take that riskChristian Horner
He proved to be a dynamic and committed boss.
Christian promised to jump into a swimming pool in just a Superman cape when the team achieved its first F1 podium, and did exactly that after the car finished in the top three at Monaco in 2006.
Four years later Red Bull won both its first F1 Constructors Championship and driver’s championship, with a young Sebastian Vettel taking the title.
    Family fall out

In his home life things appeared to be settled, with Christian living in a Northamptonshire mansion with his former pub landlady partner Beverley Allen, who is six years his senior.
He was stepdad to Beverley’s two children, Kieron, 35, and Liam, 31, and the couple were keen to have a child of their own.
That dream came true when Beverley gave birth to Olivia in October 2013, although Christian couldn’t be there to see his daughter arrive because he was with Red Bull in Japan.
He said at the time: “I think being a father will be more of a challenge than running a team of over 500 people, but I am looking forward to it.”
But six months later Christian split from Beverley after 14 years together.
I think being a father will be more of a challenge than running a team of over 500 people, but I am looking forward to itChristian Horner
Shortly afterwards in March 2014, he was dating Geri, and by November the couple announced in The Times newspaper that they were engaged.
Geri had long been an F1 fan and they met through a shared love for motorsport.
The whirlwind engagement surprised many, because neither Geri, who has a daughter Bluebell, now 17, from a former relationship, nor Christian had previously walked down the aisle.
It was not welcomed by Christian’s parents Garry and Sara, who refused to attend the wedding at Woburn Abbey in Bedfordshire in May 2015.
Prior to the nuptials a family member said: “You can say that his parents are absolutely devastated. We won’t be going to the wedding.
“There is a lot more to this story than people know about – to do with his ex-partner.”
    Healing process
But Christian managed to heal the family rift by getting back on friendly terms with Beverley.
In an interview last year he revealed: “I have a great relationship with Beverley, and Beverley gets on with Geri, and Geri is great with Olivia and Olivia has a lovely relationship with Monty.
    “It’s totally harmonious.”
You can say that his parents are absolutely devastated. We won’t be going to the weddingFamily member
Monty is Geri and Christian’s seven year-old son. The couple live in a mansion in Oxfordshire with a stable for 14 horses, and Geri is a devoted wife.
She said in 2015: “I do cook for him, I do like to see that he’s happy. When I go to the Formula 1 races, I’m not about all the glamour.
“I never thought I’d meet the man who I knew I would be with always. I can be myself with him, I can breathe out. I don’t ever want to get divorced.”
    Trouble ahead

That relaxed family life is in contrast to the stressful world of Formula 1.
Christian, said to be worth £41million, is known to swear and has admitted to not being on friendly terms with rival Wolff.
He said: “I’ve never been a believer that you can be the best mate with your competitor. I think it’s dishonest.”
When Verstappen beat Hamilton to the 2021 F1 championship, he blurted out “Mercedes f****d up.”
Everything seemed rosy for Christian, who was awarded a CBE in December and was sung to by pals Gary Barlow, Sir Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood at his 50th birthday.
His Red Bull Team dominated last year’s F1 championship and are favourites to do the same this year.
I’ve never been a believer that you can be the best mate with your competitor. I think it’s dishonestChristian Horner
But the death of his mentor and Red Bull co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz in October 2022 is rumoured to have created a power struggle.
After the billionaire’s death, Red Bull drafted in a new board of directors to oversee the business, and former RB Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff was appointed chief executive.
Despite Red Bull enjoying its most successful season in F1 history in 2023, there was speculation of a rift between Horner and Helmut Marko – Red Bull GmBH’s motorsport advisor.
Rumours went as far as to suggest Horner was determined to get rid of Marko, 80, from the team, reports the Telegraph.
The former professional driver has overseen the Red Bull driver development programme since 2005 and was a driving force in bringing Verstappen to the team.
But speculation was played down, with Horner only acknowledging there had been a “small difference of opinion” between himself and Marko.
Red Bull is now investigating the allegations of “inappropriate behaviour” against Christian, with the internal inquiry reportedly leaving Geri in “floods of tears”.
She was standing by her husband last night, telling pals she does not believe gossip that has been swirling for days.

Red Bull issued a statement saying: “After being made aware of certain recent allegations, the company launched an independent investigation.
“The company takes these matters extremely seriously and the investigation will be completed as soon as practically possible. It would not be appropriate to comment further at this time.”

Fleeced by a gigolo, F1 factory romps, secret love children & a cocaine sting… scandalous secrets of supercar dynasties

MOST of us can only dream of being part of a supercar dynasty like Lamborghini or Ferrari. But life inside these ultra-rich families is far from simple – as they are haunted by hidden pasts and sordid scandals.

A DNA sample was secretly taken from Tonino’s daughter, Elettra Lamborghini
Just this week, Flavia Borzone, 35, was in court over her claim to be the secret lovechild of Tonino Lamborghini – the son of the luxury car firm’s founder.
Tonino is suing Flavia after she publicly alleged he had an affair with her mother in the late 1980s.
In the latest twist to the scandal, it has emerged that Flavia hired private detectives to collect a DNA sample from Tonino’s daughter, Elettra Lamborghini.
The private detectives snatched a straw, dubbed ‘the straw of a thousand secrets’, that was used by Elettra to drink a coffee.

