Chelsea 3 Luton 1: Abraham hat-trick eases pressure on Frank Lampard but Werner’s horror run continues with penalty miss

TAMMY ABRAHAM scored the hat-trick which finally eased Chelsea’s nerves and put them into the fifth round of the FA Cup.
But yet again Chelsea’s performance raised more questions than it answered for troubled boss Frank Lampard.

For the Premier League side wasted several chances to make this victory against a mid-table Championship side far less worrying than it needed to be.
And erratic Kepa Arrizabalaga’s now trademark blunder followed by a world-class save only fuelled the debate around their enigmatic reserve keeper.
Abraham’s first two goals came in the 11th and 17th minutes and Luton looked set to be blown away by a Chelsea team looking to take out its Premier League frustrations on them in the FA Cup.
Abraham’s opener should have been chalked off as there were two balls on the pitch, which left Luton fuming.

But a mistake by Kepa allowed Luton to pull one back with their first shot of the match after half an hour.
Jordan Clark hit a cross on the half volley and what looked like a routine stop turned nightmare for the Spaniard.
That then triggered a 44-minute spell in which Chelsea at times looked ready to crumble and also squandered a hatful of opportunities to put the game beyond doubt.
Christian Pulisic was the chief culprit for missing a sitter and put another effort over the bar.

And when Luton did threaten it needed Kepa to pull off a spectacular one-handed stop from Harry Cornick in the second half to keep Chelsea ahead and stop this game becoming a genuine nail-biter.
Abraham finally confirmed Chelsea’s place in the last 16 and an away day at Barnsley by turning home a cross from sub Callum Hudson-Odoi.
But to add a final irksome note for Lampard, out-of-form striker Timo Werner had an 85th-minute penalty saved after being tripped on a run through to goal.

Chelsea start delayed in first AND second half as ‘dodgy clock’ in Luton dressing room keeps Lampard’s men waiting

LUTON players kept Chelsea waiting to kick-off their FA Cup tie because of a ‘dodgy clock’ in their dressing room.
The Hatters were late to emerge onto the pitch at the start of the first and second half on Sunday.

And BBC presenter Gabby Logan said during the half-time break that ‘a dodgy clock’ was to blame for the tardiness.
The visitors were forced to get changed in the health club next to Stamford Bridge because of Covid restrictions.
Away sides have been using the facilities over the road during the pandemic to socially distance from the Blues.
And Luton didn’t emerge onto the pitch until a few minutes past the scheduled midday kick-off.

All the while, Chelsea players were made to wait in the tunnel unaware what the delay was in the Stamford Bridge snow.
But the same scenario happened at the start of the second half as well with Luton players late to leave their dressing room.
And BBC presenter Logan, 47, cited the ‘dodgy clock’ as the reason.

When the team eventually made their way through the snow and back onto the pitch, BBC commentators noted it had been 19 and a half minutes after the first period ended.

Groundstaff worked hard to clear the snow at Stamford Bridge that fell on London on Sunday morning.
Officials were forced to ditch the white ball just minutes into the game due to the snow.
Chelsea led 2-1 at half-time with a double from Tammy Abraham before Kepa’s howler gifted Jordan Clark a route back into the contest.
Abraham completed his hat-trick after the break to seal a spot in the last 16.

Chelsea first goal should NOT have stood with two balls on pitch when Abraham netted against Luton leaving fans fuming

CHELSEA were lucky their opening goal against Luton in the FA Cup was allowed to stand as there were TWO balls on the pitch.
Tammy Abraham fired home Timo Werner’s set up to put a smile on under-fire Blues boss Frank Lampard’s face.

How’s that Chelsea goal been allowed ffs. There’s two balls on the pitch
    — BlueWombat🦊 (@KoloSZN) January 24, 2021

But by the laws of the game the goal should have been chalked off.
In the build-up there were two yellow balls on the field.
And that left many football fans fuming on social media that the underdogs had been given a raw deal.
One Leicester fan tweeted: “How’s that Chelsea goal been allowed ffs.”

And a rival Manchester United fan joked that Chelsea needed ‘two balls on the pitch to score’.
Michael Ellis posted that it was ‘interesting’ as to why the goal was allowed to stand.
Newcastle fan Colin Simpson even suggested there was ANOTHER reason as to why the strike should have been chalked off.

He wrote: “Chelsea scored form a foul throw and two balls on the pitch!
“The thrower only had one foot on the floor when he took it quickly!”

So it took two balls on the pitch for Chelsea to score. Mmm interesting let me tul

Why was the Chelsea goal allowed, two balls on the pitch. Interesting!!
    — Michael Ellis (@MickEll57) January 24, 2021

Luton boss Nathan Jones told beIN SPORTS: “The fourth official said it’s not multi-ball but the referee said it was.
“I tried to get clarification from the referee but he was just robotic and quoting the rule book and not making eye contact to a manager who was being courteous towards him.
“And there was a ball on the pitch – two of our players were pointing.
“I’ve been a player for 29 years and been a manager and coach for another eight or nine.
“Whenever there’s a ball on the pitch, the game gets stopped. But apparently the rules have changed.

