Stockport 0 West Ham 1: Craig Dawson’s header nicks late win for Hammers to set up home tie with Doncaster in FA Cup

CRAIG DAWSON provided the late spark just when the night threatened to turn into a damp squib for West Ham.
The game against non-league Stockport bizarrely had to be halted in the first half as local residents set off fireworks behind one of the goals.

But in almost impossible conditions, the spirited resistence by Jim Gannon’s men finally fizzled out seven minutes from time.
Dawson – who began his career with nearby minnows Radcliffe Borough –  got on the end of a cross from sub Jarrod Bowen to put the Hammers in round four.
Since the Premier League was founded, a top-flight club has lost to a non-league team on only two occasions.
However, this one appeared to have all the ingredients for an upset with Gannon’s Hatters flying high in the National League.

It was a filthy night in Greater Manchester – and the pitch was soaking after a day of rain. It was hard to imagine the Hammers fancying this FA Cup tie one bit.
Yet David Moyes’ men settled well with Declan Rice controlling the early stages and a cross from him landed nicely for Said Benrahma.
He worked an opening for himself but then bent his shot against the base of the post with keeper Ben Hinchcliffe beaten.
The Hatters reaching the 15 minute mark on level terms was the cue for a spectacular firework display behind Darren Randolph’s goal.

It had been organised by local residents to draw attention to the road accident which left a 15-year-old boy critically injured over Christmas.
Amid the racket, referee Mike Dean decided to stop play until the display was over.
In truth it was more spectacular than what was happening on the pitch with the Hatters keeping their opponents at arms length.
Maybe Randolph had been affected by what was going on behind him as he mis-judged a corner but was revealed to see his defenders bail him out.
It was a quarter of a century ago that Stockport dumped West Ham out of the League Cup – it was just starting to look like another upset could be on the cards.
The teams knew before kick-off that the winners would face Doncaster in round four – with a tie against Manchester United or Liverpool waiting after that.
No doubt County would have been allowing themselves to dream of the short trip to Old Trafford – the Hammers maybe not so much.
West Ham took 32 minutes to register their first shot on target as Manuel Lanzini shot from distance and Hinchcliffe got down well to save.

But they were starting to create chances with Matt Kitching getting across to deny Michail Antonio with a superbly timed tackle.
The Hammers forward then saw a shot delfected wide with Angelo Ogbonna heading off target from the resulting corner.
But Stockport looked a well-organised unit and the visitors were struggling to carve out many clear cut openings.
If anything the rain got heavier during the interval and the ball was starting to stick on the wet turf. Yet it was proving to be a real leveller.
Rice appealed for a penalty after he surged into the box and the ball appeared to strike an arm but referee Dean was not convinced.
And having hung in, Stockport began to show more ambition with James Jennings linking up nicely with Sam Minihan before hitting a goalbound effort that was blocked by Craig Dawson.
At the other end, Hinchliffe fluffed his clearance straight to the feet of Benrahma but was relieved the Algerian could not loop his long range effort on target.
Wayne Rooney’s brother John then shanked his clearance straight up in the air and Hinchliffe failed to deal with it.
But just as the Hatters looked set to hang on for extra time, sub Jarrod Bowen hung up a cross from the right and Dawson got there first to head home.

Stockport vs West Ham FA Cup tie temporarily delayed over fireworks being let off outside the ground

WEST HAM’S FA Cup third round clash at Stockport had to be temporarily halted due to a huge firework display outside the ground.
While there weren’t many fireworks on the pitch during the first half, there certainly were outside Edgeley Park as referee Mike Dean was forced to bring a halt to proceedings.

Such was the noise around the National League side’s ground, Dean was unable to hear what his officials were saying over their communication system.
The incident occurred in the 15th minute of the match, resulting in play being delayed for three minutes.
Speaking of the display, West Ham tweeted: “There appears to be fireworks.
“More to follow when we have it.”

Fans were quick to point out that it was the most exciting moment of the first half as the Hammers struggled to break down the fifth-tier outfit.
One supporter posted: “Only fireworks that we saw in the first half. Improvement needed.”
Another said: “Most entertaining thing that’s happened so far.”
A third quipped: “Mike Dean only stopped the game as he thought they were for him.”

The impressive display was a tribute for a local 15-year-old boy that was involved in a car accident last month.
The teenager was reportedly hit by a police car that was responding to a 999 call in Stockport, with officers immediately administering first aid until an ambulance arrived.
Craig Dawson’s late header won the tie for West Ham.
The Hammers will host Doncaster in the next round, with the winner of that match to face either Manchester United or Liverpool away in the fifth round.

MANCHESTER UNITED have been drawn against Liverpool in what is the standout tie of the FA Cup fourth round.
The two fierce rivals will meet at Old Trafford on the weekend of January 22-25, just a week after their top-of-the-table Premier League clash at Anfield.

