Football Association release roadmap to women’s FA Cup final in celebration of competition’s 50th anniversary

THE Football Association have revealed the dates for the remaining women’s FA Cup ties until the final in celebration of the competition’s 50th anniversary. Following the tournament’s untimely pause due to Covid, it must now carry on into next season.
The FA have released the women’s FA Cup dates until the final which will be played next season
The FA have joined forces with mobile networking company EE to present the final which will be played on Sunday December 5, 2021 at Wembley.
The decision to choose this day is a poignant one as it marks the exact date a 100 years ago when the FA banned women’s football.
Kelly Simmons, Director of Women’s Professional Game said using the date was a “fitting” tribute to all the female trailblazers who have played the sport.
She said: “To mark the competition’s 50th anniversary, we felt it was fitting to schedule the 2021 Vitality Women’s FA Cup Final on 5 December, a date for many which represents the game’s lowest ebb.
“We want to use the Cup Final day, always one of the most special in the calendar, as a platform to celebrate the game’s historic trailblazers.
“Watching our best players at one of the best stadiums in the world, will hopefully continue to inspire a new generation to fall in love with women’s football.”
The competition restarted at the end of March and has reached the fifth round stage which fixtures will be played from May 16 to May 20.
The quarter-finals will take place on Wednesday 29 September , and the semi’s a month later on Sunday 31 October.

The FA seem to planning a celebration after the final game which could see fans in attendance.
Their press release said: “More details of the celebrations to be held and ticket details will be released in due course.”
This decision is in line with the men’s game who the FA have allowed to have fans at the Carabao Cup and FA Cup finals.
The Carabao Cup final between Tottenham and Man City last month had 8,000 fans in attendance.
And this amount will be extended to 21,000 for the FA Cup final between Chelsea and Leicester City.

Leicester City fan hopes her unique name Wembley Lester will inspire her team to FA Cup glory

A LEICESTER City fan hopes her unique name will inspire her team to FA Cup glory next week.Wembley Lester Harrup, 57, was born four days before her team’s FA Cup final match against Manchester United in 1963.

And after a few drinks, dad Jack Dewick named her Wembley Lester in honour of his team’s big game at the North West London stadium.
The Foxes went on to lose 3-1 but Wembley hopes her name brings City luck in next Saturday’s final against Chelsea.
The mum of two said: “I’m very proud of my name. It’s definitely an ice breaker when we meet people for the first time.
“I get some odd looks sometimes but mostly it’s positive.”
Gardener Wembley, from Humberstone, Leics, said she is a lifelong Leicester City fan.
She said: “I have lived in three houses literally all a stone’s throw away from each other in Leicester.
“My family are all mad Foxes fans and we used to all live close to each other and talk about nothing else.
“I’ve seen them play loads of times and have even been to the old Filbert Street back in the day.”
But there is one place she said she has not been.

She said: “It might sound daft considering I’m named after it but I have never been to Wembley.
“But I’ll be watching and cheering them on at home.
“Hopefully they can bring the trophy home.”

Arsenal legend Charlie George reflects on legendary goal that won Gunners the double 50 years ago