“The rules change constantly at the minute. I have no idea about handball or the offside rule – that’s the disappointment.”
BBC commentator for the game Karen Carney quipped: “Chelsea only scored because there were two balls on the pitch”.
At half-time the BBC panel of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Danny Murphy were in agreement that Luton were ‘unlucky’ and that if the referee had seen it, it wouldn’t have counted.
Murphy said: “It’s an interference if you’re a player on the pitch watching the ball that’s on the pitch. I think they have every reason to be upset.
“If you’re a centre-half or central midfielder looking at the ball that’s on the pitch thinking, ‘what are they going to do with it?’ while the other ball five or ten yards away is on the pitch being played behind your back players. I don’t think it should have stood.”

Hasselbaink added: “Ziyech can’t do anything about it because he doesn’t expect that ball to come back in But the referee sees it so I don’t think it should have stood.”
The Blues ran out 3-1 winners thanks to Abraham’s hat-trick to book their spot in the fifth round.
That was despite a howler from Kepa Arrizabalaga which gifted Jordan Clark a route back into the game for Luton.

Man City’s FA Cup clash win over Cheltenham paused by five-minute FIREWORK display as referee fears for players’ safety

MANCHESTER CITY’S FA Cup game win over Cheltenham was paused for five minutes due to a FIREWORK display.
Rockets exploded directly over the Jonny-Rocks Stadium in colourful scenes that called a halt to play.

Referee Stuart Attwell was forced to stop the fourth-round tie for fear of debris landing on the pitch.
Players from either side received tactical refreshers as the fireworks took off.
But the display continued for a full five minutes and Cheltenham boss Michael Duff was seen sharing a joke with Attwell about the delay.
Commentators on BBC Sport’s live coverage of the match reported on police officers being sent to deal with the display.

Cheltenham’s stadium is located in a residential area of the Gloucestershire town, with the display taking place right over the Colin Farmer Stand on one side of the ground.
The fireworks interrupted a hugely promising first-half for the League Two side, who entered the break goalless versus the Premier League giants.
The scenes were similar to the third-round tie between West Ham and Stockport.
Fireworks exploded over Edgeley Park, causing play to be halted like it was on Saturday evening.

And fans were left crediting the display with being the liveliest thing to happen in the goalless first-half as City laboured against Cheltenham.
Twitter user Ryan joked: “The fireworks going off has been the most entertaining thing in the entire game so far.”
One City fan commented: “Highlights of the half has been those fireworks.”
While Charlie tweeted: “Fireworks were the most entertaining part of that half.”
But Jordy rued: “Played really well and let down by idiot fans.”

After the drab first 45 there were certainly fireworks on the pitch after the break.
Cheltenham took a shock lead against Pep Guardiola’s side when Alfie May scored on the hour.
City laboured and the Robins looked like they would go on to score one of the biggest upsets in FA Cup history.
But Man City rallied late, scoring three goals in the final ten minutes to break Cheltenham hearts.
Phil Foden, Gabriel Jesus and Ferran Torres were on target to set up a meeting with Swansea City.

Cheltenham 1 Man City 3: Foden and Jesus complete Prem giants’ comeback after May strike teased mega cupset

PHIL FODEN spared Manchester City’s blushes – just as Pep Guardiola was facing a May day emergency.
League Two minnows Cheltenham looked set to claim one of the biggest scalps in FA Cup history when Alfie May gave them a second-half lead.

But England starlet Foden dragged his stuttering side forward and then grabbed an 81st minute leveller for the Premier League title favourites.
Gabriel Jesus completed the turnaround and broke Robins hearts before Ferran Torres added a stoppage-time third.
But what a scare they were given.
City arrived at Jonny-Rocks Stadium as the Premier League’s in-form team – and were 72 places above their opponents in the football pyramid.

Cheltenham were playing in the fourth round for only the third time in their history and this was by far their biggest game.

Yet they caused Pep Guardiola’s much changed side a real headache.
City could have been ahead inside the first minute as Riyad Mahrez played through Gabriel Jesus but keeper Josh Griffiths got a hand on his attempted lob.
Then Benjamin Mendy ran onto a Taylor Harwood Bellis cross and unleashed a fierce shot that was superbly cleared off the line by Robins skipper Ben Tozer.

A low cross from Phil Foden found Torres but Griffiths again got down to save well before Jesus planted another header wide.
Michael Duff’s men had hung in and created a great chance of their own when Finn Azaz played through May but his shot was saved at the near post by Zack Steffen.
Guardiola must have had some words with his team at the break as they had more intent early in the second-half.

Foden slipped a pass through to Jesus who rolled his shot past Griffiths but against the outside of the post.
The Brazilian has scored just one in his last 12 games and it showed.
And it looked a big miss just before the hour when Tozer’s long throw caused havoc in the box and Charlie Raglan’s header on was rattled into the top corner by May.
Aymeric Laporte felt he was pushed in the back in the build up but there was no VAR and the Frenchman was booked for protesting.

City needed a response and they had another big chance when Foden slipped Mahrez through but Griffiths spread himself to deny him.
The clock ticked into the last ten minutes and the upset looked on, but sub Joao Cancelo lofted a ball into the box and Foden sprang the offside trap to volley home.
And with the home side still reeling, a chip forward from Fernandinho found Jesus who had got behind the defence and turned sharply before firing home.
In stoppage time, sub Ilkay Gundogan got away down the right and squared for Torres to tap home.