Experts at the University of Ferrara tested the sample and found a DNA match between Elettra – who appeared in the reality show Geordie Shore – and Flavia.

A gigalo fleeced BMW heiress Susanne Klatten out of £5.9million after meeting her in an Austrian spa.
He went on to attempt to blackmail Ms Klatten, threatening to release naked photographs of them together if she did not give him more cash.
Swiss gigalo Helg Sgarbi was jailed for six years in 2009 for his cruel crimes against Ms Klatten and other women.
Ms Klatten initially handed Sgarbi £5.9million after he told her the Mafia was out for him. But he then took the scam a step further.

She said: “He asked me to meet him at the Holiday Inn in Munich. When I went there he showed me two photographs, in one of them I was naked and so was he.
“I could tell they were from a video and I was scared. There was a letter which said he would tell all to the press and my family. He wanted money and I had already given him seven million Euro.
“He just wanted more money and at that point I decided to go to the police because I realised I was being blackmailed.”
Ms Klatten’s father, Herbert Quandt, was also engulfed in scandal over his ties to the Nazi party.
Quandt’s BMW collaborated with the Nazis and employed around 50,000 forced labourers in its arms factories.
Roughly 80 slave labourers died per month at the plants – and many were executed.

The man who created Porsche was a devoted Nazi and pal of Adolf Hitler.
Ferdinand Porsche developed the V-1 flying bomb – which was nicknamed the doodlebug by Brits during the Blitz – and Nazi tanks.
He also worked closely with Hitler, receiving a contract from the dictator to create a ‘Volkswagen’, meaning a car for the masses.
The result of this alliance was the Volkswagen Beetle.
Shamefully, prisoners of were were used as slave labour at the Volkswagen car plant in Wolfsburg, Germany, while Porsche was general manager.
By 1945, Porsche had been arrested for war crimes as an SS officer and was languishing in a French prison of war camp.
Porsche was released from custody in 1947 after his family posted bail of one million French francs.
In 2022, the Austrian city of Linz announced that it planned to rename ‘Porscheweg’ street, which honoured the carmaker.
A report commissioned by the city senate said: “Porsche played a central role in the NS [National Socialism] war economy and actively promoted the forced labour of prisoners of war and concentration camp inmates.”

Lotus founder Colin Chapman died before he could be charged over a case that cost the taxpayer millions.
The British Government invested more than £50million in a scheme to build a sports car in Belfast.
However, £10million of the cash was not spent on the project, which was the brainchild of Chapman and an American car tycoon called John DeLorean.
The DeLorean Motor Company filed for bankruptcy in October 1982 – just a few days before DeLorean was arrested in a cocaine trafficking case. Undercover federal agents had filmed him agreeing to bankroll a cocaine smuggling operation.
He was later acquitted over the cocaine case as he argued police had entrapped him.
However, the mystery over the missing taxpayer cash sparked an investigation which led to the imprisonment of Lotus Group accountant Fred Bushell.

Split from sweetheart and losing love for the game… Marcus Rashford was a football superstar – so what happened?

MARCUS RASHFORD grew up watching his single mum Melanie work three jobs to support him, his brothers and sisters.Sometimes she would skip meals to ensure they had enough to eat, and the family needed free school dinners to make sure Marcus and his four siblings had at least one plate of hot food a day.

Fast forward 20 years and, now earning £325,000 a week at Manchester United, he could be forgiven for thinking money would solve all the family’s problems.
But instead the 26-year-old England striker has hit rock bottom.
Earlier this week, Rashford faced a £650,000 club fine after finishing a 12-hour tequila-fuelled bender at 3am, despite being due in training just a few hours later.
He rang in sick, claiming to be ill, which the club took at face value until social media footage showed he had been in a Belfast nightclub till the early hours.
    READ MORE MARCUS RASHFORD
At a meeting with manager Erik ten Hag and United director of football John Murtough on Monday, Rashford is understood to have admitted to having lost some of his love for the game.
In his personal life it seems he’s also struggling, and those problems are transferring onto the pitch.
    ‘Family rifts’
A source told The Sun: “Marcus has always had a close inner circle.
“His brothers are his agents and his advisers, but the truth is that there are cracks starting to appear.
    Most read in Football
“He has massive sponsorship deals and a buy-to-let empire of houses, plus his earnings on the pitch, and that means he’s an extremely wealthy young man.
“He’s in a unique position to make himself and his family financially secure for generations, but that’s not what’s happening.
“There have been arguments and tensions over money in his camp for months, and it’s not getting any better.
“Marcus is in the middle of it all feeling lost.
“He doesn’t know who to trust and his confidence on and off the pitch has taken a dive.
“His life’s become a mess and he’s at a loss as to how to make it better.”
Rashford’s older brothers, Dwaine and Dane, act as his agents, business advisers and gatekeepers.
They all live in the same leafy street in Wilmslow, Cheshire, along with mum Melanie.
The opulent lifestyle is a far cry from the modest terraced home in Withington, Manchester, where Marcus spent his early childhood years.
Marcus has been close to brothers Dwaine Maynard (left) Dane Rashford (right), but relations have strained recentlyCredit: Instagram
The footie idol’s family relationships have been strained since Dane, 31, was arrested for domestic battery in Miami in October.
Charges were dropped but the incident has left a lasting impact.
Dwaine has put his house up for sale, believing his security was compromised after Dane’s address was published online by police in Miami as part of the charge, and Dane has been increasingly sidelined.
Several sources have told The Sun that Dwaine, 40, and Marcus are barely on speaking terms, despite the siblings attending showdown talks with ten Hag together on Monday.
Rashford still socialises with childhood friends, and once said of his inner circle: “It has always been small and always will be, because I feel like I work best in that environment. I trust them.”
But some pals have abused that trust, with one using Marcus’ bank card to buy expensive items without his permission.
Others have let him down simply by failing to question his decisions to go out partying, drinking and gambling.
Another of Rashford’s anchors was school sweetheart Lucia Loi, who he split with last summer.
Their on-off relationship is believed to be over for good after Rashford was snapped walking into a Miami hotel with a leggy model at 5am.

