Their Championship opponents huffed and puffed as United were made to work for their win.
Yet Erik ten Hag will be delighted at seeing his men get over the line as Andy Carroll was also sent off for Reading.
But who was United’s best player on the night? And did anyone have a game to forget?
Here, SunSport’s Neil Custis delivers his player ratings…

    DAVID DE GEA – 7
Didn’t have a lot to do but when called up showed his reactions are as sharp as ever.
Produced a brilliant instinctive stop with his legs to deny Junior Hoilett right on half-time.
But questions remain over future with contract running down.

    AARON WAN-BISSAKA – 7
The argument used to be that, yes, he could tackle, but didn’t offer enough further up-field.
Well that is starting to change as he gets more and more involved with United’s attacks.
    VICTOR LINDELOF – 6
Called up for the two Cup games this week and has barely put a foot wrong.
Ten Hag has real strength in depth at centre-back.
    HARRY MAGUIRE – 6
There is always extra pressure on Maguire when he gets a chance now he is not first choice.
But he looked solid last night as he tries to fight his way back into the team for the Premier League.
    TYRELL MALACIA – 5
Almost cost United right on half-time when he dithered dealing with a cross that allowed Junior Hoilett a shot on goal.
Malacia was thankful for De Gea coming to his rescue.

    CASEMIRO – 9
What a signing he has been.
Runs games as he strolls from box to box and proves he has an eye for goal as well with two in this victory over Reading.
    CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN – 6
Subbed off just short of the hour after a fairly quiet game.
Curled an early free kick just wide.
    ANTONY – 7
Got criticised for his performance at Arsenal but has recovered with two good games in four days.
Superb slide-rule through ball for Casemiro’s opener but lost his man for Reading’s goal.
    BRUNO FERNANDES – 6
    Not at his influential best.
Sent a few long-range shots flying over but did provide the assist for Fred’s goal.
    MARCUS RASHFORD – 6
Denied his moment in history by VAR.
He thought his far post header in the first half had made him the first United player to score in ten straight home games but Wout Weghorst was slightly offside in the build-up.

    WOUT WEGHORST – 5
Broke his duck for United at The City Ground in midweek but was quiet on his home debut.
He is not the long-term answer up front for United.
    SUBS:
    Facundo Pellistri (for Fernandes, 68) – 6
It has taken a while for him to get his chance but this was his third appearance as a sub recently to show he is in Ten Hag’s plans now.
    Alejandro Garnacho (Rashford, 68) – 6
Real one for the future. Loves picking the ball up and just charging at opponents.
    Fred (Eriksen, 57) – 8
What an impact he had teeing up Casemiro for his second and got a goal himself with a clever flick of his instep.

    Onto the next, goodnight!
This is who Manchester United have coming up in their next four games.
It is the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final up next, before getting stuck back into Premier League action against Crystal Palace…

That is all for our coverage of this FA Cup fourth round tie, which saw United beat Reading by three goals to one, and sees them into the hat for the next round of games.
Thank you as always for reading, have a great night!
    Match stats
The stats are not always reflective of the tale of a game, but today was not one of those times.
Manchester United dominated Reading tonight, despite not making that domination count until the second half.
The match stats for Manchester United vs Reading in the FA Cup
    Man of the match
There were a number of really impressive performances tonight, particularly from those in red shirts.
Antony, Rashford, Malacia and Casemiro were all brilliant, but it is the latter who picks up the prestigious SunSport man of the match award tonight.
The Brazilian defensive midfielder proved that he was so much more than that tonight, chipping in with two goals.
The first was a dink over the goalkeeper that most strikers would be proud of, before hammering in a shot from distance just a few minutes later to take the game away from Reading.
Not only was his goal scoring vital, but it seems like he never gives the ball away, times his tackles to perfection, and brings a level of gamesmanship and passion that is almost unmatched in the Premier League.
It was a perfect performance from Casemiro in the middle, and that is why he picks up the Man of the match from us tonight.

    A results round up:
With a number of FA Cup fourth round games going on today, and the small matter of Man City against Arsenal in this tournament yesterday, here is a round up of the results so far:

    Manchester City 1-0 Arsenal
    Walsall 0-1 Leicester
    Accrington 1-3 Leeds
    Fulham 1-1 Sunderland
    Ipswich 0-0 Burnley
    Southampton 2-1 Blackpool
    Sheff Wed 1-1 Fleetwood
    Luton 2-2 Grimsby
    Blackburn Rovers 2-2 Birmingham City
    Bristol City 3-0 West Brom
    Preston 0-3 Tottenham

Still to play are the following teams:

    Brighton vs Liverpool
    Stoke vs Stevenage
    Wrexham vs Sheffield United
    Derby vs West Ham

