Former Man Utd FA Cup winner left unemployed after playing just TEN minutes last season

JUAN MATA is unemployed after playing just ten minutes of football for Vissel Kobe. The former Chelsea and Manchester United playmaker, 35, only joined the Japanese outfit in September.

His solitary appearance came as a late substitute in a 2-0 defeat away at Sanfrecce Hiroshima on September 16.
Vissel Kobe did, though, finish top of the J1 League in 2023 as the club won their first-ever national title.
And despite his limited impact which included five games as an unused sub, Mata did receive a winner’s medal for his efforts.
However, the Spaniard only signed a four-month contract in Japan.

And he confirmed he has left the club to become a free agent again as he considers his future.
Mata said: “I would like to sincerely thank all my team-mates, staff, and supporters with whom I have spent the past few months.
“I am very happy to have been part of the club’s historic moment in winning the league for the first time.
“I will never forget the memories we spent together.

“I hope that you will continue to have the greatest happiness. Muchas gracias.”
Art fanatic Mata may not have made too much of an impact in Kobe’s successful title tilt – but certainly lapped up the celebrations.
He took to Instagram in November to share photos of him getting his hands on the trophy and wrote: “J1 CHAMPIONS šŸ†šŸ”“āšŖļøāš«ļø
“Wasn’t able to win a domestic league in fifteen years and now two in six months. Keep them coming! šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ˜…šŸ™šŸ€”
Mata was referencing the 2022-23 Turkish Super Lig crown he won in his one season at Galatasaray.
He scored three goals in 16 appearances as the Istanbul giants pipped Fenerbahce and Besiktas to their 23rd league title.
Previously, Mata had always come up short in the Premier League for Chelsea and United as well as for Valencia in LaLiga.
However, the popular playmaker – who racked up 135 and 285 appearances for the Blues and Red Devils respectively – did win the FA Cup and Europa League with both of his English clubs.
He also secured the Champions League at Chelsea and the League Cup for United on top of the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 for Spain.

Broadcaster John Bradley spotted his mistake during the first half and later took to X, formerly Twitter, to discuss it.
He wrote: “There was a very funny moment during the first half of Arsenal Liverpool. Think it was when Jarell Quansah was injured.
“Martin Odegaard looks behind the goal and implores the crowd to make some noise and get behind Arsenal…not realising it was Liverpool fans behind the goal.”
Fans were quick to react, with one person writing: “I saw that and thought has he just done that to the Liverpool end. Lol.”

Following his team’s FA Cup exit, Mikel Arteta said: “We didn’t take the chances, I haven’t seen any other team in the first six months that have generated what we have done against them in the last two games and we’re not capitalising – not today, in the last few games – that’s why we are not winning games.
“Performance-wise, merit-wise, there is no question, but to win the game actually the results say something very different.
“When my team plays with that attitude, with that courage, with that desire and do what they’ve done to probably the best team in Europe at the moment in terms of momentum, what can I do? Stay behind them and support them.” More

Carabao Cup confirm major rule change to ā€˜maintain fairness’ in semi-finals as fans want same rule in FA Cup

VAR will not be used in the Carabao Cup semi-finals, it has been confirmed. The technology is not used at any stage of the competition before the semi-finals because it is only installed at Premier League stadiums.

Since VAR became a regular feature in 2019, it has been utilised by the final four teams across two legs.
However, it has been scrapped for the semi-finals this year to “maintain fairness”.
Championship side Middlesbrough do not have VAR installed at theĀ Riverside Stadium, so the EFL have deemed it unfair to use the technology at other games.
Boro face Chelsea at home on Tuesday, while Liverpool host Fulham at Anfield.

Different rules are used in the FA Cup, meaning select games in every round have access to VAR.
Many fans believe this is unfair and that the rules should be the same in both competitions.
Reacting to the change in this year’s Carabao Cup, one person tweeted: “There should never have been VAR for any Carabao or FA Cup games. That is what would maintain fairness.
“If you can’t implement it at all grounds or matches, don’t utilise it at all!”

