Marcus Rashford a doubt for Man Utd’s FA Cup clash with Leicester as Solskjaer warns striker may miss England games

GARETH SOUTHGATE may have to go into England’s World Cup triple header without Marcus Rashford. The Manchester United striker is doubtful for Sunday’s FA Cup meeting with Leicester.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer cast doubt on the striker’s availability for EnglandCredit: AFP
If he does not make the sixth-round tie then boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fears he will have to withdraw him from World Cup qualifiers against San Marino, Albania and Poland.
Rashford was replaced by goal-hero Paul Pogba in Thursday’s Europa League 1-0 win over AC Milan.
The 23-year-old has had a series of injuries and was frequently troubled by a back ailment.
Solskjaer is unsure how serious Rashford’s current problems are.
He said: “I don’t know to be honest. He struggled a little bit in Milan so he’s doubtful for Sunday but we hope he will be OK.
“Of course if he can’t play for us then it is more difficult to go and travel with England because then it is more serious than just a day or two.”

Mason Greenwood might have expected to take over from his club mate for the internationals.
But Three Lions boss Southgate left him out and he will be on England Under-21 duty.
The 19-year-old has been frozen out since he and Manchester City’s Phil Foden were sent home from Iceland in September.
They invited girls back to their Reykjavik hotel room, breaking team rules and Covid protocol.
Greenwood has struggled since. He has managed only four goals this season and has not hit the net for 15 games.
Despite that, Solskjaer believes “100 per cent” he is improving.

Mason’s overall game has improved so much. People are too concerned about stats and look just at assists and goals.Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

He said: “He’s got those scoring instincts and I’m saying to him just make your decision quickly, don’t even think about it, the goals will come.
“His overall game has improved so much. People are too concerned about stats and look just at assists and goals.
“He still has a good chance of making the Euros. He has to play well for us and for England.”

Everton 0 Man City 2: Guardiola’s side made to work for it but Gundogan & De Bruyne strike late to keep quadruple alive

THE dream of a clean sweep  lives on… but they’re going to have to brush up a bit if it is to become a reality. For nearly 84 minutes Manchester City huffed and puffed without every really coming close to blowing the Everton house down.
Ilkay Gundogan netted an 84th-minute header to finally break the deadlockCredit: Getty
The German international has now scored 16 goals in all competitions this seasonCredit: Getty
Yet then centre back Aymeric Laporte made another striding raid from halfway which ended with stand-in keeper Joao Virginia somehow tipping his shot onto the crossbar.
And there – heartbreakingly for the Toffees, happily for City – was Ilkay Gundogan to throw himself and nod a diving header into an empty net.
Not exactly out of jail…near total possession and few hairy moments of their own at the back was proof of that.
But certainly far more of a toil than a trot, and Pep Guardiola knows there is much work to be done if awesome foursome of seeing all the major trophies at the Etihad isn’t going to indeed prove as impossible as he claims.
Forget Kevin De Bruyne’s last minute second. By then Everton had to chuck men forward to try and save it.
Yet for all bar those closing minutes, City were dominant without being dazzling. And on another day, against better opponents, they would have lost this, make no mistake.
All that against a side with a third-choice keeper in goal because of injuries to Jordan Pickford and Robin Olsen, for all young Virginia did impressively well – on the few occasions he had to.
Everton chief Carlo Ancelotti had insisted in his programme notes at least last night were certainly bullish, insisting he had a strategy which made him confident of victory.

Liverpool boast the most-valuable squad in the Premier League

Maybe it was based on the hope City would eventually get so bored a having the ball, of playing almost entirely in the Everton half, that they’d get bored.
It certainly didn’t involve pushing too far upfield, and if the home defence had been any deeper, they’d have ended up watching from the Gwladys Street stand.
Just about the only respite they got was a break after Fernandinho clipped Richarlison, who collapsed as embarrassingly as a Tottenham European campaign.
There is no doubting the Brazilian striker’s talent, but his pain threshold? Let’s just say he wouldn’t make your top 100. A world away from team-mate and fellow countryman Allan.
De Bruyne gets the congrats after his stoppage time strikeCredit: PA
With him snapping and snarling around the midfield like a starving street dog – Ilkay Gundogan felt the effects of that more than anyone – City could never totally relax.
And if there is one accusation to level at Guardiola’s teams, it is that at times they do tend to over-play.
Certainly Virginia would have expected to be busier than merely fielding a couple of long-range sighters, as City pinged it around, but hardly over-worked the stand-in stopper.
Indeed, the closest thing to a breakthrough came when Yerry Mina rose to meet Lucas Digne’s corner, and Alex Zinchenko headed off the line.

