Crawley 3 Leeds 0: Mark Wright makes pro debut as Town thump Premier League side to reach FA Cup fourth round

NO fans – but the magic is still there.
Crawley delivered the upset of the third round with a brilliant destruction of Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds.

And most embarrassingly of all for Leeds, it could have been more.
It was a great day in the League Two club’s history and the obvious shame was that there were no fans inside the ground although there was an injury-time professional debut off the bench for 33-year-old reality TV star Mark Wright.
Nick Tsaroulla scored a brilliant opener, Ashley Nadesan made it 2-0 three minutes later and Jordan Tunnicliffe scored to seal the tie – and there was still 20 minutes left.
It was a proud moment for John Yems who, with his attacking tactics, beat Bielsa at his own game.

Bielsa made seven changes from the previous game but it was still a strong team yet they were an embarrassment.
Rodrigo attempted to claim a penalty but falling theatrically – and while there may have been some contact – clipped the boot of Tony Craig.
Leeds keeper Kiko Casilla had little to do but kept his side level with a save before half-time.
Tom Nichols had a surprisingly easy header from Jack Powell’s corner but the effort was straight at Casilla.

Bielsa made three changes at the break with Jack Harrison, Jack Jenkins and Oliver Casey all being introduced and it hardly did the trick.
Yet just six minutes into the second half and Tsaroulla, released by Spurs after missing a year with a car crash, produced a moment of brilliance.
Tsaroulla avoided a half-hearted challenge from Pablo Hernandez, turned Jamie Shackleton inside out and breezed past Casey before drilling the ball past Casilla.
Yet it got even worse for Casilla when he was beaten at his near post – the ball went through his legs – after Nadesan struck from an acute angle.
Equally, you would have expected Casey to have blocked the shot.
And the humiliation was complete when Jordan Tunnicliffe hammered the ball into the net after Casilla kept out the effort from Nadesan.
Sub Max Watters looked set to grab a fourth after rounding Casilla but took too much time to get a shot in.
But it could not take the shine off an incredible win.

Chelsea 4 Morecambe 0: Werner and Mount on target as Blues cruise into FA Cup fourth round

TIMO WERNER brought his two month goal drought to an end to seal Chelsea’s place in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
The £47.5 million striker has been defended by boss Frank Lampard despite not hitting the target since November 7.

But he was finally in the right place at the right time to convert a header across goal from fellow German Kai Havertz a minute before half time to ease pressure on himself and his team.
Chelsea were already leading thanks to a classy Mason Mount opener on 18 minutes but were struggling to turn their domination against League Two opposition into goals.
⚽ Read our Chelsea live blog for the very latest news from the Bridge
And for a team which has been expensively assembled on a recent poor run there was a growing sense of frustration until Werner popped up at the far post.

Chelsea reached the final of last year’s FA Cup and boss Lampard takes the competition extremely seriously. He named a strong side which also included skilful Hakim Ziyech – the first of his six major signings last year.
And it was winger Ziyech’s deep cross from the right wing that sliced open Morecambe’s defence and allowed Havertz time and space to redirect the ball across the face of goal.
Werner was on hand to convert the cross in mid-air using the instep of his right boot. There was no way back for Morecambe after that.
The visitors did provide one momentary scare when the score was 0-0 when winger Adam Phillips caught £72m reserve Chelsea keeper Kepa off guard with a low cross that went behind the Spaniard.

Kepa was forced to scramble back onto his line and rescue the ball before it crossed.
The victory is the first of any kind for Chelsea since December 21 when they beat West Ham 3-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Homegrown winger Callum Hudson-Odoi was particularly dangerous on the left flank, teeing up Mount for the opener and causing constant problems.
Hudson-Odoi made it 3-0 four minutes into the second half when he timed a run perfectly to latch onto a through ball over the defence by Ziyech before planting a shot past Morecambe keeper Mark Halstead.
Havertz made it 4-0 five minutes from time when he converted a header this time to divert a cross from captain Cesar Azpilicueta into the net from six yards.

Mark Wright makes late cameo for Crawley vs Leeds in FA Cup after reality TV star reveals he cried over Spurs axe as kid

MARK WRIGHT made a late cameo for Crawley in Sunday’s FA Cup clash against Leeds.
The reality TV star climbed off the bench in injury time of his side’s 3-0 win over the stunned Premier League team.

