MANCHESTER UNITED beat West Ham 1-0 in the 5th round of the FA Cup thanks to an extra-time goal from Scott McTominay.
RESULT: Man Utd 1-0 West Ham
Man Utd XI: Henderson, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Telles, Matic, Van De Beek, Fred, Greenwood, Martial, Rashford
West Ham XI: Fabianski, Coufal, Dawson, Ogbonna, Cresswell, Rice, Noble, Soucek, Fornals, Bowen, Yarmolenko

    GOODBYE!
Sorry it wasn’t the net-bulging, eyebrow-raising goal-fest we were all hoping for, but the two sides did their best for us.
In the end it was Scott McTominay’s extra-time volley which secured United a place in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
But a bit of a hapless night for the Hammers, who will be kicking themselves for failing to nab a striker in the January transfer window.
Oh well, they’ve always got the summer.
Have a good evening and we’ll catch you back here tomorrow evening for our coverage of Everton vs Tottenham!
    Night.

    OLE SPEAKS
It wasn’t the prettiest of victories tonight but Ole knows of the importance of bouncing back from Saturday’s draw with Everton.

“I felt we dominated. I thought we were in complete control of the first half.
“In the second half it became more of a game. When it’s only one nil and we are wasteful, anything can happen to us – we knew that from the last game [Everton]. It’s just about finishing the game off but we’re through. We’re in the hat and that’s what we wanted.
“I think we got about 15 to 17 shots in the end but we need to be more clinical. We should’ve finished the game off earlier and finished in 90 minutes but sometimes it doesn’t happen.
“We needed to have a good result and a good feeling after today because we were low after Everton game. It’s hard to take but they were really focused and did the job.
“Of course you want to win every game. We want to challenge and we want to go to the final. That’s what we’re here at Man United for. Sometimes you’re lucky with draw in the cup – we haven’t been that lucky – but obviously we move another step closer to the final.”

At the match-winning moment from Scott McTominay.
He’s emerged as an important cog in the Man Utd wheel and you suspect he’ll be a big part of Scotland’s Euros campaign in the summer too!

    LOOKING AHEAD
Manchester United reach the last-8 for the seventh consecutive season.
But who could they play in the quarter-finals? It’ll be one of the teams below.
    Ties still to be played
    Bournemouth
    Sheffield United OR Bristol City
    Wolves OR Southampton
    Barnsley OR Chelsea
    Everton OR Tottenham
    Swansea OR Manchester City
    Leicester OR Brighton

    THE NUMBERS BEHIND THE SUCCESS
The full-time stats from Manchester United’s 1-0 win over West Ham.
Two hours of football and two shots at goal for the in-form Hammers.
Without Antonio, were they daft to let Haller go too?
Paul Tierney not using his cards tonight either!

    MAGUIRE REACTS
Harry Maguire was given Man of the Match tonight and he praised the side’s spirit to win tonight after a sucker-punch on Saturday night against Everton.

I thought the performance was good, I feel we could’ve been a bit more clinical. We should have been ahead at the break and they had a spell after it but we defended better than we did against Everton at the weekend. We dug in and I felt we got the win we deserved. We were so disappointed on Saturday so it shows great spirit and mentality to get our heads back up for tonight.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WEST HAM
It wasn’t pretty. In fact it was far from it.
But it was a quality goal that separated the teams and it was a classy finish from Scott McTominay to settle the tie.
West Ham will be disappointed they didn’t create anything and in truth didn’t give it a go.

Defender Eric Dier is likely to return after being benched for Sunday’s 2-0 Prem victory over West Brom, Mourinho said: “I believe players have moments.
“They can be very good, they can be strong personalities, they can be experienced, they can cope with a mistake.

Dele spoke with his boss when a move to Paris Saint-Germain and a reunion with ex-Spurs chief Mauricio Pochettino did not materialise — and may feature tonight.
Mourinho added: “What’s changed? He is available and not injured. He is happy to be training and we’re happy to have him back.”

Man Utd ratings: Sub McTominay shines after Van de Beek struggles again as Solskjaer’s men KO West Ham in FA Cup

DONNY VAN DE BEEK’S latest dim display looked all the gloomier when contrasted with that of match-winning sub Scott McTominay as Manchester United scraped into the FA Cup quarter-finals.
Here’s how we rated Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s jaded-looking team in a forgettable 1-0 win after extra time against dogged, defensive West Ham.

Man Utd left-back Alex Telles marauded forward well, especially in the first halfCredit: Getty Images – Getty
    Dean Henderson – 6/10

    Totally untroubled almost throughout.
But the Euro 2021 hopeful kept his concentration to easily catch a header that menacing West Ham sub Said Behnrahma directed straight at him when the visitors hunted in vain for an extra-time leveller.
But this shot-shy night was not the time to judge Henderson’s claims to replace David De Gea as United’s first-choice keeper.
    Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 7
Comfortable evening for the uncapped right-back.

