Coventry 3 Man Utd 3 (2-4 pens): Red Devils into FA Cup final but Ten Hag faces big pressure after embarrassing meltdown

PROBABLY only Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United could manage to book a place in an FA Cup Final while hanging their heads in shame. But while United eventually confirmed a second consecutive all-Manchester final in this competition, the way they chucked away a three-goal lead against Championship Coventry was extraordinary even by their standards of low farce.Rasmus Hojlund secured Man Utd’s place in the FA Cup Final with the winning penaltyCredit: PABen Sheaf was left devastated after he skied the crucial Coventry penaltyCredit: GettyScott McTominay prodded home from close range to break the deadlockCredit: GettyUnited owners Avram Glazer and Sir Jim Ratcliffe celebrating after the penalty dramaCredit: AlamyAnd when Coventry’s Victor Torp netted in the 120th minute it looked like the most ridiculous comeback in Wembley history until VAR Thomas Bramall ruled it out for a marginal offside in the build-up. Yet United came from behind in a nerve-shredding penalty shoot-out as Coventry skipper Ben Sheaf blazed his effort horribly off-target to send the Red DEvils through.Mark Robins, who once saved Sir Alex Ferguson’s skin with a famous FA Cup goal, watched his Sky Blues roar back with three goals in the final 20 minutes – an Ellis Simms strike, a deflected Callum O’Hare effort and a controversial penalty converted by Haji Wright. United were roundly booed by their own supporters at the end of normal time, as Coventry’s delirious supporters partied like it was 1987, when their club won the Cup in a classic final against Tottenham.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLTrust United to make a drama out of a cakewalk.Ten Hag’s team have tossed away two-goal leads on several occasions this season but to be 3-0 up against second-tier opposition with 20 minutes to play and to lack the game-management to see it out was criminal. The only wonder was that Ten Hag’s assistant Steve McClaren didn’t put up an umbrella on the Wembley touchline in bone-dry weather, like the good old days of his England reign. First-half strikes from Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire and a Bruno Fernandes effort early in the second period had United in cruise control. Most read in FA CupBEST FREE BET SIGN UP OFFERS FOR UK BOOKMAKERBut as soon as Ten Hag started making subs, United switched off and Coventry produced a stirring late fightback to inject some ridiculous drama into a semi-final weekend which had looked like falling completely flat. Still, despite their slapstick shoddiness, United did book a third domestic final appearance in four attempts under Ten Hag.’I don’t like what I see’ – Disgusted Roy Keane blasts Man Utd and says they ‘looked like the Championship team’The two Manchester clubs had never met in a major cup final until last year, when an Ilkay Gundogan double completed the second leg of Pep Guardiola’s Treble in a 2-1 victory over their crosstown rivals. United won the Carabao Cup last season and had booked their place in this semi-final with an epic victory over Liverpool in the previous round. So while United’s Premier League form has been shoddy this season, and their Champions League campaign was a shambles, the Cup has at least brought consolation. Even the unlikely scenario of a final victory over City is unlikely to save Ten Hag’s job – after all Louis Van Gaal was axed days after United last won this competition in 2016. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and a couple of Glazer brothers were here to witness a victory which was nowhere near as comfortable as it ought to have been. The Sky Blues fans made a hell of a racket on their big day out and Robins’ side responded in kind for the final quarter of the match to give United a major panic attack. With five centre-backs out injured, Ten Hag started Casemiro alongside Maguire in defence. But the Premier League ought to have scored at least a couple before they did open the scoring midway through the first half. First, Andre Onana’s long punt was headed down by Fernandes for Rasmus Hojlund, who got his feet in a tangle and took an air-shot. Then a long diagonal from Casemiro fed Marcus Rashford, who cut in from the left but meekly rolled his shot wide of the far post. But then Diogo Dalot, United’s player of the season, dashed down the right and delivered a dangerous low centre and McTominay made a darting run to meet it and poked home at the back stick. Coventry were offering very little, the gulf in class all too apparent for more than an hour. Robins’ side finally threatened the United goal in the 39th minute when Josh Eccles beat Aaron Wan-Bissaka down the right and crossed low towards Sims only for Dalot to make a goal-saving interception. But just before the break, United looked home and hosed. Bruno Fernandes ended the FA Cup semi-final a man bemused as to what he had been a part of.
No doubt knowing it would be he would have to try and explain it all again.
Rarely have a team slunk away from this stadium with a feeling of embarrassment having just reach an FA Cup Final.
The next time Fernandes turns up at the home of football he wants to be heading up those metal steps and picking up silverware.
Nothing less will do for the captain of Manchester United.
But he knows they have not got a hope of gaining revenge on this cross town rivals Manchester City if this is what they are going to deliver.