The 33-year-old, who is married to actress Michelle Keegan, tried to make it as a footballer when he was young.
But the Essex-born star has found success from other avenues away from football, such as TV and radio.
But coming on for an FA Cup clash against Premier League Leeds even if just for a few minutes would’ve been a big deal for Wright.
He told the BBC: “The day I got released from Tottenham was one of the worst days of my life. I cried my eyes out, I realised I messed up.

“I didn’t want to face my family, I didn’t want to face my friends. I was embarrassed. I had it all, 18, going to clubs and I just thought, ‘It’s done.’
“I’ve been spoiled, I played for Arsenal, West Ham and Tottenham all of my life and never had to suffer when it came to football.
“Captain of the youth team, playing for the reserves with Jamie Redknapp, Stephen Dalmat, Helder Postiga. I had it all.
“I went away one summer for a month, I drank alcohol for the first time, ate what I wanted every day, put on a stone and a half and came back to training pre-season and the goalkeepers were beating me. Never pulled it back.

“Went to League One club Southend and thought, ‘What is this?’ And that is the point where I looked back at “where it all went wrong.
“Instead of going, ‘Right, I’ve dropped the down to League One, I’ve got to get myself back up.’ I’m going to train harder, train longer. Do what I’m doing now at Crawley.
“Staying out after with the fitness coach. On my days, I’m going to work harder to get back.”
Wright is still haunted by how his actions cost him a place at Spurs and has urged youngsters at big club’s academies to never let their work ethic slip.
He added: “If I could tell any young player now, don’t do what I did. The hardest working players make it. And that’s what I didn’t do.”

The former Only Way is Essex Star signed for Crawley last month on a non-contract basis.
Upon joining the Reds, Wright said: “My love for the game has never gone away and the fact that I never played a professional game in the Football League has always niggled away at me. If I don’t do it now, I never will.
“When the manager, John Yems, who I played for 12 years ago here at Crawley asked me if I would like to take it further and sign for the club, of course I didn’t think twice and tonight I’m quite simply over the moon.
“I’ve worked so hard to get fighting fit and I will continue to do so. When/if the time comes for me to make my debut, it will be a day I remember and cherish forever.”

But they have heavyweight backing in the form of WBC champion Fury – a Manchester United fan – who is rooting for a classic cup upset.
He said: “This is a special message to Crawley Town.
“Hi guys, I know you have a big game against Leeds but never underestimate the underdog.

“I have been the underdog so many times in my career and always come out on top. Come on the boys!”
Fury, 32, will also have an eye on his local side Morecambe who travel to Frank Lampard’s Chelsea.
Crawley are in the FA Cup third round for the first time since 2013, when they were knocked out by Reading.
But this time around, as well as support from unbeaten Fury, they have celebrity status with The Only Way is Essex star Mark Wright in the squad.

The former Tottenham trainee had a loan spell at the club in 2006-07 – before his carving out a successful reality and media career.
His return to the club has been filmed by the BBC for a new TV documentary.
And he will also be joined by his brother Josh, after the midfielder signed from Leyton Orient.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright slams Willian and Nicolas Pepe performances after Mikel Arteta gave them a chance in FA Cup

ARSENAL legend Ian Wright blasted Willian and Nicolas Pepe for their FA Cup performances.
Gunners boss Mikel Arteta handed the attacking pair a staring berth against Newcastle in the third-round tie at the Emirates.

Arsenal required extra time to edge past Steve Bruce’s Magpies as goals from Emile Smith Rowe and skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang secured a 2-0 win.
But despite the result, former striker Wright was particularly unhappy with £72million club-record signing Pepe and ex-Chelsea star Willian.
He told BBC Sport: “Very, very poor from [Pepe] today.
“Same with Willian. These are two players we needed a lot from, and we are just not getting it, to be honest.

“In the end, Mikel Arteta had to bring on his best guys because the guys he brought in, just didn’t do it in the first half.
“That was the opportunity for Newcastle to take advantage but they just didn’t have the quality.”
Brazilian star Willian reels in a huge £220,000 a week in North London after he signed a three-year deal in the summer.
But he has repaid the Gunners’ faith with just three assists in 18 games in all competitions and was hauled off for Bukayo Saka after 66 minutes.

