Are Dream Team managers sleeping on Ollie Watkins this season?

OLLIE WATKINS (£5.2m) was a top-tier Dream Team asset last season. The Aston Villa striker was widely selected throughout 2023/24 as he racked up 24 goals in all competitions (27 including the Conference League qualifying play-off) but he has not enjoyed the same level of popularity this season.Watkins helped Villa earn a point against ArsenalCredit: Dream TeamWatkins started the campaign slowly having rejoined his club team-mates late following England’s run to the Euro 2024 final. In fact, his minutes have dipped considerably this term because of Jhon Duran’s (£2.9m) playing time push. The England and Colombia forwards have played in tandem from time to time but Unai Emery generally replaces one with the other when making changes in the second half.Dream Team managers are understandably hesitant to back players who frequently depart the pitch with half an hour remaining but it might be time to review Watkins’ viability.A familiar sightCredit: GettyThe 29-year-old has banked 45 points in his last five outings in a productive spell that has featured three goals and three assists. There’s no doubt he benefited from Duran’s recent suspension but Emery will not have failed to notice the positive impact Watkins’ performances have had on the Villains’ results. Some Dream Team bosses may be surprised to learn that Watkins actually boasts a better strike rate this season compared to 2023/24 in the Premier League.Last season, he averaged a goal every 169.8 minutes whereas he’s rattling along at a rate of one every 154 minutes this term. Most read in FootballHowever, he’s lagging in terms of European points this season, a reflection of the fact Villa have upgraded from the Conference League to the Champions League.Watkins has ten league goals this seasonCredit: ReutersEmery’s side are currently fifth out of 36 in the Champions League table and therefore well placed to secure an automatic spot in the round of 16.They’re due to face Monaco on Tuesday before hosting Celtic in Gameweek 21, with a Premier League fixture against West Ham sandwiched in between. While well down on last season, Watkins’ current ownership of 12.9% is far from negligible – he’s the fourth most popular forward at the time of writing. But is he still being overlooked by too many?Solanke’s owners would do well to consider Watkins as a replacementCredit: ReutersThe news of Dominic Solanke’s (£4.3m) injury has left a sizeable chunk of gaffers in need of a replacement up top.Elsewhere, Alexander Isak (£6.3m) has been in prolific form of late but Newcastle’s lack of European commitments means he has just one fixture to fulfil in Gameweek 21.Granted, it’s a favourable match-up against Southampton but, generally speaking, two fixtures are better than one.READ MORE SUN STORIESOne possible tactic is to back Watkins for Gameweek 21 (vs West Ham and Celtic) and then replace him for Isak in Gameweek 22 (vs Fulham and Arsenal) to squeeze the schedule for all its worth. At the very least, Watkins should be monitored closely amid a sharp upturn in form.Score PredictorPlay Score Predictor with Dream Team this season!FREE to play£250 weekly prizePredict scores of five selected Premier League fixtures and earn points for accuracyMost points wins weekly cash prizePLAY NOW More

Captaincy options for Gameweek 20: Erling Haaland seeking hat-trick repeat against Ipswich

