FA Cup prize money revealed with winners getting just £3.4m… HALF of what Arsenal bagged for winning in 2020

THIS SEASON’s FA Cup winners will earn £3.4m – barely half what Arsenal bagged for lifting the trophy in 2020.For the third year running, the FA’s prize fund has stayed at a total just under £16m.

The Covid pandemic has put a strain on Wembley’s financesCredit: PA
That aggregate was cut in half in 2020-21 as a result of the pandemic and its effects on Wembley’s finances.
And it means a Prem club going all the way this term will pick up £3.412m for going all the way.
National League North Kidderminster, the lowest-ranked side still in the competition, have already made £75,004 for their run from the second qualifying round.
The other three minnows, National League trio Chesterfield, Boreham Wood and Yeovil, have earned £66,004 while the 16 remaining clubs from Leagues One and Two picked up £56,629 in progressing from the first round proper.
All this weekend’s third-round winners will get £82,000, with prize money going up at each stage until the Wembley showpiece in May is worth £1.8m for the victors and £900,000 for the runners-up.
In addition, competing clubs each take 45 percent of gate revenues from their matches – which could be worth £750,000-plus for Morecambe at Spurs tomorrow.

Swindon’s Jonny Williams sees himself in Jack Grealish as free transfer prepares to face £100m Man City man in FA Cup

ONE was a free transfer and the other cost £100million in the market last summer. But Jonny Williams sees a bit of himself in Jack Grealish ahead of tonight’s FA Cup third-round ‘battle of the dribblers’.

The Swindon midfielder — nicknamed ‘Joniesta’ since his teenage days at Crystal Palace after Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta — loves carrying the ball and drawing fouls from defenders.
Pep Guardiola will be watching the County Ground tie from home after testing positive for Covid.
But the Manchester City boss might notice some traits in Williams that link to his Nou Camp past and his present — with Grealish also famed for his dribbling skills.
Williams, 28, said: “We like to play the game similarly in the sense that we both like to dribble with the ball and make things happen.
“Grealish is a very gifted player, technically outstanding and one of the best at what he does in carrying the ball. You can’t tell Grealish he shouldn’t dribble because everyone can see how good he is when he carries the ball up the pitch.
“Dribbling separates him from the rest and that’s what makes him Grealish. Most people have to foul him to get the ball back off him.”

Both Williams and Grealish, 26, are used to getting a kicking from opposition defences.
In fact, the pint-sized playmaker was even booted by Cristiano Ronaldo during Wales’ Euro 2016 semi-final defeat by Portugal.
Williams has only faced England star Grealish once before, in a Wembley friendly in October 2020.
That night, the then Aston Villa captain drew comparisons with Paul Gascoigne for his creative display.
Williams added: “I remember playing against him but I can’t remember if I kicked him at Wembley or not!
“Dribbling is something I’ve always done since I was a kid.
“I always liked watching Iniesta and Gianfranco Zola when I was growing up.
“Now I like Mateo Kovacic and Marco Verratti but Lionel Messi is the best at carrying the ball.
“He’s another level and an unbelievable player.
“A lot of central midfielders like to pass and dictate but the way Kovacic and Verratti take the ball, their close control, dribbling past players in the centre of the pitch is great to watch.
“I still get caught by tackles. I’d like to be a bit quicker so I don’t get kicked! I remember someone told me when I was in the Championship with Charlton I was the most fouled player in the league.
“I tried to change my game, passing quicker or taking less touches but it’s like trying to teach someone a completely different sport.
“I was advised by people to change because people wanted me to stay fit. I’ve tried to be more streetwise in recent years but it’s hard to change something.”
Williams has the experience of 31 caps and two major tournaments under his belt with Wales.
But he is fully aware of the daunting task ahead for his League Two team after hailing City’s midfield as the ‘most complete’ in Europe.
Williams said: “It’s not just the starters they have, it’s the substitutes in that area, too.
“I love watching Grealish and Phil Foden because of the way they play the game. They’re top players, proper ball-playing midfielders.
“City have the most complete midfield in Europe.
“I’ve been lucky enough to play in some big games in my career and play against some great midfielders like Luka Modric. I’ve savoured the moment and I always look back and think I did OK.
“The FA Cup is a massive deal, especially for clubs like Swindon.
“It’s great to play against the big boys and it doesn’t get much bigger than this.” More

Weston, now 34, came on as a late sub for Millwall player-boss and Chelsea legend Dennis Wise aged 17 years and 119 days against Manchester United in a 3-0 defeat at the Millennium Stadium in 2004.
He told SunSport: “I’d only made my debut in the Championship as a sub two weeks earlier against Bradford.
“I never thought I’d get on against the likes of Paul Scholes, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Nicky Butt.
“I was happy to just be around Millwall players like Paul Ifill, who I watched from the terraces as a kid.
“And I was learning from top-calibre players like Tim Cahill and Dennis Wise.