CHARLIE GEORGE pauses — and you know something good is coming.Something that captures the significance of the moment, 50 years ago this week, when he celebrated the goal that would win Arsenal the Double by lying on his back, arms aloft, on the Wembley turf.
Charlie George lifts the cup after scoring an extra-time winner against Liverpool
George now works in corporate hospitality at Arsenal
George chuckled: “People said, ‘Who do you think you are, Jesus Christ?’ .“And I said, ‘On that Saturday afternoon, I was more important’.”
John Lennon once caused outrage by saying The Beatles were “more popular than Jesus”. And George was a rock ’n’ roll footballer with his long hair, his swagger and his anti-establishment attitude.
In the weeks, months and years after the 1971 FA Cup Final, kids from North London to Newcastle copied the celebration.
For young fans, it was the football equivalent of David Bowie’s seminal appearance on Top Of The Pops a year later — and George became a 1970s icon.
The man himself enjoys the pop-idol description. Now 70, George said: “Why not? I think it’s great. As a youngster, I loved all the Tamla Motown but the Rolling Stones were my favourites.
“And I scored the winning goal with my long hair. I didn’t know I was going to do it — it wasn’t planned. I just thought it was a great thing at the time.
What are you going to do? You’ve got to celebrate. Be different! I like to think I was different.”
George, the 20-year-old Islington boy turned superstar, was certainly different. But the celebration itself was actually the same one he had done earlier in the season.
Charlie George and Eddie Kelly celebrate after the 1971 FA Cup final win
As he explains elsewhere, in the fourth-round FA Cup tie at Manchester City, he lay in the Maine Road mud with his arms out to celebrate the second of his two goals in a 2-1 victory.
But millions more were watching when George beat Liverpool keeper Ray Clemence with a thunderous 20-yard shot deep into extra time to earn Arsenal a 2-1 win and the League and Cup Double.
It was 0-0 after 90 minutes then Steve Heighway put Liverpool ahead. Gunners sub Eddie Kelly levelled before George’s rocket.
He said: “People thought the celebration was new. It wasn’t, I’d already done it
“I was the first to do it, I think. There’s been a few copied it after.” That includes grown men in the street, even years later.
George, who still has a role with the Gunners, said: “I used to go and watch all the away games. But since I’ve been working for Arsenal, I’ve not been to too many.
“We played up at Everton once and I was coming out of the stadium afterwards. A guy ran out and said [he puts on a Scouse accent], ‘Hey, Charlie George’.
“He started laying on the floor, which was  funny because he was an Everton fan and the Cup Final goal was against Liverpool.”
But it’s Arsenal fans who love, and still love, George the most. Because he was — and is — one of them.
He grew up barely a mile from Highbury with three older sisters. His brother-in-law Joe took him to his first game when he was only five.
George said: “I scored the winner not just for the club but for the fans, because I was one.  Just to play for the club was special for me.
To actually score the winning goal — every boy dreams of scoring a goal in the Cup Final — in front of a hundred thousand.
“You’ve got all your mates up on the terraces, all your family. At the final whistle, I had a few tears in my eyes.
“To win Arsenal’s first league and FA Cup for years, to do the Double when the last team to do it was that mob at White Hart Lane, was an unbelievable feeling. You can’t describe it.”
Well, you can — but it gets you into trouble. George once claimed the adulation from the Highbury faithful and that Double-winning moment were “better than sex”.
He said: “I remember saying that. My wife didn’t think it was too clever at the time.”
George with former Leeds United manager Don Revie
George married Susan Farge in December 1971. They had a daughter named Kaana, but later divorced.
His relationship with Arsenal has had its ups and downs, too.
He left to join Derby in 1975 after one too many rows with Bertie Mee, the Double-winning manager he describes as “an a***hole, a little man with a chip on his shoulder”.
But something changed that demonstrated his strength of feeling for the Gunners.
He said: “I was physically sick before most of my games for Arsenal.“It was probably from the pressure of being a local lad, playing for the local team. When I went to Derby, it never happened.”
After his Rams spell, George went to the USA, Southampton, Hong Kong, Bournemouth and back to Derby.
He retired in 1984 but admits that May 8 1971, the day he scored that goal when was still only 20, was the highpoint of his career.
He lives close to the Emirates — “six minutes in a car” — and during the pandemic, club staff have missed his regular visits to the offices or just listening to him guide starstruck fans around the stadium on a Legends tour.

What makes a legend? George’s Arsenal career lasted just 179 games and featured 49 goals.
But what he gave in those games, what he won with one of those goals and what he did to celebrate it are a permanent part of Arsenal and football folklore.
Before every match at the Emirates, George is there on the big screens, lying on his back at Wembley as part of the video montage.
And every single day, he is there for all to see on the giant mural of Arsenal greats that runs around the ground.
George said: “To be put in the bracket of some of the great, great players we’ve had is nice.
“To be put on the wall around the stadium is special. It’s fantastic.
“And that’s going to be there for a long while, hopefully . . . unless someone takes it down!”
The legend of Charlie George will live on for another 50 years and well beyond.

Williamson wows Arsenal fans with her silky skills ahead of club’s clash with Seagulls

LEAH WILLIAMSON is winning plaudits on Twitter for a sublime piece of skill during Arsenal’s trouncing of Gillingham in the Women’s FA Cup. The England ace, who is better known for her robust defensive displays, stunned fans when she pulled off the silky move.