Former Lille man Pepe – who Wilfried Zaha claimed Arsenal signed over him – has played just 453 minutes out of Arsenal’s 17 games in the Premier League and was sent off for a headbutt against Leeds.
Arsenal have more forward problems after talented youngster Gabriel Martinelli injured himself in the warm-up before the Newcastle game.
The Brazilian was ‘in tears and a lot of pain’ on the treatment table, according to Mikel Arteta.
Wright previously warned Arsenal are in danger of turning talented Smith Rowe into another Serge Gnabry if Pepe and Willian continue to stand in the way of his progression.

Man Utd sweat on Eric Bailly fitness for Burnley and Liverpool games as Solskjaer confirms neck injury

MANCHESTER UNITED could be without Eric Bailly for the Premier League games against Burnley and Liverpool after the defender picked up a neck injury against Watford.
Scott McTominay’s fifth-minute header saw United see off their Championship opposition to reach the FA Cup fourth round.

But it came at a cost with Bailly having to come off just before half-time after being clattered by his own keeper Dean Henderson.
He is now an injury doubt for Burnley and then the mouthwatering clash against champs Liverpool as United aim to go TOP of the Premier League table.
Speaking after the cup triumph, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: “It’s his neck I think.

“His head is fine. There is no concussion or anything like that.
“But we have got to do scans.”
The player himself also moved to reassure fans as he tweeted: “I am OK. It was just a knock.”
And his centre-half partner for the Old Trafford victory, Axel Tuanzebe, is expecting a quick recovery from the ‘warrior’.

He said: “He’s alright, it’s good to see, he’s a warrior, he gets in the way of things.

“It’s good to see he’s alright and I’m sure he’ll be training this week.”
Bailly, 26, was replaced by club captain Harry Maguire as United scraped past plucky Watford in a disjointed performance.
The Ivory Coast centre-half has been in fine form in recent weeks having bagged the spot next to Maguire ahead of Victor Lindelof.
And former Red Devil Rio Ferdinand is hoping Bailly is back to marshal the defence.

The defender will be assessed int he coming daysCredit: Reuters
He told BT Sport: “He’s been one of the positives in this good run of form they’ve had.
“He’s one of the ones where you’ve sat and thought, ‘actually, he looks like the difference-maker in that back-line especially’.
“This is something that has undone his Man United career time and time again, and he’s got another injury today, hopefully it’s not too serious.”

Man Utd player ratings: Hero McTominay shows he’s captain material but Lingard fails to make most of rare start

MANCHESTER UNITED booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win over Watford.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer picked a much-changed team for the Championship club’s visit.

Scott McTominay excelled with the armband on in Saturday’s winCredit: Getty Images – Getty

But it was Scott McTominay who proved his worth once again with a fifth-minute winner.
Jesse Lingard, Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams were all handed chances to impress from the start.
Here, SunSport’s Oscar Paul delivers his verdict on the individual performances on Saturday night.
    Dean Henderson – 6/10
Raced off his line early on to save from Adam Masina but looked frantic and had a couple of uncomfortable moments in the first-half.

KO’d Eric Bailly, was nearly caught out in no man’s land haring out of his box, and his distribution was mixed. Barely tested by Watford as the Hornets chased an equaliser.
    Brandon Williams – 6
Aggressive and assured in the unfamiliar right-back role, although it was far from a tough night with Watford’s limited threat coming down the opposite flank.
Offered little going forward as the Red Devils struggled to open Watford up.
    Eric Bailly – 6
A couple of loose balls and nervy moments at the back, and flashed a free header wide at the other end.

Replaced by Harry Maguire just before the break after being clattered by Dean Henderson.