Athletically hooked the ball away from almost the line when Southampton threatened from a 90th-minute corner.
Was replaced by Brandon Williams in the 90th minute, but that was all about keeping him fresh over anything to do with his performance.
    Victor Lindelof – 7
One fine, firm downward header forced Lukasz Fabianski into a brilliant full-stretch tip-around from virtually the only clear chance of the opening period.
Also made a couple of useful blocks later on when the Hammers sporadically came close to creating a few half-chances.

    Harry Maguire – 7
Rarely tested but still strong at the back – the figurehead as and when needed.
Bustled forward when he could, but it was unfair to expect the skipper to make up for his team-mates’ timidity further forward.
    Alex Telles – 7
Lively display from left-back, especially in the first half, when he was always pressing to overlap.
The Brazilian and Luke Shaw are pushing themselves all the way for this position.
And he was understandably replaced by Shaw, in the 90th minute, as Solskjaer protected his tiring legs.
    Fred – 5
Steady enough, but United needed more than that from their midfield.
And they only got it once McTominay and Fernandes came on.
    Nemanja Matic – 5
Did little wrong but equally little to persuade Solskjaer he should be starting more regularly in the Prem, rather than just in the FA Cup.
Was replaced by Scott McTominay in the 73rd minute when Solskjaer was clearly keen to up the tempo.
Donny van de Beek – 5
Looked lost at times, seemingly nervous and uncertain of his role – but that might be as much a criticism of United’s tactics as of the Dutchman himself.
Was keen to find gaps, running on and off the ball in front of a crowded West Ham defence.
But in reality his involvement was peripheral and usually docile, way off the impact he needs to break into the team regularly.
Damningly, he was never the pivot for United’s attacks, never the man his team-mates looked to.
Appeared resigned to his fate when United signalled substitutions on 73 minutes, and indeed was promptly taken off, replaced by Bruno Fernandes.
    Mason Greenwood – 6
Briefly lit up a gloomy first half with a nifty, touch, turn and nutmeg of Mark Noble.
But that was in a harmless area of the pitch – just like much of his play. Was replaced by fellow frontman Edinson Cavani on 86 minutes.
    Marcus Rashford – 7
Flitted dangerously at times but mostly too far from the danger area.
Lacked the decisiveness of a true striker when a loose ball dropped to him early in the second period, enabling Fabianski to block a sidefoot shot.
But he looked as if he could make a decisive intervention if fed inside the box – and pretty much proved that with his lovely flick for McTominay’s winner.
    Anthony Martial – 6
Another of United’s attackers who spent too long on the fringes.
He too was more a victim than a culprit of the home side’s plodding performance and lack of creativity.
Steered a late extra-time effort too close to Fabianski.

    SUBS:
Edinson Cavani (for Greenwood, 86 mins) – 6
A few classy touches and also looked a more natural focal point for the frontline, reflecting both his experience and the fact Martial and Rashford are not out-and-out centre-forwards
Bruno Fernandes (for Van de Beek, 73 mins) – 6
A clear and instant improvement on what went before, flickering menacingly on the fringes of United’s attack
Scott McTominay (for Matic, 73 mins) – 8
    Immediately injected energy and drive.
And his timing was as perfect as his confidence when he clinically slotted the only goal eight minutes into extra time, following Rashford’s neat touch.
That’s the Scot’s seventh goal in a season where his all-round game and stature have matured impressively.
Luke Shaw (for Telles, 90 mins) – 6
Fitted in as seamlessly as you would expect at left-back from one of the Prem’s most in-form defenders
    Brandon Williams (for Wan-Bissaka, 90 mins) – 6
A rare bit of game-time for the youngster this season. Little direct impact, but not much need for it.
Subs not used: Grant, Diallo, James, Tuanzebe.

Man Utd 1 West Ham 0 (AET): Supersub Scott McTominay fires Solskjaer and Co into FA Cup quarter-final with sweet strike

SCOTT MCTOMINAY proved a cut above the rest as he fired Manchester United into the last eight of the FA Cup.
Sporting a do it yourself lockdown haircut the 24-year-old Scottish international pounced with a drilled first-time effort in the seventh minute of extra time.

McTominay stroked home a superb, extra-time effort to send United to the FA Cup quarter-finalCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd

He spoke recently about his desperation to experience being part of a Manchester United team that wins silverware.
Thanks to him they are now a step closer.
He was captain and match winner with the only goal in the third round against Watford and part of the midfield engine room that wore down Liverpool in round four.
He had actually been rested for last night but came on as a 73rd minute sub as to add some much needed energy to a tiring team.