    Copy linkCopiedOh no, Onana
Andre Onana admits getting through today was a ‘mixed feeling’.
And he says he and his teammates will return to Wembley next month and WIN the trophy.
He was booked in the shootout – after being booked in normal time. But he WON’T be suspended for the showpiece final.
He told BBC: “It’s a mixed feeling. We went through, that’s why we came here.
“It was a tough game at the end. We were in control. After so many individual mistakes we conceded three goals. The most important thing is to win. We have to look forward to the coming games.
“Somehow we lost control of the game.
“We are Man Utd. We must win. We feel good, we feel happy to be in a final. We’ll come back here to win.
“The most important thing is the victory. We’re in the final, that’s what matters.”
    Copy linkCopiedLastly from Robins
On losing out on penalties and the historic afternoon, Robins concluded: “There’s always a bit of gamesmanship [in penalties]. We needed to score the five goals. We scored the five in the summer and missed the sixth and Luton went up. It feels like a kick in the teeth.
    “I’m really proud of them.
“We’ve just said to them they’ve put themselves right up there in the history of the football club. People will talk about this game for a long time.”
    Copy linkCopiedFinally from ETH
He says his side have a great chance to win the final against Manchester City, despite playing the best football team in the world.
He finished: “I want to win it. I’m sure we have a good chance to win this final, although we play the best team in the world.
“We do have a chance though. We showed that this season.
“This season has had many ups but also many downs. Winning the FA Cup doesn’t make it successful, we want to win more.
“We have been in three finals in two years, which is good, but we had a lot of setbacks this season.
“We’ve had a lot of injuries and hopefully those players can be back for the final. If we go with a squad who believe then we have a chance to win a trophy.”

    Copy linkCopiedRight mentality
Ten Hag would also praise his side’s mentality and said they have character which they showed…
He continued: “We can’t say this group doesn’t have the right mentality because they showed character today, but in the final part there was a lack of discipline.
“We have to keep the ball, keep making passes, go for goal and then also be strong in defence. It’s about communication and we have to improve on this.
“It was about mentality in that moment. You have a plan and have full confidence so I told them to stick to the plan.
“I had confidence we would win the shootout. Normally Casemiro scores, we train them very well.”
    Copy linkCopied’Resilience’
Erik ten Hag claims his side showed RESILIENCE to win the penalty shoot out.
And he called it a ‘strange game’ having thrown away a three-goal lead.
He told ITV: “It was an incredible game, a strange game too. We had total control for so long and then gave it away in the last part of the game. We did show resilience to win the penalty shootout.
“We had control for 75 minutes and have to give Coventry a compliment for what they did in the last 15 minutes.
“We have to improve. We talk a lot about this. First you have to put yourself in a winning position but then you have to take it over the line. In these moments we are making mistakes and not keeping our responsibilities.”
    Copy linkCopiedMore from Robins
The Coventry boss was gutted that VAR ruled out the club’s huge moment, adding: “You get to penalties and it’s a lottery. You don’t hold anything against anyone if they show the courage to take one in a cauldron.
“It’s a toe nail. Those lines are the bane of our life. You don’t get a chance often to go to an FA Cup final and we were really really close.
“We have to pick ourselves up because there’s a game on Wednesday.”

    Copy linkCopiedMark Robins reacts
The Coventry boss hailed his ‘incredible’ team for their comeback and admitted he ‘couldn’t be prouder’.
He said: “We conceded too many poor goals. We knew we had to make changes which we did at half-time. We spoke about not having regrets. We started to look more of a threat.
“To come back from 3-0 down is incredible. Some good quality football. We were really disappointed at the end.
“We hit the bar and had a goal disallowed. It was a really difficult game. We lose Tavares to injury and had to make another change.
“If you can attack them you can really hurt them. I can’t be prouder of them. They did fantastically well. I think we’ve made Coventry proud.

And also said winning just the FA Cup doesn’t mean it’s been a successful season.
He told ITV: “When they scored a goal we thought it might be offside, we couldn’t tell from the front.
“We put ourselves in a difficult position and should have killed it earlier but we didn’t. We have to do so much better.”

GAME ON AT WEMBLEY – O’HARE SCORES WITH 12 MINUTES TO GO!

