Anthoine Hubert’s fatal F2 crash left pal Ilott in tears as he recalls emotional moment 12 months on

FORMULA ONE will return to the Spa circuit this week 12 months on from it claiming the life of young racer, Anthoine Hubert.
The Frenchman was killed in the smash at the top of notorious Raidillon hill when he struck a tyre barrier and his Formula 2 car was spat out into the path of Juan Manuel Correa’s car.

The two collided and while Hubert succumbed to his injuries, Correa was left fighting for his life after striking the wreckage at over 150mph.
The sport was plunged into mourning and for British racer, Callum Ilott it was especially tough.
The 21-year-old from Cambridge was teammates with Correa while he was incredibly close to Hubert, as the two had raced as team-mates in 2016 and 2018.
    ‘HARD TO TAKE’
In an emotional conversation with Ilott, who is currently leading the Formula 2 championship, he told SunSport: “To have both your team-mate and your former team-mate involved in an accident like that…

“One passing away and the other being very close to… it was very hard to take.
“The way I made peace with it was analyse the situation and understand it was a one in a trillion accident.
“There are lessons to be learnt. I took away my personal views.
“I changed my outlook and spent some more time with my family, because you never know when things can change.”

Ilott recalls the moments before and after Hubert’s death and says that upon learning of his former team’s death, he was reduced to tears.

I drove back to the pits and you realise ‘s***, what’s happened’. I caught the end of the impact and I couldn’t piece it together.
    Ilott on Spa smash

He added: “I was coming up the hill at Eau Rouge and I could see in the distance there was a big cloud of brown grass and dirt.
“I was the first person to stop in front of the crash and there was so much debris that I could not even tell how many cars were in the accident.
“I could see my team-mate was upside down and because you are in racing mode, you see everything but you don’t understand what happened.
“I drove back to the pits and you realise ‘s***, what’s happened’. I caught the end of the impact and I couldn’t piece it together.
“It was not until 30 minutes after the race I saw a video of the accident and I knew it was not good. It is not easy to walk away after one of those.
“At 6.45pm, we got the official statement and everyone in the paddock was upset.
“I was crying, Anthoine was a team-mate of mine and a close friend.
“I still don’t believe it. Even to this day, even though I have made peace with it, you don’t think it can happen in a race to you.”

Ilott went to visit Correa in hospital soon after the accident and the Ecuadorian-American racer will be invited as a guest of honour this weekend, where there will be tributes for Hubert.
He says he has since used his friend’s passing as a form of motivation to achieve his goal of reaching F1.
He is currently top of the championship driving for the Virtuosi Racing team and upstaging big names, such as Mick Schumacher, the son of Michael, and Giuliano Alesi, whose dad is former F1 driver, Jean.
They are all part of the Ferrari Driver Academy (FDA) but it is Ilott – who does not have the same family racing history or sponsorship clout as the others – is leading the way.
And he hopes that should he win the F2 title this season, he will get his shot in F1 with the Italian team or with their sister outfit, Alfa Romeo.

“Hopefully those things will come. At the end of the day, the F1 team makes the decision and you have to fit in, but it is funny how the tables can turn.
“In some people’s eyes I might not have the motorsport background or leverage that some people think, but look at Lando Norris, George Russell and Alex Albon, they all came in to F1 with talent.
“When you get to this level, every one is good, so you have to stand out and this year, I have tried hard to do that.”

But he has claimed he was taken to hospital because his prostate is inflamed.
Speaking from his hospital bed, the 70-year-old said: “I only have severe prostatitis.
“On Sunday evening I went to San Raffaele in Milan and they hospitalised me.

“While I was here, I took a swab and I still don’t know if I’m positive.
“Maybe it is, with the winds that are in Sardinia.”
Briatore pointed out that he is suffering with “inflammation of the prostate and almost nothing else.”
The former F1 team boss – who is dating a law student 49 YEARS younger than him – concluded: “But I feel good, very good.”