IT’S once again time for Dream Team managers to elect a captain for the Gameweek ahead. The gist of last week’s captaincy article was that gaffers who bet against Mohamed Salah (£8.1m) were likely to be rewarded and so it proved to be.Liverpool’s main man mustered just five points after being rested against Accrington Stanley and constricted by Nottingham Forest.Salah was guilty of a rare off-day against ForestCredit: GettyAll the alternatives we recommended – Bruno Fernandes (£6.2m), Alexander Isak (£6m) and Eberechi Eze (£4.9m) – registered at least twice as many points as Salah in Gameweek 19.But that was then and this is now.Should gaffers go against the Egyptian superstar again or trust he’ll bounce back in Gameweek 20 versus Brentford and Lille? The Bees boast a formidable home record but they have conceded plenty of goals at the Gtech this season.Liverpool’s spot in the Champions League round of 16 is essentially guaranteed but it would be a surprise if Arne Slot eased up in Europe; he’ll want to finish the league phase on top.All things considered, Salah is a considerably stronger captain for Gameweek 20 than he was in Gameweek 19 and that will be enough for many Dream Team bosses.Haaland took home the game ball last time he met IpswichCredit: GettyThere are still gaffers who refuse to strip Erling Haaland (£8m) of the armband and these loyalists have every reason to feel confident of substantial returns in the coming days. Most read in FootballManchester City are still making too many errors but they have scored more than their fair share of goals lately – 16 in their last four games to be precise.Pep Guardiola’s travel to Portman Road this Sunday and their big No9, fresh off a new long-term contract, will be hopeful of getting on the scoresheet having bagged a hat-trick against Ipswich in the reverse fixture back in August.Wednesday’s trip to the French capital to face PSG can hardly be considered a favourable match-up but the Ligue 1 giants have fared even worse than City in the Champions League this season.Alternatively, Phil Foden’s (£6.2m) backers might be tempted to double his points this coming Gameweek. The England international has banked 60 points from his last six outings via four goals and two assists.A man in formCredit: AlamyBold managers might seek a captain among Tottenham’s ranks.Spurs are languishing 14th in the table after their defeat in the North London derby but the Dream Team Stats Centre paints a brighter picture with several of Ange Postecoglou’s favourites among the top performers. With a double header against Everton and Hoffenheim (16th in the Bundesliga) in the diary, Dominic Solanke (£4.6m), Son-Heung-min (£4.8m) and Dejan Kulusevski (£4.3m) are all viable options for skipper, if a tad leftfield.Amad Diallo’s (£4.1m) hat-trick against Southampton has put him in the mix too.Manchester United’s saviour will surely start against both Brighton and Rangers.Hat-trick heroCredit: GettyIt’s important to note that popular captains Cole Palmer (£6.1m) and Alexander Isak (£6m) have just one fixture to fulfil in Gameweek 20.READ MORE SUN STORIESBoth are capable of massive double-digit hauls but it’s more logical to select a captain among the top stars set to pull double duty.Make sure to confirm your captain (and vice captain) for Gameweek 20 before Saturday’s 11am deadline.Score PredictorPlay Score Predictor with Dream Team this season!FREE to play£250 weekly prizePredict scores of five selected Premier League fixtures and earn points for accuracyMost points wins weekly cash prizePLAY NOW More

Transfer recommendations for Gameweek 20: Morgan Rogers & Phil Foden among smart options