Whether it would have sneaked into the far corner is debatable, but it certainly had defensive hearts fluttering. Yerry and the pacemakers, you could say.
It was a warning, too, that possession alone – and City had nearly three quarters of it – really means FA.
Not without an end product. And the clean sweep-seekers were taking their time in finding one.
And the longer Everton hung in there, the longer it stayed all square, well the more City’s frustration grew…while the home side’s belief slowly and steadily did likewise.
It would have been through the roof had Richarlison’s snapshot been a yard to the right when he pounced onto a second ball as Mina caused havoc at a set piece.
Pep Guardiola embraces his opposite number Carlo Ancelotti at the final whilstleCredit: Reuters
But if anything that just tweaked the tiger’s tail. At least, that’s the impression City gave, the way they reacted to the effrontery of a shot on their goal.
The loping Fernandinho made the unlikeliest of charges to the left flank, and when he pulled it back, Raheem Sterling met it with his side-foot.
Admittedly it wasn’t the cleanest of strikes, hitting it into the surface first, yet it still needed a superb save from Virginia. Not so much with fingertips, more fingernails, it was that close.
Guardiola was running out of patience, too, chucking on Riyad Mahrez, their star of recent weeks, and then Kevin De Bruyne to try and crack the solid blue wall.
The message from the bench couldn’t have been clearer…Get.This.Done. And in normal time too, preferably.
Easier said than done, mind. For while Everton were never dazzling, they were dogged, determined and a textbook example of well drilled.
It took a marauding run from Laporte, an exchange with De Bruyne and a shot that Virginia tipped on to the bar – only for Gundogan to throw himself and head in – to finally find a way.
And then, with Everton broken at last, Rodri sent De Bruyne scooting away and he finished emphatically.
At least it ensured the International Day of Happiness ended with a smile for Guardiola…but it will have been a wry one, you can be sure of that.

At the end of the three months you will automatically roll onto the £15 per month subscription unless cancelled.

    What is the team news?
Jordan Pickford won’t be playing for the Toffees as he still has an injury to contend with.
Gylfi Sigurdsson could play in midfield while Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin will likely play up top.
Nathan Ake is back in the team and could play at centre-back to give his team-mates a rest.
Sergio Aguero may also start for City, having featured numerous times from the bench lately.
    HEAD-TO-HEAD
Everton and Manchester City’s first ever encounter took place way back in 1899 in Manchester where the Merseysiders won 2-1 in the First Division.
Since then, the two Premier League sides have faced off a total of 189 times with City winning a mere majority of 74 games, compared to the Toffees’ 68 wins.
But Everton and the Manchester giants have only locked horns 10 times in the FA Cup throughout their long and glittering history.
The Merseysiders have won four times in the competition whereas the Citizens have only managed three victories in the process.
The two sides’ most recent encounter took place in the Premier League last month when City won 3-1 thanks to goals by Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez and Bernardo Silva – Richarlison temporarily equalised for Everton that day

    GOOD EVENING FROM LIVERPOOL
Welcome to our live coverage of the FA Cup quarter-final clash between Everton and Manchester City at Goodison Park.
This marks the first FA Cup meeting between the Merseysiders and City since the 1980-1981 quarter-final tie, which the Citizens won 3-1 in a replay on their way to the final.
The Toffees are going to be missing both of their senior goalkeepers Jordan Pickford and Robin Olsen due to injury and thus youngster Joao Virginia is going to start between the sticks.
Pickford aggravated a rib problem during last week’s loss to Burnley whereas Olsen is still nursing an abdominal muscle injury.
Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti’s injury problems don’t end there as he will also be without key players Fabian Delph (tendon), Abdoulaye Doucoure (foot) and James Rodriguez (calf).
City boss Pep Guardiola, on the other hand, has no injuries or suspensions to deal with after his team advanced to the Champions League quarter-finals.
However, that doesn’t mean Guardiola won’t be making any changes to his starting line-up as he is still targeting a historical quadruple this season.
Raheem Sterling could be among the City manager’s changes as the star winger hasn’t started in any of the Manchester giants’ last three matches

Bournemouth 0 Southampton 3: Redmond rips Cherries apart as Saints march into FA Cup semi-final

NATHAN REDMOND’S killer goal was so good that Glenn Hoddle likened it to Michael Owen’s wonder-strike against Argentina! In fairness, there was a similarity to Owen’s unforgettable solo effort for Hoddle’s England at World Cup ‘98, albeit at a much lower level.