    Into the hat!
“Glory Glory Man United” rings around Old Trafford, and seemingly for good reason…
The Red Devils still have a chance (albeit a slim one) of winning a quadruple this season!
That said you would not bet against them in the FA Cup and the Carabao cup this time around, having one foot in the final of the latter already!
Reading were stubborn in the first half, and could well have taken the lead just before half time, but a second half brilliance from Manchester United’s samba soldiers saw them coast to victory in the end.
A brace from Casemiro saw him double his total number of Manchester United goals within three minutes, before Fred added a third to add insult to injury for Reading.
The Royals did get one back through Mbengue, but a red card for Andy Carroll meant that it was an uphill battle with just ten men…

    FT. Manchester United 3-1 Reading
The referee calls the second half to a close, and it is onto the fifth round of the FA Cup for Manchester United!

There will be four minutes of added time at the end of the second half.
    89. Manchester United 3-1 Reading
Nothing comes from the corner, as we approach the end of the 90 minutes…
    88. Manchester United 3-1 Reading
Garnacho has looked bright since coming on, as he looks to get the beating of Reading’s right back.
It leads to a corner for his team…
    86. Manchester United 3-1 Reading
A chance for Antony inside the box, but he slips at the vital moment.
That could have been two in two in the FA Cup for him…
    84. Manchester United 3-1 Reading
Paul Ince is absolutely going ballistic at Tyrese Fornah, who had a perfect chance to have a shot on De Gea’s goal, but wasted it and looked to set someone else up instead.
If you want to know what he had to say, it looked a little bit like this:
“SHOOT!” followed by a list of expletives I would not dream of typing out on here…
    82. Manchester United 3-1 Reading
Garnacho tests Bouzanis this time, as he opens his body up and looks to bend the ball into the far corner.
The keeper doesn’t struggle too much in stopping that one.
    80. Manchester United 3-1 Reading
United do well to get down the right hand side once more, but Wan-Bissaka’s cross is picked out by Bouzanis.
    78. Manchester United 3-1 Reading
Ince does really well down the right hand side for Reading, with a lovely nutmeg on Mainoo.
Malacia however, brings Ince down, and gets a yellow card for doing so…
    76. Manchester United 3-1 Reading
Three subs for Reading including one between the sticks!
Joe Lumley has been taken off, and replaced by substitute keeper Dean Bouzanis.
Jess Hendrick and Lucas Joao are also being replaced, by Shane Long and Michael Craig.
    74. Manchester United 3-1 Reading
A few more subs for United…
Casemiro is off, as is Wout Weghorst.
They are replaced by 17-year-old Kobbie Mainoo and Anthony Elanga.
    72. Manchester United 3-1 Reading
Off the bench, and into the net!Amadou Mbengue has a free header from a corner after some poor set-piece defending by United, and it finds the back of the net!
    71. Manchester United 3-0 Reading
A change for Reading too, Amadou Mbengue comes on for Junior Hoilett.
    70. Manchester United 3-0 Reading
A number of substitutes following United’s third goal.
Pellistri and Garnacho are on for Rashford and Fernandes.
    68. Manchester United 3-0 Reading
A corner which finds the back of the net!Bruno Fernandes crosses the ball in low towards the front post, which is flicked in by Fred.
    Manchester United are running riot!
    67. Manchester United 2-0 Reading
    Wow.
That dribbling from Marcus Rashford was sensational.
A heel-to-heel flick, followed by a rabona fake on the edge of the box, before finding a cross into the middle which leads to a corner for The Red Devils…
    66. Manchester United 2-0 Reading
And it was certainly worth adding that yellow card for Andy Carroll, as he has now picked up a red card.
That is the end of the night for Reading’s striker who wears the number two shirt.
    64. Manchester United 2-0 Reading
It is worth adding that Andy Carroll picked up a yellow card for persistent fouling a few minutes ago.
He is understandably frustrated with such minimal time with the ball close to him.
    62. Manchester United 2-0 Reading
Malacia has a go from the edge of the box this time, and United are really finding their rhythm.
Mamadou Loum is off for Reading, with Tyrese Fornah coming on for him.

Man Utd 3 Reading 1: Casemiro’s stunning double sends Red Devils through as Andy Carroll sent off for 10-man visitors

OLD TRAFFORD went Brazil nuts and Andy Carroll simply went nuts as Manchester United cruised into the FA Cup last 16.Samba stars Casemiro – with a double – and Fred were the unlikely marksmen with three in ten second-half minutes, to wreck Paul Ince’s return to his old stomping ground.

