Lewis Hamilton hopes F1 drivers will be ‘more united’ in taking knee for BLM movement with strides made at British GP

LEWIS HAMILTON hopes F1 drivers will become “more united” when it comes to taking a knee before F1 races.
There were much-improved scenes at Silverstone, with a video message from all 20 drivers to back the sport’s “end racism” and “we race as one” campaigns.

Lewis Hamilton hopes F1 drivers will be “more united” in taking the knee for the BLM movement
However, the decision to kneel has split the grid, with six drivers continuing to stand while Kevin Magnussen also stood for the first time last Sunday.
And Hamilton has drawn comparisons with the Premier League and says a drivers’ nationality should not prevent them from also taking a knee.
He said: “I’m not going to tell you my opinion on whether everyone needs to or not.
“But if you look at all the other sports – look at basketball, look at football, Spanish teams, Italian teams, teams all over the world – no matter what nationality or mixture, they are all doing it united.

“You’ve got players from Russia, players from Spain. So I think it is a work in progress.
“But when the reason for perhaps not doing it is how you think it would be perceived in your country, all you have to do is look at the other sports, because they are doing it.
“So I do hope that bit by bit we can come more and more together and more united.

The ten greatest F1 drivers of all-time – according to SunSport’s motorsport correspondent Ben Hunt
“I am really proud of all the drivers wearing the end racism t-shirts and I think there is progression.

“I don’t know why Magnussen hadn’t done it, I’ve not spoken to him. But I think we will just try to improve each other’s understanding.
“The most important thing is that the drivers continue to have respect for each other.
“Maybe there needs to be more conversations. I know Formula One hasn’t spoken to any of the drivers, and nobody else has probably spoken to them individually.”
Meanwhile, Formula One MD, Ross Brawn, said he was pleased by the drivers’ pre-race message to support their campaign to help end racism and improve diversity in the sport.

Watch moment Lewis Hamilton’s tyre bursts from INSIDE his Mercedes as he sensationally holds on to beat Max Verstappen

LEWIS HAMILTON kept his cool in remarkable fashion as he drove to British Grand Prix victory on three wheels.
Footage from on-board the world championship leader’s Mercedes shows the moment his front-left tyre burst on the final lap.

He’s had some pretty hair-raising final laps in his career… 🤯Jump onboard as @LewisHamilton uses every ounce of skill to bring his three-wheeled Mercedes home for the win#BritishGP 🇬🇧 #F1

Hamilton’s car is, at first, a picture of tranquility around the empty Silverstone while others fell away in the demanding race.
Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas and McLaren’s Carlos Sainz both experienced late punctures, prompting a message of calm coming over the Brit’s radio.
Engineer Pete ‘Bono’ Bonnington tells Hamilton: “Please don’t go for the fastest lap, we just need to get the car home. Tyre integrity is the predominant thing.”
The driver confirms the message before the news of Bottas’ nightmare, dropping the Finn from second to 11th, is relayed to him.

As Hamilton pulls around Luffield, his front-left bursts and he checks in: “Think something has happened to my left tyre also.”
From then on, the six-time world champ is fully concentrated as he masterfully guides the car home while Bono keeps him updated on Max Verstappen’s pursuit.

That is the most dramatic ending to a race I remember having.
    Lewis Hamilton

Having overtaken Bottas, the Red Bull ace pitted and found himself having to close a gap of over 30 seconds in just half a lap.
Crossing the line with just 5.8 seconds spare, Hamilton didn’t spot the chequered flag and quickly asked to confirm his victory.

A jubilant Bono replies: “That’s it mate, you’ve done it! You’ve done it!”
Such is Hamilton’s confidence in piloting the F1 three-wheeler, he decides against Bono’s calls to stop the car on track and gently rides back to the pits.
The victory bumped the Mercedes man’s lead at the top of the championship up to a healthy 30 points.
He said afterwards: “That is the most dramatic ending to a race I remember having.

“There was the race in Formula Renault where the rear suspension had snapped, I remember driving through the corners with one wheel in the air.
“I still managed to win just, I don’t know how. It was similar today but it was much more extreme.”

Pirelli launch urgent probe after Lewis Hamilton’s tyre explodes on dramatic last F1 lap of British GP

PIRELLI are investigating what caused the punctures that sparked havoc at the end of the British GP.
The Italian tyre-supplier will “analyse everything 360 degrees” to find out why Valtteri Bottas, Carlos Sainz and then race leader Lewis Hamilton all suffered front-left punctures in the final four laps.

    1

Pirelli have launched an urgent probe after Lewis Hamilton’s tyre exploded on dramatic last F1 lap of British GPCredit: AFP
Max Verstappen said his tyre was also close to going pop, with up to 50 cuts detected, believed to be caused by Kimi Raikkonen’s front wing failure.
Pirelli’s F1 boss Mario Isola said: “We will investigate what happened in the last few laps.
“It’s a bit early now to give you any conclusion.
“It could be high wear, because for sure tyres with 38 laps or more on this circuit are quite worn, but I’m not saying that the wear is the cause of the issue.