Tottenham are on the road once again with Jose Mourinho’s men to pit their wits against Wycombe Wanderers.

Everton – who haven’t won a trophy since their 1995 FA Cup triumph – will take on Sheffield Wednesday.
Chorley’s reward for knocking out Derby is a home tie against Wolves in a repeat of their 1986 giant-killing, while Scott Parker’s struggling Fulham take on Burnley in an all-Premier League affair.
Crawley – who knocked out Leeds after easing to a 3-0 victory – have been handed a trip to boss John Yems’ former club Bournemouth.
Swansea host Nottingham Forest, with Barnsley to face Norwich in another all Championship match.

Ex-West Ham star Iain Dowie remembers Stockport Cup hell after scoring own goal, breaking leg and fans spitting in face

IAIN DOWIE is not the only man to look back on a wet and windy night out in Stockport with regret.
The former West Ham striker admits the infamous own goal he scored there in 1996 makes him wince and laugh in equal measure.

Try YouTube and add to the 341,000 previous views.
What is not common knowledge is that the boyhood Hammers fan played on with a broken leg and was then spat at when he was put out of his misery and substituted.
The bullet header past his own startled keeper Ludek Miklosko in that League Cup fourth round tie against a team from the third tier is part of West Ham folklore and Dowie freely admits it.
From 1-0 up they lost 2-1 and the curse of lower league opposition struck again.

Modern day West Ham under manager David Moyes return to the scene in tonight’s FA Cup third round with a tougher recent reputation but fighting against a tradition of crumbling against the minnows.
Dowie said: “The only place in the world I get a standing ovation is Stockport County.
“I live up that way now and some of the fans have banter with me.
“Apparently there’s a spot by the corner flag which says ‘Iain Dowie was here’.

“Of course it still hurts but I have to laugh about it as well. People say it was a really good own goal.”

Centre-forward Dowie, in his second spell with West Ham, had not scored a Premiership goal since March.
He said: “The team we picked was strong with Julian Dicks, Ian Bishop, Slaven Bilic, Miklosko, Ilie Dumitrescu.
“It was a bleak, horrible night and nearly 10,000 were in the ground. A massive chunk of those were West Ham. We started quite well, Dicksy scored a great goal. I was involved in the build up.
“It was blowing a gale and I think it was their full back who chucked in a long throw, it got clipped back into the box and I went to head it.
“I think it moved a bit in the wind, I wanted to head it out for a corner but it came off the side of my head and fired right into the top corner.
“I’ve always said Ludo should have come for the cross but it’s nothing more than just my horrendous error.
“I was having a difficult time with goals at the time and that just sums it up. Nobody to blame but me. The ball may have moved a bit but I should have headed it higher. Nobody said anything to me because there was nothing to say.
“I remember walking back to the halfway line hoping the ground would open and swallow me up.

Dowie spoke exclusively to Sun Sport about that miserable nightCredit: Pacemaker Press
“West Ham is the team I supported as a boy and I felt pressure. My own goal swung the momentum. Brett Angell made it 2-1, then I got put through on goal.
“The keeper came out, I knocked it past him, should’ve scored but didn’t and got clipped as I went past. As I landed I felt something funny in my leg.
“After a while I could hardly move and it turned out I had a spiral fracture on my right leg. Not only am I in horrendous form, have scored an own goal but have now broken my leg.
“As I walked up the tunnel I had to face the West Ham fans. They weren’t singing my name but the vast majority were very good.
“I felt some flecks of spit on my face. What really stuck in my mind though is that most of them were very good to me even though I was having a stinker.”
Dowie was back playing after just six weeks but reckons most people only remember him for his howler.
He said: “The plaster cast fell off my leg after about four and a half weeks because I was on the stepper in the gym all the time working hard to get back.
“By the time I came back I nicked a goal at home against Wimbledon – the first in 15 or so games . But it was disallowed! The following season I moved on to QPR.
“Some won’t remember the goal I scored that got us promoted but that’s how it is. No hiding – it was an horrendous mistake. I laugh about it now. I take full responsibility for getting us knocked out of the cup.”

Dowie is still an ardent Hammers supporterCredit: Reuters
Still an ardent Hammer, Dowie expects a better outcome this evening.
He said: “David Moyes is a fantastic manager. I love what he is doing, long may it continue. He has made great signings and is developing players like Declan Rice into a jewel.
“West Ham need to go there and win. Hopefully they’ll stay away from another own goal.
“I was part of the squad in 1991 when Tony Gale got sent off in the Cup semi final. I watched Trevor Brooking score the goal that won it. Winning the FA Cup would make it a phenomenal season.
“David’s a good fit. All of a sudden there is synergy. They must keep hold of the diamond Declan Rice and the cup is number one priority without a doubt. It would be a massive factor in trying to keep Declan at the club.”
Iain Dowie has asked for a donation to be made to the Justin Edinburgh 3 Foundation.