⚽ Read our Man United live blog for the latest news from Old Trafford
Then in the 97th minute he struck.
West Ham twice failed to clear their lines with headers allowing Marcus Rashford to touch off a loose ball to McTominay to fire home from ten yards.
It was his third in as many games and scoring one from distance in the 9-0 win over Southampton and a header that should have sealed victory against Everton.

For both Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford this was their 250th appearance in a Manchester United shirt.

Fabianski made a sublime save to deny Lindelof in the first-halfCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd

For Rashford, at 23 years and 101 days, he became the fourth-youngest player in the club’s history to reach that mark behind Norman Whiteside, George Best and Ryan Giggs.
Early on they both look like they wanted to mark the occasion in style as well for they were on their game right from the first whistle charging at the visitors.
Martial would have the first decent effort of the game which would also lead to an unfortunate injury blow for West Ham.
Of the six changes manager Solskjaer made to his team one was at left back with Alex Telles coming for Luke Shaw who has been enjoying the best period of his United career.
But there is no drop in standards when summer signing Telles comes in who like Shaw is equally adept defending and getting forward.
Indeed his delivery is among the best in the squad.
It was he who picked out Martial with a superbly weighted through ball on 11 minutes but as he shot Angelo Ogbonna slid across to block his effort.
Martial’s momentum carried him forward with his outstretched boot crunching in to Ogbonna’s ankle.
After lengthy treatment he simply could not go on and limped gingerly off the pitch and down the tunnel to be replaced by Issa Diop.
Diop himself would need attention later in the half after a nasty cash of heads with Martial.
It would lead to him going off at half time as a concussion sub.
Having had an early chance, French forward Martial would turn provider in the 16th minute.

Van de Beek had another tough evening before being replaced by FernandesCredit: Getty Images – Getty
It was Telles pass into the box that found him and he expertly cushioned the ball with his chest and laid it off to Greenwood but his effort was blocked by the sliding Aaron Cresswell.
Solskjaer has praised Greenwood lately for his performances describing him as the stand out player in the 3-3 draw with Everton.
There was one moment last night when he mesmerised Mark Noble with a clever turn along the touchline to leave him trailing.
But it is goals that Greenwood needs and so far this season he has only four and just one in the league.
It took a superb save from Lukasz Fabianski to stop the home side from taking the lead on 27 minutes.
Telles is the best corner kicker at the club as well and when he swung one in Victor Lindelof stooped to head goalwards.
The ball deflected off Craig Dawson and was heading for the bottom corner, but Fabianski dived full length and stretched every sinew to claw it away.
At the opposite end of course Dean Henderson was hoping to stake his claim for a decent run between the sticks with David De Gea’s form once more coming into question following the Everton game.
The problem was Henderson was having little to do in order to raise the volume of the clamour for him to get his chance.
West Ham had one shot to United’s eight by the break which pretty much summed up how much Solsjaer’s men were on top.
Having run themselves into the ground with that impressive 3-1 win at Aston Villa, the Hammers had looked fatigued in their goalless draw at Fulham.
Main man Michail Antonio simply needed the rest he was afforded last night.

Yarmolenko was also forced off the pitch due to injury at Old TraffordCredit: PA:Press Association

Fabianski was forced into making another sharp save in the second-half, this time from RashfordCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
Still, Moyes clearly expected more from his men as he raced down the touchline at the break for his half-time talk.
While Diop’s change was enforced he also brought Ben Johnson on for Jarrod Bowen.
But a third injury on the night forced Moyes into another change early in the half.
Andiy Yarmolenko took a knock and 18-year-old Mipo Odubeko who came through the ranks at Manchester United finally got the chance to play at Old Trafford.
The wave of red attacks would continue early in the second half before West Ham got a foot in the game but it became very scrappy..
Fabianski had to come to the rescue again with as he made himself big to deny Rashford at close range.
Then there was alarm bells ringing when Lindelof gave the ball away right on half way and Pablo Fornals broke and tried to find Declan Rice to his left..
Credit to Lindelof for his recovery for he would get back to intercept that pass.
United were missing that X-factor that Bruno Fernandes gives them and with extra-time looming he was brought into the fray for the ineffective Donny van de Beek.
Scott McTominay would also come on for Nemanja Matic.
Nobody wanted extra time in these Baltic temperatures so Solskjaer stuck Edinson Cavani on as well for the last five minutes of normal time in the hope his poaching instincts could do it.
But another 30 minutes for tiring teams it was.
And McTominay ensured it was United who booked their place in the last-eight with his sweetly-struck extra-time finish.