And last September, he pranged his £700,000 Rolls-Royce outside United’s Carrington training ground.
It came after his school meals campaign to help feed Britain’s poorest kids during the holidays earned him an MBE.
A source said of private turmoil: “Marcus has wardrobes full of designer clothes, watches and jewellery, but he met Lucia when he had nothing.
“He knew she loved him for him, not his money.
“Now he feels girls he meets are just interested in his bank balance.
“He’s been earning a lot of money for a good few years now, but only really started flaunting it in recent times.
“Part of that was because of his involvement in the free school meals campaign.
“He was conscious people would criticise him for campaigning one day and being seen at the wheel of a Lamborghini the next.
“But his campaign was never about Marcus using his money to end child food poverty. That’s impossible.
“As he’s grown up, he has been encouraged by some advisers to enjoy his wealth, because he has worked hard for it.”
Trying to provide for his extended family has also caused rifts.
Rashford has a property empire encompassing at least a dozen homes he rents out, controlled by Melanie.
Our source said: “Some of them are regular houses with regular tenants, but other, larger properties in the posh Cheshire suburbs have been designated for family.
“Many of his family members grew up in modest homes in working class areas of Manchester, without much money.
“Even if Marcus lets them live rent-free, they still don’t have the means to pay heating and electricity in a huge mansion.
“Some kids in the extended Rashford family are still on free school meals, so it’s a massively complicated situation.
“Marcus is doing his best to help people.”
It is understood matters came to a head when Rashford did not attend the recent funeral of a relative, fearing that his presence would be too awkward as he would be approached and asked for money.
Recognising the need for expert help, Rashford and his team have approached numerous PR agencies and financial advisers, but have yet to find the right match.
These difficulties in his personal life have led to a crisis of confidence on the pitch.
Rashford was spotted at a nightclub in Belfast last week, hours before he was due in trainingCredit:
Earlier this season he was involved in a car crash close to United’s training groundCredit:
Just six months ago — after bagging an incredible 30 goals in one season — United fought off interest from Paris Saint Germain to persuade Rashford to sign a five-year contract worth £84.5million.
The Premier League star proudly said: “I joined Manchester United as a seven-year-old boy with a dream.
“That same passion, pride, and determination to succeed still drives me every time I have the honour of wearing the shirt.”
On his “relentless” determination to win more trophies, he added: “As a United fan all my life, I know the responsibility that comes with representing this badge.
“I will give everything to help the team.”
    ‘Not pulling his weight’
But a series of disinterested displays, netting just four goals this season, have seen the Old Trafford crowd start to get on his back for the first time since he burst onto the scene aged 18, scoring two goals in his February 2016 debut.
A multi-million pound boot deal with Nike had to be delayed due to his poor form and his brother’s arrest, and Rashford has also seen a string of pals — Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Brandon Williams and Anthony Elanga — leave the club.
He now finds himself regarded as a senior leader in the dressing room, but some reckon he is not pulling his weight and relationships with teammates are strained.
A source said: “Marcus doesn’t seem happy in training or in games.
“The team has been struggling and needs everyone pulling together.
“Some of the players are frustrated because they know just how talented Marcus is.
“They know they need him if they are going to win things.
“And some feel like he doesn’t care as much anymore.”
    Can Rashford turn it around?
    Yes, believes one source.
“Marcus is a really good guy.
“He’s actually quite shy, not the outgoing extrovert that people believe from all the designer clothes and Rolls-Royces.
“He’s achieved so much in his career so far and he’s only 26.
“But he’s the kind of person who has to hit rock bottom before he can start to climb back up.
“Like many players, he craves routine, people he can trust around him, stability and a cause he can support that connects him back to his roots.
“He had all that once, and now it’s a case of building it back up.
“He knows he needs to make changes in his life, but it’s up to him to do that.”
Insiders last night revealed Marcus had been more focused in training this week and seemed intent on answering his critics on the pitch.