Another wrote: “Managers, players and fans will be happy with this decision, which is a sad but accurate indictment of VAR.”
A third added: “Fairness would be having it in no rounds at all. Not randomly bringing it in at the semi final stage.”
While a fourth questioned: “Why don’t they do this in the FA Cup then?”
The two semi-final winners will meet in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, February 25. More

I’m a penalty saving expert who has stopped seven of my last nine including two on Saturday – here is my secret

Local lad Dawson saved Ryan Wintle’s spot kick on four minutes and, three minutes, later shut out former Sheffield United striker Callum Robinson’s effort.
Dawson, 28, said: ā€œThe big thing for me is to stay instinctive.
ā€œYou can do research in terms of where you think the penalty takers are going to go and if there is a pattern to it, but I make an instinctive decision each time.
ā€œI was delighted to save the first and when the ref gave the second one, I thought my luck had to run out, but luckily I guessed right again

ā€œThere was still a long way to go in the game, so it was important for me to calm myself down.ā€
Dawson, who has saved seven of his past nine penalties, added: ā€œI am really proud to have that record.
ā€œI keep telling people it’s a skill when they say I am lucky, but I am not sure they really believe me!ā€
Dawson’s heroics only served to galvanise Championship strugglers Wednesday against a Bluebirds side without manager Erol Bulut, who was ill.

Josh Windass, Liam Palmer and Mallik Wilks were all on target forĀ the Owls, while another came courtesy of a Romaine Sawyers own goal.
Windass opened the scoring in the second minute with a rocket from 30 yards out.
Then came the two penalties after Michael Ihiekwe brought down Sawyers and Anthony Musaba did the same to Kian Etete.
But both were stopped by Dawson, then Wednesday scored twice in two minutes as half time approached, with Sawyers getting the last touch on a Ihiekwe’s thumping header.
They made it three after captain Palmer received the ball on the edge of the box and lashed it home past Cardiff goalkeeper Jak Alnwick.

Dawson continued to be in top form as he denied Ollie Tanner and Rubin Colwill.
And Wednesday put the icing on the cake one minute into second half injury time thanks to Wilks, who received the ball, took it beyond Alnwick and placed it into the empty net.
They will watch the fourth-round draw on Monday evening with interest. More

Fans convinced Arsenal STOLE football from Leicester for Liverpool FA Cup clash and say ā€˜can we have our ball back’

BAFFLED football fans are convinced cheeky Arsenal STOLE an FA Cup football from Leicester City. And one disgruntled Foxes supporter jokingly pleaded with the Gunners to return their property.

Fans reckon the Gunners stole this football from Leicester CityCredit: BBC
The Gunners lost 2-0 to Liverpool at the Emirates in the third round of the famous competition.
But during the tie in North London, some eagle-eyed viewers were left utterly bamboozled when Arsenal right-back Ben White took a throw-in.
The cameras zoomed in on the £50million ex-Brighton defender holding the yellow FA Cup Mitre ball above his head.
But one popular Leicester City fan, who goes by @lee78lcfc on Instagram, shared a screenshot of the moment.
    READ MORE ON ARSENAL
That is because the ball appears to have the initials “LCFC” written on it twice in black ink.
That prompted the Leicester supporter to write: “Can we have our ball back please @arsenal?”
Other supporters of Enzo Maresca’a high-flying Championship leaders chipped in with comments and theories behind the mystery ball.

So one suggested Arsenal “nabbed it from The Den.”
Another, meanwhile, thinks it might have something to do with the referee.
John Brooks was the man in the middle for the Arsenal vs Liverpool game and is from Leicestershire so could have got the ball beforehand from connections at the King Power.
A further plausible explanation is to do with Arsenal’s local neighbours.
There are seven registered football clubs in England whose initials are LCFC.
That includes Leicester City, Lincoln City, Lancaster City, Lichfield City, Little Common, Long Crendon and London Colney.
Arsenal’s training ground is in London Colney just off the M25 in Hertfordshire, just 2.5 miles from the Blueboys’ Cotlandswick Park stadium.
So it could be that the Combined Counties League Division One side donated some leftover Mitre FA Cup balls to the Gunners which were deemed surplus to requirements as it appears they did not enter the 2023-24 competition.
    ‘MUST BE TOUGH’
A few more Twitter users chipped in with some more witty comments, though.
One Leicester fan replied: “Things must be tough down your neck of the woods.”
Another viewer quipped: “I think Arsenal may be looking at a points deduction for playing with a stolen ball.”
And a final supporter typed: “Basically Premier League teams are the same as grassroots teams and ‘inherit’ balls from other clubs!!!”
Arsenal, though, could now give the ball on to Leicester City after Mikel Arteta’s side were dumped out by Liverpool.
After wasting a host of good chances, the Gunners were made to pay as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s whipped free-kick was headed into his own net by Jakub Kiwior prompting wild celebrations.
Then deep into injury time, Luis Diaz rifled into the top corner to seal the win.