THE return of the Champions League and Europa League means six clubs are set to pull double duty in Gameweek 20.Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Aston Villa, Tottenham and Manchester United will also play twice in Gameweek 21 so Dream Team managers would be wise to focus on this sextet for the remainder of January. You don’t need us to tell you that the likes of Mohamed Salah (£8.1m), Erling Haaland (£8m) and Bruno Fernandes (£6.2m) are well placed to provide points but allow us to present some transfer recommendations that aren’t quite as obvious.Back among the goalsCredit: AlamyPhil Foden (£6.2m)Manchester City’s No47 might be the biggest name who currently features in fewer than 10% of teams.Pep Guardiola’s side still have problems in defence but their attack once again looks difficult to resist.Foden has banked 60 points in his last six games via four goals and two assists; he’s not shy of a bonus point either.City are due to face Ipswich and PSG this coming Gameweek and they can’t afford to ease up in the Champions League with their spot in the knockout stage at serious risk. The England international is very expensive and so some Dream Team bosses might consider Savinho (£4.3m) a more realistic avenue into City’s midfield.Spurs StarsLook at their points, not the league tableCredit: ReutersIt might sound counterproductive to heavily rely on a team currently 13th in the table, fresh off an unconvincing FA win over non-league Tamworth and defeat in the North London derby, but hear us out.Ange Postecoglou’s side are far from the complete package but several players have made waves in Dream Team this season. Most read in FootballPedro Porro (£4.2m) and Dominic Solanke (£4.6m) rank fourth in their respective positions while Brennan Johnson (£3.7m), James Maddison (£4.1m) and Dejan Kulusevski (£4.3m) are all among the top seven midfielders.Antonin Kinsky (£2.8m) made fans sweat on a few occasions at the Emirates but the fact is the Czech goalkeeper has been a Dream Team asset for two Gameweeks and racked up 25 points.Spurs are due to play Everton, Hoffenheim (16th in the Bundesliga), Leicester and Elfsborg before the end of the month.Morgan Rogers (£3.5m)Cold celebration, hot formCredit: GettyThe Aston Villa midfielder is a class act who has offered excellent value for money since August.Rogers was the most transferred-out player prior to Gameweek 18 because of a suspension but now that he’s back to playing almost every minute that matters for the Villains, gaffers who ditched him should consider bringing him back into mix.Managers who wisely recruited the silky 22-year-old prior to Gameweek 19 were rewarded with a 17-point haul.He scored the winner against West Ham in the cup and brilliantly assisted the game’s only goal at Everton on Wednesday night, finished off by Ollie Watkins (£5m).Gameweek 20 isn’t all that favourable for Villa as it features away days to Arsenal and Monaco but the broader picture shows Rogers with four fixtures to fulfil at a time when most teams will play just twice – West Ham and Celtic are due in the midlands before the end of the month.Chris Wood (£3.9m)ProlificCredit: AlamyWe always try to include leftfield option and who better than Nottingham Forest’s talismanic target man for Gameweek 20?Granted, the New Zealander doesn’t have a midweek fixture but on current form he will back himself against lowly Southampton at the City Ground on Sunday.Wood has arguably been the most clinical finisher in the Premier League this season with 13 goals from 37 shots. For comparison, Cole Palmer (£6.1m) has scored 14 league goals from 74 shots.Assuming high-flying Forest are able to engineer plenty of chances against relegation-bound Saints, Wood could easily overtake several Golden Boot rivals come full time.READ MORE SUN STORIESWithout additional fixtures the 33 year-old striker’s long-term viability is limited but he’s a tempting option for Gameweek 20.Calling back to last Thursday’s transfer tips, our one-week punt suggestions, Eberechi Eze (£4.9m) and Daniel Munoz (£4.2m), combined for 38 points in Gameweek 19 – proof that there’s more than one way to play this game!Score PredictorPlay Score Predictor with Dream Team this season!FREE to play£250 weekly prizePredict scores of five selected Premier League fixtures and earn points for accuracyMost points wins weekly cash prizePLAY NOW More

formidable home record but their results have tailed off lately.Thomas Frank has had to contend with injury absentees at the back which have undermined his side’s efforts, despite the impressive output of Yoane Wissa, Mikkel Damsgaard and Bryan Mbeumo in attack. The West Londoners have only won one of their last eight games in all competitions – a 5-0 win away to Southampton – and defeat to Plymouth in the FA Cup caused some embarrassment.Liverpool have clipped a few hurdles of late having drawn to Manchester United and Nottingham Forest either side of a 1-0 loss to Spurs in the Carabao Cup.Even so, it’s difficult to look past Arne Slot’s league leaders on Saturday. Most read in FootballBrentford have earned plenty of points at the Gtech but only Saints, West Ham and Wolves have season and dealt a huge blow to the Gunners’ title hopes in the process.Mikel Arteta took revenge at Villa Park earlier this season and will be desperate for another three points to keep the pressure on Liverpool.Arsenal are the only team yet to lose a league game at home this season and they’ll be encouraged by Villa’s middling away record of 13 points from ten outings. But Unai Emery has overseen three straight victories this month and has previously been a thorn in the side of his former club.44% of Score Predictor users have opted for a 2-1 home win at this stage and we’re inclined to follow the herd on this occasion. Our Prediction: 2-1 to ArsenalArsenal boast a formidable home record having beaten Spurs in midweekCredit: EPAEverton v TottenhamIn what is one of the more surprising stats of 2024/25, Spurs boast the joint-best defensive record away from home in the Premier League at present. This coupled with the Toffees’ struggles in attack – only Southampton have scored fewer league goals this season – suggests a low-scoring away win.Or does it?Ange Postecoglou’s side may have shipped very few goals on the road but they’ve collected just ten points from ten away days so far.As for the hosts, the Goodison Park faithful will be worried that David Moyes’ previous stint on Merseyside means he’s not eligible for a new manager bounce after Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa. It was a relatively even, scrappy game but a loss nonetheless and so it’s still the case that Everton have mustered just three league wins this season. Our Prediction: 2-0 to SpursMoyes needs to improve Everton’s attack to ward off relegationCredit: PAIpswich v Manchester CityThe Tractor Boys have shown more fight than Leicester and Southampton since earning promotion to the top flight but they’ve pocketed just seven points at Portman Road.Recent home wins over Chelsea and Bristol Rovers gave the season ticket holders something to cheer but they’ll be up against it when the defending champions come to town. Not that Pep Guardiola’s troops are at their best right now, far from it.A late capitulation at Brentford proved that Man City are not fully out of their slump – they are still guilty of curious mistakes at the back. The problem for Kieran McKenna is that Erling Haaland, Phil Foden and company have been back among the goals of late with 16 in their last four outings. The Norwegian poacher bagged a hat-trick in the reverse fixture back in August. Our Prediction: 3-2 to Man CityHaaland was ruthless against Ipswich earlier in the campaignCredit: GettyChelsea v WolvesStamford Bridge plays host to the Monday night game this Matchweek. The Blues find themselves 13th in the form table (last six games) having drawn with Everton, Bournemouth and Crystal Palace around defeats to Ipswich and Fulham.Nicolas Jackson is now missing chances he was converting throughout the first third of the campaign with Cole Palmer having to shoulder too much responsibility, as was the case last season.Still, the bigger picture is that Chelsea are fifth while Wolves are 18th – the latter have conceded the most goals this term.Enzo Maresca watched his side waltz to a 6-2 victory over Molineux Phil Foden banks 60 points in six games to set Dream Team managers straight