Move over Ryan Reynolds… the unexpected A-list stars who own football clubs – from Oscar winners to Little Mix singer

FORGET flashy supercars and expensive Prada handbags, the new must-have celeb accessory is a football team. And the latest star to join the trend could be Robbie Williams, who has reportedly been backed by a consortium to make a bid to take over his lifelong club Port Vale FC.

The former Take That man, 49, was named club president at the weekend and hinted there could be a lucrative TV streaming series if a deal with him at the helm went through.
If approved, it could follow in the success of Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s takeover over at Wrexham and their famous Netflix show Welcome To Wrexham.
Robbie isn’t alone in vying for a slice of a football team – Sir Elton John became the chairman and director of Watford FC in 1976 and bankrolled them until 2002.
Until last year, TV chef Delia Smith and her husband owned 53 per cent – the majority share, which they acquired in 1996 – of Norwich City.

Little Mix star Jade Thirlwall was among more than 750 fans who invested in South Shields FC, which raised more than £280,000 for the club in 2020.
She was also named as an honorary president – alongside ex-politician David Miliband – and her involvement in the club hasn’t stopped there.

The Power hitmaker designed a limited edition football strip for the club and joined LGBTQ+ inclusion workshops at the stadium.
The club explained that naming Jade as an honorary president would increase the club’s profile “on a national and international scale, further putting the town on the map”.
It’s one of several investments Jade has made in her hometown, including putting money into a bar called Aerbia and the nightclub Industry.

“South Shields means absolutely everything to me, it’s my home… nothing beats the support and the loyalty and the community spirit that you feel in South Shields,” Jade said in 2022.
South Shields FC previously said Jade’s investment in the team was “just another example to show how committed such a global superstar is to not just the club, but her hometown”.

Rapper Stormzy joined a consortium with Crystal Palace’s former striker Wilfried Zaha and kit manager Danny Young to buy Croydon Athletic last year.
Fans were thrilled, including one eager supporter who told news site Inside Croydon: “This could be our ‘Wrexham moment.’”
The site reported the team was ‘purchased’ for “a token sum” but they believed Stormzy and his pals would “be providing the kind of investment which the club’s fans, players and backroom staff could, until now, only dream about”.
A statement from the club, which is in the ninth tier of English football, read: “The consortium will own, operate and develop their childhood hometown football club.”
Stormzy and Wilfried were said to have taken over the club to “do what’s right for the local community” after growing up near to the team’s ground, Mayfield Stadium.

Black Swan star Natalie Portman described becoming a co-founder of US women’s team Angel City FC in 2020 as “one of the most extraordinary adventures” of her life.
She joined multiple investors including venture capitalist Kara Nortman and gaming entrepreneur Julie Urhman, as well as celebs pals including Eva Longoria, Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Garner, America Ferrera and Uzo Aduba.
The Oscar-winner revealed she had decided to get involved after seeing how her children were inspired watching the US women’s national football team.
“Watching my son idolise players like Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan the same way he did Lionel Messi or Karim Benzema, I realised that amplifying female athletes could rapidly shift culture,” she told the Guardian.
At a summit last year, Natalie revealed her belief that Angel City FC and other women’s teams could lead to societal change and greater equality.
“If our boys look up to women like that, that’s how everything changes. And that’s what got me really excited,” she said.
The club – LA’s first professional women’s team since Los Angeles Sol folded in 2010 – started playing in the 2022 season.
Last year, they qualified for their first ever playoff, which they lost to OL Reign, and were also the focus of a three-part HBO documentary.

Famed for starring in the Creed and Black Panther film franchises, many were surprised when Hollywood star Michael B Jordan invested in AFC Bournemouth.
He’s part of a consortium led by American businessman Bill Foley, who purchased the club from Maxim Demin in December 2022.
The following year, Michael revealed getting involved with the Cherries was “crazy and amazing” but he knew there was “so much potential there”.
The actor admitted he had “wanted to get into sports” for some time and was busy arranging plans to make his first trip to Bournemouth, famed for its stunning beaches.
Michael explained that “the opportunity kind of presented itself” to him and he had been in discussions for “about a year” before agreeing to join the consortium.
He told the Tony Bellew Is Angry podcast: “We thought it through. A team that was in the Premier League and competitive, a great culture and people there in Bournemouth.
“And a franchise we felt like we could add value and try to help get the team over the hump.
“It’s cool. It’s a cool team. The players are extremely talented and good people. How can I add to an already amazing club and be a part of that culture?”