Briatore’s illness follows his Billionaire club being shut down following a spate of positive coronavirus tests seemingly stemming from the Porto Cervo hotspot.
The ex-Benetton chief is not in intensive care, according to reports in Italy – and there has been no official statement, as yet.
However, the flamboyant Italian – who is dating a law student 49 YEARS younger than him – is said to be in “serious” condition.
Briatore – who owned QPR between 2007 and 2010 – saw his Billionaire club closed following an outbreak of the killer virus.

Around 60 members of staff returned positive results for coronavirus in the latest wave of testing.
Briatore was at the club for a recent football match, along with Bologna boss Sinisa Mihajlovic, who has also tested positive for Covid-19.
Nightclubs are considered to be promoting a second wave of coronavirus in Italy.

Formula One confirms final four races of 2020 season with Turkish GP returning for first time in nine years

FORMULA ONE has announced a return to Turkey as it completes a 17-race season in the Middle East.
Istanbul Park will host its first Grand Prix in nine years on November 15 before a double-header in Bahrain and season-closer in Abu Dhabi.

On Tuesday, F1 announced how it will cap off a wholly unique 2020 calendar with four final races.
Entering the schedule is Istanbul Park, located an hour east of Turkey’s bustling capital and based in a secluded location that will help the sport maintain its stringent coronavirus protocols.
After March’s cancelled GP as the pandemic began, Bahrain will stage races on November 29 and December 6, before the season is completed in Abu Dhabi a week later.
It means the year will end in typically gruelling fashion for team staff with three race weekends in a row.

The announcement confirms the 2020 campaign will take place exclusively in Europe and the Middle East, with no excursions to the Americas or Far East.
October races at Germany’s Nurburgring and iconic Italian track Imola will complete the European leg before the trip across the Bosporus.

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry recalls being labelled a ‘black s***’ on live TV as he opens up on racism hell

THIERRY HENRY recalled being labelled a “black s***” on live TV as he opened up on his racism hell.
The Arsenal legend, 43, spoke honestly and bravely about his personal experiences in an emotional video call with Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton and Olympic great Tommie Smith.

    4

Thierry Henry opened up on his racism hell with Lewis Hamilton and Tommie Smith
And the Frenchman – who moved to the USA in 2010 to join the MLS – detailed a case where he was abused during a live broadcast.
Montreal Impact manager Henry said: “At one point, I said people didn’t see my colour any more because I played football, because I was, in brackets, famous.
“When I came to play in the US, my colour came back because no one could recognise me, depending on which state we were in. My colour came back. It was the first time again that I felt like I left my neighbourhood.
“When I arrived in New York, some people could recognise me and some couldn’t.

“When you ask for a cab, he looks and sees you are a certain colour and puts the light on and suddenly he isn’t free any more. You’re left like, ‘Hang on I’m alone here’. It hit me again.
“I have been called a ‘black s***’ live on TV. It is what it is, you’ve heard it before but this was live on TV which made it like, ‘Wow…’.”
Henry posted a powerful response to George Floyd’s murder and racism in 2020 on his Instagram page in June.
And then in the following month, for Montreal’s first game back, he took a knee for the first eight minutes and 46 seconds – the length of time Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on the neck of Floyd.

When I stepped out of my neighbourhood, people started to make me feel that I wasn’t human. The colour of my skin was a problem.
    Thierry Henry

He wore a Black Lives Matter T shirt and raised his fist in a symbol of solidarity with the movement.
But the two-time Premier League winner knows the reality of racism on a personal level, discussing his childhood and then leaving the tough Les Ulis suburb of Paris.
Henry added: “I grew up in a bad neighbourhood, which at the time I thought was the best neighbourhood in the world because I couldn’t compare it to anything.
“Because there was a lot of diversity in my neighbourhood I didn’t realise anywhere was different.
“When I stepped out of my neighbourhood, I started to realise people started to make me feel that I wasn’t human.
“The colour of my skin was a problem, what I wore was a problem. In Europe sometimes if you have a hood on, suddenly that means you are from a bad neighbourhood.
“And if you have the colour to go with it, that’s a double bill.”