PHIL FODEN (£6.2m) is Dream Team’s most in-form asset right now.The Manchester City midfielder acquired this status when he scored a brace against Brentford on Tuesday night.Back to his best?Credit: Dream TeamThe reigning PFA Player of the Year converted a trademark Kevin De Bruyne (£5.6m) cross with a deft finish before he doubled his side’s lead in West London with a predatory follow-up 12 minutes later.Unfortunately for Pep Guardiola’s troops, they weren’t able to hold firm for the win as the Bees mounted a late comeback to earn a 2-2 draw. But when all was said and done, Foden was the big winner from a Dream Team perspective as he notched 19 points, his best haul of the season so far.Last week, we published an article regarding how the England international was “quietly gaining momentum” but there was nothing stealthy about his Gameweek 19 success.Prior to his brace at Brentford, he added five points to his tally thanks to an assist during City’s mauling of Salford in the FA Cup.Foden has leapt up the rankings in recent weeksCredit: AFPAt the time of writing, only Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo (£2.8m) has earned more points than Foden this Gameweek.More broadly, City’s No47 has now banked 60 points from his last six outings in a fruitful spell that has included four goals, two assists, eight shots on target, four big chances created and six bonus points.Injuries, illness and rustiness meant Foden simply wasn’t viable throughout the first third of the campaign but he’s turning heads at a rapid rate now. Most read in FootballFew players have such a high ceiling when in full flow. The defending champions still don’t look right, as evidenced by their late capitulation at the Gtech Stadium.Guardiola’s troops are still giving up far too many chances and Dream Team bosses who have stuck by the likes of Josko Gvardiol (£4.3m), Rico Lewis (£3.1m) and Manuel Akanji (£3.6m) have been punished for their stubbornness. But they haven’t lacked in attacking returns lately and this trend seems likely to continue in Gameweek 20.Guardiola can’t afford to rest key players in the Champions LeagueCredit: GettyMan City are due to face Ipswich on Sunday before travelling to PSG on Wednesday night. The French giants have desperately struggled in the Champions League this season and are currently 25th in the table of 36.Foden doesn’t come cheap at £6.2m, only three players cost more at the time of writing, but he’s forced himself back into the conversation with a flurry of points. It will be interesting to see how much his current ownership of 9.1% increases before Saturday’s 11am deadline.Score PredictorPlay Score Predictor with Dream Team this season!FREE to play£250 weekly prizePredict scores of five selected Premier League fixtures and earn points for accuracyMost points wins weekly cash prizePLAY NOW More

Many of Dream Team’s most popular defenders are floundering but is it time to panic?