In 2021, Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria and the model Kate Upton joined a consortium to buy a stake in Mexican team Necaxa.
They bizarrely teamed up with former Arsenal ace Mesut Ozil, the former managers of Swansea FC and ex-owners of DC United to buy 50 per cent of the Liga MX champions.
A statement from the club said it was “a historic investment” for the team and also in Mexican football. They added: “This will be a turning point for us.”
The backers were said to have “extensive experience in soccer and in management of top clubs at an international level”.
Since the investment, the club has placed 14th in the league two years running.
Back in 2021, Eva – who has Mexican origins – shared a snap of herself in a Necaxa shirt and hat while sipping from a mug with their logo, which she captioned: “How I drink my coffee.”
She claimed to be “feeling so proud & delighted” by her investment and revealed the club would be auctioning its “first-ever NFT” back in 2021.

When comedy legend Will Ferrell was revealed to have an ownership stake in Los Angeles FC back in 2016 many thought it was a stunt for a film or a joke.
On The Late Late Show With James Corden in 2018, the Anchorman star even quipped: “I’m in charge of cleaning the stadium bathrooms.”
However, Will’s investment – part of “a very large ownership group” including Magic Johnson and YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley – was very much real.
The star confirmed: “I love watching it generally speaking…  It’s played all over the world. So many amazing players and so many top-flight leagues and hopefully MLS can be on par, eventually, with the European leagues.”
Will is regularly seen leading club chants, including in a 2019 video, and is often seen decked out in the team’s merchandise at matches.
It’s led to success, too, with the club winning their first MLS Cup title in 2022.

Lebron James is considered among basketball’s greatest-ever players, so in 2011, some were surprised by his decision to invest in an English football team.
He was revealed to have purchased a 2 per cent stake in Liverpool FC, reportedly for around £5.1m ($6.5m).
Just over a decade later, LeBron and business partner Maverick Carter exchanged their stake for a part-ownership of Fenway Sports Group (FSG) for an undisclosed fee.
The sportsman is believed to own around 1 per cent of FSG, which owns US baseball team Boston Red Sox, Fenway Park stadium, Liverpool FC and US hockey team the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Pep Guardiola’s lavish life off the pitch – from writing off car collection worth £460k to unusual £2.7m Manchester home

HE’S the football manager who has broken multiple records on the pitch – and has one more in his sights. With the second half of the Premier League season underway, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, 53, is gunning for a fourth title in a row, which will further cement his status as one of the league’s all-time greats.

Before becoming a head coach, he played for FC Barcelona, where he starred for Johan Cruyff’s legendary ‘Dream Team’, as well as subsequent sides like Roma and the Spanish national team.
But it’s his time as a manager where Pep has shone even more, notching up achievements including becoming the only manager to win the continental treble twice.
It’s helped Pep to amass an impressive fortune – he is reportedly worth £100million and paid £19.7million a year by the Blues.
Now also the subject of new BBC doc Pep Guardiola: Chasing Perfection, we look into the manager’s glamorous life away from the pitch with wife Cristina and their three children.

    Doomed fleet of cars
Despite having driven a range of enviable motors, Pep is renowned for not being the world’s greatest driver.
Last year, we reported that he has damaged cars collectively worth £460,000 since joining Man City in February 2016.
They included a £200,000 silver Bentley, GTX700, a £150,000 Range Rover, an £80,000 black Mercedes GLE and a £30,000 Mini Cooper.
A source said: “Pep is brilliant at many things but driving doesn’t appear to be one of them, he has struggled with the roads in Manchester and had a couple of bumps.”

The manager’s clumsiness when it comes to motors was further described by authors Lu Martin and Pol Ballus, in the 2019 book Pep’s City: The Making Of A Superteam.
“He has a reputation from his Barcelona days of being a hapless driver and this is his fourth car he has owned since coming to Manchester,” they wrote.
“His wing mirrors don’t survive for long and he’s also managed to fill a diesel Range Rover with petrol and mangle a silver Bentley.”

After winning the treble – the Premier League, UEFA Champions League and FA Cup – in 2023, Pep celebrated with a trip to Egypt with Cristina and their children Maria, 23; Marius, 21; and Valentina, 16.
They spent two days in Cairo and six days exploring Aswan and Luxor, where they visited the Sphinx and the Great Pyramid of Giza.
During the trip, Pep was showered with gifts including a replica of King Tutankhamun’s mask – and treated to lunch in a hotel overlooking the pyramids.
“We welcomed him with flowers, souvenirs and promotional material about various Egyptian tourist and archaeological sites,” Nisreen Othmanli, from Egypt’s tourism board, told Arab News.

In 2022, Pep celebrated winning his fourth Premier League title with a luxury holiday to Barbados with Cristina.
He was seen lapping up the waves on an enviable white sand beach before retreating to a high-end resort.
That same year, he was seen on a romantic boat trip, dining at fancy restaurants and browsing expensive shops, in Venice, Italy.
Ahead of joining Man City back in 2016, Pep took some time out with his family on a private yacht that they sailed along the Ibiza coastline.