Eric Bailly was forced off after suffering a nasty head injuryCredit: Reuters
    Axel Tuanzebe – 7
Solid and composed in a rare start for the 23-year-old.
An important goal-line clearance in the first half kept things level before keeping Watford chances down to a minimum in the second.
    Alex Telles  – 7
The Brazilian’s outswinging corner was met by Scott McTominay to get United up and running, before a carbon copy was nodded wide by Eric Bailly.
Recovered well against the dangerous Ismaila Sarr having got himself in a muddle a couple of times.
    Scott McTominay – 8
A dream night. Captain for the first time, McTominay’s header got United up and running inside five minutes.
But just like legendary skippers Bryan Robson and Roy Keane, the midfielder did the dirty work at the back with some pivotal interventions.

Captain McTominay flung himself at an early corner to notch the winnerCredit: PA:Press Association
Donny van de Beek – 7
A sublime flick to put Juan Mata in on goal was the one moment of pure class in a dull tie.
Dictated the play early on with plenty of the ball and, after three minutes in United’s previous four games, the Dutchman has to be close to a run of starts in the league.
    Daniel James – 6
A lively start but his decision-making and finishing continues to frustrate.
Blew a couple of decent chances before being replaced as United faded as an attacking force.
    Juan Mata – 6
Should have scored on his left peg after being beautifully played in by Donny van de Beek.
On his 400th game in English football, the Spaniard found some promising positions but failed to get the United attack purring.

Juan Mata was one of many players handed a rare start versus WatfordCredit: Getty Images – Getty
    Jesse Lingard – 5
No disaster but did little to suggest he will be anywhere near the league side anytime soon.
Kept things neat and tidy but failed to impose himself in his first start since September.
    Mason Greenwood – 5
A quiet night after being handed a golden chance to make the lone striker’s position his own.
Could not get in the game and barely had a sight of goal before being replaced by Anthony Martial.
    Subs:
    Harry Maguire  (for Bailly, 45) – 6
Would have been hoping for a rare night off but replaced the injured Eric Bailly just before half-time.
Some trademark headers and clearances but was rarely troubled. Went close with a header at the other end late on.

Harry Maguire (right) came off the bench to help see out the winCredit: EPA

    Anthony Martial (for Greenwood, 69) – 6
Brought on for Mason Greenwood to add a spark but did not have a sniff.
    Marcus Rashford (for James, 69) – 6
A great run down the left minutes after coming on but his shot was straight at the keeper.
    Nemanja Matic (for Lingard, 79) – 6
Replaced Jesse Lingard to close the game out and got through the last ten minutes unruffled.

    THAT’S ALL FROM OLD TRAFFORD
Manchester United bounced back from Wednesday’s disappointment to seal their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 victory of Watford.
While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made a host of changes to his starting line-up, he kept faith with one outfield player in the heart of his midfield.
Wearing the captain’s armband for the first time, Scott McTominay rose to the challenge – and rose highest to head in the game’s only goal after just five minutes.
Yet, after an impressive opening quarter, Solskjaer’s stand-ins faded and offered Watford a glimpse of causing a cup shock.
However, in a tie littered with poorly-executed free-kicks, neither side could find the game’s second goal.
So while it’s United that progress, both clubs will be pleased just to get through the tie unscathed, and will now return to the main focus of their seasons.
For Watford, that means success in the Championship and sealing an immediate return to the Premier League.
For United, that means knocking Liverpool off their perch.
    Thanks for reading and goodnight.

    SOLSKJAER SPEAKS
Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer has reacted to his side’s victory this evening, praised the performance of his stand-in captain and issued an update on Eric Bailly’s injury.
“I’m delighted we are through. I told them I didn’t expect to start like a house on fire, I expected them to grow into the game, but the opposite happened. We played some very good stuff, created chances and then we let them back into the game.

The most important thing in the cup is that you go through so everyone will be happy, but the first 15-20 minutes were the highlights of our game.
    Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

“Scott [McTominay] has had a very good season. He’s being more and more dangerous, we know he can be a box-to-box midfielder. He should have scored a few more on set-plays before now because he is a monster of a human being. I am very happy he got the goal.
“[Eric Bailly had] no concussion, he had a sore neck. He couldn’t carry on so we’ll check on him tomorrow.”

    GIANTS PROGRESS
Manchester United have avoided a giant killing this evening – as is their wont.