DREAM TEAM managers are facing a crisis.Points are drying up for many of the game’s most popular defenders and it’s not all that clear whether gaffers should stick or twist.Slim pickingsCredit: Dream TeamTrent Alexander-Arnold (£5.7m) remains the most selected defender with an ownership of 26% but he’s immune to this trend because he capitalised on a favourable FA Cup match-up with Accrington Stanley with a goal and clean sheet for a 17-point return on Saturday. But for William Saliba (£4.9m), Virgil van Dijk (£5.1m) and Josko Gvardiol (£4.3m), the second, third and fourth most popular defenders, it’s been slim pickings of late.Arsenal’s French centre-back has mustered nine points from his last four outings while Liverpool’s captain has scraped eight points together from his three most recent games.Manchester City’s Croatian left-back has registered 17 points from his last five appearances. It’s a similar story for Rico Lewis (£3.1m), Noussair Mazraoui (£2.9m), Diogo Dalot (£3.2m) and Andy Robertson (£4m), who are all within the 15 most selected defenders at present.Gvardiol’s returns have dried up during Man City’s slumpCredit: GettyGabriel (£5m) is exempt because he scored against Manchester United last time out, his fifth goal of the season, but his owners received just six points from his previous three outings.Pedro Porro (£4.2m), Lewis Hall (£4.4m) and the aforementioned Alexander-Arnold are the only (relatively) popular defenders who have provided healthy returns lately. That’s the state of play but how should Dream Team bosses react? Most read in FootballThe first thing to note is that Gameweek 19 is not yet complete.A clean sheet for Arsenal in the North London derby this evening will put Gabriel and Saliba’s backers at ease.Ruben Amorim will be hopeful of a stress-free win at home to Southampton on Thursday night given Saints are rooted to the bottom of the table with just six points to their name.Gabriel and Saliba have been short on clean sheets latelyCredit: GETTYFurther blanks for the Gunners and Red Devils will really set the cat among the pigeons.Gaffers will be understandably reluctant to ditch most of the aforementioned defenders because the upcoming schedule favours Arsenal, Man City, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Man United and Tottenham. These six teams have four fixtures to fulfil across Gameweeks 20 and 21 because of Champions League and Europa League commitments – the other 14 clubs will play just twice in the same time frame.UPCOMING DOUBLE GAMEWEEKSMANCHESTER CITY vs Ipswich (a) & PSG (a), Chelsea (h) & Club Brugge (h)ARSENAL vs Aston Villa (h) & Dinamo Zagreb (h), Wolves (a) & Girona (a)LIVERPOOL vs Brentford (a) & Lille (h), Ipswich (h) & PSV (a)ASTON VILLA vs Arsenal (a) & Monaco (a), West Ham (h) & Celtic (h)MANCHESTER UNITED vs Brighton (h) & Rangers (h), Fulham (a) & FCSB (a)TOTTENHAM vs Everton (a) & Hoffenheim (a), Leicester (h) & Elfsborg (h)There are plenty of points on offer there for Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs on paper but gaffers stacked with Man United and Man City defenders will probably be more keen on replacements.Mazraoui is a tackle machine but his points have dwindled in recent GameweeksCredit: RexPep Guardiola’s side just aren’t right at present, particularly at the back where they’re still conceding far too many clearcut opportunities.14.1%-owned Lewis didn’t play a single minute in Gameweek 19.Whereas Man United haven’t kept a clean sheet since December 1st.READ MORE SUN STORIESDepending on what happens at the Emirates tonight, Porro is likely to be a popular recruit ahead of the Gameweek 20 deadline. While others have floundered, Spurs’ right-back has notched 31 points from his last four games and is up to third in the defensive rankings.Score PredictorPlay Score Predictor with Dream Team this season!FREE to play£250 weekly prizePredict scores of five selected Premier League fixtures and earn points for accuracyMost points wins weekly cash prizePLAY NOW More