Mark Wright broke down in tears over Spurs axe but hopes to score dream goal vs Arsenal to taunt GMB host Piers Morgan

MARK WRIGHT broke down in tears when he was released by Tottenham – but now hopes to score his dream goal against Arsenal to taunt Piers Morgan.
The Only Way Is Essex star Wright, 33, was in the Spurs academy, captained the youth team and played alongside Jamie Redknapp in the reserves.

Mark Wright opened up on his heartache of leaving Tottenham but revealed his dream of scoring against ArsenalCredit: Rex Features

But after a summer of drinking and eating, he came back out of shape and was let go – leaving him broken.
Now, 15 years later, he has joined League Two Crawley and made his professional debut in the FA Cup win over Leeds.
And Wright has the added motivation to succeed and stick it to Good Morning Britain presenter and avid Gooner Morgan.
He appeared on the ITV show on Monday to discuss his short cameo in the shock cup upset over Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

The star could not resist a dig at Morgan, who branded his penalty shootout Soccer Aid managerial win in 2019 as the ‘best night of my life’.
Wright said: “The buzz was nearly as much as the buzz you had when you beat us on penalties in Soccer Aid – it was an incredible moment.
“Obviously I only got a few minutes. It was sensational to come on and make my professional debut and my brother making his debut.
“It was a memory I’ll never forget and my family will never forget.

“Nick [Tsaroulla] who scored the first goal, he had an accident. His career was over a few years ago when he was told he’s lucky to be alive and then he goes and does that yesterday. A sensational day for the whole club.
“I was in the shower with him actually. I said, ‘How are you feeling?’ He said, ‘Mark, honestly I can’t describe it I thought my career was over, my life was over.'”
And now the ultimate dream for Wright would be to score against Morgan’s beloved Arsenal at Wembley.
Asked about putting the Soccer Aid demons to bed, the former I’m A Celebrity and Strictly contestant quipped: “If I score in a penalty shootout against Arsenal in the FA Cup final, there’s only one man I’ll be thinking about at that point.”
Speaking in his BBC documentary Mark Wright: The Last Chance, the left-back said: “The day I got released from Tottenham was one of the worst days of my life. I cried my eyes out, I realised I messed up.

“I didn’t want to face my family, I didn’t want to face my friends. I was embarrassed.
“I had it all, 18, going to clubs and I just thought, ‘It’s done. I’ve been spoiled, I played for Arsenal, West Ham and Tottenham all of my life and never had to suffer when it came to football.’
“Captain of the youth team, playing for the reserves with Jamie Redknapp, Stephen Dalmat, Helder Postiga. I had it all.
“I went away one summer for a month, I drank alcohol for the first time, ate what I wanted every day, put on a stone and a half and came back to training pre-season and the goalkeepers were beating me. Never pulled it back.”
Wright joined League One Southend but instead of working hard and fighting his way back up the pyramid, he slipped down into non-league – including a short spell with Crawley – before going into TV.

Mark Wright makes late cameo for Crawley v Leeds in FA Cup after reality TV star reveals he cried over Spurs axe as kid

The 33-year-old, who is married to actress Michelle Keegan, tried to make it as a footballer when he was young.
But the Essex-born star has found success from other avenues away from football, such as TV and radio.
But coming on for an FA Cup clash against Premier League Leeds even if just for a few minutes would’ve been a big deal for Wright.
He told the BBC: “The day I got released from Tottenham was one of the worst days of my life. I cried my eyes out, I realised I messed up.

“Went to League One club Southend and thought, ‘What is this?’ And that is the point where I looked back at “where it all went wrong.
“Instead of going, ‘Right, I’ve dropped the down to League One, I’ve got to get myself back up.’ I’m going to train harder, train longer. Do what I’m doing now at Crawley.
“Staying out after with the fitness coach. On my days, I’m going to work harder to get back.”
Wright is still haunted by how his actions cost him a place at Spurs and has urged youngsters at big club’s academies to never let their work ethic slip.
He added: “If I could tell any young player now, don’t do what I did. The hardest working players make it. And that’s what I didn’t do.”

The former Only Way is Essex Star signed for Crawley last month on a non-contract basis.
Upon joining the Reds, Wright said: “My love for the game has never gone away and the fact that I never played a professional game in the Football League has always niggled away at me. If I don’t do it now, I never will.
“When the manager, John Yems, who I played for 12 years ago here at Crawley asked me if I would like to take it further and sign for the club, of course I didn’t think twice and tonight I’m quite simply over the moon.
“I’ve worked so hard to get fighting fit and I will continue to do so. When/if the time comes for me to make my debut, it will be a day I remember and cherish forever.”