In 2017, Pep splashed out on one of the most expensive properties sold that year in Greater Manchester.
He spent £2.7million on a luxury apartment in City Suites, which was in the “most desirable address” in Salford, next to a wealth of designer shops, high-end restaurants and wine bars.
As part of the deal, Pep had access to an 18-metre indoor spa pool, an exquisite spa and sauna facilities as well as a 24-hour gym.
Other benefits included two private parking spots, a 24-hour concierge team, dry-cleaning services and access to a private executive lounge.
Pep’s apartment is in a private section of the hotel, which is believed to occupy two of 16 floors. Guests can also rent rooms per night or opt for longer stays too.
It was considered an unusual option due to most footballers from Manchester City and United choosing to live in leafy Cheshire, known for its sprawling mansions in the countryside.
My wife is the best in the world at many things, but especially in fashion. So she says normally to me, don’t wear this or wear that, so I follow herPep Guardiola
Pep also bought an 8,000-square-foot mansion in Pedarlbes, which is the most expensive area in Barcelona, for £8.55million back in 2021 .
The stunning white home is nestled in the foothills of Sant Pere Màrtir mountain and boasts breathtaking views of the city.
It features a spacious living area, a high-end kitchen, a large private swimming pool and balconies across two of the storeys to take advantage looking out of over the picturesque landscape.
During a one-year work sabbatical in 2012, Pep lived in a luxurious New York apartment that cost £19,500-per-month and overlooked Central Park.
The building, located in Upper West Side, used to be the home of other celebs including X-Files actor David Duchovny and Barbara Streisand.
Inside the apartment was four bedrooms, bathrooms and a study, where it’s claimed the manager practised German before taking over at Bayern Munich.
    Wardrobe fit for a model
Pep has become known for his style at the Etihad Stadium, often sporting turtle necks and branded jumpers instead of always going for stuffy suits.
Among his outfits is his signature grey ‘hoodigan’, which was made by Theresa May’s favourite Italian designer Herno and reportedly costs £1,200.
The manager was seen wearing the oversized item – considered “lucky” by fans – 30 times between the start of the 2019 season and May.
Pep has also been pictured in ‘MDCR’ – referring to ‘Madchester’ – jumpers and an array of items with the letter ‘P’ on them.
Earlier this month, he revealed his fashion choices are made by his wife Cristina – whom he met while he was modelling designer gear in Serra Claret, a fashion store owned by her family in Barcelona.

Pep modelling in the Nineties for a Catalonian fashion brand
He said: “My wife is the best in the world at many things, but especially in fashion. So she says normally to me, don’t wear this or wear that, so I follow her.
“I am smart enough to know that when people are much much better than me, follow their advice and hers is really good.”
Perhaps he is playing down his own fashion credentials, however. In throwback snaps from the Nineties, Pep was seen modelling on the catwalk for Antonio Miró, while playing for Barcelona.
It was reported that every item from the Catalonian designer sold out just a few days after the event.
    Priceless watches

His love for fashion doesn’t stop there, Pep is also known to have an impressive collection of watches.
Among them was a Richard Mille (RM) RM 27-01 Tourbillon Rafael Nadal, which he was pictured with on a golf course, that costs around £590,000 due to there only being ten in the world.
Other ultra-expensive timepieces seen on his wrist include a £455,000 RM 022 Tourbillon Aerodyne, a £75,000 RM 010 ‘Manchester City’ and the RM 004 All Gray, which costs more than £150,000.
Last year Pep was seen wearing a RM 67-02 watch – they typically cost £228,000 but his timepiece was a United Arab Emirates edition, which is not for sale.
He has also been seen sporting a £55,000 Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Chronograph 5905P and a £12,500 Rolex Cellini.
    £500k wine collection
Pep is known to be a wine lover but splashed out a whopping £200k on Spanish reds in 2021Credit: Splash News
Away from the pitch, it seems the Man City boss is a secret fan of the reds… of the wine variety that is.
In 2021, it was reported that Pep forked out £200,000 on a Spanish vineyard’s finest vintage bottles and reportedly drinks a glass or two after football matches.
Friends told The Daily Star that he spent as much as £500,000 on fancy reds including the very best Riojas, prized Priorat and Dibera del Duero labels.

Alonso has grown a strong reputation in coaching for his innovative and attractive brand of football.
Whether he is the man to replace the departing Jurgen Klopp at Anfield remains to be seen, given there are a number of other candidates to consider.
But what about the man away from the pitch and tactics board?

Nagore has worked as a model, actress and fashion designer.
But one hilarious tale came while she worked as a hotel receptionist in Liverpool.
Ex-Reds ace and Alonso team-mate Peter Crouch recalled the first time he met Nagore.
Crouch confessed his love at first-sight reaction to meeting Nagore, before Liverpool team-mates including Jamie Carragher broke the news to him that she was with Alonso.
He said: “On signing for Liverpool I stayed at the Hope Street Hotel.
“On reception was a girl so good-looking I couldn’t quite believe she was smiling at me all the time.