47 – Manchester United have been successful in 47 of their last 48 FA Cup ties against sides from a lower division, progressing from each of their last 17 since losing against Leeds in January 2010. Bullies. #MUNWAT

    CAPTAIN SCOTT
Scott McTominay has been speaking of his pride at captaining Manchester United, and his relief at getting the job despite a below-par second half.
“We started really well and for the first half hour we were really good. And then we didn’t find it after that. In the second half, we didn’t play anywhere near to our level.
“For the boys coming into the team, it’s difficult. They haven’t played for a long time.

When the manager told me [I was captain], it was a surreal moment. I’ve been at this club since I was five-years-old so it’s a huge honour. I love this football club and it’s been my whole life.
    Scott McTominay

“We have a lot of variations from set-pieces, but I need to start scoring a lot more headers, I’m six foot three.
“It’s a squad game so I’m sure there’ll be changes on Tuesday, and then changes again for Liverpool.”

    GREAT SCOTT
He captained Manchester United for the first time this evening, scored the only goal of the game, and received BT Sport’s Man of the Match award. Scott McTominay continues to blossom in the Red Devils’ midfield.

    FT: MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
It’s victory for the Premier League side as Scott McTominay’s early header saw off Watford of the Championship at Old Trafford. The Manchester United midfielder began the night as his side’s captain, was the best player on the pitch and netted the only goal of the game.

PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!IT’S ALL OVER AT OLD TRAFFORD!

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
90+4. On the subject of rubbish free-kicks, Navarro has just punted Watford’s last chance into Martial’s one-man wall.
Xisco Munoz should fine him a week’s wages.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    90+3. Mata! Curler! Over!

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
90+2. Martial wins a free-kick in the Watford half, and the home side will take their time.
It’s eventually played short with Martial involved again. He combines with Mata with the Spaniard ultimately trying to squirm through the Watford defence to no avail.
However, Andy Madley pulls the play back and awards the home side a free-kick 25 yards from goal.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    90. An aimless ball upfield from Williams travels through to Bachmann. In fairness to the young full-back, if Martial had done more than look at the pass it might not have been described as aimless.
Meanwhile, four added minutes are signalled by the fourth official.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    88. Hungbo has certainly put himself about since his introduction and now he wins a free-kick off Matic, near the touchline and in the final third.
Matic, meanwhile, pleads his innocence to the referee, but he needn’t have worry. Sema’s delivery is straight into the hands of Henderson.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    85. Do the Hornets have a sting in their tail? Their youngsters are trying to to find the goal that will force extra-time, and Hungbo is the latest to have a go.
The substitute cuts inside on the counter before his strike nicks off Maguire’s outstretched leg and goes behind.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    83. In trying to keep pace with Rashford, Nathaniel Chalobah appears to have tweaked his hamstring.
The Watford captain immediately signals to the bench before hobbling to the touchline. The armband is passed to Will Hughes as 19-year-old Daniel Phillips enters the fray.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    81. United fail to put the tie to bed with two quickfire chances.
First, Maguire fails to direct his header on target following a lovely delivery from Alex Telles, and then Rashford slammed a shot straight at Bachmann after a weaving run.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    78. Nemanja Matic is coming on for Jesse Lingard which should tell you a lot about how Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is preparing to tackle these final 12 minutes.
It should also tell you that Lingard’s time at Manchester United won’t last much longer.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    76. Another double switch from the Championship outfit.. Philip Zinckernagel’s Watford debut is over and he’s replaced by young Joseph Hungbo. Also off is William Troost-Ekong with Ben Wilmot taking over in defence.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    74. Watford come again and it requires another thumping header from Maguire to repel an attack, and then excellent tracking from McTominay to deny Zinckernagel the opportunity to cross.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    73. Sema looks to curl a wicked cross towards the back post but overhits his delivery and ends up setting the set-piece behind for a goalkick.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    72. It’s an all Brazilian affair as Alex Telles trips Joao Pedro on the right wing.
It’s a booking for the United left-back, and another dangerous free-kick to Watford.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    70. Two Watford corners in quick succession, taken by substitute Sema, are cleared at the near post by Maguire and then Rashford.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    68. The double change is made with Rashford and Martial on for James and Greenwood.
James has arguably been United’s brightest performer this evening, particularly from an attacking perspective.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    67. Here come the cavalry! Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are stripped and receiving their final instructions.