Andy Carroll was sent off after two rash challengesCredit: PA
And just to make it a right miserable evening for the Royals boss, he saw striker Carroll sent packing after two ludicrous lunges earned two yellow cards.
Twice he slid in like a runaway horse – or donkey – on Tyrell Malacia and then Casemiro, to leave ref Darren England with a simple decision.
A dismissal, incidentally, which came with a comic slice as Carroll initially headed in the wrong direction, clearly not knowing where the tunnel was.
Mind you, given the problems the one-time Liverpool forward has had in locating the goal in recent times, maybe it should have come as no surprise.

And talking of goals, few had Casemiro and Fred down as the potential goal getters in a game which United always dominated yet had to wait nearly 55 minutes to break through.
For all Erik ten Hag had set his stall out by naming not far short of his strongest line up, there was plenty of huffing and puffing before the door finally came down.

If they’d taken a fraction of the chances they created, a place in the fifth round would have been checked by the break as well.
Christian Eriksen curled a free kick inches wide, Bruno Fernandes dinked an effort just over and Wout Weghorst failed to make a proper connection bang in front.
    Most read in FA Cup
Keeper Joe Lumley made an impressive save – an absolutely fabulous one you could say – to beat away a Marcus Rashford free kick, and Baba Rahman blocked Eriksen’s follow-up.
Mind you, when it came to blocks, centre-back Tom McIntyre made so many that he’ll wake up with more bruises than a night in a punishment parlour.
And even when it appeared that the dam had finally cracked, technology ruled otherwise.
Fernandes’ attempted ball into the box came back off McIntyre – again – and sat up for Weghorst to nod back into the danger area.
Rashford arrived at the far post to nod it down and over the line before Lumley dragged it from through his legs and out of his goal.
Yet while United celebrated, Reading survived, as Weghorst was half a blue-line-on-screen offside.
VAR official Dean Whitestone pointed it out and referee England ruled it out.
Considering the last time Stockley Park ruled on a goal at this place was THAT derby strike from Fernandes, maybe it was a case of fortune levelling itself out.
Yet it was fractions at best.
    Enough, though, to save Reading.

Just as David De Gea then saved United when Reading enjoyed the rarest of excursions into United territory.
Rahman’s cross drifted to Malacia at the far post, and after Junior Hoilett nicked it off the napping left back, De Gea made a trademark stop with his feet.
Nonetheless, a warning shot that all that possession, all that territorial advantage and all that dominance meant nothing without a breakthrough.
It arrived ten minutes after the break with a goal very much made in Rio and finished in Manchester.
Antony was the architect with a magnificent pass which split the defence to pick out the perfectly timed run of Casemiro.
Crucially Mamadou Loum hesitated for half a second and that was enough for the Brazilian to pounce and dink a marvellous finish over Lumley.
Cue collective sighs of relief around most of Old Trafford… ones which were doubled three minutes later as the same man struck again to end any lingering doubts.
This time Fernandes grabbed the assist, if a simple two-yard lay-off merited it.
For in truth it was all Casemiro’s own work, curling one into the corner from 25 yards.
Well at least it would have been, had it not taken a slight clip off Tom Holmes’ hair en route to the net… even if it hardly altered the flight path.
Time, then, for Ten Hag to give some of his stars a break.
And when Fred replaced Eriksen, he got in on the Samba celebrations by bagging the third.
Again Reading were caught dozing, this time by Fernandes’ quick low ball into the box, and Fred’s finish was straight from the Neymar textbook with a cute close range flick.
All too much for Carroll, whose frustrations boiled over with those two rash dive-in challenges.
At least it gave him longer to dry the pony tail, eh.
In his absence, substitute Amadou Mbengue arrived to power in a consolation header that at least gave an impressive away support something to cheer.
    As for United fans?

Well it was all pretty routine, really, and they remain the only English club still chasing silverware on four fronts.
A quadruple is, admittedly, stretching things a little… but with the strides they are making under Ten Hag, you’d be surprised if they don’t end up with at least one.

Fans all say the same thing as Andy Carroll gets sent off vs Man Utd for two horror tackles in ‘crazy ten minutes’

FANS were all saying the same thing after Andy Carroll was sent off at Manchester United for two horror tackles in “10 minutes of madness.”The Reading striker started his side’s 3-1 FA Cup fourth round defeat at Old Trafford on Saturday.

But he ended up taking an early bath after losing his head in the second half.
Carroll was given his first booking in the 59th minute for bashing into United’s Tyrell Malacia, with his shoulder making contact with the Dutchman’s face.
But instead of cooling down, the ex-Liverpool and Newcastle star continued to barrel around the field.
And not long after Carroll was given his marching orders for a bruising late challenge on Casemiro.