“I told the lads in training, ‘honestly, she’s beautiful, I think I’ve got a shout here.’ Jamie Carragher called a few other senior players over, ‘tell them again, Crouchie.’
“So I did, ‘amazing. Dark-haired. Spanish-looking. I’m in there.’ It turned out she was Xabi Alonso’s partner.
“She was doing a bit of work to practise her language skills. He was nice about it. So was she. Carra less so.”
Despite their busy lifestyles, Alonso and Nagore have always been sure to make time to spend with one another.
While at Bayern Munich Alonso and Nagore were a regular sight during Oktoberfest celebrations.
Following Alonso’s retirement from football in 2017 the pair were spotted enjoying a walk on the beach during a family holiday to California.

Perhaps it is an echo of his sleek playing style, but whenever Alonso is pictured in a car it is one of elegant design.
And his fashion sense goes in the same direction.
Alonso loves getting behind the wheel of classic beamers, with a number of Instagram posts showing him driving a variety of classic cars.
During his time in Munich, Alonso modelled for Porsche and Adidas as they launched the Porsche Design Sport SS17 and sportswear range.

Cost estimates for that car today put it between £70,000 to £166,000.
In an interview with Mr Porter, Alonso – who has been likened to James Bond – is seen driving a Porsche 356 and not looking one bit out of place.
One thing Alonso can’t stand is the idea of tattoos on his body.
In a 2016 interview with Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Alonso said: “They [friends] know that they have zero chance with me.
“By the way, I am not against tattoos in principle. It may well be that this looks cool on others.
“But not for me. I just can’t imagine myself with piercings, chains or anything else. Obviously, I’m hopelessly old-fashioned.”

Alonso is also pretty fed up of the idea that footballers have bad taste in music and TV shows, saying: “It’s the eternal cliché that footballers don’t have taste.
“I think that’s pretty unfair. But I already know that, I’ve gotten used to it.”
He has previously raved about hit shows like True Detective and Fargo, describing them as “masterpieces”, while also revealing bands he has listened to.
The Shins, The Flaming Lips, The Delgados, The Velvet Underground and Lou Reed to name a few.
Special moments are like watch links
Despite his often suave appearance, Alonso is not one who often dresses to impress.
But when he does, he goes all out, and watches are the crown jewel of his wardrobe.
Alonso has likened special moments in his life and career to links in a watch.
He told The Journal: “For me, every special moment is bound to be linked to a particular watch, and whenever I put it on I’m transported back to that moment – such as when we won the Champions League with Liverpool or the World Cup with Spain.”
    Jurgen Klopp’s successor?By Dan King
XABI ALONSO ticks almost every box to succeed Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager, and if Bayer Leverkusen don’t let their lead at the top of the Bundesliga slip the case for him to do so will be irresistible.
The former Kop idol knows the club inside out after five seasons at Anfield and has made no secret of his enduring affection.
Alonso has already forged a reputation as an innovative coach playing an attractive, pressing style, usually in a fluid 3-4-2-1 formation.
He has taken Leverkusen from second bottom of the Bundesliga to seven-points clear at the top, putting them on course to be crowned German champions for the first time in their 120-year history.
It’s worth remembering that both Rafa Benitez and Klopp arrived at Anfield with proof they could dethrone clubs who dominated their leagues
For Alonso to do the same, in only his second season as a top-flight manager, would mark him out as something special.
It is that lack of long-term experience that would still make appointing him to replace Klopp a gamble.
But otherwise, he looks like the perfect candidate as Liverpool are forced to plan a future without the man who made them champions of England, Europe and the world.

Alonso shows off one of his many watches on a trip to London with Nagora
Watches in his collection include Rolex, Patek Philippe, Franck Muller, Audemars Piguet and Panerai – not that he has a particular desire to show off such accessories for fear of coming across as vulgar.
However, his favourite and most special member of his watch collection was a gift from Nagora on their wedding day – an IWC Ingenieur – worth £10,500 according to Watches of Switzerland.
For Alonso, the stunning watch “represents the fact that I had found a woman who thought about me, about what I like, and my personality.
“I don’t wear it much, just on really special occasions.”
Alonso says he likes IWC watches in general because “they’re not overly showy, attention-grabbing watches” and “have a certain sophistication without being flashy”.

The old saying goes: “You can tell a lot about a man from the shoes he’s wearing and the watch he has on.”
And it seems for Alonso, simple but beautiful efficiency is runs through everything he does. More

Football stars who broke Hollywood – from snogging A-list sex icon to Arsenal legend who refused to utter Spurs line

FOOTBALL is a notoriously short career, with most players forced to retire before they are 35.It’s not surprising, then, that some turn to the big screen to launch a second career – with many Premiership legends heading to Hollywood to make their fortune.

But the movie world is a tough nut to crack – and only a handful of footballers have made it.
Ian Wright is the latest to make movie news starring in the Netflix film The Kitchen, released this weekend.
He follows in the footsteps of fellow player Vinnie Jones whose hard man roles, in the likes of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, are now more memorable than his football.
Here we look at the football stars who have made it to Hollywood – and one who has a THIRD career as a singer.

    Vinnie Jones
Vinnie Jones famously broke into America by appearing in Guy Richie’s Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
The 59-year-old, from Watford, was still playing football when he was cast in the 1998 British gangster film.
Vinnie, who is worth at least £7million, used his reputation for aggression on the pitch to help him land hardman roles on the silver screen.
He was infamously pictured grabbing Gazza’s testicles during a 1988 game between Wimbledon and Newcastle.