“It was also good just to be able to stay in an expensive hotel for the first time and the size of the changing room at the stadium and the warm-up area in it blew me away.
“And then there were the suits we had to wear on FA Cup final day. Everyone had theirs fitted but mine was just given to me so it was hanging off me a bit!”
With the game already lost with a minute left plus stoppage time, Weston made history after another Chelsea legend, the late Ray Wilkins, told him he was going on.
I came on, looked round and Paul Scholes was standing next to me for about a second. I looked away and he was gone. It was unbelievable – we’re 90 minutes in and he’s still moving around like that.Curtis Weston
He said: “I was warming up and soaking up the atmosphere when Ray, who was assistant, ushered me over and told me to get ready.
“I was so nervous to be facing world-class stars and it was just a case of trying to get close to some of my idols.
“Scholes was my favourite all-time player. I came on, looked round and he was standing next to me for about a second. I looked away and he was gone.
“It was unbelievable – we’re 90 minutes in and he’s still moving around like that.
“I did manage a sliding tackle on Van Nistelrooy and went in for a 50-50 with Butt.”
At the end, Weston managed to nab the shirt of Mikael Silvestre, widely considered one of the best defenders during Sir Alex Ferguson’s United reign.
That memento – alongside his own shirt and runners-up medal – is framed and at his aunt’s home in Dartford.
Curtis Weston will be facing Chelsea this weekend for National League leaders Chesterfield
Chelsea legends Dennis Wise and Ray Wilkins were mentors to a young Curtis Weston at Millwall
Weston, who signed for Millwall after impressing in a youth trial game against Chelsea, is indebted to Wise and Wilkins for grounding him.
Wise made 332 appearances for the Blues while Wilkins played 179 games as well as enjoying various coaching spells with them – and both were his mentors.
He said: “Ray always had time for me and wanted to improve my game.
“And it wasn’t just teaching youngsters like me but also the older lads. He even helped improve an exceptional talent like Jody Morris at Millwall.
“Everything flowed with Ray. He’d always get involved in keep balls and rondos. Even approaching 50, he’d never give the ball away.
“Wisey would ask him to take a corner in training – and Ray would ask, ‘How do you want it, fella? Right foot? Left foot? Inswinger? Outswinger?’ Whatever, he’d nail it.”
I couldn’t afford to go out with some of Millwall’s top-earners so asked Wisey if I could borrow some money. He took some notes from his wallet and said, ‘Take this and don’t be embarrassed if you need more'”Curtis Davies
Weston revealed how he asked to borrow cash from Wise while on a pre-season tour to Canada with the Lions … so he could get a round of drinks in.
He said: “I was around first-team players like Jody who were earning far larger amounts and got embarrassed because I couldn’t afford to go out with them.
“So I asked Wisey if I could borrow some money and before I finished the sentence he was taking notes from his wallet, saying ‘Just take this and don’t be embarrassed if you need more.’
“It wasn’t a case of me trying to keep up with the others while out but at least I could buy a round of drinks.
“I went to pay it back when we returned home but Dennis said he didn’t want it.
“Wisey led by example. After he finished playing, he’d go on 5k and 10k runs to keep fit. He instilled into me that work ethic.
“The biggest piece of advice he gave me was, ‘Never let anybody out-work you.’ That’s why he had such a great career.”
Weston followed Wise to Swindon and Leeds where he also enjoyed working with another Chelsea old-boy, Gus Poyet.
He said: “I enjoyed both clubs but can safely say Leeds was the best for me because I absolutely loved my time there. Obviously, they’re a huge club who were playing in League One at the time with incredible facilities.
Curtis Weston loved his time at Leeds United under Dennis Wise
“I loved playing with people like Jonny Howson and Tore Andre Flo.
“But Leeds was the best city I lived. It was good for shopping, going out and just the people up there. I’m a Southerner and will happily admit Northerners are friendlier!”
But it was at Gillingham where he tasted his biggest success – winning promotion to League One via the play-offs in 2009.
However, he spent six seasons with Barnet, suffering relegation from the EFL twice and enjoying one promotion.
While there he worked with Dutch legend Edgar Davids, who was the most ruthless manager he worked with.
Jamal Lowe let the ball roll over his foot and Edgar Davids told him to leave the training pitch. It was a genuine mistake but that was the last time I saw him at Barnet.” Curtis Weston
Weston said: “Look how well Jamal Lowe is doing at Bournemouth but, when he was at Barnet, he let the ball roll over his foot when it was passed out to him in training.
“Then it happened a second time. It was a genuine mistake but Edgar told him to get off the pitch. That was the last time I saw him at Barnet.
“Jamal dropped down the leagues, worked on things and now he’s flying.
“There’s two ways of looking at it – Edgar was either harsh or demanding. If the standards were not met, see you later.
“But he’s a generous man. On our way back from an away game once, we stopped at Nando’s and he told us to order whatever we wanted and he’d pick up the tab.”
Weston is in his fourth season at Chesterfield and cannot wait for the Chelsea challenge.
Weston played under Edgar Davids at Barnet and admits it was a rollercoaster ride
Weston would love to have N’Golo Kante’s shirt today as he is the Chelsea player he admires most
Asked whose shirt he wanted, he said: “If he plays, N’Golo Kante. He’s my favourite player because of his work ethic, endeavour and willingness to work hard for the team.
“I love his humbleness on and off the pitch. There’s nothing big-time about him.
“Not long ago, he went to a fan’s birthday party and stayed the whole evening. That’s class.
“There’s no expectation on us at Stamford Bridge and whoever plays for Chelsea, because I’m sure they’ll rotate, it’ll be a privilege to share the same pitch.”  More