    View this post on Instagram

I have been collecting my thoughts for the past few days in order to eloquently describe my feelings on the tragic and unnecessary death of George Floyd. It would have been far too easy to write with emotion, hatred and vitriolic sentiment in the immediate aftermath. Although those feelings are still present, I will give it a try. Why is this still happening in 2020? Why do the same racists applaud any ethnic minority who plays for the team they support but abuse the same minorities on the street? Why are all the methods we are using to eradicate this from our society not working? It’s gone on for too long and we have come too far for this to be tolerated in modern society. I do not advocate violence, looting or destruction of property, as this will not solve any problems and many racially afflicted individuals are victims themselves of this behaviour. Why should the people be punished who have the same struggles, turmoil and racial abuse? The people who have worked their entire lives to feed their families and then have the fruits of the labour destroyed in protests against the issues they are suffering themselves? This is not the answer. However, we do urgently NEED change, we DEMAND change and most importantly, we DESERVE change. Make it happen, NOW. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
A post shared by @ thierryhenry on Jun 2, 2020 at 1:45pm PDT

Like Henry, Hamilton has been at the forefront in raising awareness of racism by leading the protests in F1.
The British star, 35, has taken a knee before each race in the current season – despite criticism and lack of co-operation from some other drivers and the sport’s chiefs.
He also called on broadcasters to do more in supporting the anti-racism campaign by helping with educating the wider public on diversity and race.
In the call, arranged by Puma, Hamilton added: “I’m in a sport which is white dominated and there is very little diversity, for example. And with everything that happened in the States, it really brought up a lot of emotions for me.

“A lot of people think it is only happening in the States. Yes, there is the police brutality in the States but systemic racism is across the world.
“Very much in Europe and England. I experienced that a lot growing up in the UK and then when I started driving race cars.
“This year it has come around and I have got the sport now to acknowledge that it needs to do more.”

“My house in Normandy has been burgled and ransacked, had BRM watches engraved in my name stolen.
“Tag Heuer (watches) jewels, clothes, glasses, racing helmets.

“Please contact me if you have/see or hear any information.”
Meanwhile, Valteri Bottas says he lost three kilos of SWEAT during the Spanish GP – and blamed his new black overalls.

The ten greatest F1 drivers of all-time – according to SunSport’s motorsport correspondent Ben Hunt
His Mercedes team have changed the colour of their car’s livery this season from silver to black to support the team’s anti-racism message.
And in doing so, they also changed the colour of the race suits from white to black but in the searing heat in Spain, Bottas feels they contributed to him over heating.

During the race, he radioed the team saying “these black overalls are f****** hot”.
He later said: “It was really hot in the car. This year, it’s been even hotter in the car.
“Obviously, we had to change the colour of the overalls. And it’s known that black colour takes more of the heat, especially when there’s direct sun.
“I don’t know any number or facts, how much actually black versus white is in terms of temperature difference, but this year, it’s been really hot in the car.

Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari going through ‘awkward divorce’ as F1 woes between pair continue, says Ross Brawn

SEBASTIAN VETTEL and Ferrari are going through an “awkward” divorce according to F1’s Managing Director, Ross Brawn.

Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel is mulling over a potential move to Racing Point from Ferrari
Vettel was again out-spoken about the team’s strategy in Spain but managed to drag the car home for a seventh-place finish.
The four-time world champion, who expressed his shock at not being offered new terms by Ferrari, is now weighing up a move to Racing Point, who will become renamed Aston Martin.
And Brawn says while Ferrari and Vettel go through the motions, their relationship will prove increasingly difficult to manage.

“When a driver has been told he is no longer needed, it’s one of the most difficult times for a team
    Ross Brawn

He said: “It’s tough to watch Sebastian and Ferrari go through the motions right now, with both sides knowing that the end of their relationship is almost upon them.

“They are in that period of a divorce where the papers have been served, but the divorce hasn’t gone through. It’s very awkward.
“The chemistry between a driver and their team is so important. You’re part of a team and you succeed as a team, and fail as a team.
“Managing that dynamic is always a challenge.