But Vinnie is now best known for his acting after appearing in Hollywood hits such as Mean Machine, Gone in 60 Seconds and X-Men: The Last Stand.
    David Beckham
David Beckham made America his home in the final years of his footballing career after signing a £128million five-year contract with MLS team LA Galaxy in 2007.
And rubbing shoulders with Hollywood A-Listers obviously inspired Golden Balls to try out a bit of acting himself.
Just like Vinnie, Becks, 48, worked with Guy Ritchie on the 2017 blockbuster King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.

He had a cameo role as a grumpy knight in the film, which grossed £116million at the box office.
And he also made an appearance as a projectionist in Ritchie’s 2015 film The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
    Eric Cantona
Eric Cantona was never short of confidence during his footballing career.
And he was no different when he turned his hand to acting as he had no qualms about playing himself in the 2009 Ken Loach film Looking for Eric.
In 2003, King Eric was voted Manchester United’s best ever player for his time at the club between 1992 and 1997.

The Frenchman’s reputation took a hit when he kung fu kicked a fan at a Crystal Palace game in 1995.
However his popularity endured thanks to the 57-year-old’s charismatic personality.
That same charisma translated on screen when he played the role of a French diplomat alongside Cate Blanchett in the 1998 smash hit Elizabeth.
The move led to a slew of acting roles in his native France, most recently in the miniseries Inhuman Resources and the action thriller AKA.
He recently launched a singing career, releasing a single, The Friends We Lost, in May 2023.
    Ian Wright

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has become the latest footballer to bag a Hollywood role with his upcoming part in the Netflix film The Kitchen.
Wrighty, 60, is already a familiar sight on our TV screens thanks to his weekly appearances on Match of the Day.
And his latest appearance in The Kitchen, which is being directed by Hollywood A-Lister Daniel Kaluuya, is not the first time he has acted.
He also starred in the 2011 film Gun of the Black Sun and appeared as himself in the popular Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso.
But Hollywood has clearly not changed the former England striker after he reportedly refused to praise Tottenham on the show.
He apparently demanded the line “Tottenham are a great side” be changed as he knew if he said it he would never be able to return to north London.

Striker Stan Collymore once admitted in an interview that he wanted to be “the first black James Bond”.
And although the 52-year-old didn’t bag the 007 gig, he did land a top role alongside Sharon Stone.
In 2006 he appeared alongside the A-Lister in Basic Instinct 2, which grossed more than £30million.
In the film, Collymore, who played for Nottingham Forest and Liverpool in the 90s, shared a hot and steamy scene with Stone.
In it, the pair become frisky in a car before Collymore crashed into the River Thames.
Stone tipped Collymore for Hollywood greatness after his appearance in the film – but he never bagged another big role again.
    Zinédine Zidane

He looked very different in his Asterix role
Zinédine Zidane is widely known for his skills on the pitch – and the headbutt that marked the end of his career as a player.
However, he also starred in a couple of films, proving he has more about him than football alone.
The Real Madrid legend enjoyed a cameo role in the 2008 film Asterix at the Olympic Games, which grossed more than £100million.
The 51-year-old also played himself in the 2005 film Goal! The Dream Begins, starring alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham.
But Zizou reportedly became peeved when he was left waiting for Becks to turn up to film their scene together for the flick.

German midfielder Paul Breitner is one of only four players to have scored in two different World Cup final matches.
He also belongs to another tiny club of players who have starred in films during their careers.
The 72-year-old landed parts in two German films.
His first flick, a Spaghetti Western called Potato Fritz, was filmed in 1976 while he was still playing for Real Madrid.
Breitner took on the role of a bandit-hunting Sergeant in the film, which was panned by critics.
He appeared again on the silver screen with the 1983 German flick Der Zappler.
And he returned one more time with the 1986 film called Kunyonga – Mord in Afrika.
Sadly none of the movies enjoyed the kind of success he achieved on the pitch.
    Pelé

The Brazilian legend also starred in a bizarre TV series about aliens
Brazilian football icon Pelé was one of the first to make the jump from football to films.
He starred in the 1981 sports movie Escape to Victory, appearing alongside Michael Caine and Sylvester Stallone.
The legend also landed a role in Os Estranhos – a 1969 Brazilian TV drama about humans making first contact with aliens.
His successful acting career continued with a cameo role in the 2001 film Mike Bassett: England Manager – a mockumentary about a small-time football manager who is put in charge of the national team.
Pele, who died in 2022, also became the face of many brands in television adverts throughout his life.
He filmed commercials for American Express, Mastercard, Pepsi, Atari, Emirates, Louis Vuitton and others.

Footballing superstar Zlatan Ibrahimović made his big screen debut last year as a Roman warrior.
The Swede played a Roman called Caius Antivirus in the 2023 French-language film Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom.
Ibrahimović also recently appeared in the Italian TV comedy series Vita da Carlo.