Burnley forced into last-gasp change after ‘FORGETTING’ Eric Pieters was suspended for Bournemouth defeat in FA Cup

RED-FACED Burnley axed Erik Pieters at the last minute from their FA Cup defeat to Bournemouth – after remembering he was SUSPENDED.
The Clarets faced being been thrown out of the tournament for fielding an ineligible player had Dutch left-back Pieters taken part.

But instead academy product Anthony Glennon came into the side for the last-16 home clash.
Burnley announced on social media the change was “due to an administrative error” – but fans pounced on the blunder.
One said: “That is embarrassing” – while many others were baffled, with their responses including “Wow!”
But posts like this spelled it out: “The club are fully aware of the rules! But yes if he played they would be charged with fielding an ineligible player – normally kicked out if found guilty.”

The Clarets were aiming to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2002-03 – but fell to the Championship side 2-0.
Supporters on social media were proved right when they noted that Pieters’ enforced absence left them fragile at the back.
One posted “So we don’t have a first-team left-back” another replied: “We have two, one injured and one suspended.”

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho backs Carlo Ancelotti to bring silverware to Everton… if he is given time

JOSE MOURINHO is backing Carlo Ancelotti to bring silverware back to Everton – if he is given the time.
Mourinho takes his Tottenham to Ancelotti’s Toffees in the FA Cup fifth round on Wednesday night.

Ahead of their FA Cup clash, Spurs chief Jose Mourinho rates Everton counterpart Carlo Ancelotti as ‘one of the best managers in the world’Credit: AFP or licensors

The hosts have not lifted a trophy since winning the famous old competition 25 years ago.
But Everton have improved considerably under three-times Champions League winner Ancelotti.
And his old pal Mourinho said: “Carlo is Carlo.
“He doesn’t go to a club to spend some time or to have some fun.

“He goes to a club to try to be Carlo.
“A winner, he is one of the best managers in the world and just by arriving he brings to the club that ambition.
“You can see the players they have got, they will go in the direction of some players they will progress.
“They will go in the direction of having some players Carlo knows very well, and players with great quality and great experience at the highest level.

“They have other players who are improving a lot and Carlo, with time, he will win.
“I am not saying Everton can jump over the top clubs with incredible histories. It is not an easy process of course.
“But with Carlo and with patience and with time and with continuous development of the team, there is nobody better than Carlo to give a trophy to Everton.”
Tottenham are looking for their first piece of silverware since lifting the League Cup in 2008.
Having already booked their place in this year’s final of that competition they will be looking to edge a step closer to what they hope will be a domestic cup double with victory at Goodison Park.
Mourinho will again be without the crocked Giovani Lo Celso and Serge Reguilon while Serge Aurier is a fresh doubt having picked up a knock in Sunday’s 2-0 win over West Brom.
The Spurs boss must decide whether to play Harry Kane after the striker returned from ankle injuries earlier than expected to score against the Baggies.
But Dele Alli could feature after recovering from a calf injury and having clear-the-air talks with Mourinho over his future.

Mourinho says Dele Alli is back training and ‘not injured’ but in a ‘normal situation’ without players missing might not be considered vs EvertonCredit: Getty Images – Getty
Mourinho said today: “Dele Alli, he trained yesterday with the team and well. He’s had a long time away, a couple of weeks not training with the team and recovering – can he play tomorrow?
“Well he’s not injured but I’m not sure he can start.
“But can he help us? I believe he can so in terms of having Dele on the bench to come for a few minutes to try to help the team is that possible, something I have to speak to him but I believe he can.”
Mourinho held talks with Dele after his desired move to link up again with former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino at Paris Saint-Germain failed to materialise last month.
Mourinho insisted: “Nothing’s changed. He is not injured, he can train with the team.
“He went through a process of not training, training with the sports science people and then jumped to the team work which he did yesterday for the first time. So nothing’s changed.
“What maybe changed is speculation around him because in this moment everybody knows he is a Tottenham player, who stays in here and he doesn’t go to any place.

“I want him fully on board and it depends on his feelings but if he can come on for 10, 15 minutes and help that will be good.
    Jose Mourinho on Dele Alli

“So probably the end of the speculation will be the end of questions and with the end of questions he can train, he can try to help the team because this is what we want, this is what we need.
“We need players to help the team and hopefully he can do that.
“In a normal situation he wouldn’t even be considered for tomorrow but with the injuries we have, the number of matches we have maybe we have to accelerate his process and maybe we can.
“But of course I want him to be fully on board and to agree and it depends on his feelings but if he can be on the bench tomorrow and to come for 10, 15 minutes and help the team that will be good for us.”