    75. United keeping the ball to take the sting out of things at the moment.
Dalot and Antony combine before the latter tries to find Eriksen with a ball in behind but it’s overhit and scooped up by Collins.

    73. United change:

    OFF: Mainoo
    ON: Eriksen

    71. Well then…
It’s a good move down the right. O’Hare picks out Tavares on the Coventry right.
He looks up and picks out Simms in the middle with a cross. He’s virtually all alone, eight yards out. The ball is just behind him but he swings his right foot at it and powers it into the bottom corner.
It’s actually off his SHIN. But he won’t mind. Neither the 36,000 behind the goal who go berserk.

COVENTRY HAVE ONE BACK – IT’S ELLIS SIMMS!

    70. One of those funny moments (except when it happens to you).
O’Hare collects the ball inside the box and after taking a touch, Maguire steps across and uses strength to push him off the ball for a United goal kick.
Rob Jones points for a goal kick and the fans behind the goal cheer hugely, thinking a penalty has been awarded.

    68. A rare effort at goal for Coventry.
A cross from the right picks out O’Hare in the box ahead of the near post. He throws himself at it in a flying motion but misses the target by quite some way.

    65. United change:

    OFF: Garnacho
    ON: Antony

He’s not happy about it again, Garnacho. Someone hide his phone, quickly!

    Copy linkCopiedCoventry 0-3 Man Utd
    64. Another Coventry corner as a cross from the right takes a wicked deflection into the side of the net.
Again, it’s curled onto the head of Maguire who heads away with ease.

    63. Mark Robins makes a triple substitution:

    OFF: Kitching, Eccles & Latibeaudiere
    ON: Tavares, Binks & Torp

    Copy linkCopiedCoventry 0-3 Man Utd
    63. Maguire should have two to his name!
The deep free kick finds Casemiro all alone who heads back into the danger area.
The break of the ball lands to Maguire 10 yards out and he stabs an effort at goal but sends it over the bar!

    62. Free kick United. Midway inside the Coventry half as the big men push forward.

    Copy linkCopiedCoventry 0-3 Man Utd
    60. Coventry win a corner from the restart.
Again, United deal with it well.
    Copy linkCopiedCoventry 0-3 Man Utd
    59. A contrast in quality and it was shown there.
Coventry with a chance to get one back when a deep cross finds Wright. He takes his time, dithers on it and allows United to get back into a shape.
The move eventually breaks down after some slow play and it’s cleared to Garnacho who springs the counter.
Fernandes and Rashford involved before the former picks the ball up inside the box and on his left foot, he works some room and smashes low and hard at goal, sneaking in at the front post.
A Manchester derby final it is – again!

3-0 – BRUNO FERNANDES WRAPS UP THIS SEMI FINAL!
    Copy linkCopiedCoventry 0-2 Man Utd
    56. The marathon man has made it for the second half – just as he’d hoped!
A respectable four hours, 30 minutes and 52 seconds it took Sir Jim Ratcliffe to complete the race this morning.

    Copy linkCopiedCoventry 0-2 Man Utd
    56. Defended easily.
United almost spring a counter but Fernandes’ ball forward is poor and easily cut out.
    Copy linkCopiedCoventry 0-2 Man Utd
    55. Great defending from Wan-Bissaka to stop van Ewijk getting onto the end of a cross.
He touches it behind for a corner to Coventry in front of their own fans.
    Copy linkCopiedCoventry 0-2 Man Utd
    54. Coventry just snapping into the tackle a bit more now.
Fernandes and Garnacho both sent flying in the same move as the Sky Blues fans behind the goal start to get excited.
    Copy linkCopiedCoventry 0-2 Man Utd
    52. United lose the ball cheaply on the edge of their own box and Coventry are pressing higher here.
The ball ricochets to Sheaf who snatches at a shot 25 yards from goal which rolls harmlessly wide.

    Copy linkCopiedCoventry 0-2 Man Utd
    50. Fernandes lays it off to Rashford to strike from 25 yards out at a better angle but it’s blocked and Coventry clear.
    Copy linkCopiedCoventry 0-2 Man Utd
    49. United launch a counter attack through Rashford, who drives 45 yards up the pitch.
He cuts in from the left when approaching the box and is brought down.
22 yards from goal but wide on the left. Probably too far left for a shot at goal.

    Copy linkCopiedCoventry 0-2 Man Utd
    47. So very nearly three!
Fernandes picks the ball up on the left corner of the 18-yard box and works the ball onto his right foot.
He sends a dipping, curling attempt towards the far post and it misses the post by a matter of centimetres. It had Collins scrambling anyway!
    Copy linkCopiedCoventry 0-2 Man Utd
    46. It does look like a change of shape for the Championship side, going to a back four.