Bryan Mbeumo and six other overachievers who have ripped up Dream Team’s blueprint this season

THE 2024/25 Dream Team campaign is halfway complete. Now is a great time to take stock of the season so far and who better to highlight than the heroic overachievers?Salutes all round for the overachievers!Credit: Dream TeamMohamed Salah (£8.1m), Erling Haaland (£8m) and Bukayo Saka (£6.6m) are leading the way in terms of overall points but the truth is that gaffers expect nothing less from the game’s most expensive assets. The following players are those who have defied the odds and made a real difference to the overall leaderboard.Bryan Mbeumo (£4.8m)Brentford’s main man has punched well above his weight with 13 goals from his first 20 league outings. At the time of writing, Salah and Haaland are the only players ahead of him in the race for the Golden Boot.Mbeumo has racked up 197 points to put him third among Dream Team midfielders with only Saka and Cole Palmer (£6.1m) above him in the rankings. That the Cameroon international has outperformed the likes of Bruno Fernandes (£6.2m), James Maddison (£4.1m) and Luis Diaz (£4m) without European fixtures to pad out his schedule is testament to his electric domestic form.Keeping Salah and Haaland honest in the Golden Boot raceCredit: RexMatz Sels (£3.4m)No list of surprise packages would be complete without a Nottingham Forest representative.Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have performed well above expectations and find themselves third in the table at the halfway stage – a remarkable effort from the club that finished 17th in 2023/24.Most read in FootballChris Wood (£3.9m), Ola Aina (£3.5m) and several others are worthy of individual praise but it’s Sels who makes the cut by virtue of the fact he currently ranks fourth in his position. The 32 year-old Belgian is one of just four goalkeepers to have reached the 100-point mark.Sels has registered nine clean sheets this season, a tally only bettered by David Raya (£4.4m).One of many Forest heroes this seasonCredit: AlamyMatheus Cunha (£4.9m)Some gaffers wouldn’t have been surprised by the Brazilian forward’s returns as he flourished in spells last season.Even so, few would have predicted Cunha would be averaging 8.6 points-per-game at the halfway stage – a rate bettered by Salah, Haaland and Alexander Isak (£6m) among strikers (minimum three appearances). His efforts appear especially admirable when measured against Wolves’ season as a collective. The Molineux residents are languishing in 17th having conceded the most league goals (45).Cunha has notched ten goals and four assists but that only tells half the story. He also ranks in the top three in his position for bonus points and big chances created.A class actCredit: GettyLewis Hall (£4.4m)Dream Team bosses have flocked to Isak and Anthony Gordon (£5.2m) amid Newcastle’s upturn in form, with good reason, but the Magpies’ tireless left-back deserves plenty of credit too.Hall has amassed 67 points from eight outings since the start of Gameweek 15.This productive burst has propelled him up to sixth in the defensive rankings – he’s now just three points shy of Gabriel (£5m) and six short of William Saliba (£4.9m).Among defenders, the ex-Chelsea youngster ranks joint-fourth for clean sheets, joint-fifth for assists, and sixth for bonus points.Hall is climbing the rankings one Gameweek at a timeCredit: GettyBrennan Johnson (£3.7m)The Wales international would have been well down the list of viable Tottenham assets ahead of Gameweek 1 but his current ownership of 21.5% makes him the tenth-most popular player in the game.Johnson has found his scoring boots this season with 12 goals to his name in all competitions. He scored in six consecutive games earlier in the campaign during a particularly fruitful run that resulted in a massive popularity surge. The aforementioned Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski (£4.3m) have provided healthy returns this season but Dream Team bosses would have expected those two to provide their fair share of points.Johnson’s success has come as a surprise, not least to the subsection of Spurs fans who were frustrated by the winger’s performances in the opening weeks of the campaign.A total of 183 points places him fifth among midfielders.Johnson is Tottenham’s top scorer this seasonCredit: GettyDaniel Munoz (£4.2m)Another player who has thrived despite a lack of European commitments and his team’s broader struggles.Crystal Palace’s results have improved recently but they remain 15th in the table, such was their disastrous start.Munoz is a threat going forward and a monster in defence. The Colombian