And Gunners supporters proudly shared a clip of Williamson in action, with the caption “How’s your touch,” directed towards her.
In the clip, which amassed over 2,000 likes, the centre-back can be seen using her back heel to flick the ball to her front foot, before majestically controlling it and passing it on.
And club team-mate Anna Patten can also be seen in the footage watching Williamson, 24, in amazement.
In the comments under the clip, Williamson jokingly asks Patten if she is “okay,” to which Patten replied, “I’m so in awe of your touch I can’t move!”.
Patten, who returned to North London in January, also showed off her attacking prowess by scoring her first-ever goal for the Gunners in their 10-0 win against Gillingham.
The Hertfordshire-born defender, who sealed a move from US university side the South Carolina Gamecocks, has made five appearances for Arsenal this term.
And Patten and her team-mates have even more to celebrate with the Gunners having gone 540 minutes without conceding a goal ahead of their WSL game against Brighton.
But not to be out-done by the team’s defenders, Dutch hot-shot Vivianne Miedema also hit a pinnacle in the game, making her 100th appearance for the club.
Williamson and her team-mate Patten joked about the clip on Twitter
The Gunners have not conceded a goal in 540 minutes of competitive football

Gunners boss Jo Montemurro will be hoping his players can keep up their solid defensive displays as they pursue Champions League qualification.
Arsenal, who are currently third, are level on points with their top three rivals Manchester United.
However, they have a game in hand over the Red Devils who face Tottenham ahead of their final two matches of the season against Bristol and Everton.
Wins for Arsenal in their four remaining WSL games should see them finish third and qualify for the Champions League.

Leicester 1 Southampton 0: Iheanacho fires Foxes into first FA Cup final for 52 years as he sinks subdued Saints

KELECHI IHEANACHO booked Leicester City’s place against Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley on May 15.Kel surprise!

If anyone was going to break this ‘stalest’ of stalemates it was Brendan Rodgers’ in-form Fox-in-the-box who rifled home his 14th goal in 19 FA Cup appearances to set up a battle of the Blues in next month’s final.
No player has scored more goals in this competition or been more up for the FA Cup than the 24-year-old Nigerian over the past five-and-a-half seasons.
Thankfully, Iheanacho gave this low-key semi-final the nudge it needed just as the 4,000 invited fans inside Wembley were in danger of dozing off.
Once again Iheanacho had Leicester legend Jamie Vardy to thank for setting up his 55th minute winner.
The fleet-footed 34-year-old showed Jan Bednarek a clean pair of heels before laying a low cross into his partner’s path.
Iheanacho’s initial attempt was heading wide but bounced off Jannik Vestergaard and at the second time of asking the £25million hitman made no mistake as he rifled the rebound beyond Fraser Forster.

It was enough to end the Foxes’ 52-year-wait since their last FA Cup final appearance in 1969.
And it raised hopes that Rodgers’ class of 2021 could lift the famous trophy for the first time in their 137 year history – at the fifth attempt!
However both clubs better pray there were no agents from the proposed breakaway European Super League scouting for potential candidates to join them in the future.
Because neither side managed to bring their A-game to Wembley, although few would argue Leicester were not well worth their win.

However Leicester more than matched that when James Maddison came off the bench and immediately came close with a couple of similar attempts.
Even when Saints sent Fraser Forster up to join the attack in stoppage time, the usually reliable James Ward-Prowse delivered the ball straight into the waiting arms of Kasper Schmeichel.
That summed up Saints’ miserable day as their nerves appeared shredded by the size of the prize on offer and they failed to manage a single shot on target.

FOOTBALL finally welcomed back fans as 4,000 Leicester and Southampton followers streamed to Wembley for Sunday’s FA Cup semi-finalThe lucky ‘few’ strolled in the sunshine to the home of football without the usual packed pavements for such a big match.
Leicester and Southampton fans descend on Wembley for the one-off pilot event but only 4,000 were allowed and all must live in the London borough of Brent
It’s not quite the usual packed path to Wembley but football finally saw the return of spectators for Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final
Stewards were out in force at Wembley preparing for the momentous return of fans
Stewards appeared to stick to social distancing as they waited to deal with fans
But they looked ultra-relaxed and just happy to be there after the government let the FA select the clash as a one-off pilot event.
That’s before the May 17 nationwide date when crowds of up to 10,000 can officially return.
But only residents of the surrounding area Brent were allowed in on Sunday for this second semi-final.
Masked stewards were busy preparing Wembley for spectators hours before the 6.30pm kick-off.
High-flying Leicester and their lowly Premier League rivals are bidding to reach the final against Chelsea on May 15.
It followed Saturday’s last-four tie behind closed doors, where the Blues overcame Manchester City 1-0.

Wembley chiefs hope 20,000 fans will be allowed in for the final.
And the FA will seek approval from Uefa for 45,000 or even more for the four knockout games it will be hosting in the Euros.