I’m in a rush,’ Sir Jim Ratcliffe says live on BBC after running Marathon as he thinks Man Utd have ‘already kicked off’

SIR JIM RATCLIFFE declared he was in a “rush” after mistakenly thinking Manchester United had already kicked off at Wembley after he’d completed the London Marathon. The 71-year-old billionaire recently completed his purchase of a 25 per cent stake in the club and takeover of football operations.Sir Jim Ratcliffe completed the London Marathon before heading to watch Man UtdCredit: ReutersThe Utd chief told BBC he was in a ‘rush’ to get to Wembley as they interviewed him afterwardsCredit: BBCSir Jim was spotted in his seat at Wembley just after half timeCredit: BBCHe continues to make a number of changes off the pitch, while United are hoping for some joy on it this afternoon. The Red Devils face Coventry City at Wembley in the FA Cup semi final this afternoon, where the winner will face holders Man City after they beat Chelsea yesterday. However, Ratcliffe joined the thousands of other runners in the capital this morning for the London Marathon and recorded a personal best time of 4hrs 30mins 52secs.And after Ratcliffe had crossed the finish line, he joined the BBC for a quick chat before making the dash to Wembley.READ MORE ON FOOTBALLRatcliffe started his conversation with BBC presenter Gabby Logan with: “I’m in a rush… I need to get to the match.”Even though he still had 45 minutes to go until the action got underway at Wembley, he then mistakenly said: “They’ve already kicked off haven’t they, so I’ll have to be quick.”After revealing that he recorded a time of around four-and-a-half hours, he then got down to discussing a potential Manchester derby against City in the FA Cup Final. After awkwardly mishearing Logan refer to Coventry as underdogs, he thought that she was talking about the Red Devils’ chances against their neighbours. Most read in FA CupCASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO WELCOME OFFERSRatcliffe said: “We are definitely the underdog. Unfortunately. Not for long though.”Asked to compare running a marathon to his progress at United, he replied: “There are some parallels, I have to say. It just sort of requires some grit.Sir Jim Ratcliffe says Man Utd’s ‘Wembley of the North’ could be 100,000-seat mega-stadium if they leave Old Trafford“Always, in the marathon, after 30k it gets quite difficult. “I don’t think we are quite at 30k in the football yet, we’ve still got some way to go.”When asked if it equated to a half marathon, he replied: “No, not even there really… probably only the first 10k.“But it’s a long journey really the football because one of the biggest problems is that you get these new guys to come into the team, really capable people, but they are all on gardening leave.“So it takes you six months, a year or 18 months – it’s a real issue in football. “They can’t work for us, the fans are impatient and I have some sympathy with that.“But it’s a journey and, whether they like it or not, they have to be a bit patient. It’s not a lightswitch, it takes a bit of time.”United confirmed the appointment of Jason Wilcox as technical director this week from Southampton.Wilcox, whose previous roles include technical director at Southampton and academy director at Manchester City, will report to the sporting director. The new sporting director has not yet been appointed but is expected to be Newcastle’s Dan Ashworth. The London MarathonSome of the other celebrities that were spotted crossing the finish line along with Ratcliffe:

    Comedian Romesh Ranganathan
Sky Sports F1 presenter Natalie Pinkham
    Actress Ruth Wilson
    Actor Christopher Eccleston
    Actor Phil Dunster
    Actor Jamie Borthwick
    Actress Emma Barton

Wilcox’s arrival comes after Man Utd revealed ex-Man City man Omar Berrada as their new chief executive.Another thing Ratcliffe and INEOS want to do is transform Old Trafford – or build a completely new stadium and make it a “Wembley of the North”.When asked about that by Logan, He replied: “I’d love to do that. I think that would be fantastic for the north of England.“I think that whole area of southern Manchester, it’s where the industrial revolution began, and that’s why they built Old Trafford there.“The workers would finish their shift, walk to the ground – so it was where industry and manufacturing began.“It’s a really important area but it’s run down, so to regenerate that area and build a Wembley of the North would be a marvellous project and we could achieve it.”READ MORE SUN STORIESSuddenly, he intervened again to cut-short the conversation by signing off with: “Anyway, I need to get to the match.”Although he did have time before he dashed off to reveal that it would definitely not be the tube that he would be using to get to the national stadium.Sir Jim reiterated his desire to build a ‘Wembley of the North’ new stadium More