Michael Owen announced himself on the world stage with THIS goal against ArgentinaCredit: Times Newspapers Ltd
Redmond picked up the ball midway into the Bournemouth half and flew past Cherries skipper Steve Cook, who played the Roberto Ayala role in this scenario.
The Southampton forward then unleashed a devastating strike into the far top corner with all the accuracy that Owen showed in Saint Etienne 23 years ago.
Hoddle, on co-comms for BT Sport, marvelled: “What a finish, Michael Owen-ish against Argentina!”
The majestic goal came right on half-time and doubled Saints’ lead to kill off their Championship neighbours.
Jonathan Woodgate’s Cherries had already fallen behind to Moussa Djenepo’s gorgeous opener, set up by Redmond’s brilliance.
Redmond then piled on the misery with his second, firing in a delightfully-controlled rebound after Stuart Armstrong had crashed the post.
The 27-year-old’s man-of-the-match display came just before the international break and served as a reminder that Redmond actually does have an England cap to his name.
That sole appearance for his country came four years ago as a second-half sub for Adam Lallana against Germany.

He did make another of Gareth Southgate’s squad two years later but no further caps came.
And given his largely underwhelming form for a largely struggling Saints side, Redmond could have no complaints.
But this performance showed just how good the Birmingham-born ace can be on his day, even if those days do not come along very often.
They certainly have not in the second-half of Southampton’s league campaign, which has seen Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men go from league-leaders to having mild worries about survival after ten defeats in 12.
The FA Cup has been their saving grace though and now, predominantly thanks to Redmond, they can look forward to a second semi-final appearance in four years.

Saints have actually had a fair few Wembley appearances in the last decade, including the League Cup final defeat to Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Manchester United in 2017.
Although the last time they won a competition came 11 years ago when Alan Pardew’s side – which included Michail Antonio, Rickie Lambert and Lallana – lifted the JPT.
Bournemouth will be bitterly disappointed with their offering here as they made it easy for their Premier League guests.
Woodgate’s side had comfortably beaten play-off rivals Swanea 3-0 in midweek so presumably would have been in confident mood – but that did not last long.
And it could have been far more embarrassing had VAR not intervened.
Southampton showed they are all in it together in an impressive victoryCredit: Reuters
With 11 minutes on the clock, Saints thought they had broken the deadlock when Cherries loanee Cameron Carter-Vicker steered Kyle Walker-Peters’ cross into his own net.
But Stockley Park, who would not have been utilised had this fixture been played in the previous round, adjudged Walker-Peters to have been marginally offside.
Arnaut Danjuma offered Bournemouth’s only real threat and drew a smart stop from Fraser Forster at his near post.
But in the 37th minute, Southampton showed their superior quality with a picture-perfect opener.
Jack Wilshere was poweless to prevent his Bournemouth side being easily defeatedCredit: Reuters
Redmond glided across the pitch and stroked the ball through for Djenepo dispatch coolly into the far corner.
The Mali winger has suffered with form and fitness since arriving from Belgium two summers ago but this was a reminder of his capabilities.
Bournemouth knew the game was up when Redmond’s Owen impression made it 2-0 seconds before the interval.
It was a marvellous goal but Woodgate, a top England centre-back in his day, will have been devastated by his side’s poor defending.
His side allowed Stuart Armstrong to chest down a throw-in and feed Redmond who did the rest with his mazy run and blistering finish.
Che Adams thought he had made it 3-0 early in the second half with a lethal blast, but once again VAR chalked it off for offside against Armstrong in the build-up.
It was harsh on the would-be goal-scorer, who had been celebrating what he believed to be his fourth goal in as many games.

Saints did not have to wait long for their third though and it perhaps best summed up their confidence in this one-sided affair.
Redmond laid back to Armstrong who cracked the post from just outside the area with his weaker left foot just before the hour.
The ball bounced back to Redmond who showed remarkable control to fire it into the far corner.
Ex-Norwich man Redmond was inches away from a hat-trick when he curled the wrong side of the post with 15 minutes to play.
But it did not wipe the smile off his face as he rolled back the years to send Southampton to Wembley for the third time in five seasons.

Jermaine Jenas rules out ‘inconsistent’ Man Utd winning FA Cup but tips in-form Chelsea to go all the way

FORMER Tottenham and England star Jermaine Jenas has tipped Chelsea to go all the way in the FA Cup on the eve of quarter-final weekend.Eight teams will battle it out over the coming days to secure a day out at Wembley in the semis and edge a step closer to glory.

Manchester City, who travel to Everton, are the big favourites to lift the cup in May.
Championship side Bournemouth host out-of-form Southampton while Leicester host Manchester United, with Jenas feeling the Red Devils are ‘too inconsistent’ to go all the way.
And he fancies Thomas Tuchel’s Blues to be one the ones to stop City.
Jenas, who is working with sponsor of BT Sport’s coverage of the Emirates FA Cup heycar, said: “Leicester struggled towards the end of last season and I see that happening a bit again this season.
“Whereas Manchester United are just too inconsistent, week to week.”
Moving on to assess Chelsea, he admitted he has a feeling the West London club could be the ones set to end the season with Wembley joy.
They face the Premier League’s bottom club Sheffield United at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
And with Tuchel still unbeaten since taking charge, Jenas has a feeling it may be their name on the cup.