It prompted fans to flood Twitter as they reacted to the incident, with some reckoning he should have been sent off even earlier for some other wild tackles – including a scissor tackle on Christian Eriksen moments earlier.
One said: “Andy Carroll really wanted to be sent off didn’t he! Crazy 10 minutes of late challenges.”
Another declared: “1) Can’t believe Carroll still playing and 2) can’t believe not a straight red for the scissors on Eriksen. Dreadful – never rated him.”
One joked: “Andy Carroll still doing Andy Carroll things.”

Preston 0 Tottenham 3: Son Heung-min’s second half double & Arnaut Danjuma debut goal leads Spurs to FA Cup fifth round

WHO NEEDS HARRY KANE?Well, in the medium and long-term, Tottenham. That much was painfully obvious for almost 50 minutes of this game.

But on a day when a poorly Kane was rested and denied the chance to become Spurs’ record scorer, it fell to Son Heung-min to keep alive the club’s best chance of finally breaking that trophy drought.
The opening goal, just after the break, was timely both for Son and his team.
The South Korean has had an awful season by his own high standards. He is one half of the most prolific double act in Premier League history but has not been pulling the weight even of a straight man to Kane’s star turn.
Son’s four league goals have come in two matches, and his other two before last night were in a single Champions League fixture. In other words, the net had eluded him in 23 of his 26 appearances.

Dogged, well-organised Preston had restricted him and an uninspired Spurs side mainly to efforts from distance in the first half.
Without Kane to pull everything together like a conductor, the off-key visitors simply weren’t able to create other clear-cut openings.
But Son made the hosts pay dearly for standing off him and curled a wonderful effort past Freddie Woodman from 25 yards to break the deadlock.
His second goal, 20 minutes or so later, was almost as emphatic and killed off the fading prospect of a giantkilling long before new signing Arnaut Danjuma added a late third.

Ah, the magic of the cup.
This tasty-looking tie gave Preston the chance to sample the wholesome sight and sound of Tottenham fans singing about Sol Campbell.
On the day the ex-Spurs defender publicly bemoaned the fact that he was still such a hate figure after moving to Arsenal all those years ago, guess what?
The supporters who once loved him gave him both barrels for the benefit of a teatime family audience. The first chant you can probably file under very aggressive “banter”. The second, that is about celebrating Campbell’s death, is just plain wrong.
For good measure, the visiting fans also used the Y-word that their own club has repeatedly asked them to remove from their match-day vocabulary.
    Lovely stuff.
And if that wasn’t enough to warm your heart, there was always the news that Ched Evans was starting up front for Preston on a night when the story was supposed to be about a different striker.
Kane’s goal at Fulham had put him level with Greaves on 266 goals and he will have fancied his chances of setting a new landmark in Lancashire.
But the England captain, who defied a fever to play at Craven Cottage, had returned to training only on Friday after three days off.
If Kane was bleeding out of his eyes, he would still want to play every minute of every game.
The South Korean has struggled to find the back of the net in recent timesCredit: Getty
But Conte decided it was not worth the risk and put him on the bench.
The Italian had assessed that it WAS worth the risk to make seven changes overall to the side that had started against Fulham.
Preston had begun the New Year pretty well but, as a mid-table Championship side, should not have had enough to cause serious discomfort to a club that will resume its participation in the Champions League on Valentine’s Day.
That wasn’t going to stop a sold-out Deepdale dreaming of an upset under the Saturday night lights.
But the home side were soon on the back foot.
After a half-cleared free kick, Dejan Kulusevski found himself with a shooting opportunity only for Ryan Ledson to make a timely block.
Goalkeeper Freddie Woodman dealt comfortably with a Son shot but for 20 minutes Preston found it hard to build attacks of their own, let alone have a shot.
When their first chance came, it unfortunately fell to centre back Andrew Hughes, whose slightly mishit effort was deflected away.
Spurs, although continuing to enjoy up to 80 per cent possession, struggled to break their opponents down, crossed the ball poorly and lacked cohesion. They were missing the main man to provide a focal point and link play.
In Kane’s ongoing absence, Son forced a save out of Woodman from just outside the box while Kulusevski was off target from similar range before having another effort blocked by Liam Lindsay.

    So far, so average.
But eventually one of those long-range shots was going to pay off, and early in the second half it did.
Preston allowed Son time to adjust his sights and he curled a brilliant left-footed shot right into the corner of Woodman’s net.
The away fans at last had a reason to be cheerful, although that didn’t sustain them for long and they were soon singing again about wanting chairman Daniel Levy to leave the club.
Preston tried to make a game of it and Ben Whiteman sent the volume soaring again with an effort just wide.
At the other end Woodman made a bit of a meal of keeping out a Perisic header.
But he was soon beaten again when Son turned on to a cute flick from the Croatian and fired home.
Conte made three changes immediately. None was to bring on Kane but one of the trio of substitutes, Danjuma, marked his debut with a scuffed finish in the dying minutes.