Premier League clubs they MUST play FA Cup games this weekend amid Covid surge even if it means putting out youth stars

PREM clubs have been told they MUST play this weekend’s FA Cup ties – even if it means sending out youth teams.League chiefs wrote to all 20 clubs to relay the instruction in a bid to keep the Covid-hit season on track.

Man City boss Pep and several of his players have caught the virus ahead of the weekend’s FA Cup tiesCredit: PA
But City along with any other affected clubs will have to resort to using their youth stars in tournament the FA have saidCredit: Rex
In the letter, top-flight bosses were informed that the usual Prem minimum requirements for 13 senior outfield players plus one fit goalkeeper, were not to apply for the third round weekend.
Instead, clubs were informed they are required to name any registered players, which would include the youth ranks.
Manchester City have already confirmed their tie at Swindon tomorrow would go ahead despite Pep Guardiola, 13 other staff members and seven players having gone into isolation.
That appeared to be a response to the Prem letter, which also confirmed novice youth players involved this weekend would not be considered as senior players when future league postponement requests were considered.
The letter said: “We believe this exception is warranted given the possible consequences of the FA’s position, in respect of a competition that (for our clubs) has not yet begun.
“We also believe it is an approach that helps assist squad availability during a congested January fixture schedule and best protects the balance between maintaining the integrity of the League and ensuring fixtures are fulfilled.”

The FA still has the final decision on postponing Cup ties if major outbreaks also rule youth players out of consideration.
But the determination of the game’s two biggest authorities to press ahead with the FA’s showpiece weekend is a further sign of concerns that the congested season may face further difficulties in the coming weeks.
Burnley will also be without manager Sean Dyche for their FA Cup clash against Huddersfield on the weekend.
Dyche is believed to have been struck with the virus after the Clarets lost to Leeds on Tuesday.
It means his No2 Ian Woan will prepare the Lancashire club for the third-round clash with the Terriers at Turf Moor. More

Sean Dyche to MISS Burnley’s FA Cup clash with Huddersfield after testing positive for Covid in huge blow

BURNLEY boss Sean Dyche will miss Saturday’s FA Cup tie with Huddersfield after testing positive for Covid earlier this week. The Clarets manager is believed to have discovered the news on Tuesday – a couple of days after their defeat at Leeds.

It means his No2 Ian Woan will prepare the Lancashire club for the third-round clash with the Terriers at Turf Moor.
And Dyche will be absent from media duties on Thursday afternoon – the first time he has not done his press call since he took charge in October 2012.
However Burnley hope he will be ready to return to their Gawthorpe HQ in the middle of next week.
That means he will be able to take training ahead of the crucial game with Leicester on Saturday week.
The Clarets are one of the Prem clubs who are yet to request a postponement – even though they had matches against Watford, Aston Villa and Everton called off by their opponents.
However Ben Mee, Maxwel Cornet and Dale Stephens have all had to isolate recently while Nick Pope, Jay Rodriguez, Kevin Long and Josh Brownhill have also missed matches through illness.
Under Dyche, Burnley have traditionally rested key players for the domestic cups, preferring to focus on maintaining their Prem status instead.

They have won just one game all season and face a huge battle to secure a seventh straight season in the top flight next term.
But Dyche isn’t the only Prem manager that’s had to miss a game recently due to a positive Covid test.

Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp also had to sit out of the Reds’ 2-2 draw with Chelsea when he had to self-isolate.

    Have any games being postponed?
As of December 31, none of the FA Cup matched scheduled for next weekend have been called off.
But with a number of Covid-19 outbreaks in clubs around the country, that could all change in the coming days.
Replays have been scrapped at this stage of the competition with the current fixture pile-up, so matches that do go ahead will be decided on the day with extra-time and penalties if necessary. More