“It can be debris, because we had the pieces of the front wing of Kimi that were on track, but also some other debris.”

He added: “So that’s why we want to investigate not only the tyres with a failure, but all the tyres used in the last few laps of the race, to understand if we find any other cut or any other possible indication on what happened.
“We don’t want to exclude anything, we want to analyse everything 360 degrees and avoid excluding any possibility because it’s a big mistake when you make these kinds of investigations.
“We have to consider all the possibilities.”

LEWIS HAMILTON was made to work far harder than expected for victory in the British Grand Prix.
The two Mercedes drivers appeared to be cruising to a one-two before Bottas suffered a puncture with two laps left.
And then Hamilton himself had to bring his Mercedes home following a puncture, as he ended up edging out Max Verstappen by just five seconds.
Red Bull may rue what might have been after pitting Verstappen with a lap left to save his tyres when victory may have been in sight.

Lewis Hamilton wins British Grand Prix for SEVENTH time after late drama as tyres give way

LEWIS HAMILTON survived an almighty late scare to win his seventh British Grand Prix in dramatic style.
The Brit’s tyres completely gave way on the final lap at Silverstone, and he just about nursed the car home in a heart-stopping finale.

Bottas got off the line better than Hamilton and threatened to take the lead, but the Brit held off his attempt into turn one.
And that seemed to be as close as anyone came all day to denying Hamilton a remarkable seventh win at Silverstone – two more than Jim Clark and Alain Prost.
But then tyre drama struck both Mercedes drivers in the final few laps.
Bottas looked to be cruising to second place before a puncture just three laps from home ruined his afternoon.

Max Verstappen pounced to take second place while Charles Leclerc was third in his Ferrari.
Bottas dropped all the way to 12th place after his puncture just two laps from home in a nightmare finish.
And Hamilton’s tyres gave way, too, on the final lap, but he just had enough of an advantage to hold off Verstappen and win his third race in a row.

Hamilton said: “Up until the last lap everything was smooth sailing. The tyres felt great – Valtteri was pushing very hard while I was trying some management of the tyre.

“When I heard that his went I kept looking at mine and everything seemed fine. Then just down the straight it deflated. It was a heart in mouth moment and I could see the tyre falling off the rim.
“I was trying to keep the speed up but just praying to try and get it round. I nearly didn’t get it round the last two corners but thank god I did.
“I’ve not experienced anything on the last lap like that – my heart nearly stopped.”

Bottas added: “Really disappointing and very unlucky. Where I got the puncture, I had to go round the whole lap which was not ideal.
“We knew it was going to be a long stint on the hard tyre and I was trying to put pressure on Lewis.
“I started to get more and more vibration and I reported that, but then at the end I had in my mind that there could be an issue so I started to manage a bit, but it happened so suddenly.”

Lewis Hamilton and Co given time to kneel at start of British GP after Hungarian GP farce.. but seven still refuse

LEWIS HAMILTON and Co were able to take the knee before the British GP after the farce in Hungary.
A shambolic showing at the Hungaroring last month saw drivers kneel before the entire group had arrived, while Italian driver Antonio Giovinazzi forgot to wear his ‘END RACISM’ t-shirt.

Seven drivers remain standing as Lewis Hamilton and Co kneel at Silverstone
Plans were put in place to send a clear message at Silverstone.
And they paid off, with drivers given enough time to take a knee in a unified fight against racism.
Seven racers remained standing but all drivers wore an ‘END RACISM’ T-shirt, apart from Hamilton whose top read ‘BLACK LIVES MATTER’.

Lewis Hamilton, who has fought to raise awareness of racism in F1, was joined by fellow Brit Lando Norris.

It is not mandatory to kneel and some F1 stars have cited political reasons for their decision to stay standing.
Hamilton, 35, insists he doesn’t want his rivals to “feel forced” to kneel.
After last month’s Austrian GP, when six drivers stayed standing, he said: “I don’t want it to be a case of people feeling forced. I want people to be excited to be a part of the change.
“I want people to think that while they are fortunate not to have experienced racism, they can try to understand what it feels like and that they don’t want people to feel that way and want to be part of change so in the future our kids can lead a better quality of life.”

Brit Norris, 20, said: “We are united in agreeing with what we support as a community of F1 drivers.
“Whether we do take the knee or we don’t take the knee, that is not the question. I don’t think that needs to be the reason why people judge some of us to be in support of it or not. We all support it.

“Some people want to do different things, but we are all in agreement that we want to take a stand and show support of what we’re trying to do against racism.”
It follows the embarrassment at the Hungary GP when Italian driver Antonio Giovinazzi forgot to wear his ‘END RACISM’ T-shirt.
Hamilton has worn a Black Lives Matter T-shirt and has been highly vocal in wanting to highlight the problems of racism within F1 and wider society.
After his win in the Styrian Grand Prix, he raised his fist aloft on the podium in a Black Power salute.
Hamilton is the only black driver in F1.
Footballers in the Premier League have been taking the knee since the restart following the death of George Floyd in America.
